Principal’s Reflection

20 February, 2019

Week 4, Term 1

Dear Families,

Over the weekend a number of our students at Holy Spirit School began their preparation for the

Sacrament of Reconciliation - Leyla McLaughlin, Charlotte Bush, Lachlan Doherty, Anastasia Thomas,

Leonardo Prandi and Matthea Regulano. The Parish community blessed them and their parents and we

wish them all the best as they continue in their journey of faith.

On Tuesday, as a school we took time remember and reflect on the 77th Anniversary of the Bombing of Darwin. The School

Captains, Vice Captains and myself attended the Service at Darwin Cenotaph and laid a wreath, to honour the fallen on behalf of the

Holy Spirit School Community.

Our school Defence Families gathering last Friday was a lot of fun. Our 37 Defence family students and many of their parents enjoyed

an art and craft, and games afternoon in the school library. A big thank you to Mrs. Crimmings, our School Defence Student Transition

Aide for the work she does in organising these events and all that she does for our Defence families.

The Holy Spirit School Board meets each month during the school term. The 2019 Holy Spirit School Board is made up of the

following members: President –Fr. David Tremble, Chairperson: Johanna Stieber, Executive Officer: Simon Duffy, Teacher

Representative: Emma McDonald, , Finance Officer: LeeMian Chong, Community of Learners Representative: Sharon Floyd and board

members, Sean O’Connor and Bel Sheridan. I would like to thank the board for the fantastic work that they do in guiding and assisting

our Holy Spirit school community. If you are interested in joining our school board please contact our front office.

We have had a few concerns with toys at school this week. I take this opportunity to remind families that children’s toys are not

allowed at school. If they are bringing them in for a classroom activity, they need to be handed to the

teacher on arrival and collected at the end of the day. Thanks for your co-operation with this.

Our next big school social event is the Harmony Day Dinner held on Friday 22nd March from 5:30pm –

7:30pm at school. This event is a wonderful opportunity for families to gather and celebrate our cultural

INTRODUCING… Veronica Niland

I grew up on a beef cattle farm at Gilletts Ridge which is about

25km north of Grafton in NSW. I graduated with a Bachelor of

Education from the University of New England (Armidale

NSW) in March 2005 and moved to the NT a month later. I

have worked in NT Catholic Education ever since.

I enjoy living in Humpty Doo and experiencing what the

outdoors has to offer. I love to throw the ball for my dog

Cheeky, go camping, fishing and crabbing on weekends. During

the holidays I look forward to different adventures such as snow

skiing; but I especially love scuba diving. I have been lucky

enough to scuba dive in Philippines, Fiji, Thailand, Cook

Islands and Bali!

I am so excited to be welcomed into the wonderful Holy Spirit

community and I’m thoroughly looking forward to the year

ahead.

CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to the Ullas family who celebrated the

sacraments of baptism, communion and confirmation in India

over the holidays. May the Holy Spirit guide you all on your

journey of faith.

LOOKING THROUGH THE WINDOW Year 5/6, Rm. 10 with Ms. Sinéad

This week, Room 10 is learning about narrative writing in

Literacy. Our main focus is being able to write a Narrative using

the correct structure.

This term in Science we are learning about Adaptations and

Genetic Mutations.

Our class theme for the year is Tropical with our reading groups

using tropical names like Watermelons, Toucans, Flamingos

and Pineapples.

At the start of the year we discussed as a class what our ideas of

a good teacher, students and classroom would be and our

teacher, Ms Sinead drew up a classroom contract which we have

all agreed to and signed.

We have been doing lots of fun activities like painting, building

blocks, sorting colours with tweezers and reading books with

our buddy class Community of Learners, it’s great to be able to

visit.

We have also made some goals about our learning and have our

very own, Learning Journals to keep track of our goals and help

us keep a growth mindset.

INTRODUCING... Itabo Boitshwarelo

My name is Itabo Boitshwarelo, and I am originally from

Botswana. I qualified as a primary school teacher in 2002

overseas and soon after started my teaching career, teaching

mostly lower classes (2003-2012) in Botswana public primary

schools.

In April 2012 my family and I moved to Darwin and it has

become our “home away from home” with its warm and

welcoming people. In 2013, I joined the Holy Spirit

Community of Learners working as an early childhood

educator. I have since attained qualifications in children

services, and early childhood education and care. Currently I

am working towards my Bachelor of Education (Early

Childhood Teaching) with Charles Darwin University.

This year I am privileged to work at Holy Spirit Primary School

as an ISA, and so far, it has been a wonderful and fulfilling

experience. I believe this current role will broaden my skill set

in working with a diversity of children. I am thankful for all the

professional opportunities that I have been afforded at Holy

Spirit and I hope I can make some valuable contribution.

GET INVOLVED IN THE SCHOOL BANKING PROGRAMME

Holy Spirit is excited to offer the Commonwealth Bank School

Banking programme to all students.

School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young

Australians to learn about money and develop good savings

habits. Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver

account through School Banking earn Dollarmites tokens, which

they can save up and redeem for exciting rewards.

The rewards available during 2019 are:

Twister Power Handball

Secret Scratch Pad

Sparkle Glitter Pens

Glow Light

Mighty Boom Handball

Heat Reactor Pencils

Slushie Maker Cup

Zoom Flying Disc

School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our

school receives a Regular Savers Contribution of $5 for every 10

deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution

which is based on the number of students who made at least one

School Banking deposit in the prior year.

Getting involved in School Banking is easy!

All you need to get involved in the School Banking programme

is a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. You can open

an account for your child in one of two ways:

Online

Visit www.commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the

link to open a Youthsaver account.

In branch

Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for

yourself and your child, like a driver’s licence and birth

certificate.

If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver

account they can start banking straight away. They just need to

bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using

their Dollarmites deposit wallet.

School Banking day is FRIDAY. Each week you need to

Give your school banking to the front office.

If you would like to know more about School Banking, please

ask for a 2018 School Banking programme information pack
