2004-05: The Year in Focus

Focus. Would that I could summon and banish this phantom visitor at will. For me, focus is never a sure bet. Sometimes it’s . . .

• present when I want it – a welcome visitor when I’m preparing a speech;

• absent when I want it – alas, while writing this piece and most everything I write;

• present when I don’t want it – a routine curse at 3 a.m.;

• blessedly absent when I don’t want it – as when I’m winding down with Bonnie at day’s end.

I’m getting better at manufacturing focus. I can strip away outside distractions by manipulating my environment. But the inside stuff usually remains noisy. Part of what makes focus elusive or accessible for all of us relates to our work. Bonnie Robinson makes her living by blocking out everything and focusing on her music. But

she can lock in on anything. She doesn’t really have an off switch on her laser : When she’s talking to someone, the rest of our family can be three feet away discussing what we’re getting her for Christmas without fear of being overheard. On the other hand, my work depends on my ability to see and think about many things simultaneously, which explains why I get a lot done and make

a lot of mistakes. I’m not really sure what multi-tasking means, but I’m sure I do it.

Although my lens is more often wide-angle than zoom, the object of my vision seldom changes. I see eager students gathered with caring scholars. Both are experiencing the challenges, the joys, the ambiguities, the pain, the fulfi llment, the complexities, and, ultimately, the durable satisfaction of honoring God, following Christ and serving our human community. I see a college bounding upward in strength and academic standing. I see a grand “to do” list that exhausts me. But I also see this annual report and my energy is renewed.

The impact of your generosity cannot be overstated. The good work being done at Whitworth comes directly from the tools you are putting into our hands. I thank you for a great 2004-05. Focus is of little value if it’s not followed by action. Through God’s grace and your kindness, our students go forth to put Whitworth’s mission into action. By the numbersWhitworth continued on a strong fi nancial trajectory in Fiscal Year 2005, with signifi cant growth in revenue, fi nancial giving and total assets that positions the college well for its ambitious fi ve-year strategic plan.

Operating revenue increased by 11.6 percent, to $51,348,525 – surpassing the $50 million mark for the fi rst time and supporting a comfortably balanced budget. Growth was fueled by a 94 percent increase in gift income, thanks to your generosity, and a total investment return of 9.3 percent despite a volatile market.

New contributions and good investment returns helped Whitworth’s endowment grow by 7.4 percent, to $65.9 million. Total assets increased by

• A remarkable 1,111 fi rst-time donors made gifts to the college in Fiscal Year 2005. New and continuing donors contributed $1,350,450 to The Whitworth Fund, which supports student scholarships, campus maintenance and other operational needs of the college. This is the second-highest annual total ever for The Whitworth Fund.

• With 430 new alumni donors, Whitworth’s alumni-giving rate reached its highest level in six years, at 25.4 percent. The alumni-participation rate refl ects the percentage of undergraduate degreed alumni who make a gift to Whitworth in any given year. This fi gure is an important measure of satisfaction that is carefully considered by outside ranking and granting organizations. With 400+ new graduates each year, more than 100 alumni must be added to the donor rolls to maintain or improve the alumni-giving rate.

• The President’s Club swelled to a record 593 members, all of whom made gifts of $1,000 or more to the college in FY2005.

Megan McGarry, ’05, developed an interest in medicine through her older brother, Alexander, who has Down Syndrome. Spending time with Alexander as he visited doctors during their childhood, McGarry discovered her desire to be not only a doctor, but a very good doctor. After a distinguished academic career at Whitworth, she’s in her fi rst year of medical school at the University of Washington.

“Some of the doctors we visited weren’t very good at all,” McGarry recalls. “Some were fi ne, and some were amazing.” The amazing ones sparked McGarry’s ambition to be a skilled and compassionate physician.

“In seventh grade I volunteered at a local hospital, and in high school I job-shadowed a pediatric cardiologist,” she says. “In college I became an EMT and worked as a medic on campus.” She also became a CPR instructor and interned with a family practitioner during vacations.

McGarry’s professors noticed her dedication as well as her intellect, and they did everything within their power to encourage and support her. “They not only cared about me academically,” she says; “they cared about how I was doing personally. Many of my professors became friends as well as mentors.”

Like most Whitworth students, McGarry received fi nancial aid that allowed her to complete her college education. She’s grateful for her Whitworth education, grateful for her chance to study at the prestigious medical school at U.W., and grateful to the older brother who inspired her to devote herself to becoming a top-tier physician.

In a clear case of doing well by doing good, a team of Whitworth international students earned second place in a regional business-plan competition in the spring by charting a winning strategy to help a Palestinian refugee rebuild a once-fl ourishing art career that was destroyed by violence in his native country.

Tobias Mayer, of Germany, and Suman Polepaka, of India – both students in Whitworth’s Master of International

Management Program – and artist Bassam Al Hayek formed one of three teams recognized in the community-based category of the business-plan competition. Their enterprise, Al Hayek Arts, seeks to establish its namesake’s reputation and portfolio as a world-class artist through a series of regional commissions; the business would then seek to create new distribution channels to fi ll a relatively vacant but potentially lucrative market for Christian fi ne art.

Kyle Usrey, dean of Whitworth’s School of Global Commerce & Management, thinks the international nature of the Whitworth team contributes to its success while highlighting the global marketplace.

“It is signifi cant that a Christian college in the U.S. brought together students from Germany and India to help a Palestinian artist-businessman regain his livelihood,” he says. “That is exactly what we are about at Whitworth and in the SGCM in terms of fulfi lling our mission by bringing together resources to provide opportunity, job creation, and creative expression for the region.”

Most students’ residence halls are their homes away from home while they attend Whitworth, but not for Jacob Rorem, ’05; Rorem all but lived on the main stage in Cowles Auditorium. As a freshman he won a major role in the fall theatre production, God’s Country; as a senior he portrayed Jesus in the spring musical, Godspell.

While at Whitworth, Rorem juggled multiple commitments with seeming ease and good humor. In addition to performing in theatre productions, he managed a rigorous academic course load, maintained an almost-perfect grade-point average, performed with Whitworth’s improvisational group,CoolWhip, served as a resident assistant, and took part in service-learning projects including On Stage! , a theatre program for people coping with mental illness.

“What is wonderful about Jacob is that he gives his very best to each of his endeavors, yet he remains personable and accessible to those around him,” says Associate Professor of Theatre Diana Trotter. “He’s a natural leader who has a gift of

drawing people together.”

In May, Rorem gave a fi nal, solo theatre performance on the main stage at Honors Forum, during which he also accepted the Distinguished Collegiate Achievement Award, the Alumni Ideals Award, and the Whitworth Theatre Department Award. After graduating he embarked on a summer mission trip to Guatemala. This fall he is serving as a teaching assistant with the Whitworth British Isles Study Program. For Jacob Rorem, all the world is now his stage.

Finding the role of his life

You’ve heard of Dr. J . – Hall of Famer and former NBA forward Julius Erving, whose M.D. is entirely imaginary but whose basketball prowess is legendary. Well, Whitworth’s Sarah Shogren, ’05, may become the medical real deal, and she’s already a basketball phenom. How does “Dr. S.” sound?

Shogren is planning to apply to a number of medical schools in both the U.S. and Europe while she’s in Germany this year, playing professional basketball for the Hofheim Huskies and living with a husband-and-wife physician team. She’ll apply for fall 2006 and will interview during her Christmas hoops break. “I may stay in Germany if I like it,” she says. “And if I don’t make it in to medical school this year, I may consider playing basketball there for one more year.”

Shogren, who also starred on the women’s golf team while at Whitworth, graduated magna cum laude with a double major in chemistry and biology. In basketball, she earned a spot on the 2004 Academic All-District VII Team and garnered a host of other postseason honors, averaging 18.7 points and 11.2 rebounds per game.

Like 95-plus percent of Whitworth students, Shogren received fi nancial aid that helped her to maximize her time at Whitworth. “I’ve

had a wonderful experience, both academically and athletically, at Whitworth,”

she says. And, she adds, “I want to thank donors for their generosity.” Thanks to that generosity, chances are good that in the not-too-distant future, Dr. S. will be hanging out her shingle.

Hardwick AssociatesThe Hardwick Associates Club is the namesake of Francis T. Hardwick, former dean of the college. Hardwick established his legacy at Whitworth as a beloved leader, scholar and mentor in the 1930s and ’40s. Many recognize his name from the Hardwick Union Building, which stood on campus from 1958 to 1995. Hardwick Associates gave between $500-$999 during the past fi scal year.
