Rick Say, who won two silver medals at this summer's world aquatic championships, wanted to give something back to

swimming. So the Salmon Arm, B.C., native dug into his own pocket to come up with $2,500 he handed out to a pair of

promising swimmers for his Island Swimming club in Victoria.

"The swimmers were thrilled," Randy Bennett, a coach with Island Swimming, said Tuesday. "It was a really heart-felt

moment. Some of the parents were in tears. You hear about athletes but very seldom do you hear about them giving back at

that level. That's a significant level of money for a guy that doesn't make a lot of money."

Sarah Mayzes and Alex McLaren, both 18-year-olds from Victoria, were given cheques for $1,000 each and $500 worth of

trophies. Both Mayzes, who swims the 800 and 1,500-metre freestyle and McLaren, a backstroker, had significantly reduced

their times over the year.

Say got the idea for "the bust-out swim" last winter.

"I think as an athlete you take a lot from the sport," said the 25-year-old who was a member of Canada's 4x100 and 4x200-

metre relays at the world aquatic championships in Montreal. "People are giving to help you succeed. I get the opportunity to

go and compete on a world stage and do something I really love.

"It's not until after you're done you see what you've got or the opportunity you had. I'm sort of appreciating it while I'm still in

it." Say, who represented Canada at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, found some instant gratification in giving out the awards.

"One of the parents of the kids that won it, the mom came up to me and she was crying," he said. "That was really cool. Yes,

it's money but it's more the idea and the feeling behind it. To see how emotional that mom was, it was a great feeling for me.

It was pretty special to see that."

Pierre Lafontaine, Swimming Canada's chief executive officer, was impressed with Say's gesture.

"Rick is one of the swimmers who gives so much back to the community," said Lafontaine. "The more we have athletes on

our national team that can do this, the more our sport will progress."

Say has committed to sponsor the award again next year. Already one family, which runs a local business and has swimmers

in the club, has said they will donate money to keep the award alive in future years. Bennett said there won't be strict

guidelines on the award. Some years no award might be given out. In other years, three swimmers may get cash.

"We're trying to recognize kids that really take a big stride forward," he said. In the past Say has been outspoken in his belief

Canada's athletes need better funding to compete against the world's best. "It's something he feels he didn't get and he feels it

needs to happen," Bennett said. "He has the idea and vision to do it."

Myrtha Pool Commonwealth Games Trials – Island Swimming’s Meet Summary

Island Swimming played host to the 2005 LC Myrtha Pools Commonwealth Games Trials, and the home

team sent their largest contingent to the National event, with a total of 16 swimmers. The women’s team

qualified: Lauren Daniels, Kaitlyn Casper, Caroline Clapham, Tara Hahto, Sarah Mayzes, Stephanie

Pollard, Brittany Reimer and Kathryn Sutton, while the men’s team consisted of: Richard Alexander, Ryan

Cochrane, Morgan Knabe, Alex McLaren, Rick Say, Desmond Strelzow, Jason Strelzow and Thomas

Zochowski.

All participating swimmers and coaches wish to thank all the parents and fellow swimmers who helped

with officiating and sponsorship of the event! Your support did not go unnoticed!! Below is a brief daily

summary of how the Island swimmers did at the meet.

DAY 1 – Thursday, November 24

Six Island swimmers qualified for 7 finals (Top 16) during the night. Caroline Clapham (24), started the

night swimming in the first 2 women’s races, where she placed 15th in the 100 free and 16th in the 50 back.

On the men’s side, Rick Say (26) and Thomas Zochowski (25) of the National Swim Centre and

representing Island Swimming both improved on their morning swims in the 100 free, with Rick racing to a

50.90 (5th) and Thomas clocking a 51.57 (9th).

Following that pair was the backstroke duo of Desmond Strelzow (20) and Alex McLaren (17) in the 50m

race. Desmond found some speed in his backstroke as he swam to a 27.08 and 5th place finish, while Alex,

swimming in his first Nationals ever, went a 27.37 for an 8th place finish. Alex’s swim would later win him

the MALE ROOKIE of the meet honours!! Richard Alexander (18) returned home from University to

compete in the meet and he swam to an impressive 7th place swim in the 200 Fly by going 2:07.34.

Day 2 – Friday, November 25

Day two saw Island Swimming represented five times during the finals and was the night where they

cracked into the medals! First up was Brittany Reimer (17) who has just recently moved to the Island to

swim with the Pacific Swim Centre and represent our club. Brittany swam tough throughout the entire 400

free to win GOLD in a time of 4:14.08, while teammate Sarah Mayzes (18) finished 7th in a time of

4:23.90.

Ryan Cochrane (17) followed up with an inspiring 400 free on the men’s side. During the morning swim

Ryan fared well by being the only swimmer in the top-8 with a lifetime best time! But he had more in his

reserves as he swam a blistering 3:53.51 which was another five second drop from his morning swim to

earn him the SILVER medal and a BC 15-17 year old Provincial record!

The backstroke boys continued their best time streak in the 100 as Desmond Strelzow was 5th in a time of

56.98 and Alex McLaren swam to a 59.16 to finish 14th.

Day 3 – Saturday, November 26

The third day turned out to be the most successful for Island Swimming, as they placed 3 swimmers onto

the Commonwealth Games team and added another 3 medals to their repertoire! First up was the 200 free

where both Brittany Reimer and Rick Say earned a GOLD (2:01.49) and SILVER (1:49.53) respectively,

which qualified them for the 4 x 200 relay. Ryan Cochrane also won the consolation final in another

lifetime best time of 1:53.93.

Desmond Strelzow and Alex McLaren were up once again in the final backstroke race of the meet, the

200. Desmond raced to the GOLD in fine fashion as he became the third Island swimmer to qualify for the

Commonwealth Games by swimming the distance in 2 minutes flat, which was under the selection time

standard by 2 tenths of a second!! Alex once again showed no signs of nervousness being at his first

Nationals as he went another best time of 2:09.10.

Concluding the third night of racing was Richard Alexander once again in the 100 fly, where he swim to a

14th place finishing time of 58.01.

Day 4 – Sunday, November 27

On the final night of the meet, Island Swimming once again put up seven swimmers in the finals. First up

was sprint specialist Caroline Clamham in the 50 free. Having qualified 8th for the final and in the outside

lane, Caroline had a lifetime best swim to move up to 4th place, just narrowly missing out on the bronze.

Her time of 26.59 also broke club Island Swimming Senior Club record, a 20-year mark once held by the

great National team sprinter Pamela Rai. Thomas Zochowski followed with a 10th place swim in the 50,

timing a 23.89.

Richard Alexander raced in the 200 IM, clocking a 2:13.51 to finish 13th, while Morgan Knabe (24) of

the Pacific Sport Centre and representing Island Swimming, swam his one and only event, the 50 Breast

where he placed 4th in a time of 29.24.

The final distance races proved to be the most exciting for the team, as IS won both raced and picked up a

bronze as well! Brittany Reimer lead start to finish to win her third GOLD of the meet in a time of

8:39.17, while teammate Sarah Mayzes captured the BRONZE in a time of 8:58.01. Ryan Cochrane had

the fastest entry time going into the final and he did not disappoint his hometown fans as he lead from start

to finish in record time of 15:25.51! His gold medal performance was a new 15-17 BC Provincial Record

and secured his selection as part of the Junior Squad selected to the Commonwealth Team National Team.

Coach Randy Bennett also received honours by being named to the Coaching Staff, primarily responsible

for the Junior Squad selected to the games. Congratulations to Ryan, Desmond, Brittany, Rick and Randy!

Commonwealth Games Reports from Randy - Head Coach

G'Day All:

Just a quick update as to our travels as we get ready for the Commonwealth Games. As you are aware, we

have 5 athletes who swim for ISA representing Canada at the Commonwealth Games which start in a few

short days. They are Rick Say, Ryan Cochrane, Brittany Reimer, Desmond Strelzow, and Matt Rose.

We left Victoria on the 17th of February and traveled 38 hours to a place called Narooma. This was a very

small town on Australian South Coast, population of about 8,000. We trained in a 6 lane 50 metre pool, and

stayed at a hotel about a 10 minute walk to the pool. The beaches and coast were very beautiful, quite warm

and very quiet. Everywhere we went in town, people recognized us and were very nice. Several families

got together with us for a day at the beach, and we were hosted by one of the parents of a swimmer for

dinner. All in all, we did some very good training, but had a pretty relaxing time as we started our final

prep for the games.

On March 3rd we drove ( by now I was pretty good about which side to travel on, and the difference

between the wipers and the signal lights) to Canberra which was around 3 hours. We met up with the rest of

the team at the AIS, and started our final prep and the process of trying to become a team. As the week

went by, we really started coming together and working well together. All the ISA swimmers started to do

some very good swimming in their test sets, (good sign).

On Sunday March 12 we flew to Melbourne and entered the athlete village. We are in a small sub division

type village with about 250 other Canadians. The village is quite nice, food is very good, and there is pretty

much anything you might need. The clothing we received was very nice, and there was a lot, some 40

different items, plus our Speedo Canada gear, I will need my own airplane to get the stuff home.

On Thursday we start to race, the swimmers have the following races:

Rick Say, 200free, 4 x 200 free relay and alternate for 4 x100 free.

Ryan Cochrane: 400free, 1500 free

Brittany Reimer, 400free, 800free, and 4 x 200 free

Desmond Strelzow, 100 bk,200 bk

Matt Rose, 50 bk, 100 bk, 50 free, 100 free, 4 x 100 free, 4 x 100 med

Our goals are quite simple, improve personal bests, improve rankings and race well through heats. We have

several medal hopes, however, if we keep it simple, we will be very successful.

Please take the time to follow your teammates through the competition, we appreciate all the support we

have received so far. All the best, and I look forward to seeing all of you very soon.

Randy Bennett - Director of Swimming, ISA

Great first day at the pool:

Matt Rose just missed the Canadian Record in the 50 back in the heats by 4 1/00ths of a second, at 25.75,

and then came back and swam into the final for tomorrow. He also was part of the Canadian breaking 4 x

100 free, won a bronze medal and split a personal best in 48.85 seconds, great swim for Matt.

Ryan Cochrane swam his best time in heats, moved up from 10th to 7th and went 3:53.2, very good

morning swim. At night he was a bit slower, maybe needed a bit more warm-up, (coaching error!!) but a

great first day for Ryan in his first ever senior national team.

Rick Say did a time trial to get ready for his 200 tomorrow and dove 49.72 for 100 free, just 3/100th over

his best time, but was very smooth, so look for Rick in the 200 tomorrow.

So Matt in the 50 final tomorrow night, Rick has heats and hopefully final tomorrow night.

I will keep you informed!!!

Talk to you soon, Randy

Day 2:

Matt Rose 6th in the 50 back. Good swim, moved up a spot, still need to keep working on the swim.

Rick Say swam 1:47.44 in the 200 free. This is the best time he has gone in this event since 2004 Olympic

Trials, way to go Rick. The race was great, 4 guys finished within 15/100's of a second, very exciting. Rick

finished 4th, missing the medal by 3/100th of a second, but was very pleased with the swim overall. He will

swim the 4 x 200 free tomorrow, and see if he can win a medal in this event.

Also tomorrow, Matt Rose is in the 100 free, Desmond Strelzow is in the 200BK and Brittany Reimer is in

the 800 free and the 200 free relay.

Keep cheering, the support has been great!!

Randy

Day 3

A tough night at the pool tonight for Canada. We had a few opportunities for medals and just were a little

bit off and went home with 4th's and 5th's. I think this is most around experience, it is a very tough thing to

see yourself ranked 1st or second and not get ahead of yourself and think about winning. Racing well with

good tactics and great efforts are required. The tendency is to get over excited and make mistakes, when

this happens at this level, other swimmer are there to capitalize. Always learning.

Today Brittany swam the 800 free in heats and is ranked 4th for finals tomorrow night. Brittany also swam

the anchor leg of the 4 x 200 free relay and split 1:59, but was out touched by 4/100th of a second for 4th

place. The relay was a Canadian record however.

Desmond swam the 200 back final and finished 5th. He was over his best time by 1.4 second, raced well,

and will be back into a final in a big meet very soon. Look for him at Pan Pacs this summer. Des has the

100 back tomorrow.

Rick swam the anchor leg of the men's 4 x 200 free and again we finished 4th. It was a very tight race, and

Rick split 1:47.6, which was one of the fastest splits from all the teams. Rick is done for the meet now and

will start his prep for the summer season.

Matt Rose swam the 100 free this morning in 50.20 but decided to scratch the semi and get ready for his

100 back tomorrow. Matt still has a very busy program ahead of him.

See you tomorrow.

Randy

Day 4

Island Swimming Brittany Reimer won a bronze medal in the 800 free tonight. In a very tough race Brit

was stroke for stroke with a swimmer from England and held her off to win the bronze. Great job Brittany.

Matt Rose and Desmond Strelzow both swam the 100 back this morning and advanced to the semi finals

tonight. However, neither advanced through to the finals tomorrow night.

Tomorrow we have Ryan Cochrane in the heats of the 1500, Matt Rose in the 50 free and Brittany in the

400 free.

2 more days of swimming to go, lots of very exciting swimming from other Canadians as well as several

other countires in the meet. 11,000 fans every night in a very noisy stadium. It is like being at hockey game

at GM Place.

Lots of fun!!

Talk to you tomorrow. Go Canada Go!!!

Day 5:

Matt Rose swam heats and semis in the 50 free and is going into finals in 4th place tomorrow night. 22.52

is the fastest Matt has been since Olympic year. It will be a great race, Go Matt!!

Brittany swam the 400 free in heats and finals. She finished up in 6 place with a gutsy swim in a very tough

field. Way to go Britt!!

Ryan swam the heats of the 1500 free this morning, there were only 9 swimmers entered, so he just had to

beat one swimmer in his heat to advance to the final. Ryan swam a very easy 15:55 and will go into the

finals in 7th place. A great goal for Ryan is a best time in finals. This event is one of the Aussie's crowd

favorite to watch and cheer. It will be a very exciting race, and a good challenge for Ryan.

Tomorrow we have Matt in the 50 free final and Ryan in the 1500 free final, and then Matt will swim the

backstroke leg of the medley relay.

One day to go, it will be a great night of racing!!! Talk to you tomorrow.

Randy

Day 6

On the last night of swimming in Melbourne, Canada had a our best night. We won our first gold medal, 2

silvers and a bronze. It was a great finish to a very strong meet for a young team.

From the Island perspective, we finished well again:

Ryan swam the 1500 final and swam his life time best time, broke the BC senior record and finished 5th

overall. This was a great meet for Ryan, 2 swims and 2 best times.

Matt swam the 50 free, finished 6th, was a bit slower than the semis. Matt also led out the 4 x 100 medley

relay, which finished 4th overall, just 12/100ths out of a medal. Matt had a lot of swims over the week, and

did a great job.

Overall I think the experience was a very positive one for athletes and coach. I am coming home with a

much better perspective of world swimming and some key things I think our whole program will benefit

from as we go forward. The athletes did a great job representing their country and our program, way to go

all.

Ryan and Brittany actually will continue on the Singapore and Shanghai for the world short course

championships in early April. Good luck to both of you guys.I will see you all at the end of the week.

Randy

ISLAND SWIMMING 2006 PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONS!! (July 10)

Congratulations to all IS swimmers who competed at the recent 2006 T.A.S. BC Long Course

Championships held in Victoria this past weekend! You did our team proud by winning the competition in

fine fashion!

The 11-12 boys comprised of Michael Goulding, Mason Loewen, Brook Powell and Victor Yuan set a

Provinical record in the 4 x 100 Medley Relay swimming to a time of 4:57.33, beating the former record of

4:57.87 by the UBC Dolphins in 2003.

Not to by outdone, the 11-12 girls team of Vanessa Loewen, Jennifer Mann, Rachel Fellner and Savannah

Moneo also set Provincial records in both the 4 x 50 and 4 x 100 Medley Relays. The remarkable feat of

these teams was that the previous two records were set by the Canadian Dolphin Swim Club back in 1982 -

24 years ago! The girls lowered the 4 x 50m race to 2:11.71 (previous - 2:13.30) and they demolished the 4

x 100m race by blazing to a 4:42.74 (previous - 4:48.79). This latter relay distance (400m) was also a

NATIONAL AGE GROUP RECORD - a time 4 seconds faster than the previous mark (4:46.87) set by the

Toronto Swim Club in 2003. FANTASTIC SWIMMING TEAMS!!!

400 M.R. 4:42.74 - S. Moneo, V. Loewen, R. Fellner, J. Mann (also a CANADIAN RECORD!)

200 M.R. 2:11.71 - S. Moneo, V. Loewen, R. Fellner, J. Mann

A Year in Review Victoria Amateur Swimming Club

It has been another banner year for the Victoria Amateur Swimming Club (VASC) and

Island Swimming:

Sarah Mayzes and Ryan Cochrane from Island Swimming represented Canada at

the Victorian Open and Victorian Age Group Championships meets in Australia.

The two National Junior swimmers departed shortly after Christmas and returned

in mid January from the three week tour.

Island Swimming hosted Canada’s top swimmers as they vied for berths on the

Commonwealth Games team at trials November 24-27 in Victoria. While meeting

qualifying times is the prime measuring stick for most spots there was also a

qualification component for junior-aged swimmers (18 and under) to make for

team and gain some valuable international experience if not all the spots are filled.

In addition to the Commonwealth Games, the trials are also the selection meet for

the World Short Course Championships which follow the Games April 5-9 in

Shanghai. A total of 39 spots are available in the able bodied swimming events

and six for the swimmers with a disability

could put a strong race together." "I was hurting at 500 to 600 metres, but hearing

everyone in the crowd cheering like that got me through it," said Cochrane, a finalist

Bagshaw’s efforts gave him the sixth-best point total in the meet among male swimmers at the meet and

helped Team B.C. 2006 finish third out of five teams. Southern California won the meet, followed by the

The world doesn't wait. It just gets faster.

At the last FINA world aquatics championships, in 2005 at Montreal, veteran Victoria swimmer Rick Say won silver with the Canadian team in the men's 4x100 freestyle relay. Yesterday in Melbourne at the 2007 FINA worlds, Say's best and that of his mates, netted seventh place in the final at Rod Laver Arena.

"The world has gotten a lot faster from the last world championships in Montreal,'' said Say, in a media release. "We went out there trying to defend our silver. But the Italians, who weren't even in the final two years ago, won a medal [bronze]. So the field is deeper.''

Also on the Canadian 4x100 freestyle team, which went 3:16.91 in the final, was Matt Rose of Victoria.

"We all showed we're ready to swim really fast. We realize what we need to do in the next year to get ready for the [2008 Beijing Summer] Olympics'' said Say.

Claremont-grad Ryan Cochrane knocked two seconds off his personal best time in placing 19th in the men's 400 freestyle.

Victoria's Ryan Cochrane breaks Canadian record in men's 800 freestyle at worlds

MELBOURNE, Australia – Ryan Cochrane of Victoria beat world record holder Grant Hackett of Australia in his men’s 800 freestyle heat on Tuesday clocking a Canadian record to qualify fourth for the final in swimming action at the world aquatic championships.

"It felt really good," said Cochrane. "It's my best time by seven seconds. I am happy to get second in the heat and I am excited about the final. There are always things to improve on. I will have to work on my starts and turns. Overall it was the best swim I could have done."

It was a big day for the Americans with world record performances and gold medals for Michael Phelps in the men’s 200 freestyle, Natalie Coughlin in the women’s 100 backstroke and Aaron Peirsol in the men’s 100 backstroke. Federica Pellegrini of Italy lowered the world mark in her 200 freestyle semifinal heat.

In the men’s 800 freestyle prelims, the 18-year-old Cochrane, swam out of lane two in the sixth and last heat of the morning. It turned out to be a very exciting race, with Oussama Mellouli of Tunisia winning the heat in 7:51.48, Cochrane second in 7:51.55 and Hackett third in 7:51.86.

Those were the third to fifth fastest times of the prelims. Cochrane smashed the previous national mark of 7:55.88 set by Andrew Hurd of Toronto set at last year’s Pan Pacific Championships.

"He was a bit faster than expected," said Cochrane’s coach Randy Bennett. "And the reason is because there were three guys in previous heats that went 7:50 and 7:52. Ryan could see the race shaping up in the pool, he was able to see the clock and see where he stood. At the 500-metre mark he knew he had to pick it up. If you look at his history he always closes very well and once he turned at 600 in 5:56 I knew he would be fine. His last 100 was the best in the field."

Bennett said finishing ahead of the legendary Hackett is a big confidence boost for Cochrane. Cochrane pulled ahead of Hackett at the halfway point of the race for good.

"Having Hackett in the middle of the pool was a huge plus and Ryan was going stroke for stroke with him," said Bennett. "His tactic was not to get in to over his head early in the race and make sure he was within striking distance. Ryan understands the event really well. He’s a very mature racer."

The final is on Wednesday.

"It's my best time by seven seconds. I am happy to get second in the heat and I am excited about the final", said Ryan Cochrane. The swimmer from Victoria qualified fourth for the final of the 800 m freestyle at the world aquatic championships, Tuesday, with his time of 7:51.55, a new Canadian record, which was better than world record holder Grant Hackett's time.

Victoria's Ryan Cochrane lowers meet record at Mel Zajac Jr International / Bell Swimming Grand Prix

VANCOUVER – Ryan Cochrane of Victoria

recently returned from the land down under and

finished on top in the men’s 800-metre freestyle

in meet record time on Friday to open the 44th

Mel Zajac Jr International / Bell Swimming

Grand Prix.

Cochrane, who broke the Canadian record en

route to an eighth place finish at the worlds in

March, took the gold in eight minutes and

00.090 seconds. That smashed the previous

meet mark of 8:10.15 set by Andrew Hurd of

Toronto last year. C.J. Nuess of the U.S., was

second in 8:20.59 and Jarrod Ballem of Calgary

third in 8:21.71.

"That was my best time since the worlds," said

Cochrane, who remained in Australia for six

weeks after the worlds to work with a training

group. "I approached the race differently than

usual by starting out much faster. I think by

doing that I underestimated how hard the race would be, but I’m really happy with it."

Other winners Friday in men’s competition included Matt Rose of Victoria in the 50

butterfly.

Competition continues through to Sunday.

"I approached the race differently than usual by starting out much faster", said Ryan Cochrane of Victoria, who won the men's 800-metre freestyle at the 44th Mel Zajac Jr International / Bell Swimming Grand Prix by breaking the meet record with a time of 8:00.090. "I think by doing that I underestimated how hard the race would be, but I’m really happy with it."

Ryan Cochrane breaks Canadian record at Mel Zajac Jr International / Bell Swimming Grand Prix

VANCOUVER – Ryan Cochrane of Victoria broke the Canadian record Sunday in the men’s 1,500-metre freestyle to conclude the Mel Zajac Jr International / Bell Swimming Grand Prix.

Cochrane clocked 15 minutes and 08.25 seconds to eclipse the previous national mark of 15:09.44 set by Andrew Hurd of Toronto last year. Sandy Lockhart of Vancouver was second and C.J. Nuess of the U.S., third.

"It was pretty unexpected," said Cochrane, 18. "It was the end of the meet, I wasn’t happy with my performances so far and I didn’t have a good warm-up. My strategy tonight was to hold back a bit at the start. At the 1,000 I saw that I needed to pick it up. Once I was on pace for the record I knew I could make it. I could see the splits and hear the cheering."

"It was pretty unexpected. It was the end of the meet, I wasn’t happy with my performances so far and I didn’t have a good warm-up", confessed Ryan Cochrane, Sunday, after he broke the Canadian record in the men's 1,500-metre freestyle with a time of 15:08.25 at the Mel Zajac Jr International / Bell Swimming Grand Prix.

Flyin' Ryan Cochrane finished off the Mel Zajac Jr. International swim meet with a

helluva kick Sunday. In the meet's final individual event, the 18-year-old Island

Swimming club speedball set a Canadian record in the men's 1500-metre freestyle,

winning in 15 minutes, 08.25 seconds, breaking the 15:09.44 Oakville, Ont.'s Andrew

Hurd swam at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia, in March 2006.

"It's great," said Cochrane. "I just missed [the record] at [the 2007 world championships

last March in Melbourne] and this was really unexpected, which makes it 10 times better.

This wasn't really in the plans. Two weeks ago, I swam a 15:11. This record was kind of

a long-term thing."

The crowd got into it at the half-way mark when Cochrane was four seconds below

record pace. The din pulled him along, which was a good thing because he had no one in

the pool to do that work.

"For sure, that helped," said Cochrane, who also won the 800-m freestyle on Friday and

the 400-m free on Saturday. "It started to hurt at about 400 metres, so it was great to hear

everyone."

Cochrane broke swimming records over the weekend with more regularity than global-

warming scares and B.C. lottery scandals. The rawboned Claremont-grad eclipsed the

Canadian standard in the men's 1,500-metre freestyle yesterday at the Zajac International

Grand Prix meet in Vancouver after breaking the 800-metre freestyle meet record on

Friday. The rapidly rising 18-year-old added the 400-freestyle title for good measure,

with Olympic veteran and fellow-Victorian Rick Say second.

"It was pretty unexpected . . . it was the end of the meet and I didn't have a good warm-

up," said Cochrane, in a release, after clocking 15:08.25 to best Andrew Hurd's previous

Canadian 1,500-freestyle record of 15:09.44 set last year.

Everybody should have such bad warm-ups.

"Once I was on pace for the record, I knew I could make it. I could see the splits and hear

the cheering."

Where do you go when you want to learn from the best in swimming? Oz, of course, and

that's where Cochrane has been for two months training with Grant Hackett's coach Denis

Cotterell. Those sessions seem to have worked

Increase in numbers over past five years fuels boost in success rate

Saanich Commonwealth Place has hosted some high-calibre swimming events, from the Pan Pacific

Championships to the Canadian Pan-Am Games Trials to the Commonwealth Games in 1994.

Fourteen years or so after it was built, the SCP pool has become a hotbed for talented local athletes. In the

case of Island Swimming and the University of Victoria-Pacific Coast Swimming, the two largest local

organizations training young swimmers, the picture is particularly rosy.

Between the two rival groups they train side on opposite sides of the pool at SCP an all-time high of 94

swimmers, 52 with IS and 42 for UVic-PCS, qualified for the 2007 long course provincial championships,

set for July 5-8 in Kamloops. A healthy percentage of those swimmers have already qualified for the Age

Group Nationals two weeks later in Montreal, while others will be out to make nationals time standards.

We have a long-term development kind of philosophy, said Randy Bennett, director of swimming for

Island Swimming and head coach for the Commonwealth-based Victoria Amateur Swim Club.

This is my fifth year here and I feel now we have a pretty good 14-under development program, he said,

noting that many of those swimmers started with the club at age 9 or 10. You can start seeing the results

paying off. A few of these kids have really started to show their mettle. The system is starting to work and

it should stand the test of time. We still have the strength in 10-11-12 (year-olds) as we had several years

ago.

The region s largest swim organization, Island Swimming encompasses VASC, the Victoria Tyee Swim

Club and the Juan de Fuca Cohos for provincial meets and above. It lists past and future Olympians Rick

Say, Ryan Cochrane and Brittany Reimer among its membership, as well as a stable of rising stars that

includes Richard Alexander, Alex McLaren, Vanessa Loewen and Stephanie Pollard.

At provincials, the 18-time champion UBC Dolphins will be the team to beat, but Bennett said his team is

primed to knock the Dolphins off.

We only lost (the short course provincials team title in March) by a couple hundred points. We re going

there to try and get that title back, he said.

Regardless of what happens, the ongoing level of competition they face is helping push local swimmers to

new heights at the recent Vancouver Island regional championships, IS athletes shattered more than a

dozen records.

Coaches Recap: We have just returned from Montreal at the National age group championships. The team

performance was very good. Island swimmers won 11 medals and finished 11th out of 125 teams!! I would

like to congratulate everyone who attended the meet and performed a personal best time. There were over

1400 swimmers at the meet. It rained heavily for 2 days and then the sun shone hot for the last 2 days. It

was an adventure for sure.A big thanks go out to the chaperones Andrea Kent and Byron Powell for doing a

fantastic job for our swimmers.

AGE GROUP NATIONALS – MONTREAL – PARC JEAND DRAPEAU JULY 18-21, 2007

DAY 1

Swimmers woke up Thursday morning to gray sky and rain Day 1 of the Ag e Group Nationals at Parc Jean Drapeau in

Montreal. With 1400 plus swimmers competing out of 16 lanes in the prelims the meet was already challenging

without the steady downpour, but the morning went off without a hitch. The rain slowed for warm up at nigh t and stopped by about 10 minutes into the first night of finals.

BC swimmers were a solid presence in the 10 lane finals and on the podium Day 1. Sixty -four BC swimmers advanced to finals winning four Gold, nine Silver and seven Bronze medals.

Our best medal event was the 50 Back where BC won six medals. Our largest final presence was the 200 IM where seventeen BC swimmers advanced. We were weakest in the mile where BC picked up just one Gold medal count along

with two Silver and two Bronze medals and only fourteen swimmers made the Top 10. IS had the highest number of

Top 10 finishes with one Gold, one Silver and seven Top 10 finishes.

Day One Highlights:

Gold: Vanessa Loewen (50Bk)

Silver: Jeremy Bagshaw (1500Fr)

Finalists: Brook Powell (7th 50Fr, 4th 1500Fr), Naomi Ellis (5th 200IM), Vanessa Loewen (8th 200IM),

AGE GROUP NATIONALS – MONTREAL – PARC JEAN DRAPEAU JULY 18-21, 2007

Day 2

The soggy weather got worse today, breaking a rain accumulation record of over 100 mm, but that didn’t put a damper

on the competition. Swimmers, coaches and officials all hunkered down, sticking to their roles and got the job done.

Finals weren’t only rainy but pretty cold.

Maybe our BC swimmers had a rain advantage because our swimmers picked up the pace today with 71 swims and seven relays in scoring position. BC swimmers claimed 24 medals tonight winning five Gold, eleven Silver and eight

Bronze. We were best in Fly winning three Gold from 25 swims in the Top 10. BC had three or more finalists in six of

the ten age groups.

BC swimmers also won seven medals in the 100 Back with only one win, but we managed six more medals out of only

fourteen finalists. We were weak overall in the 50 Breast winning only two Bronze out of twelve scoring swims. The 400 Free was solid with six medals in total, one win and five silver out of the eighteen final swims.

IS were had three winning individual medals while claiming two Silver and a Bronze.Everyon e is looking forward to the clear skies tomorrow that the weatherman has promised.

Day Two Highlights:

Silver: Hilary Wille (200Fly), Naomi Ellis (100Bk)

Bronze: Vanessa Loewen (100Bk)

Finalists: Jeremy Bagshaw (10th 200Fly, 6th 400Fr), Christl Bradley (10th 200Fly), Savannah Moneo (4th

AGE GROUP NATIONALS – MONTREAL – PARC JEAN DRAPEAU JULY 18-21, 2007.

Day 3

The sun came out this morning and it was a welcome sight to everyone. It's worth mentioning again that the meet committee, volunteers and officials did a great job through the first two days of steady downpour.

Team BC had slightly fewer Top 10 swims this evening but the medal count was only one less and the BC Gold Medal count

was up tonight, with a total of nine. BC swimmers also had 62 individual swims and six relays in the finals tonight, coming

away with nine gold, five silver, and eight bronze.

We had sixteen finalists in the 200 Free, the 100 Breast and the 200 Back, with the highest number of medals coming in the

200 Backstroke (two gold, two silver, and three bronze); Vanessa Loewen, 13, (IS) was particularly impressive.

IS won the most medals this evening with one Gold, one Silver and three Bronze. They also had another three final swims

and two relays make the top 10.

With the weather co-operating it was definitely the best overall racing we've seen at the Age Group Nationals so far.

Tomorrow night is looking like it will be a great finish. The final two events to watch for will be the traditional 400 Free

Inter-provincial Relays. Go BC!

Day Three Highlights:

Gold: Vanessa Loewen (200Bk)

Silver: Jennifer Mann (100Br)

Bronze: Brook Powell (200Fr), Naomi Ellis (200Bk)

AGE GROUP NATIONALS – MONTREAL – PARC JEAN DRAPEAU JULY 18-21, 2007.| Day 4

It was another beautiful day in Montreal today for the last session of the 2007 Age Group National Championships. BC swimmers had more swimmers in the top 10 than any other sessi on, with 88 swims in the top 10. We ended up

with a total of 24 medals tonight: eight Gold, nine Silver and seven Bronze.

We had the most top 10 swims in the 800 Free, closely followed by the 400 IM with 19, where we won the most

medals (8 in total: two Gold, three Silver and three Bronze). Our worst medal showing event was the 100 Free where

we won just two Gold out of seventeen finalists. Our weakest event tonight was the 50 Fly where we had only thirteen swimmers in the finals. We were solid in the 200 Breast winning a total of seven medals: two Gold, two Silver and

three Bronze.

IS won two medals. IS had 10 Finalists to lead BC into the final session.

same island as the competition pools used for the rest of the meet.

Swimmers receive pool of school cash Saanich News October 24, 2007 Ryan Cochrane first recipient of scholarship Doctors are entrusted with saving lives. Now, one in Victoria is helping to build them. Dr. Michael Perchinsky has committed to donating $10,000 a year for the next 10 years to help elite swimmers achieve their dreams. A cardiac surgeon and former competitive swimmer, Perchinsky is giving $5,000 a year for a high-performance swimmer pursuing post-secondary education. Another $5,000 will be set aside for future scholarships. “It’s a really surprising gesture,” said Andrea Kent, president of Victoria Amateur Swim Club. “We’ve never had someone come forward with $100,000 before. I think he got a lot out of the sport and wants to give something back.” The inaugural winner is Ryan Cochrane, who’s already set Canadian records this year in the 800 metre and 1,500m freestyle. The first-year University of Victoria student also became the first Canadian to break the 15-minute mark in the 1,500, clocking in at 14:59.02 at a meet in Paris. “With athletes, it’s a huge expense with traveling and training,” added Kent, who estimated that Cochrane spends more than 20 hours a week in the pool, plus dryland training as well. That’s typical, she said, of someone competing in the upper echelons of the sport. “They put in endless hours and they don’t get a whole lot of (financial) support. There really isn’t a lot for athletes in Canada and they don’t have time for part-time jobs. This is the second major bursary this year for Cochrane, who continues to train with Saanich Commonwealth Place-based Island Swimming. Along with fellow IS swimmer Shawnee Landolt, he captured the Rick Say “Bust Out Swim” award worth $1,000. Kent said these scholarships go a long way in helping athletes who aren’t in a position to earn a lot of money. “They’re so dedicated and they don’t get the funding. This is pretty big.”

Ryan Cochrane smashes Canadian record at Speedo Western Championships February, 18, 2008

VICTORIA – Ryan Cochrane of Victoria smashed the

Canadian short course record in the men’s 1,500-metre freestyle on Sunday night at the Speedo Western

Championships swimming competition.

Cochrane, 19, clocked 14:35.73, the fifth fastest time in the world this year, to eclipse the previous mark of 14:50.04 set by Kurtis MacGillivary of Waterloo, Ont., in 2003. Cochrane’s

coach Randy Bennett wasn’t totally surprised to see his star pupil lower the record. ‘’It was an absolutely fantastic swim but truly this is the level he is at right now,’’ said Bennett. ‘’ I was expecting he would go around 14:43 on Sunday. I knew he was as good as he ever has been and he has the capacity to swim pretty fast while he is in hard training.’’

Bennett said Cochrane’s swim Sunday was relentless. ‘’He was just on it and had the intention of breaking the record,’’ said Bennett. Cochrane is a finalist for junior athlete of the year at next month’s Canadian Sport Awards. He is already a Commonwealth Games and world championship finalist. Last summer he was the first Canadian to clock a sub 15 minute time in the 1,500 in the long course pool, joining

an exclusive group of only 21 swimmers to have broken the barrier.

It was not very long ago at all when Canada didn't have more than a single swimmer just barely under 15 minutes for the metric mile short course; now Cochrane has the National record of 14:59 long course, as well as this 1500m short course time, which puts him solidly amidst the favourites in Beijing. Island Swimming Well Represented 12 swimmers at the 2008 BC Winter Game

Island Swimming had 12 swimmers selected to represent Vancouver Island (Zone 6) at the 2008 BC Winter Games in Kimberly/Cranbrook from February 21-23, 2008. Coach Sarah Paulson was also selected as one of the two coaches on this trip. Vancouver Island finished the games in 2nd place. Congratulations to the following swimmers on their performances: Renee Barone, Liam Cochrane, Hayley Dennett, Rachel Fellner, Connor Foreman, Truan Forsyth, Patrick Graham, Rebecca Langlois, Ken Naito, Kristina Phillips, Eryn Sylvester, and Victor Yuan.

The past two years Ken Naito swam for the Canmore swim team under Head Coach Rick Whitson. There he became an Age Group National qualifier. Now he is a member of the VASC/IS team and coached by Neil Harvey.

While Ken's best event is the 1500m Fr he didn't swim it here at the Games as he is resting up for the Provincial Champs next weekend in Victoria. He did, however, show his strength in the breaststroke and IM events.

Ken wasn't expecting the results he got this weekend, but was pleased overall. "My best swimming highlight so far was when I set a Provincial record in Alberta as a 10 year old".

Ken took home three GOLD medals in the 100m Br, 400m Fr, and 200m Br, as well as four SILVER medals in the 200m Fr, 400m IM, 200m IM and 100m Fr for individual events.

With over 600 swimmers in attendance and the hot streak BC swimmers have been on this season, there will be many exciting performances to witness this weekend. Times Colonist Opening Day Article

The full Canadian swim team to Beijing will be decided between today and Sunday and the atmosphere is crackling around the Montreal pool, with CBC providing daily TV coverage beginning today at 6:30 p.m. "All the banners are up and the environment is pretty amazing," noted Say, who opens tomorrow with the men's 200-metre freestyle. "There's a nervous energy and buzz around the pool deck and we're ready to go. We're ready to race. I'm in the right frame of mind. All our Island Swimming Club guys are ready to go. [Backstroker] Matt Rose is bursting at the seams. Ryan [Cochrane] is looking like a gem and gets a chance right on opening day [today] to qualify in the 400 freestyle and that would really take the pressure off him the rest of the week. And Stefan [Hirniak] is looking so fast. We worked hard for this moment and are prepared. In front of us this week is a really amazing opportunity for all four of us to qualify for Beijing."

NEWSFLASH: Ryan Cochrane Dazzles the Crowd while setting a new

1500 Fr Canadian Record

Cochrane smashes Canadian record on final day of Trials Canadian swimming is making history. With several swimmers nominated to the Olympic team that have a real shot at winning medals at the Beijing Olympics this summer, there is a sense of rejuvenation and renewed support from fans. The noise was deafening this evening at the Piscines du Parc Olympique facility in Montreal as packed stands filled with enthusiastic fans brought multiple athletes to new Canadian records in style. It may have been the last individual event of Olympic Trials, but it was certainly brought the crowds to the feet, wildly cheering on distance swimming phenom Ryan Cochrane of Island

Swimming to an amazing new Canadian record that puts Cochrane ranked fourth in the world. To put Cochrane's evolution in perspective, four years ago at the 2004 Olympic Trials Cochrane came seventh in this event. This time around, there is no one in Canada that can keep pace with world-class Cochrane.

Making the 'A' final from BC was Sean Penhale of Island Swimming, and Ryan Cochrane showed up for the race sporting a new mini-hawk hairdo. The race proved to be one that will be remembered by all who witnessed it for a very long time. Cochrane had just an amazing swim, and thanks to the stellar announcing by Chris Hindmarch-Watson the 2,000 fans were actually on their feet the entire last 500m of Cochrane's race. Seven seconds faster than the Canadian record at the 800m mark, it was an electric performance by Ryan Cochrane who would break the

Canadian record by five seconds with a new time of 14:54.66. In the interview with the CBC following the race, Cochrane attributed his outstanding performance to the fans stating that the last 500 metres of the race were quite painful, but hearing and seeing the fans fed him in the last stretch of the race, pushing him through the pain. Waiting for Cochrane was coach Randy Bennett to give him a huge smile and a big hug. This performance ranks 19-year old Ryan Cochrane fourth in the world. Don't be surprised to see this amazing BC talent on the podium in Beijing.

Day One Highlights:

NEWSFLASH: Ryan Cochrane Sets a New CANADIAN RECORD on the first night of the CN Trials

The last event of the evening was the Mens 400m Free. With three BC athletes in this final, and favourite Ryan Cochrane of Island Swimming facing the current Canadian

record holder in this event Andrew Hurd, the crowd was on the edge of their seat as these men stepped up onto the blocks. Ryan Cochrane has swam for coach Randy Bennett the past six years. Cochrane has firmly established that he is a world class distance swimmer, able to take on the giants such as Grant Hackett. Hurd took a slight lead in the first 100m as Ryan Cochrane easily kept pace just beside him. By the 150m mark, Cochrane and Hurd had a commanding lead on the competition, but maintained their head-to-head race as they appropached the 200m mark. Off the turn at 200m, a few powerful dolphins kicks and Cochrane took a slight lead over Hurd. Pushing off the last 50m Cochrane turned on the engine and let loose and explosive kick that enabled him to take a commanding lead over Andrew Hurd. Finishing first with a new Canadian record of 3:47.92, 19-year old Ryan Cochrane earned a ticket to his first Olympics. Blake Worsley of the UBC Dolphins comes from a fami ly of swimmers: his mother was a Dolphin who competed in the 70's. Right on the best time performance from this morning, Worsley swam to a fifth place finish with 4:00.08. Anders McIntyre will be a name to remember in the future. In the interview after qualifying for his first Olympic team, Ryan Cochrane commented: "It's what I wanted to do. It sets me up well for this summer, and takes the pressure off of me for the rest of Trials as I'm already qualified".

Congratulations to Ryan Cochrane on his Canadian record performance in the 400Fr, and his nomination to the Canadian Olympic Team. Ryan's swim was the highest ranked swim of the day.

Another record day for Cochrane

Ryan Cochrane of Victoria continued an extraordinary performance at the Janet Evans International swimming competition in Los Angeles yesterday, breaking his Canadian record in the men's 1,500-metre freestyle for the gold medal.

Cochrane clocked 14 minutes and 50.65 seconds to eclipse his previous mark of 14:54.66 set in April at the Beijing Swimming Trials in Montreal. It was also the fourth-fastest time in the world

this year. Erik Vendt, of the U.S., holds the fastest time at 14:46.78. Ous Mellouli of Tunisia was second yesterday in 14:56.22 and Larsen Jensen of the U.S., third in 14:58.80.

"I definitely swam it differently than at the trials," said Cochrane, 18, who also lowered his 400 freestyle national mark on Saturday. "I didn't rush it as much and didn't overstroke. I knew I was swimming fast from my 400 time and that helped me get out to the lead quickly. I really like the tactics in this race and I felt great when it was over."
