Mike DeAnna, Bruce Baumgartner, and now Tim Flynn. Edinboro Universityhas been blessed with outstanding wrestlingcoaches since elevating the program toDivision I status in the mid-80's. Flynnenters his eighth season in charge of theFighting Scot wrestlers, and prior to that heserved as an assistant coach underBaumgartner for five years.

The former Penn State All-Americanhas produced quite a legacy in his sevenseasons at the helm. Edinboro has dominat-ed eastern wrestling circles during Flynn'sreign, winning the Eastern Wrestling LeagueChampionship six of the last seven years, along with the Pennsylvania State AthleticConference Tournament title six times in thelast seven campaigns. The Fighting Scotsfinished 24th at last year's NCAA Division INational Championships, marking the sec-ond straight year in that position. Edinborohas finished in the top 25 every year ofFlynn's tenure. That includes a 12th placefinish in 2001 and a 14th place finish in 2002.

Edinboro has a 73-26-2 record in dualmatches under Flynn. During that periodhe has produced 13 All-Americans and 56national qualifiers, capped by JoshKoscheck's national championship at 174lbs. in 2001. Koscheck became Edinboro'ssecond all-time national champion at theDivision I level, and with a third place finishtwo years ago, became Edinboro's first four-time All-American. A year ago Edinborohad two All-Americans in Matt King, whofinished third at 165 lbs., and Nate Yetzer, who placed eighth at 174 lbs.

Flynn was recognized as the PSACCoach of the Year for the fifth time in 2004after guiding Edinboro to a 10-3 finish and athird straight PSAC title. In 2003 he wasnamed both the EWL and PSAC Coach ofthe Year. He has been recognized as theEWL Coach of the Year three times.

The 2003-04 Fighting Scot editionmatured as the year went on, easily captur-ing the PSAC crown as five grapplersbrought home individual titles, one shy ofthe school record. Just over a month laterthe Fighting Scots rallied from six points

down entering the final session to tie WestVirginia for the EWL championship. Arecord-tying four Scots were crowned cham-pions, with six Edinboro wrestlers qualify-ing for Nationals.

Edinboro also won the EWL dual meettitle for the fourth time in six seasons, unseating West Virginia with a 25-13 upsetof the Mountaineers in Morgantown andending WVU's 19-match EWL winningstreak. The Fighting Scots posted a perfect7-0 record in EWL competition.

A youthful Edinboro squad surprisedthe experts by finishing with a 10-5 recordin 2003, winning both the EWL and PSACChampionships. The Scots only finishedthird during the EWL dual meet season, butthanks to four first place finishes and all tenwrestlers placing no lower than fourth,Edinboro outdistanced West Virginia toreclaim the EWL Tournament crown fromthe Mountaineers. The PSACChampionship featured four individualchampions. Matt King went on to placefourth at 165 lbs. at Nationals, with eightScots qualifying for Nationals.

The Fighting Scots posted a 10-4 ledgerthe year before, extending their EWLunbeaten streak to 25 straight matchesbefore an injury-ravaged team suffered aloss at Lock Haven. The Boro edged LockHaven in the PSAC Championships, andlater went on to finish second to WestVirginia at the EWLTournament. Seven FightingScots qualified for Nationals atEWLs, with Koscheck andCory Ace going on to earn All-American status at Nationals.Ace finished eighth at 133 lbs.

Edinboro finished with an11-3-1 record in 2001, conclud-ing the campaign with an EWLunbeaten streak of 22 matches. The streak was interrupted bya 16-16 tie with Virginia Techearly in the season, butEdinboro went on to finish asthe regular season EWL cham-pion for the sixth time in thelast eight years, including thelast three seasons. The Scotswere 21-0-1 during their 22-match unbeaten streak.Edinboro then easily outdis-tanced Lock Haven at the EWLChampionships.

To top it off, a record-tyingnine Fighting Scots qualifiedfor Nationals, helping the Borofinish with an all-time highpoint total in Iowa City, IA.The 12th place finish led alleastern schools, and was thehighest finish by an Edinborosquad since the 1996-97 squad

finished sixth. Flynn was recognized as theEWL Coach of the Year following the 2001season.

Fighting Scots Mainly a Team of Unknowns BehindYetzer and Bunch

Anyone familiar with Tim Flynnknows the Edinboro University wrestlingcoach isn't about to back down from a chal-lenge. In addition, Flynn is an affirmedoptimist. Tell him that a glass is half empty,he'll tell you it's half full; that the sky is part-ly cloudy, and he'll say it's partly sunny.

So the veteran coach isn't about to let alittle thing like a youthful roster get in theway of Edinboro's pursuit for a sixth PSACand EWL title in the last seven years. TheFighting Scots, young a year ago as well butwith seven starters returning, finished witha 10-3 record a year ago, including a perfect7-0 in the Eastern Wrestling League.Edinboro went on to capture its sixth PSACChampionship in the last seven years, thenrallied for a first-place tie with West Virginiaat the EWL Tournament, marking the sixthtime in the last seven years Edinboro hadfinished first. The Fighting Scots ended upfinishing 24th at Nationals for the secondyear in a row, sending six wrestlers to St.Louis.

"It's a weird season," grins Flynn."Normally we have more sure things. Thisyear we have a lot of unknowns. We're sit-ting two guys who were in the EWL finalslast year. It will be interesting. Withoutquestion, we'll be young."

Flynn breaks his team down into threegroups. The first is comprised of returningveterans Nate Yetzer, Shawn Bunch, RonDoppelheuer, Jacob Gray and Joe Hennis.

"We have five guys who are pretty

experienced," related Flynn. “First and fore-most those five guys have to come through. They have to be automatic winners. Wehave two kids in Yetzer and Bunch, whohave beaten top guys. Other guys haveshown signs of being great, but have to bemore consistent."

The middle group holds the key toEdinboro's season. Comprised of wrestlerslike Matt Hill, Zach Plerhoples, Eric Ring,Mike LaBella and Jim Gibson, they've hadsome experience and now must mature.

"That second group will make or breakus," Flynn flatly assessed. "They've had achance to redshirt and most have been inthe program two to three years. They haveto take a step to be consistent winners. They've been working hard. I expect themto step in and do some damage."

The third group is comprised of animpressive recruiting class that was rated14th by InterMat and seventh by WrestlingUSA Magazine. Some of the blue chips, such as Jay Morrison, Phil Moricone and JoeFendone, will likely redshirt. But the talentin the last two recruiting classes leavesFlynn to believe his team is once againreloading, and not rebuilding.

Edinboro welcomes back ShawnBunch, who used an Olympic redshirt yearlast season. A two-time national qualifier,he returns at 133 lbs. But a pair of nationalqualifiers will redshirt this year, leavingFlynn's lineup up in the air at a number ofweight classes. Alex Clemsen has earnedtwo trips to Nationals at 184 lbs., while

Deonte Penn made his firstvisit to Nationals a year agoat 149 lbs.

Despite the uncertaintyand potentially youthfullineup, Flynn enters thisseason like any other -expecting his Fighting Scotsto challenge for the PSACand EWL Championships."We need the kids torespond," he admitted. "Ithink we can be good."

Edinboro opens the sea-son on November 13th,hosting the Avalon Duals.Flynn has once again puttogether a demandingschedule, particularly forsuch a young team. "Wehave a younger lineup, yetwe have Penn State here, early on, plus we wrestle aVirginia team which fin-ished in the top twenty,Appalachian State, which is

an up-and-coming team, and we go toCornell and to LasVegas. We'll seeMinnesota among others at the SouthernScuffle, and the field at the Virginia Duals isalways strong. A year ago we wrestledArizona State and two years ago we facedIllinois and Lehigh.

"It's a very challenging schedule withan inexperienced lineup. These kids have togrow up in a hurry."

Here's a look at the Fighting Scotsweight-class by weight-class:

125 lbs.A year ago Edinboro entered the season

with two-time national qualifier Jacob Grayavailable at 125 lbs.

But midway through the year Graymoved up to 133 lbs. That left freshmenChris Pruden as the starter. He finishedwith a 7-18 record.

Flynn will call on freshmen Pat Wayneand Greg Sill to battle for the starting job.Wayne was the 2004 Massachusetts statechampion at 125 lbs. and finished third atthe New England Tournament while com-peting for Lowell High School. He finishedhis career with a 121-16 record. Sill was athree-year starter at Bethel Park (Pa.) HighSchool.

"These are two untested young kids,"emphasized Flynn. "They're working hard. We're trying to get Sill a little bigger, andwe're trying to get Wayne trimmed down."

133 lbs.The Fighting Scots welcome back

Shawn Bunch, a two-time national qualifierwho sat out the 2003-04 season as anOlympic redshirt. An extremely talentedwrestler, Flynn feels this is the year thejunior finally breaks through as an All-American.

"I think Shawn's a little bit bigger andstronger," Flynn pointed out. "The sky's thelimit. We're trying to work on the thingsthat make the difference in March. Weexpect him to be in the hunt for the nationalchampionship."

Bunch owns a 52-20 career record. As afreshmen he went 22-6, finishing one winshy of earning All-American status whilecompeting at 125 lbs. He was denied thatwin by a narrow 12-10 loss to Cornell'sTravis Lee, the 2003 national champion at125 lbs. and a fifth-place finisher at 133 lbs. ayear ago. As a sophomore Bunch went 30-14 and was named the OutstandingWrestler at the EWL Tournament after win-ning his second straight title. He lost two ofthree matches at Nationals.Jacob Gray, a three-time national qualifier, moves up to 149 lbs.

141 lbs.Flynn is hoping to see a healthy Ron

Doppelheuer at 141 lbs. A year ago the juniorbattled a series of injuries, the last an elbowinjury which cut short his EWL Tournament.Despite the numerous maladies he went 26-15with 12 falls, tied for the team lead.

Doppelheuer placed in four tournaments, including a second place finish at the Body BarInvitational and a third place finish at thePSAC Championships. He owns a 49-30 careerrecord.

"We hope he's healthy," commented Flynn."He had a long year with one injury afteranother. We're looking for a full year ofwrestling. If he commits totally, I think wehave another All-American. It's certainly with-in his reach. He just needs health and consis-tency."

Several other young wrestlers add plentyof depth, although it's highly likely a couplewill redshirt. The most likely candidates arefreshmen Ryan Morgan and Seth McAlister.Morgan is a promising newcomer who hadknee surgery in August. He was the Ohio statechampion at 140 lbs. last year at St. FrancisDeSales High School, finishing the year with a48-1 record. He was rated eighth at 140 lbs. byW.I.N. Magazine.

McAlister wrestled at Oxford Hills HighSchool in Maine, where he was a two-timestate champion and compiled a 154-9 careerrecord. He was named Maine's OutstandingWrestler.

J.T. Taylor is a sophomore who was ineli-gible a year ago. He recorded a 166-4 record asa prepster at Cardinal Gibbons (FL) HighSchool, winning four state championships. "J.T.is a super athlete," Flynn stated. "He has agreat future. It's just how quickly he can pickup more wrestling."

Finally, Rusty Hunt is another of the tal-ented freshmen on the roster. He wrestled atFranklin (NJ) High School, where he finishedwith a 24-3 record at 135 lbs. as a senior.

149 lbs.Deonte Penn, the EWL champion and the

runnerup at the PSAC Championships, madegreat strides a year ago, finishing with a 27-13record and 12 falls, tied for the team lead.Flynn hopes a redshirt season will make Penneven better in the future. He continues togrow, and will likely compete in open tourna-ments at 165 lbs.

"Deonte has grown quite a bit. He willwrestle at 165 lbs. this year. Next year we thinkhe'll step in and be an All-American candi-date," commented Flynn.

With Penn redshirting, Jacob Gray isexpected to jump up two weight classes to fillthe void. A year ago Gray began the year asthe starter at 125 lbs., where he was a two-timenational qualifier. He moved to 133 lbs. mid-way through the year, finishing as the EWLchampion with an upset of Virginia Tech's

David Hoffman to qualify for nationals for thethird time. He also won his second PSACChampionship. Gray ended the year with a32-9 ledger, boosting his career record to 80-43.

"The big question is how he will handlethe weight," conceded Flynn. "He came back alot bigger. Jacob has always been one of ourhardest workers. He's goal-oriented. He wantsto be our first wrestler to win PSAC champi-onships at three different weight classes. He'shard-nosed. Nothing Jacob does will surpriseus."

In what is easily Edinboro's deepestweight class, no fewer than five wrestlers willmake sure Gray keeps working hard. Tworeside in Flynn's middle group of wrestlers -those with enough experience to make a differ-ence. Zach Plerhoples is a third-year sopho-mores who saw plenty of action a year ago. Hewent 12-10, capturing fifth place in theEdinboro Open.

"This is really a make-or-break year forhim," stressed Flynn. “He’s redshirted a yearand been a backup for a year. If he takes onemore step he'll be right where we need him.”

Rick McLaughlin moves up from 141 lbs.,where his season was cut short due to a brokenleg. Like Hill and Plerhoples, he is a third-yearsophomore who has plenty of potential. Hewas 6-5 with a fourth place finish at the EMUOpen at 141 lbs.

"Rick has shown flashes," Flynn stated."He's beat some good kids. The question iswhether or not he commits totally to the sportand gets his weight under control."

Sophomore Matt Chelsted saw limitedaction a year ago, finishing with a 1-4 record."Matt was beat up last year, with a lot ofinjuries. He's one of those kids who will bene-fit from a whole year of training if healthy,"commented Flynn.

Freshman Jay Morrison is one of the jew-els of Edinboro's highly-rated recruiting class.A three-time PIAA place-winner at WhitehallHigh School, he was the runnerup last year at140 lbs., concluding his senior year with a 36-7record. Morrison had a 140-30 career mark andwas rated seventh by W.I.N. Magazine at 140lbs. and was 119th on InterMat's Top 200Recruits.

"We're really excited about him,"exclaimed Flynn. "He has a super future. He'sa blue-chip kid who could grow. He may red-shirt. We'll see how he does at wrestleoffs, butwe expect big things."

157 lbs.With Eric Ring, last year's starter at 157

lbs., expected to move up to 174 lbs. thisweight class is wide open. First in line is JoshYetzer, a senior who Flynn feels is ready toenjoy some of the succes his brother Nate hashad. Yetzer 7-6 last year, capturing third placeat the UB Open at 157 lbs.

"Josh has trained all summer with hisbrother," Flynn pointed out. "I think he's ready

Page 10: 2004-05 Wrestling Media Guide

Edinboro University Wrestling 2004-05 page 8

for a breakout year. He's put in the time."Yetzer figures to receive a stiff challenge

from Matt Hill, a third-year sophomore. Hillcompeted at 149 lbs. a year ago, posting an 18-11 record.

Flynn compares Hill to Plerhoples, feelingboth are wrestlers who need to step up. “LikeZach, Matt has redshirted a year and been abackup for a year. It’s a make-or-break season. Will they be a force, or just one of those kidsthat's an average wrestler."

Michael Ashby is a junior who has beenbeset by injuries throughout his career. He was6-3 while competing at 149 lbs. a year ago."Mike has always been one of our most consis-tent workers, he just needs to stay healthy,"Flynn stated.

Freshmen Hayden Harrison andMohamed Osman add further depth.Harrison, in particular, bears watching. Fromnearby General McLane High School, he has afifth place finish at the PIAA StateChampionships to his credit, along with settingschool records for season wins (41), career wins(135), and career pins (67).

"Hayden has a real bright future," notedFlynn. "He's already one of our hardest work-ers. It won't be long before he's in our lineup. He has great attitude and a great work ethic."

Osman wrestled at Rocky Hill HighSchool in Connecticut, where he was the Class5 state champion at 160 lbs.

165 lbs.Under normal circumstances losing a

wrestler the caliber of Matt King would leave acoach scrambling. Kingonly finished third atNationals, concluding abrilliant career in whichhe was a two-time All-American and recored 132career wins.

But with seniorNate Yetzer droppingdown from 174 lbs., Flynnexpects nothing but con-tinued success at 165 lbs.Yetzer finished eighth atNationals to earn All-American honors in hissecond time as a nationalqualifier. He finished theyear with an impressive37-6 ledger, bettering hiswin total in his first twoseasons.

Yetzer was a dom-inant wrestler, finishingwith eight wins by techni-cal fall and ten by majordecision. He placed firstat the EWL Tournament, the PSACChampionships, the BodyBar Invitational, and the

EMU Open, along with a second place finish atthe Southern Scuffle and third place at the LasVegas Invitational. His three losses atNationals were to the second, third and ninthseeds. Yetzer now ascends the throne asEdinboro's top wrestler.

"Nate looks great," beamed Flynn. "Hehad a great summer. He's going down aweight, and we think he'll be in the mix for anational championship. He just needs toimprove a little bit every month."

The future also appears bright, with Pennexpected to step in a year from now.

174 lbs.In one of the more interesting battles

junior Eric Ring moves up two weight classesto compete with senior Chris Bala and fresh-man Phil Moricone for the starting role at 174lbs. Ring has had an up-and-down career withthe Fighting Scots, finishing with an 11-15record a year ago while serving as the regularat 157 lbs. He placed fourth at the PSACChampionships.

"Eric has a lot to prove," admitted Flynn."He didn't have a real good EWL Tournament. This is a more natural weight for him. It willallow him to focus on wrestling a lot more."

Should Ring emerge as the starter,Moricone could well be redshirted. But he isdefinitely a wrestler to keep an eye on, and oneof the top recruits in a star-studded class. Athree-time New Hampshire state champion, hewon the 171 lb. title as a senior after winning at160 lbs. as a junior and 152 lbs. as a sophomore. He was 53-2 a year ago, capping a career inwhich he went 174-10 and won two NewEngland Tournament championships. He wasrated sixth by InterMat at 171 lbs., and was190th on their list of Top 200 Recruits.

"He's pretty good," deadpanned Flynn."Phil is part of a super recruiting class. He'svery serious about wrestling, and a great work-er. He has a great future."

Flynn is also equally enthused with Bala, asenior who has made great strides of late."Over time Chris has made himself reallygood," noted Flynn. "He's one of our moreimproved wrestlers, doing it quietly. It's toughwhen you're behind Matt King and NateYetzer, but he's one of our hardest workers."

After entering the year with a 4-9 careerrecord, Bala went 19-12 last season. Thatincluded a third place finish at the UB Open.

184 lbs.As with Deonte Penn, Alex Clemsen will

will redshirt in 2004-05, leaving a hole at 184lbs. Clemsen is a two-time national qualifierwho won his second PSAC championship intwo years as a sophomore, finishing second tonational champion Greg Jones at the EWLTournament. He also took first place at theEMU Open and third at the Southern Scuffle.Clemsen had a 22-6 record despite missing sixweeks after early-season knee surgery. He has

a 50-21 career mark."Like Deonte Penn, when Alex comes back

he'll be a contender for All-American honors,"predicted Flynn. "He's been dinged up. Hejust needs to get bigger and stronger."

With Clemsen out, Jim Gibson drops backdown from 197 lbs. to compete with DonaldWalker for the starting job. Gibson began lastseason at 184 lbs. before moving up to 197 lbs.He served as the regular until going downwith an injury in late January. The third-yearsophomore finished with a 13-11 record, plac-ing fifth at the Body Bar Invitational.

"Jim will benefit if he can get his bodychanged," stated Flynn. "He's made more of acommitment this offseason."

Walker is a sophomore who wrestled at174 lbs. a year ago, finishing with an 8-12record. "He's a young guy ready to cut loose,"Flynn assessed. "He looks a little bigger, a littlestronger. We'll have to see how far he's come."

197 lbs.Youth will be served at 197 lbs., with four

youngsters vying for the starting job. Theincumbent is Mike LaBella, who took over forGibson in late January and showed plenty ofpromise down the stretch. The sophomoreended the year with a 16-15 record, barely los-ing in the PSAC Championship title match toBloomsburg's Chad Hoare in his first week asthe starter. He would go on to post one ofEdinboro's biggest wins of the year, upsettingnationally-ranked Matt Daddino of WestVirginia as Edinboro upset the Mountaineers toclinch the EWL dual meet title.

"Mike had some bright spots last year,"noted Flynn. "He has gotten better, and had areal productive summer. He has taken a step. Now we need him to be a consistent winner."

Jeremy Mosley redshirted last year whilerecovering from knee surgery which forcedhim to miss his senior year of high school. Hewent 3-8, taking third place at the SRU Open, but carries an impressive resume', including aFlorida state championship as a sophomore.

"Jeremy is a second-year kid like Walker. He has to remain healthy. Hopefully he'll seemore time this year."

Flynn brought in a pair of top-notchrecruits to push LaBella and Mosley. JoeFendone is expected to redshirt, but he may bethe next great wrestler at this weight class, fol-lowing the likes of Jason Robison and DavidShunamon. Fendone is a three-timeMassachusetts state champion at 215 lbs., andwas rated sixth by InterMat at 215 lbs. and 69thon its list of Top 200 Recruits. AmateurWrestling News rated him seventh. He finishedwith a 176-6 career record with 120 falls atCentral Catholic High School, including thefirst undefeated record at 36-0 last year. Hewas only the second wrestler to win three NewEngland Tournament titles.

"Joe is part of a big recruiting class," com-mented Flynn. "He will play a major role in

the future."If Fendone isn't heir to the throne, fellow

freshman Paul Burger might be. Burger is alsoplaying linebacker for the football team, so hewill get a late start. But he's worth the wait. AtMentor (OH) High School he finished third atthe 2004 Ohio State Championships at 215 lbs.,ending his senior year with a 46-4 record. Hethen finished fifth at the NHSCA Nationals.Burger had a 115-27 career record.

Hwt."Joe Hennis is very similar to people like

Kevin Welsh and Jim Straight. When he makesthe full commitment, he will have his pictureon our wall," Flynn pointed out, referring tothe photos of Edinboro All-Americans outsidehis office. "We need Joe to be the big show; anautomatic win."

A year ago Hennis was the EWL andPSAC runnerup, making his first trip toNationals. The junior had the misfortune ofdrawing fifth seed Cole Konrad of Minnesotain the first round, then had to face 12th-seedScott Coleman of Iowa State in the wrestle-backs. Hennis lost both matches to finish witha 27-12 record with 8 falls. He has a careerrecord of 48-25.

Flynn hopes that the addition of freshmanKoel Davia will add further motivation toHennis, not to mention providing Edinborowith a heavyweight for the future. Daviabecame just the second heavyweight in Ohiohistory to win three state championships aftercapturing the Division III title for BelmontUnion Local High School. He finished hissenior year with a 49-2 ledger, a school recordfor wins. He also holds the career wins recordwith a 167-27 record, along with season andcareer falls records (28 and 101, respectively). He was rated 99th onInterMat's Top 200Recruits.

However, Flynn cau-tions that Davia mayneed time to develop."He's a young kid. I don'tknow if he's been in aprogram that expectedthis much. The structureof our program will reallyhelp him. I think he has abright future."
