WOMEN’S 2005-06 OUTLOOK

I mpressive. After finishing second at theBig East Championships last year, thatsthe one word to decribe the women’s

swimming and diving team’s performance. The 2004-05 Panthers’ season

marked the best team finish since the1990-91 season when Pitt claimed firstplace.

With 27 placewinners, Pitt nearlydoubled the amount of top-eight finishers inthe conference championship from the pre-vious season. In addition, six school recordswere broken last season, including four dur-ing the conference championship.

Five members of the squad recievedAll-Big East honors-an improvement fromthe 2003-04 season. The women took sec-ond place in three events, while finishing inthird six times.

Now entering his fourth year at thehelm, Head Coach Chuck Knoles saysthat his team is ready to start a new tra-dition of winning and will compete for theconference title.

“We have seen the women’s teamprogress, recently,” said Knoles. “All thework that the team and staff have beendoing for the last two years came to frui-tion in the third year with the squad placingso well in the Big East.”

After opening last season with a 3-2record in dual meets, the Panthers wenton to win seven of the last eight contests, including a five-meet winning streak. Theteam looked impressive with back-to-backwins over Princeton and conference rivalWest Virginia.

Now that Pitt is in one of the largest, major swimming and diving D-I conferenceswith 12 teams, thanks to the addition ofCincinnati and Louisville, winning the Big Eastwill be tough. Adding these two teams toan already strong conference elevates theconference on a national level.

With the addition of 12 newcomersand the loss of only five top performers, the Panthers have a very positive outlookon moving forward this year.

FreestyleThe Panthers have made great strides

improving freestyle performances with sixtop-three finishes at the 2005 Big EastChampionships.

Returning to lead the freestylers aresprinters Jordan Wallace, Kelly

Redcay, Kristin Brown and KellyO’Hara. Wallace, a senior, contributed toall three relay records that were set (200-free, 400-free and 800-free) last year. Inaddition, she was first in the 50 free(23.30), 100 free (50.15) and swam an-chor for the 200-medley relay. Redcay, another senior, assisted on two relays thatplaced among the top two, earning All-BigEast honors. Brown’s sophomore campaignearned her individual and relay Big East hon-ors in addition to her school record-settingswim in the 200 freestyle (1:49.43). Re-turning from an exciting rookie season,O’Hara looks to make an even bigger splashafter assisting on the 200 and 400-freerelay teams. O’Hara also placed fifth in the50 free (23.69) at the conference meet.

Providing depth for the Panthers aresenior Kristin Criner, sophomoresKimmie Baird and Colleen Sullivan andnewcomers Shannon Barr, KendraDecelle, Erin Meehan, Amanda Rich,Stacy Safritt, and Ruth Seifert.

Junior Kathy Siuda will pace the dis-tance core this year. Siuda turned in theteam’s returning top times in both the 500and 1,000 freestyles at 4:55.09 and10:09.54, respectively. Brown and seniorco-captain Amy Miteff will also be countedon for points in the distance events, as eachcontributed to the team’s top-three per-formances.

BreaststrokeSince Big East Champion Cynthia

Snyder graduated last year, the team willrely on the immediate impact of newcom-ers Karla Leite, Ruth Seiffert and ErikaRodriguez.

Leite, a senior national qualifier in the200 breast, will be looked at to replaceSnyder. Seiffert was a four-year All-Stateswimmer during her high school campaign, while Rodriguez was a standout in Venezu-ela with All-Conference honors.

Returning for the Panthers will beSamantha Nasakaitis, who finished withthe team’s third-fastest mark in the 200breast and fourth-fastest time in the 100breast last season.

“The girls that we brought in the lasttwo years have helped us to advance,” com-mented Knoles. “They are as tough as nailsand are going to be a big help in making useven better this year.”

ButterflyLeading the way in the butterfly events

will be Miteff and Florida State transferBrittany Stevens. Miteff placed in boththe 100 and 200 fly in the Big East Cham-pionships, and Stevens was a consolationfinalist in the 100 fly at the ACC Champi-onships.

O’Hara and sophomore SarahWagner will be counted on to add pointsfor the Panthers, while rookie AmandaRich will add depth.

BackstrokePitt returns the bulk of the

backstrokers from last year’s roster. Jun-ior Andrea Shoust will lead the group forthe second consecutive year. Shoust fin-ished third in the 200 back, while takingsixth in the 100 back at the Big East Cham-pionships. She also held the top time in boththe 100 and 200 back for the Panthers.

Other key returners are Redcay andWallace, who will look to add strong scoringopportunities.

Freshman Laura Rosenberg will pro-vide depth in the backstroke events.

DivingThree divers stepped up and made Pitt

a contender on the boards last season, in-cluding Megan McCandless, KristinCaiazzo and Colleen Kristobak.

As a freshman, McCandless broke intothe conference championships with two third-place finishes, earning All-Big East accolades.

In the three-meter event Caiazzo andKristobak took fourth- and fifth-place fin-ishes to complete the conference’s top-fivedivers.

Backing up the returners will be fresh-men Rebecca Brown, Naomi Orlandoand Kaylee Riggs.

“We have become considerably deeperwith the addition of our freshmen,” said As-sistant Head Coach Julian Krug. “Our goalis to make an appearance in the NCAA Tour-nament for the first time in four years. Thisis a solid group to work with. One that canbe very productive in the upcoming years.”

MEN’S 2004-05 OUTLOOK

Until last season’s surprise second-place performance, Pitt’s men’sswimming and diving team sat at

the top of the Big East for eight consecu-tive years, earning the title the ‘Beast ofthe East.’ Since the emergence of the BigEast Championships in the 1982-83 sea-son, Pitt has won 19 of the 23 confer-ence championships, one hundred and thirtyindividual Big East titles and forty-five con-ference relay wins for a total of 175 first-place finishes.

Last season, Pitt earned first place infour events, while claiming 14 top-threehonors. Nine members of the squad earnedAll-Big East honors, Dennis Nemtsanovwas named Big East Diver of the Year andJulian Krug was named Big East DivingCoach of the Year for the second consecu-tive season.

But the question remains, since theteam was used to being chased, prior tolast season, how will they respond afterbeing caught?

“The men have had a tradition of beingone of the toughest teams in the east,”said Head Coach Chuck Knoles. “Whenyou have a tradition of being the ‘Beast ofthe East’ and then you’re second-best, itdoesn’t taste very good. I have seen oneof the biggest turnarounds in competitivespirit and heart than I have ever seen. Theirgoal is to regain the tradition one day at atime and become one of the best teams inthe east and a player on the national level.”Pitt returns 19 veteran swimmers anddivers and adds eight freshmen who areready to fill the holes left to help the teamregain its top position in the conference.

Chuck Knoles enters his 16th seasonas the head coach of the Panthers. Knolesis committed to upholding a tradition in thepool and his goals for national successhaven’t changed.

FreestylePitt placed in the top eight at the con-

ference meet seven times in freestyleevents last year. Four of the five top sprint-ers are back for another year, including spe-cialist and tri-captain Darryl Washing-ton.

Washington won the 50 free (20.11)and was the leadoff swimmer for the BigEast champion 200 free relay team. Wash-

ington earned four All-Big East honors lastseason.

Seniors Tommy Bird and JasonMiller were also on that champion relayteam and return to the lineup this season.Other returnees set to make an impactare juniors Jeff Leath and NathanMcCutcheon.

“Miller and Washington are vocal lead-ers,” noted Knoles. “They will give you theiropinion on anything and everything and mo-tivate the team constantly. They are alsoeffective by leading by example.”

Washington is the top-returner for the200 free. Chris George should lead thecharge in the 500, but will compete againstSteve Jackson, McCutcheon and fresh-man Jonathan Buchanan for that posi-tion.

Junior Ross Lannan will provide depthin the free, backstroke and IM. SeniorMichael Bernardi, junior AndrewSheaff, sophomore Scott Shearer andfreshman Patrick Mansfield are all ex-pected to move into key roles in thefreestyle events.

BreaststrokeWarren Barnes, who had a success-

ful freshman campaign, will look to lead thePanthers in the breaststroke. Barnes fin-ished among the top six at the Big EastChampionships in both the 100 and 200breaststroke events and is the returningtop finisher in the 200 breast with a timeof 2:02.74.

Barnes is joined by junior Dave Mont-gomery and sophomore Jared Martinon the breaststroke roster.

ButterflyMiller is a tri-captain and returns for his

senior campaign as the Panthers’ top-flyerfor three consecutive seasons. Miller hasa total of nine All-Big East honors to hiscredit.

Also returning are seniors Chad White,Bernardi and Bird, as well as sophomoresDavid Anderson and George. Look forWashington, a freestyle specialist, in thisevent as well.

Along with the others, Miller’s guidanceover freshmen Chris Howard and An-drew Kyrejko will be a key to the team’ssuccess.

BackstrokeLast season the Panthers had a tremen-

dous amount of depth in the backstroke andthis year most of the top performers areback.

Bird and Leath will lead Pitt, as bothearned Big East honors after they turned insecond-place finishes in the conferencechampionships. Bird placed in the 100, whileLeath paced the team in the 200 back.

As a junior, Bernardi provided depth inthe 100 and Anderson, Jackson and Lannanall return from the squad’s 200 back top-five list.

Backing up the experienced upper classwill be freshman Andrew Burkey.

“Our goal is to be a great swimming teamand the experience we have coming back inour backstroke helps us,” said coach Knoles.“We don’t want to be just a good regionalor D-I team. We want to be a great D-Iswimming team, and all the coaches sharethat philosophy.”

DivingPitt’s diving roster has consistently pro-

vided the squad with points and has keptthe event as the Panthers’ most success-ful part of the meet.

Senior Dennis Nemtsanov and sopho-more Jeremy Stultz return as the one-two punch on the board. AlthoughNemtsanov owns a title in both the 1M and3M diving events in his career, the two ofthem combined to capture the gold and sil-ver medals at the Big East Championshipsin both events in 2005. As a freshman,Stultz impacted the squad with a title in the1M diving event and placed second in the3M diving event, while it was vice-versa forNemtsanov.

“Even though we have less divers thisyear, we have an exceptionally stronggroup,” said Assistant Head Coach for Div-ing, Julian Krug. “The addition of the fresh-men will add competition to the divers inthe top half, while Stultz’s return this sea-son will give us a chance to make a pres-ence in the NCAAs.”

Senior tri-captain Adam Natishyn re-turns to the diving roster, while newcom-ers Eric Becker and AleksandrVolovetski look to have a breakthrough intheir first year.

HEAD COACH CHUCK KNOLES

Personal Info

Hometown: Pittsburgh, Pa.

High School: J.E.B. Stuart (FallsChurch, Va.)

College Education: Northern ArizonaUniversity, 1976, B.A. dual major inSpanish translation/Journalism and edi-torial writing; M.A.Ed. in secondary edu-cation and journalism, 1981.

Chuck Knoles’ commitment to suc- cess reaches far beyond just win- ning swim meets. As he enters

his 16th year with the men’s programand his fourth year with the women’sprogram, Knoles has shown that beinga dominant fixture in the Big East raceand a competitor on the national sceneis far more than just a dream, but areachable reality.

Due to the fact that the men haveplaced in the top three at the confer-ence championships in all 15 years un-der the guidance of Knoles, including 11titles, and the women’s darting perfor-mance to the runner-up spot last sea-son, he knows it takes a commitment toperforming at the highest level to win.

The commitment in his student-ath-letes is clearly evident. After taking overthe reigns of the women’s team in 2002-03, the Panthers promptly broke 13school records in his first season at thehelm. The following season, morerecords fell and the women’s team re-ceived votes in the CSCAA nationalrankings for the first time in nearly a de-cade.

Last year, the women established astrong freestyle core and broke morerecords, setting the Panthers up for achance in the postseason.

His unparalleled enthusiasm and de-sire to place Pittsburgh among the top15 schools in the nation remains an at-tainable goal as the Panthers enter the2005-06 season.

In the past three seasons, Knoleshas had two Honorable Mention All-Americans earn three plaudits and acombined 14 Big East individual and re-lay titles.

“We are on track to being one ofthe best combined programs in the east,”Knoles said. “I have surrounded myselfwith the finest coaching staff in Division Iswimming and diving.”

During his tenure, Knoles has con-sistently maintained the Panthers’ repu-tation as one of the top collegiate pro-grams in the East and continues to leadhis teams to success year after year.

But it hasn’t been easy. Knoles isaware of how competitive collegiateswimming has become, and demandsthat his student-athletes strive to main-tain the right edge to compete.

“You must go into every competi-tion as tough as nails,” Knoles said. “Youlearn from winning, just as you learnfrom losing. Hard work is part of theformula for success, and we keep onour kids to stay in shape and to trainhard. There is no real ‘off’ period. Youmust do it year-round to compete andto win at the big-time NCAA Division Ilevel.”

By following Knoles’ formula for suc-cess, his goal for a national top-15 fin-ish for the men’s team fell just shortthe past three years as the Panthersfinished 17th in the dual meet rankingsand in last year’s preseason poll.

Knoles has demonstrated his abilityto win as a coach. In addition to the Pan-thers’ 11 men’s Big East champion-ships, his teams have also recordedthree second-place finishes and onethird-place finish. His teams have a com-bined 149-58 dual meet record, while15 of Knoles’s Pittsburgh swimmershave been either Olympic Trial qualifiers

Head Diving Coach

The Krug File...

A fixture on the Panther athletic scene for over two decades, Julian Krug

enters his 27th season asPittsburgh’s head diving coach in2005-06.

Krug’s success has earned himthe title of Assistant Head Coachfor diving. For two years, diverDennis Nemtsanov has earnedHonorable Mention All-Americahonors under Krug’s tutelage. This is all after a 2001-02NCAA qualifier in Michael Wells. The last three out of five years(2001, 2004 and 2005) Krug has beennamed the Big East’s Men’s Diving Coach ofthe Year.

Krug believes that preparing oneself to thebest of his or her abilities is the most impor-tant thing his performers should strive for,as opposed to focusing on first-place finishes.

“I believe that if you train hard with a posi-tive attitude, winning will take care of itself,”Krug said.

Success has been synonymous with Krug’sdivers, as they have consistently garneredhigh honors. During the past 12 seasons, hehas produced six repeat NCAA qualifiers, threeAll-Americans and five Honorable Mention All-Americans.

Head Coach Chuck Knoles is very impressedwith Krug’s contributions to the Panthersswimming and diving program.

“We have one of the fewest swimmingand diving teams, where the divers get upfor morning workouts. Rarely do divers getup and they do it here because the teamfeels like one. We have a diving coach thatagrees with that idea,” said Knoles.

A standout diver himself, in 1974 Krug

Julian KrugAssistant Head Coach for Diving

became the first person to successfully ex-ecute a 5½ front somersault dive from 10meters. He performed the dive at Kimball’sDiving Camp in Brandon, Fla.

During the 2004 Summer Olympics inAthens, Greece, Krug and his wife, Dorothy, worked as statisticians for NBC-TV. Theyalso spent three weeks in Sydney, Australia,in 2000 and in Atlanta doing the same forthe 1996 Summer Olympics.

From 1997-2003, Krug served as acoach for members of the Senior Nationalteam at the Mexico Cup. He additionallyhelped develop two Olympian divers in DavidPichler (1996, 2000) and Karen LaFace(1992).

Krug was elected to the United StatesDiving Board of Directors in 2000 and wasalso appointed to the NCAA Rules Commit-tee. A member of the U.S. Diving EducationCommittee, Krug is a National Spotting Cer-tifier and has served as a member of theSenior National Rules Committee.

Krug and his wife reside in Kennedy Town-ship, and have two children, Cassidy (20)and Kyle (16).

M arian Clark will now at as the Director of Operations/Senior Assistant Coach for both the men’s and women’sswimming teams. She is in her fourth season working

with both the squad after serving as head coach of the women’steam at Pittsburgh for nine seasons from 1993-2002.

Helping guide the men’s team to its seventh and eighth con-secutive Big East titles and having almost every women’s teamrecord fall over the past two seasons are some of the accomplish-ments Clark enjoyed in her first two seasons with the combinedprogram.

Clark actually began her coaching career as an assistant coachat Pittsburgh after graduating from the University in 1988. Sheserved as an assistant coach at both Florida State and Miami be-fore being appointed to head the Pittsburgh women’s program inthe summer of 1993. Her appreciation for the rewards and ben-efits intercollegiate athletics can provide for its young participantsis not lost in her coaching.

“I enjoyed my undergraduate years at Pittsburgh,” Clark said.“I learned not only how to set goals within a team structure, butalso how to achieve them by working and interacting with teammembers. A team commitment is essential for success. Obviously,I want individuals to excel, but I also want them to bring the otherson the team along with them.”

Clark was a major contributor to four Big East Conferencechampionships during her undergraduate years at Pittsburgh. Shewas a Big East champion in the 500 freestyle in 1986, and in the400 individual medley in 1988.

Her teamwork was also on display when she swam for eightPittsburgh relay teams that captured Big East first-place finishes. An exercise physiology major as an undergraduate, Clark gradu-ated cum laude and understands the main reason a student-athletecomes to college.

“We need to continue to develop student-athletes in all as-pects of life,” she said. “We are very committed to improving inthe pool and on the boards. But we also want to emphasize thatgaining a college education is the top priority for our team mem-bers. We encourage them to grow mentally, physically and emo-tionally.”

The results have been nothing but impressive. For six consecu-tive years under the guidance of Clark, the Panthers were selectedto the College Swim Coaches’ Association All-America AcademicTeam list. In 2001, Pittsburgh ranked 17th in the country amongwomen’s swimming and diving teams. The team was also rewardedwith the University’s Academic Award for three consecutive years, which is given annually to the Pittsburgh athletic team that boaststhe highest grade-point average.

“We take great pride in our academics,” said Clark. “I reallybelieve that bright student-athletes find a way to succeed both inthe classroom and in the pool.”

PANTHERS IN THE COMMUNITY

Panthers Swimming and Diving hasalways been about giving back tothe community. Five years ago, the

team contacted the local branch of Spe-cial Olympics to see if there was some-thing they could do to help. What theyfound was there were dozens of athletesout there who trained all year, but onlywere able to compete once — at theirofficial Special Olympics meet.

The Panthers decided to help, andhave since annually hosted a meet for Spe-cial Olympics in the spring. They’ve had anumber of teams from the area includingthe JCC, Sunrise, AVS, the North Stars, the Pittsburgh Pros and Twin Rivers. Inthe past three years, they’ve hosted alarge number of incredibly gifted athletesin helping to promote their sport.

Panthers Swimming and Diving andthe community–always a winning combi-nation!

As part of its commitment to the Pittsburgh community, the Panthers’ swimming anddiving coaching staff and team has held a starts-and-turns clinic for local swimmersthe past three seasons. The members of the Panthers’ swimming and diving teams have embraced the opportunity to

work with and help younger athletes. The Pittsburgh coaches and swimmers demonstrated the properways to conduct starts and turns. The clinics were free and were held at the completion of home dualmeets.

“Giving back to the community is a part of what this program is about,” Head Coach ChuckKnoles said. “I think the Pittsburgh swimmers had as much fun as the clinic attendees.”

In addition, the team leaped to volunteer its time, this fall, following the Hurricane Katrinadisaster by participating in a fundraiser sponsored by the Student-Athlete Association in conjuntionwith the Student Government Body on campus. The fundraiser submitted all funds raised to theAmerican Red Cross.

PANTHERS IN THE COMMUNITY

E very year, the freshmen from the swimming and diving teamsparticipate in an annual project. This year’s project featureda dunk tank, Athletic Director Jeff Long and tons of fun.

The freshmen gathered at FanFest, prior to the Pitt-YoungstownState football game at Heinz Field in late September.

After getting help from the athletic department, Jeff Long showedhis spirit and sportsmanship by taking a seat in the dunk tank. Fivethrows later with the crowd cheering, Mr. Long met the water!

In years past, they have held mock relay races using blue sheets asthe pool water, and have also tested the reaction times of kids andadults. This was the first year they ran a dunk tank and because ofthe enormous success and popularity, they are already looking for-ward to next year.

MEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING HISTORY

Ben GradyHead Coach -- Swimming and Diving

University of Pittsburgh (1939-1966)Ben Grady was a three-time All-America diver in

high school and a three-time All-American at the Uni-versity of Michigan as well. In 1937, Grady was theNCAA 3-meter springboard champion in his senioryear with the Wolverines.

During his coaching career at Pittsburgh, withthe exception of 1942-45 (served as an officer in theU.S. Navy), Grady molded one strong team after an-other at Pittsburgh. He had 14 winning seasons andled the 1948 team to an undefeated season.

From 1939-59, Grady’s teams finished no lowerthan third place in the Eastern Collegiate SwimmingAssociation Championships and won an unprecedentedfive straight ECSA titles from 1952-56. He accom-plished it all without a pool of his own until 1962 whenhe spear-headed the planning and design of Trees Pool.

At the 2003 ECAC Championships, the Panthers’new Daktronics scoreboard was dedicated to Grady, for his commitment to the swimming and diving pro-gram.
