    PRECAUTIONS ONSUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINTSYSTEM

This Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) sec-tion contains important information concerningthe driver and passenger supplemental front airbags and pre-tensioner seat belts.

Supplemental front impact air bag system:This system can help cushion the impact force to

the face and chest of the driver and front passen-ger in certain frontal collisions.

The supplemental air bags are designed tosupplement the crash protection provided by

the driver and front passenger seat belts and not a substitute for them. Seat belts shoalways be correctly worn and the driver and frpassenger seated a suitable distance away f

the steering wheel and instrument panel. (SSeat belts later in this section for instructiand precautions on seat belt usage.)

The supplemental air bags operate owhen the ignition switch is in the ONSTART position.

After turning the ignition key to the position, the supplemental air bag warnlight illuminates. The supplemental air bwarning light will turn off after abouseconds if the system is operational.

WARNING The supplemental front air bags ordi-

narily will not inflate in the event of aside impact, rear impact, rollover, orlower severity frontal collision. Alwayswear your seat belts to help reduce therisk or severity of injury in various kindsof accidents.

The seat belts and the supplementalfront air bags are most effective whenyou are sitting well back and upright inthe seat. The front air bags inflate withgreat force. If you are unrestrained, leaning forward, sitting sideways or outof position in any way, you are atgreater risk of injury or death in a crash. You may also receive serious or fatalinjuries from the supplemental front airbag if you are up against it when it

inflates. Always sit back against theseatback and as far away as practicalfrom the steering wheel or instrumentpanel. Always use the seat belts.

The driver and front passenger seat bbuckles are equipped with sensors thdetectif the seat belts are fastened. Tair bag system monitors the severity

a collision and then inflates the air babased on belt usage. Failure to propewear seat belts can increase the riskseverity of injury in an accident.

Keep hands on the outside of the steeing wheel. Placing them inside tsteering wheel rim could increase trisk that they are injured when tsupplemental front air bag inflates.

    Supplemental front air bag system

The driver supplemental front air bag is located in

the center of the steering wheel. The passengersupplemental front air bag is mounted in thedashboard above the glove box.

These systems are designed to meet optiocertification requirements under U.S. regulatioThey are also permitted in Canada. The optiocertification allows the front air bags to be

signed to inflate somewhat less forcefully tpreviously. However, all of the informaticautions and warnings in this manual sapply and must be followed.

The supplemental front air bag system is signed to inflate in higher severity frontal cosions, although it may inflate if the forces in other type of collision are similar to those ohigher severity frontal impact. It may not inflatcertain frontal collisions. Vehicle damage (or lof it) is not always an indication of proper supmental front air bag system operation.

els, the supplemental air bag system has dualstage inflators for both the driver and passengerair bags. The system monitors information fromthe crash zone sensor, the diagnosis sensor unit

and seat belt buckle sensors that detect if theseat belts are fastened. Inflator operation isbased on the severity of a collision and whetherthe seat belts are being used. Only one front airbag may inflate in a crash, depending on thecrash severity and whether the front occupantsare belted or unbelted. This does not indicateimproper performance of the system. If you haveany questions about the performance of your airbag system, please contact your NISSANdealer.

When the supplemental front air bag inflates, afairly loud noise may be heard, followed by therelease of smoke. This smoke is not harmful anddoes not indicate a fire. Care should be taken tonot inhale it, as it may cause irritation and chok-ing. Those with a history of a breathing conditionshould get fresh air promptly.

Supplementalfront airbags, along with theuse ofseat belts, help to cushion the impact force onthe face and chest of the front occupants. Theycan help save lives and reduce serious injuries.

However, an inflating front air bag may causefacial abrasions or other injuries. Front air bagsdo not provide restraint to the lower body.

Seat belts should be correctly worn and thedriver and passenger seated upright as far aspractical away from the steering wheel or instru-ment panel. The supplemental front air bags in-

flate quickly in order to help protect the frontoccupants. Because of this, the force of the frontair bag inflating can increase the risk of injury ifthe occupant is too close to, or is against, thefront air bag module during inflation.

The front air bags deflate quickly after a collision.

The supplemental front air bags operateonly when the ignition switch is in the ONor START position.

After turning the ignition key to the ON

position, the supplemental air bag warninglight illuminates. The supplemental air bagwarning light will turn off after about 7seconds if the system is operational.

    WARNING

Do not place any objects on the steer-ing wheel pad or on the instrumentpanel. Also, do not place any objectsbetween any occupant and the steering

wheel or instrument panel. Such ob-jects may become dangerous projec-tiles and cause injury if the supplemen-tal front air bag inflates.

Right after inflation, several front bag system components will be hot. Dnot touch them; you may severely buyourself.

No unauthorized changes should made to any components or wiring the supplemental air bag system. Thisto prevent accidental inflation of tsupplemental air bag or damage to tsupplemental air bag system.

Do not make unauthorized changesyour vehicles electrical system, supension system or front end structuThis could affect proper operation the supplemental front air bag system

Tampering with the supplemental froair bag system may result in seriopersonal injury. Tampering includchanges to the steering wheel and tinstrument panel assembly by placimaterial over the steering wheel pand above the instrument panel or installing additional trim materaround the air bag system.

    WARNING

The pre-tensioner seat belt cannot bereused after activation. It must be re-placed together with the retractor andbuckle as a unit.

If the vehicle becomes involved in afrontal collision but the pre-tensioner isnot activated, be sure to have the pre-tensioner system checked and, if nec-essary, replaced by your NISSANdealer.

No unauthorized changes should bemade to any components or wiring ofthe pre-tensioner seat belt system. Thisis to prevent accidental activation ofthe pre-tensioner seat belt or damageto the pre-tensioner seat belt operation.Tampering with the pre-tensioner seatbelt system may result in serious per-sonal injury.

WARNINGAir bags and seat belts are designed towork as a unit. Do not switch the air bagOFF unless you meet federal governmentcriteria. Switching off the air bag may in-crease the risk of serious or fatal injuriesin a collision where the air bag would haveinflated.

In rare instances, some passengers are exposedto serious injury risks from inflating air bags, es-

pecially if not properly restrained. The U.S. andCanadian federal governments recognize otherlimited circumstances in which an air bag couldreduce safety. The passenger air bag ON/OFFswitchis, therefore, allowed in modelswithout fullrear seats. Because the overall benefits of airbags are great, in most situations air bags shouldnot be switched off unless special governmentcriteria exist.

The passengerair bag ON/OFF switch is located

in the center of the instrument panel, near theashtray. It can be used to turn the passengersupplemental air bag OFF.

The ON/OFF switch should ONLY be used toturn the passenger supplemental air bag OFFwhen the following government criteria exists:

Infants (less than 1 year old) in rear facingchild

restraints MUST be placed in the front pas-senger seat.

Children ages 1-12 years MUST be placed inthe front passenger seat.

The passenger has a medical condition which, according to a physician, causes the air bag topose a special risk and makes the potentialharm from theair baggreater than thepotentialharm from turning off the air bag.

Seat belts and child restraints should always beproperly used. See Precautions on seat beltusage and Child restraints later in this sectionfor details.

To turn the passenger supplemental air bag OFF,insert the ignition key in the passenger supple-mental air bag ON/OFF switch and turn theswitch clockwise to the OFF position. Then re-move the key. When the ignition is turned to theON or START position the passenger air bagOFF indicator light will illuminate to indicate the

airbag is OFF. To turn the passengersupplemen-tal air bag ON, insert the ignition key in thepassenger supplemental air bag ON/OFF switchand turn the switch counter clockwise to the ON

position. Then remove the key. When the ignitis turned to the ON or START position the psenger air bag OFF indicator light will illuminfor 7 seconds to indicate the system is work

properly and then go out to indicate that passenger supplemental air bag is ON.

    1. Do not operate the passenger supplemeair bag ON/OFF switch when the ignitioON.

    2. Fully turn the passenger supplementabag ON/OFFswitchto eitherthe ONor Oposition.

    3. Always remove the ignition key after usthe passenger supplemental air

should illuminate for 7 seconds after ignition is turned to the ON or START potion. If not, the vehicle should be taken tNISSAN dealer.

Items 2 and 3 above are intended to previmproper use of the ignition key.

Whenthe switchis turnedto the ONposition, passenger supplemental air bag is enabled a

The passenger supplemental air bag light, dis-playing OFF in the center of the instrument panel, monitors the position of the passenger supple-mental air bag ON/OFF switch. When the igni-tion key is in the ON or START position, the lightilluminates forabout 7 seconds andthen turns offif the air bag ON/OFF switch is in the ON posi-tion, or stays on if thepassenger supplementalair

bag ON/OFF switch is in the OFF position.

    WARNING

Do not switch the air bag OFF unlessyou meet the federal government crite-ria outlined previously. This vehicle (ex-

cept Crew Cab models) is equippedwith seat belts with a load limiter fea-ture. The seat belts are designed towork with the air bags to reduce the riskof injury in a collision. The seat belts aredesigned to release additional beltwebbing during some collisions to re-duce the concentration of force on theoccupants chest area. In a collisionwith the airbag turned OFF, the seatbelt may allow the occupant enough

forward movement to incur serious orfatal injuries.

Keep the passenger supplemental bag ON/OFF switch turned ON unlessrear-facing child restraint must be usin the front seat, if children ages 1-

must be placedin the front seat, or if tpassenger has a medical conditiowhich, according to a physician, causthe air bag to pose a special risk harm (the federal government criteriIf the switch is OFF, the air bag will ninflate in a collision as designed athe extra protection provided by the bag may be lost.

Be sure to turn the passenger suppmental air bag ON/OFF switch O

If any of the following system conditions occur, the supplemental air bag and pre-tensioner seatbelt systems need servicing:

The supplemental air bag warning light re-

mains on after approximately 7 seconds. The supplemental air bag warning light flashes

    intermittently.

The supplemental air bag warning light doesnot come on at all.

Under these conditions, the Supplemental Re-straint System (supplemental front air bag orpre-tensioner seat belt systems) may not operateproperly. It must be checked and repaired. Take

your vehicle to the nearest NISSAN dealer.

    WARNING

If the supplemental air bag warning lightis on, it could mean that the supplementalfront air bag or pre-tensioner seat beltsystems will not operate in an accident.

    Repair and replacement procedure

The supplemental front air bag and pre-tensionerseat belts are designed to inflate on a one-time-only basis. As a reminder, unless it is damaged, the supplemental air bag warning light remainsilluminated after inflation has occurred. Repair

and replacement of these supplemental air bagsystems should be done only by a NISSANdealer.

When maintenance work is required on the ve-

hicle, the supplemental front air bags, pre-tensioner seat belts and related parts should bepointed out to the person performing the mainte-nance. The ignition key should always be in theLOCK position when working under the hood orinside the vehicle.

    WARNING

Once a supplemental front air bag hasinflated, the air bag module will notfunction and must be replaced. Addi-tionally, if any of the supplemental frontair bags inflate, the activated pre-tensioner seat belts must also be re-placed. The air bag module and pre-tensioner seat belt system should bereplaced by a NISSAN dealer. The airbag module and pre-tensioner seat beltsystem cannot be repaired.

The supplemental front air bag systemand pre-tensioner seat belt system

should be inspected by a NISSANdealer if there is any damage to thefront end portion of the vehicle.

    WARNING

Be sure to turn the passenger supple-mental air bag ON/OFF switch OFFwhen using a rear facing child restraintin the front passenger seat in models soequipped. If it is not OFF, the air bagmay inflate in a collision. The force ofthe rapidly inflating air bag could causeserious injury or kill the child in thechild restraint. See Passenger supple-mental air bag ON/OFF switch andlight earlier in this section.

In Crew Cab models, never install a rearfacing child restraint in the front pas-senger seat. An inflating supplementalair bag could seriously injure or kill yourchild. A rear facing child restraint mustonly be used in the rear seat.

Do not install a child restraint in thejump seats (King Cab model). Theseseats are not suitable for child restraintinstallation.

Infants and children need special pro-tection. The vehicles seat belts may notfit them properly. The shoulder belt maycome too close to the face or neck. Thelap belt may not fit over their small hipbones. In an accident, an improperlyfitting seat belt could cause serious orfatal injury. Always use appropriatechild restraints.

All U.S. states and Canadian provinces or terri-tories require the use of approved child restraintsfor infants and small children. See Child Re-straints later in this section.

In addition, there are many types of child re-

straints available for larger children which shouldbe used for maximum protection.

NISSAN recommends that all pre-teensand children be restrained in the rear seat ifavailable (Crew Cab models). According toaccident statistics, children are safer whenproperly restrained in the rear seat than inthe front seat. This is especially importantbecause your vehicle has a supplementalrestraint system (Air bag system) for thefront passenger. See Supplemental re-straint system earlier in this section. Also, see Passenger air bag ON/OFF switch andlight earlier in this section.

    Infants and small children

NISSANrecommends that infants and small cdren be placedin child restraints that comply wFederal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards or C
