The Supplemental Restraint Systemconsists of air bag modules (located in the center of the steering wheel and in the instrument panel on thepassenger side), a diagnosis sensor unit, a crash zone sensor (4WD models), warning lamp, wiring harnessand spiral cable.The vehicle is equipped with a passenger air bag deactivation switch. Because no rear seat exists where arear-facing child restraint can be placed, the switch is designed to turn off the passenger air bag so that arear-facing child restraint can be used in the front passenger seat. The switch is located in the center of theinstrument panel, near the ashtray. When the switch is turned to the ON position, the passenger air bag isenabled and could inflate in a frontal collision. When the switch is turned to the OFF position, the passengerair bag is disabled and will not inflate in a frontal collision. A passenger air bag OFF indicator on the instru-ment panel lights up when the passenger air bag is switched OFF. The driver air bag always remains enabledand is not affected by the passenger air bag deactivation switch.Information necessary to service the system safely is included in the RS section of this Service Manual.WARNING:GTo avoid rendering the SRS inoperative, which could increase the risk of personal injury or death inthe event of a collision which would result in air bag inflation, all maintenance should be performedby an authorized NISSAN dealer.GImproper maintenance, including incorrect removal and installation of the SRS, can lead to personalinjury caused by unintentional activation of the system.GDo not use electrical test equipment on any circuit related to the SRS unless instructed to in thisService Manual. SRS wiring harnesses are covered with yellow insulation either just before the har-ness connectors or on the complete harness, for easy identification.GThe vehicle is equipped with a passenger air bag deactivation switch which can be operated by thecustomer. When the passenger air bag is switched OFF, the passenger air bag is disabled and willnot inflate in a frontal collision. When the passenger air bag is switched ON, the passenger air bagis enabled and could inflate in a frontal collision. After SRS maintenance or repair, make sure thepassengerairbagdeactivationswitchisinthesameposition(ONorOFF)aswhenthevehiclearrived for service.Precautions for Working with R-134aWARNING:GCFC-12 (R-12) refrigerant and R-134a refrigerant are not compatible. If the refrigerants are mixed,compressor malfunction is likely to occur, refer to Contaminated Refrigerant. To determine thepurity of HFC-134a (R-134a) in the vehicle and recovery tank, use Refrigerant Recovery/Recycling Recharging equipment (ACR4) (J-39500-NI) and Refrigerant Identifier.GUse only specified lubricant for the R-134a A/C system and R-134a components. If lubricant otherthan that specified is used, compressor malfunction is likely.G ThespecifiedR-134alubricantrapidlyabsorbsmoisturefromtheatmosphere. Thefollowinghandling precautions must be observed:a:When removing refrigerant components from a vehicle, immediately cap (seal) the componentto minimize the entry of moisture from the atmosphere.b: When installing refrigerant components to a vehicle, do not remove the caps (unseal) untiljust before connecting the components. Connect all refrigerant loop components as quicklyas possible to minimize the entry of moisture into the system.c:Onlyusethespecifiedlubricantfromasealedcontainer. Immediatelyreseal containersoflubricant. Without proper sealing, lubricant will become moisture saturated and should notbe used.d: Avoid breathing A/C refrigerant and lubricant vapor or mist. Exposure may irritate eyes, noseand throat. Remove R-134a from the A/C system using certified service equipment meetingrequirements of SAE J2210 (R-134a recycling equipment) or J2209 (R-134a recovery equip-ment).Ifaccidentalsystemdischargeoccurs,ventilateworkareabeforeresumingservice.Additional healthandsafetyinformationmaybeobtainedfromrefrigerant andlubricantmanufacturers.e:Do not allow lubricant to contact styrofoam parts. Damage may result.PRECAUTIONS AND PREPARATIONHA-2CONTAMINATED REFRIGERANTIf a refrigerant other than pure R-134a is identified in a vehicle, your options are:GExplain to the customer that environmental regulations prohibit the release of contaminated refrigerant intothe atmosphere.GExplain that recovery of the contaminated refrigerant could damage your service equipment and refriger-ant supply.GSuggest the customer return the vehicle to the location of previous service where the contamination mayhave occured.GIf you choose to perform the repair, recover the refrigerant using only dedicated equipment and contain-ers.Donotrecovercontaminatedrefrigerantintoyourexistingserviceequipment. If your facilitydoesnot havededicatedrecoveryequipment, youmaycontact alocal refrigerant product retailerforavailable service. This refrigerant must be disposed of in accordance with all federal and local regulations.In addition, replacement of all refrigerant system components on the vehicle is recommended.GIf the vehicle is within the warranty period, the air conditioner warranty is void. Please contact NissanCustomer Affairs for further assistance.General Refrigerant PrecautionsWARNING:GDo not release refrigerant into the air. Use approved recovery/recycling equipment to capture therefrigerant every time an air conditioner system is discharged. Always follow the manufacturersrecommendations for use of the recovery/recycling equipment.GAlways wear eye and hand protection (goggles and gloves) when working with any refrigerant orair conditioner system.GDo not store or heat refrigerant containers above 52C (125F).GDo not heat a refrigerant container with an open flame; if container warming is required, place thebottom of the container in a pail of warm water.GDo not intentionally drop, puncture, or incinerate refrigerant containers.GKeep refrigerant away from open flames: poisonous gas will be produced if refrigerant burns.GRefrigerant will displace oxygen, therefore be certain to work in well ventilated areas to preventsuffocation.GDo not pressure test or leak test HFC-134a (R-134a) service equipment and/or vehicle air condi-tioning systems with compressed air during repair. Some mixtures of air and R-134a have beenshowntobecombustibleatelevatedpressures.Thesemixtures,ifignited,maycauseinjuryorproperty damage. Additional health and safety information may be obtained from refrigerant manu-facturers.GIMAEMLCECFECLMTATTFPDFARABRSTRSBTHAELIDXPRECAUTIONS AND PREPARATIONPrecautions for Working with R-134a (Contd)HA-3Precautions for Refrigerant ConnectionFEATURES OF NEW TYPE REFRIGERANT CONNECTIONA new type refrigerant connection has been introduced to all refrigerant lines except the following location:G Expansion valve to cooling unit.G The O-ring is relocated in a groove for proper installation. This eliminates the chance of the O-ring beingcaught in, or damaged by, the mating part. The sealing direction of the O-ring is now set vertically in rela-tion to the contacting surface of the mating part to improve sealing characteristics.G The reaction force of the O-ring will not occur in the direction that causes the joint to pull out, therebyfacilitating piping connections.AHA022APRECAUTIONS AND PREPARATIONHA-4O-RING AND REFRIGERANT CONNECTIONAHA473ACAUTION:Refrigerant connections in some systems use different O-ring configurations. Then gradually loosen the discharge side hose fitting and removeit.CAUTION:When replacing or cleaning refrigerant cycle components, observe the following.GDo not leave compressor on its side or upside down for more than 10 minutes. Compressor lubri-cant will enter low pressure chamber.GWhen connecting tubes, always use a torque wrench and a back-up wrench.GAfter disconnecting tubes, plug all openings immediately to prevent entry of dirt and moisture.GWhen installing an air conditioner unit in the vehicle, connect the pipes as the final stage of theoperation. Do not remove seal caps from pipes and other components until just before connec-tion.GAllow components stored in cool areas to warm to working area temperature before removing sealcaps. This prevents condensation from forming inside A/C components.GThoroughly remove moisture from the refrigeration system before charging the refrigerant.GAlways replace used O-rings.GWhen connecting tube, apply lubricant to portions shown in illustration. Be careful not to applylubricant to threaded portion.Name: Nissan A/C System Lubricant Type RPart No.: KLH00-PAGR0GO-ring must be closely attached to inflated portion of tube.GAfter inserting tube into union until O-ring is no longer visible, tighten nut to specified torque.GAfterconnectingline, conductleaktestandmakesurethatthereisnoleakage. Whenthegasleaking point is found, disconnect that line and replace the O-ring. Then tighten connections of sealseat to the specified torque.AHA025APRECAUTIONS AND PREPARATIONPrecautions for Refrigerant Connection(Contd)HA-6Precautions for Servicing CompressorG Plug all openings to prevent moisture and foreign matter from entering.G Do not keep the compressor in the upside down position or laid on its side for more than 10 min-utes.G Whenreplacingorrepairingcompressor,besuretoremovelubricantfromthecompressorandcheck the lubricant quantity extracted.G Whenreplacingor repairingcompressor, followlubricant checkingandadjustingprocedureexactly. Refer to Compressor Lubricant Quantity, SERVICE PROCEDURES, HA-56.G Keep friction surfaces between clutch and pulley clean. If the surface is contaminated with oil, wipeit off by using a clean waste cloth moistened with thinner.G Aftercompressorserviceoperation,turnthecompressorshaftbyhandmorethanfiveturnsinboth directions. This will equally distribute lubricant inside the compressor. After the compressoris installed, let the engine idle and operate the compressor for one hour.G After replacing the compressor magnet clutch, apply voltage to the new one and check for normaloperation.GIMAEMLCECFECLMTATTFPDFARABRSTRSBTHAELIDXPRECAUTIONS AND PREPARATIONHA-7R-134a Service Tools and EquipmentNever mix R-134a refrigerant and/or its specified lubricant with CFC-12 (R-12) refrigerant and/or its lubricant.Separate and non-interchangeable service equipment must be used for each type of refrigerant/lubricant.Refrigerant container fittings, service hose fittings, and service equipment fittings (equipment which handlesrefrigerant and/or lubricant) are different between CFC-12 (R-12) and R-134a. Thevent side of the vacuum pump is exposed to atmospheric pressure.Therefore, if the pump is switched off after evacuation the lubricat-ing oil may migrate into the hose. To prevent this, isolate the pumpfrom the hose after evacuation (vacuuming).This migration is avoided by placing a manual shut-off valve nearthe hose-to-pump connection, as follows:G Usually vacuum pumps have a manual isolator valve as partof the pump. Close this valve to isolate the service hose fromthe pump.G For pumps without an isolator valve, use a hose equipped witha manual shut-off valve near the pump end. Close the valve toisolate the hose from the pump.G If thehosehasanautomaticshut-off valve, disconnect thehose from the pump. As long as the hose is connected, thevalve is open and lubricating oil may migrate.Someone-wayvalvesopenwhenvacuumisappliedandcloseunder a no vacuum condition. Such valves may restrict the pumpsability to pull a deep vacuum and are not recommended.SHA533DMANIFOLD GAUGE SETBe sure the gauge set has 1/2-16 ACME threaded connections forservice hoses. Press Shift/Reset and Enter at the same time.2. Press 8787. A1 will be displayed.3. Remove all weight from the scale.4. Press 0, then press Enter. 0.00 will be displayed andchange to A2.5. Place a known weight (dumbbell or similar weight), between 10and 19 lbs., on the center of the weight scale.6. Enter theknownweight using4digits. (Example10lbs=10.00, 10.5 lbs = 10.50)7. Press Enter the display returns to the vacuum mode.8. Press Shift/Reset and Enter at the same time.9. Press 6 the known weight on the scale is displayed.10. Remove the known weight from the scale. 0.00 will be dis-played.11. Press Shift/Reset to return the ACR4 to the program mode.CHARGING CYLINDERUsing a charging cylinder is not recommended. Refrigerant may bevented into the air through the cylinders top valve when filling thecylinder.PRECAUTIONS AND PREPARATIONPrecautions for Service Equipment (Contd)HA-12Refrigeration CycleREFRIGERANT FLOWThe refrigerant flow is in the standard pattern. Refrigerant flows through the compressor, condenser, liquidtank, evaporator, and back to the compressor.The refrigerant evaporation through the evaporator coilis controlled by an externally equalized expansionvalve, located inside the evaporator case.FREEZE PROTECTIONThe compressor cycles on and off to maintain the evaporator temperature within a specified range. When theevaporator coil temperature falls below a specified point, the thermo control amplifier interrupts the compres-sor operation. When the evaporator coil temperature rises above the specification, the thermo control ampli-fier allows compressor operation.REFRIGERANT SYSTEM PROTECTIONTriple-pressure switchThe refrigerant system is protected against excessively high or low pressure. The protection is effected by thetriple-pressure switch located on the liquid tank. If the pressure rises or falls out of specifications, the switchopens to interrupt the compressor operation.Pressure relief valveThe refrigerant system is protected by a pressure relief valve. The valve is located on the end of the flexiblehigh pressure hose near the compressor. When refrigerant system pressure increases abnormally [over 3,727kPa (38 kg/cm2, 540 psi)], the relief valves port opens. The valve then releases refrigerant into the atmo-sphere.AHA399AGIMAEMLCECFECLMTATTFPDFARABRSTRSBTHAELIDXDESCRIPTIONHA-13Control OperationAHA109AFAN CONTROL LEVERThis lever turns the fan ON and OFF, and controls fan speed.MODE CONTROL SWITCHThis switch controls the outlet air flow.TEMPERATURE CONTROL SWITCHThis switch allows adjustment of the temperature of the outlet air.RECIRCULATION (REC) CONTROL LEVERFRESH position:Outside air is drawn into the passenger compartment.Recirculation REC position:Interior air is recirculated inside the vehicle.AIR CONDITIONER SWITCHThe air conditioner switch controls the A/C system. When the switch is depressed with the fan ON, the com-pressor will turn ON.
