NOVEMBER 2003 AFSCOLUMBIA-PACIFIC Without the stamp of approval from CSIET, AFS will not be able to place students in the majority of the schools we currently host in. The main issues that may affect your day- to-day operation (host family and volunteers) is the necessity for each family to receive a home visit and separate orientation; sign a new host family agreement; provide two non-related character references and abide by the guidelines outlined in the agreement. This is not to discourage families from hosting, but rather to ensure a good experience. That said, I'll remind you that Host Family Finding is an ongoing, year- round process. I encourage you all to "speak AFS." Introduce your students to classrooms and community organizations; they are ambassadors! Attend intercultural events of interest and make sure your friends and neighbors know you are changing the world person by person! Nominate a new family for next year. Recruit an Aunt Uncle family to be another influence in your student's life. If you would like to have a neighborhood information gathering, staff and volunteers are available with materials and expertise to assist. This is the time of year we are making school contacts, but neighborhood and church info nights can be a very effective way of spreading the word of AFS. For more information or for the directory of local AFS contacts, please see our website: www.afscolpac.org. This is a quote by one of our FLEX students “I think for every minus there is a plus and this will be a very helpful experience for me. I want to take the most I can from this trip. I would recommend that everyone do all they can here despite being tired or in a bad mood. Because if you relax here and do nothing you won’t have anything to remember after you go back home.” COLUMBIA PACIFIC HOSTING NEWS With the advent of Homeland Security and increased tensions in the world, it is more important than ever for us to review and abide by the guidelines of CSIET. Host Family Applications and Applicant paperwork contain the Guidelines we must operate with. If you don't have a copy, please ask your local volunteer or an Area Team Leader for a copy. It is with great sadness we report thedeath of one of our own AFSreturnees. Sarah Freni-Rothchild wasfound dead in September by hermother at her home. She died of aheart attack caused by a clot, morethan likely. Sarah was 26 years old.She was a "double-dipper" exchangeeand former staff in our AFS office. She spent a year abroad in High Schoolfrom Franciscan Earth Montessori toItaly in 1993 and 18+ CommunityService to South Africa in 1999.
