Excellent results for Eisenwarenmesse

Again this year, according to tradition, theMarch/April issue announces the upcomingexhibition that will animate next May.And as usual in even-numbered years, thisannouncement has a strong impact on us,so strong that the Xylon International issueyou are leafing through is a sort of monographdedicated to our Xylexpo, scheduled next May 24 to 28.

Forgive us for saying “our”, but as many ofour readers know, this magazine and thatexhibition grow on the same tree, i.e. Ceprasrl Unipersonale, the operational branch ofAcimall, the association of Italian wood te-chnology manufacturers.

We repeat this for professional ethics, butalso with the pride we take in announcing amajor event for our work: an issue dedicatedto one of the most important events in the bigcircus of industry exhibitions, several tens ofevents ranging from timber to finished product, from technology to supplies.

Not only: for a publication that is addressedto the entire world and closely monitors theglobal offer of technology, having the oppor-tunity to play at home every 24 months is anoccasion not to be missed, and we have toprepare the best we can!

So, in this issue of Xylon International, youwill find an accurate review of the exhibition, its leading actors, companies and their pro-ducts, current topics, and great chances thatnew important decisions are made for the fu-ture. We can say that, never like this year, those who are able and willing to read betweenthe lines will have a lot to think about, especiallyreading what we have written on page 6 and7, the report of many speeches at the inter-national press conference introducing Xylexpo2016.

Plenty of pages about what is going to bethe next Xylexpo, but there is much more:Salone del Mobile.Milano, for instance, where Acimall will attend for the first timewith its own stand (Hall 18, Stand D10).

And much more all around: as we love tosay, Xylon International is a magazine to beread...(l.r.)

FAIRSSuccessful strategies for wood and furniture

NEWS

XYLON INTERNATIONAL 3 March-Aprily 2016

The twin trade fair event comprising Holz-Handw-erk and Fensterbau Frontale has reconfirmed itsleading position in the participating industries, with a record number of visitors in 2016: theevent held between 16 and 19 March brought110,581 experts from the wood and window in-dustries to Nuremberg, compared to 108,967 onthe previous occasion in 2014. The second dayof the event alone saw a record 38,568 visitorsflow through the halls – a figure never previouslyachieved by the Exhibition Centre Nuremberg ina single day. The venue, fully booked for theevent, hosted a total of 1,296 exhibitors, abouttwo-thirds of them from outside Germany, pre-senting new developments and innovations fromthe wood processing industry and the fields ofwindow, door and facade construction.

796 exhibitors from 37 countries at FensterbauFrontale, 500 exhibitors from 19 countries at Holz-Handwerk. Current industry topics were carefullyprepared to provide a wealth of information in thesupporting programme: from promoting newtalents in craft enterprises to architectural questionsin the Architecture-Window-Façade Forum, andspecial, subject-specific shows offered a broadrange of choices for different target groups. AfterGermany, the countries with the greatest numberof exhibitors were Italy, Poland and Turkey. Onein three of the visitors in 2016 came from outsideGermany, representing international growth in theorder of more than 13 percent. Next combinedFensterbau Frontale and Holz-Handwerk tradefair will be held at the Exhibition Centre Nurembergon 21-24 March 2018. ■

The 2016 edition of “Klimahouse” at Fiera Bolzano re-corded strong interest for sustainability in the areas ofconstruction and plants and reaffirmed the centralposition of South Tyrol in the field of eco-efficient researchand innovation. The exhibition was attended by 37,500visitors, from 28 to 31 January, meeting 465 exhibitors, while over 70 companies were put on a waiting list. Keytopics included the renovation and energy efficiency ofexisting buildings, with the awareness that, behind thesimple certification of eco-efficiency performance, thereis also increasing commitment to the research on thevisual impact and architectural quality of artifacts.Attention on this topic was drawn by CasaClima’s inter-national congress dedicated to “Design and function”,which gathered 800 participants in two days andinvolved professionals and university teachers. Accordingto tradition, “Klimahouse” 2016 attracted architects, de-signers, industry representatives, institutions and anexpanding audience of end users interested in renovatingand building houses with low energy consumption andenvironmental impact. Exhibitors reaffirmed their com-mitment to the research and development of innovativesolutions for constructions and installations. Now, the Bozen-based event on sustainability in con-structions looks forward to the next steps, with twomajor news. The first one is the debut of “KlimahouseChina”, concurrently with “ISH China” in Beijing from 30May to June 1. In Italy, after Rome, Bastia Umbra, Bari,Florence and Como, “Klimahouse” is going to Sicily, promoting an expo-conference next 28-29 October2016 in Radicepura. ■

FAIRSEisenwarenmesse: excellent results!

The 2016 event of Eisenwarenmesse - InternationalHardware Fair, held last March 6 to 8 in Cologne, closedwith a largely positive result: over 44,000 trade visitorsfrom 124 countries met 2,670 exhibitors from 55 nationson the Rhine river banks. Great success also for Italiancompanies, who took the opportunity of crowded hallsin Cologne to show the creativity and know-how of theircreations. As many as 188 exhibitors represented “madein Italy”, forty of them gathered in four collective pavilionsorganized by Koelnmesse Italia. The exhibition exceededexpectations in terms of the quality of products and ser-vices on display, attendance and effectiveness of thetrade fair concept. The concept worked well, as witnessedby the results of the exhibitor survey: 67 percent of inter-viewed companies expressed satisfaction or great sati-sfaction for visitor profiles, while 75 percent stated thatoverall they were very satisfied or satisfied as far asachieving the goals of their visit was concerned. Muchappreciation was also expressed for the new “face” ofthe event, lasting three days only, with a significantly in-creased flow of visitors on Monday and Tuesday. Resultsprove that the challenge has been won: the 144,000-square-meter venue hosted a modern event with arational layout, designed to provide visitors and exhibitorswith valuable business opportunities while making themost of the available time.

Plus 44.4 percent professional visitors versus2014, with a total attendance of 28,000. Amongthese, 8.1 percent from abroad, from 72 countries.Valencia (Spain) hosted a successful edition, number 37, of Fimma Maderalia, the event thatcombines the international exhibition of machineryand tools for furniture production, joinery andinterior decorations, and the exhibition for thewood and furniture industry. The positive result was ensured by the synergygenerated by the initiative “Let’s see in Valencia”,and most of all the decision to share marketingand sales channels with the new exhibition area“Spazio Cucina” by “Cevisama”, the internationalexhibition of the ceramic industry. The economic“punch” from the Valencia exhibitions confirmsthat the domestic market in Spain is recovering,

driven by anew appro-ach to thedesign andproductionof finished products, an approach that has cha-racterized all rooms from home (kitchen first) towork. Looking at exhibitors, Fimma Maderalia 2016 wasattended by a total of 614 companies, 35 percentmore than in 2014, and double exhibition area.Enthusiasm and satisfaction are strong: 91 percentof interviewed companies reported a positive ex-perience at the 2016 edition, declaring that theValencia exhibition has been up to or even beyondtheir expectations. ■

The ordersbook has ex-tended to 2.8months of en-sured produc-tion (versus2.5 months atthe end of

2014), with a one percent variation of pricessince January 1st (1.3 percent in 2014). According to the quality survey, 42 percent ofthe interviewed companies indicate a positiveproduction trend, 47 percent stable and 11 percentdecreasing. Employment is stable accordingto 69 percent of the sample, increasing for 5percent and decreasing for 26 percent. Available stocks are stationary according to 74percent, decreasing according to the remaining26 percent. The forecast survey helps imaginethe future. The interviewed businessmen are moreoptimistic about the next period, with 42 percentexpecting a further expansion of foreign demand,53 percent a stable trend and 5 percent only adecrease. The balance is plus 37, up from 27 points recordedby the Confindustria-member association at theend of 2014.More caution on the domestic market: accordingto 16 percent of the sample, orders from Italiancompanies are going to decrease, while 63percent expect a stable trend and 21 percentfurther growth in the short term. The balance is plus 5, versus 16 in the samesurvey in February 2015. ■

ACIMALL2015 ends with a largely positive quarter

The year 2015will not be re-membered asa season of re-cords, but forthe Italian wo-odworking te-chnology indu-stry the past twelve months were undoubtedlybetter than expected. The trends based on the positive figures of thepreliminary balance published by the associationin mid-December (for convenience, see the tableat the end of this press release) will probably berevised upwards, although it should be noticedthat most orders coming in the fourth quarter willgenerate revenues in 2016.As a matter of fact, orders in the final quarter2015 cast a new light onto the industry. On the whole, the trend survey by Acimall’s Stu-dies Office on a panel of representative companiesindicates 23.3 percent growth compared to thesame period in 2014. There was a clear exploit on the domestic market, with orders up by one third (29.6 percent), whileforeign markets recorded slower expansion at 17percent.Besides year-on-year, figures are really positivealso quarter-on-quarter, as growth from the previousquarter (July-September 2015) amounted to 30percent, or 7 percent with seasonal adjustment,i.e. considering the number of working days. This figure is significant because it indicates aconsolidation of the growth trend that hasbeen going on since early 2014.

From a small-scale object to a large sitting ma-sterpiece of solid wood, riding the wave ofemotions that characterize an artistic gesture andare shaped by sophisticated numerical controltechnology. This is the origin of “Noce”, a stool created bydesigner Vito Nesta for company Riva 1920 inCantù. “Collaboration with Riva 1920 beganwhen I met Maurizio Riva”, says Vito Nesta,Apulian of origin and Milanese for adoption, anInterior Design graduate in Florence and a multi-faceted figure working as designer, art director, interior designer and craftsman. Besides Riva1920, he collaborates with other companies in-cluding Texturae, Roche Bobois, Sforzin, Karpeta,Bagutta and Cadriano: from glass to textiles, upto wood. The stool, made of solid cedar woodmeasuring 69 centimeters in length by 42 in widthand 39 in height, belongs to a collection thatMaurizio Riva has been building piece by piecein recent years, collaborating with outstandingrepresentatives of Italian and international designwho offered their own interpretation of the rela-tionship between business know-how and creativefreedom. ■

by exports, while 67 percent of them havemade substantial investments in innovating ma-chinery, equipment and software; research anddevelopment, especially within the companiesthemselves, and in the design of new products”.Such effort has been supported by institutions: incollaboration with Ice-Italian Trade Agency, themade-in-Italy 2016 promotion plan is supportedby more investments aimed at increasing thenumber of qualified foreign visitors and activatethe best contacts for B2B meetings.Strengthening the foothold on growing markets isa top priority. In a landscape where Italian furnitureis getting stronger in traditional European markets,Germany and France first, the most promisingdestinations are the United States and China.Eyes are also turned to Iran, where new policiesfor open trade are creating significant opportunitiesfor made in Italy export. It is not mere chancethat, in Miami (Florida), at the “Design Miami/Ar-tBasel” event last January, Salone del Mobile.Milanopresented a review of the top-notch productionof Italian design, while China is hosting the first“Salone del Mobile.Shanghai” from 19 to 21 No-vember 2016: based on previous experience inRussia, the exhibition will cover a four thousandsquare meter area, with a program including“Master Classes”, dedicated meetings about thekey topics of architecture and design, presentedby leading Italian representatives of the designbusiness, and “SaloneSatellite” open to youngdesigners under 35. The Chinese market, ap-proached by the furniture business in recentyears also through a partnership involving Feder-legnoArredo Eventi and BolognaFiere, is ackno-wledging the role of Italy as top furniture partner, with 19 percent growth of Italian export in theJanuary-September 2015 period compared tothe same timeframe of 2014, and 270 million euroestimates by the end of the year, as also indicatedby the latest figures of Centro Studi Federlegno-Arredo Eventi based on Istat data. The outlook isalso optimistic, with a 40 percent increase within2019. The market share is 15 percent on totalChinese import (1,537 million euro). Looking atproduct categories, the export ranking is headedby upholstered furniture (plus 33 percent), bedroom(plus 56 percent) and decorative lighting (plus15 percent), with a strong expansion trend for kit-chen sets (plus 39 percent). On the whole, Italiancompanies in the furniture industry hold leadingpositions in export to China in 70 percent of furni-shing products. Made-in-Italy furniture is theworld’s third largest industry by total annual export(13.6 billion euro) and has the best active tradebalance, second to China only, with 10.3 billioneuro. Competitiveness goes hand in hand withinnovation, as witnessed by 22,741 drawings andmodels (more than Spain, France, Great Britainand Sweden all together) registered in the databaseof Ohim (EU Office for Harmonization in theInternal Market).

For the first time ever, technology enters the Fur-niture Show in Milan. Well, that’s not exactly true:there will be no machine, no chips flying around, but nevertheless it’s going to be a great opportunityto reaffirm the role of “made in Italy” woodworkingtechnology. It’s exciting to be at Salone del mo-bile.Milano, no doubt. And that’s probably thebest way to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary ofthe official foundation of Acimall, the associationof Italian woodworking machinery and accessorymanufacturers. In hall 18, stand D10, in the area dedicated tomodern furniture and decorations, there will beroom to talk about the association and to discussseveral topics, as well as to declare some “goodintentions”. Behind this participation there are se-veral reasons, several topics that deserve to bementioned, at least. First of all, a strong, clearsignal announcing a new season of open colla-boration with FederlegnoArredo. You can readabout it in the article on page 6 in this issue ofXylon International, reporting from the press con-ference featuring a panel of keynote speakers, including FederlegnoArredo and Salone del mo-bile.Milano managing director Giovanni De Pontiand Acimall president Lorenzo Primultini, whodid not miss the opportunity to announce the“approaching”, and most of all the determinationto work together in different areas, exhibitions in-cluded. “All this depends on us” is the messagelaunched by the Acimall stand at the Salone. It's an unobtrusive, elegant, institutional stand, set up in collaboration with Ice, the Italian agency

for the international promotion and globalizationof Italian companies, which actively supports theinitiative. The message will be effectively conveyedby visuals: a quick look around and the videosdisplayed at the Acimall stand will illustrate theimportance of leading-edge technology to makefurniture, the most beautiful ones, affordable toeverybody. The Acimall stand will also send out other messa-ges, including an invitation to industry operatorsattending the Salone to come back to FieraMila-no-Rho next May 24 to 28, to visit the 25th editionof Xylexpo, the biennial wood technology exhibitionwe deal with in this issue. TWe will display thetools we used fifty, one hundred years ago. Thelineup will start from ancient equipment offeredby the Tino Sana Foundation from Almenno SanBartolomeo (Bergamo), a museum that the woodand furniture community should know better. Atthe opposite end, pictures and videos will showwhat technology means today for wood andwood-based materials, the level of sophistication, expertise and innovation that Acimall membercompanies can offer at present. And there will bemuch more, but we would really like you to comeand see for yourself! So, see you in Milan, atSalone del Mobile.Milano, from 12 to 17 April.Mark your agenda: Hall 18, stand D10!

This was the key message of several speechesdelivered at the press conference introducing thenext Xylexpo, the biennial international exhibitionof woodworking technology and furniture industrysupplies to be held from 24 to 28 May at the Fie-raMilano-Rho expo center. New initiatives includeAcimall’s participation in the Salone del Mobile.Mi-lano 2016 to celebrate the association’s 50th an-niversary and the 25th edition of the exhibition, but most of all to open a dialog with a new au-dience, especially the world of design and crea-tivity.

“For the second time, the event will show ourown and our partners' determination to look

ahead, with the awareness that we can achievenew goals and win tough challenges only if westand together”. So said Lorenzo Primultini,Acimall president, as he closed the second editionof XIPC-Xylexpo International Press Confer-ence, hosted in the fascinating setting of the Uni-Credit Pavilion in Milan last February 12.This determination to “team up” has also beenexpressed by other reputable speakers: AndreaMattiello of Ice and Corrado Peraboni andPaolo Borgio, respectively managing directorand "guest exhibition" manager of FieraMilano, the general manager of FederlegnoArredo andSalone del Mobile.Milano Giovanni De Ponti,Acimall’s director Dario Corbetta and president

Lorenzo Primultini, the event “testimonial” Mau-rizio Riva, owner of Riva1920 together with hisbrother Davide.Clear messages, powerful wordsthat certainly achieved the goal of involvingindustry media representatives coming to Milanfrom twenty countries, projecting them into thefuture of the Milan biennial exhibition, which cele-brates its 25th anniversary this year.

ANDREA MATTIELLOThe anniversary was the starting point for thespeech by Andrea Mattiello of Ice, the foreigntrade promotion and globalization agency forItalian companies, who reminded the longstandingcollaboration between the agency and Italian

wood technology manufacturers. As a result ofsuch partnership, Xylexpo has been listed amongthe thirty world-class exhibitions of the Italiantrade fair calendar, an additional driver for aneven stronger joint action abroad. As Mattiellosaid, this action has translated into a number ofinitiatives, including booths and press meetingsat the leading industry exhibitions, combined witha campaign in global industry magazines andweb portals. And the promotion and communicationcampaign on the Italian market is starting soon“...for one of the most significant woodworkingtechnology platforms on a global scale”, con-cluded Mattiello, illustrating the initiatives in thenext months and the rich incoming program forforeign delegations invited to Milan in May.

CORRADO PERABONI AND PAOLO BORGIOPaolo Borgio, who was appointed a few weeksago to manage the 60-plus “guest exhibitions” ofFieraMilano, opened his speech by wishing happybirthday to Xylexpo for its 25th edition, “…a longtime when we have always been working sideby side, with a practical approach, to bring ex-hibitors and visitors to Milan”, he said.

“All-round collaboration has helped us overcomethese tough years, a successful and deservedachievement for an exhibition with a big shareof foreign visitors and a showcase of one ofItaly's leading segments within the instrumentalgoods industry”.The press conference also hosted a speech byCorrado Peraboni, managing director of Fiera-Milano. “I wanted to be here to tell about thelong and close relationship between FieraMilanoand Xylexpo, an exhibition we have always be-lieved in for the values it expresses and the ex-cellent standards of the industry it representsin Italy and worldwide. FieraMilano must beand wants to be up to the international standingof such events, providing services that are upto the commitment of organizers and exhibitors. We are confident that, together, we can doeven better”.

GIOVANNI DE PONTIThe stage was then taken by Giovanni De Ponti, general manager of FederlegnoArredo and Salonedel Mobile.Milano. “The fiftieth anniversary ofAcimall – he said – is a great achievement andmust be celebrated properly. Italian technologyhas given a great contribution to the success ofItalian furniture; it’s not mere chance that thefurniture districts are located in the same areaswhere many woodworking machinery and plantmanufacturers are based. We have been walkingtogether for a long time and with mutual satis-faction, but now the time has come to take newsteps together, going beyond the basic col-laboration between the two universes we repre-sent and drawing inspiration from our long-standing cooperation in the trade fair business– think about the combination of Xylexpo andSasmil, the exhibition of furniture componentsand supplies – and the success we haveachieved together for decades”.“We are avail-able, open, ready to discuss new ideas for col-laboration, trade fair partnerships moving towardsnew areas where our group is already a leader:from Salone del Mobile to the exhibitions we or-ganize abroad, up to Made Expo, topics aroundwhich we might build a joint project, test ourselvestogether in a new approach to the developmentand satisfaction of the needs of our companies",De Ponti said.

LORENZO PRIMULTINILorenzo Primultini, president of Acimall, startedby saying thank you to the speakers, praising thevalue of their opinions and the new opportunitiesthat will have to be accurately considered in the

coming season. “Active and practical collabo-ration with Ice and FieraMilano are and willalways be valuable assets, just like an effectiveand proactive relationship with FederlegnoArredo, the possibility to discuss new developmentsthat might be interesting for everyone: Today,“teaming up” is the key to any system: withoutnew partnerships, without encouraging solidrelationships, it is hard to add value to our ex-periences”.“It‘s a great pleasure to meet you today – hethen added to attending media – because weneed your support this year more than ever:there are many ideas and projects we areworking on, and it is essential to be supportedby opinion leaders and trade media from allover the world, to communicate what we aregoing to do”. Primultini stressed that next Xylexpo will be anexhibition of innovations – because that’s whatthe industry today asks from reference trade fairs– and the mirror of a much better economicseason. Xylexpo 2016 should exceed the resultsof 2014, “…when we achieved 440 exhibitors,119 of them international, with a net exhibitionarea just above 26 thousand square meters. To date, figures are much better than in thesame period of two years ago, with just above300 exhibitors, one-third from abroad, whohave submitted registrations for a total exhibitionarea of approximately 25 thousand meters, very close to the 26,176 square meter result of2014. So, we expect to get very close to the450 exhibitors and 30 thousand square metersthresholds. We are optimistic also for visitors:we expect better results than in 2014, when wehad 44 thousand visitors in five days, or 15,250“unique visitors” (30 percent from abroad), afigure we offer to our audience to evaluate thereal business opportunities that Xyexpo can of-fer”, Primultini said.

The Acimall president then announced that, starting from this edition, entrance to Xylexpo willbe free for all operators who register online atwww.xylexpo.com; without pre-registration, anentrance fee will be applied starting from this edi-tion: 15 euro for one day, 25 euro for the entireperio

Primultini could not conceal his satisfaction as hereaffirmed that in 2016 Xylexpo will be again a“complete review”. “Today, at last, at Xylexpowe can find all the industry actors, really allof them. Also Scm Group has decided tocome back to Xylexpo, a decision that encour-ages us to do better and better, driving us towork all together to take new directions and un-dertake big proejcts”.

The first major step into a new direction will bethe participation in the Salone del Mobile.Milano,“…a strong message, a “debut”, an experiencethat highlights the close relationship betweenmachinery and design, the bridge betweenidea and finished product. We will take a placein the big Milan review to show the contributionof technology to living quality, as technologymakes beauty repeatable through fast, powerfuland flexible solutions, capable of turning eventhe most gorgeous item, the most elegant pieceof furniture, into a product affordable to manymore consumers”.

Primultini closed his speech introducing thesecond edition of XIA-Xylexpo InnovationAwards, an award dedicated to innovation fea-turing a jury from academia and professionaleducation, who will select the most innovativeproducts in three categories: “Primary operation”,“Secondary operation” and “Finishing”.

DARIO CORBETTAThe director of Acimall illustrate the industry’seconomic scenario: “The message is clear”,Corbetta said. “Italian companies are still strong, committed, proactive, capable of attracting cus-tomers of any size and any product categoryaround the world. 250 companies, including174 Acimall members. Nine thousand employees, almost 1.8 billion euro turnover, with 75 percentexport share and 18 percent share on globalproduction. Significant figures that represent avital industrial community”.

2015 was a positive year, with production gro-wing up to 1,790 million euro, 7.2 percent morethan in 2014. The trend towards pre-crisis levels(in 2008 the Italian industry turnover exceeded 2

billion euro) is apparent and consi-stent, with export beyond the onebillion euro threshold, still the bigdriver of Italian technology (plus6.8 percent compared to 2014) andimport at 152 billion euro, as muchas 22.5 percent more than 124billion in 2014, for a trade balancethat amounts to 1,188 million euro(plus 5 percent). The domestic market performedwell, exceeding 450 million euro upby 8.7 percent from 414 million in2014. So, also the domestic marketis showing a really positive deve-

lopment, further evidence of the effectiveness ofGovernment measures to support investmentsand a more optimistic business sentiment, en-couraging new investments in the upgrade or ex-pansion of production tools. After highlighting the key contribution of theindustry to the Italian trade balance, Corbettapresented the forecasts of the association’s Stu-dies office for the year that has just started:turnover might grow by 5 to 10 percent, an en-couraging outlook. Good results are expected inthe Usa and Canada, shrinkage on the Russianmarket, slowdown in China, and substantial sta-bility in EU countries. Expectations are positivealso for the domestic market, benefiting fromthe impact of recent industrial policy measuresby the Italian government. These factors should“…give an additional contribution to next Xyl-expo, a traditional review of technological ex-cellence and a meeting place for supply anddemand”, the Acimall director concluded.

MAURIZIO RIVAThe appreciated, exciting and explosive testimonialof the second edition of XIPC-Xylexpo InternationalPress Conference was Maurizio Riva, co-ownerof Riva1920 (www.riva1920.it), based in Cantù,with his brother Davide. The volcanic entrepreneursenchanted Italian and international media as hetold about his job and the relationship betweendesign, wood and technology, but also the passionthat has driven himself and his company to theresults everyone knows. The creator of “Pangea”, the huge table that hasbecome of one of most significant symbols ofExpo Milano, started by saying that we have todo all we can to lend a hand, working togetherfor the welfare of future generations. The carpenter from Cantù, as he loves to callhimself, told about his story, his experience, the

decision to use wood from sustainable sourcesor reused materials, to eliminate chemical sub-stances from his production cycles, using essentialoils for finishing operations.Total respect for wood, for what it represents, forthe stories it tells. “Sometimes, early in the morn-ing, I go to my workshop and I talk to the bigKauri boards we have extracted from the un-derground in a territory in New Zealand, wherethey had been buried for almost fifty thousandyears, and to all the wood pieces waiting to beprocessed. And then I look behind my back, hoping nobody heard me...".

Riva stressed the value of collaboration: “Togetherwe can go wherever we want!”, he said. “Andwe have to do all we can to offer effectivetraining opportunities to young people, bringingthem close to our world. And similarly, we haveto inform designers, architects and engineersabout the opportunities technology can offer.Without these machines, without the support ofnumerical control technology, we wouldn’t bewhere we are today”, Riva concluded.

XIE-XYLEXPO INFORMATION EVENTThe press day was completed by the secondedition of XIE-Xylexpo Information Event, in-volving fourteen companies that really believe inworking together. These “Top Exhibitors” (Salvador,Emc, Giardina Group, Cefla Group, Scm Group,Homag Italia, Biesse Group, Greda, Incomac,Leuco, Costa Levigatrici, Metal World, Imal,Pal) decided to be sponsors of the day and to le-verage the opportunity to meet invited media topreview the new solutions they are exhibiting atFieraMilano-Rho from 24 to 28 May.

Makor, with the goal of providing innovative andleading edge solutions, continues the expansionplan of its range of machines and finishingsystems. Xylexpo exhibition is the ideal venue tointroduce numerous innovations in the variousfields of the finish of panel, profile and woodenfloors. Last born between spraying robot “madein Makor”, is the “Robostart Evolution”, aspraying robot with five interpolated axes, designedfor high quality production, glossy and matt. Thanks to its extreme flexibility, “Robostart Evolu-tion”, properly configured, is the ideal machinefor glue applications on flat and raised panels.“Robostart Evolution” completes the range ofrobots began with the top of “Robospray” and“Robospray Twin” range, characterized by thecombination of an anthropomorphic robot armand an oscillating arm, which makes it perfect forquality painting also of 3D parts. Also in the paintindustry with spray application, Makor introduces“K-TWO”, an oscillating sprayer, for medium-vo-lume production, extremely flexible, self-cleaningtransport belt or with a paper transport system(very interesting is also the solution combiningboth kind of transports).t is characterized by arational ergonomics of accessories, with a limitedinvestment it offers the ideal solution for spray fi-nishing of any type of cabinet doors, furniturecomponents, doors, etc. A very felt requirement,by manufacturers of profiles, is to recover the

greatest possible amount of wood with defects(knots on the profiles, finger joint, etc.) to thepoint of use the large number of people with highmanagement costs. Makor has found the solutionto this problem with the new extruder system(new UV Putty Line). This system, version inhigh/low pressure and capable of using UV coa-tings or water based putty, is able to eliminate thedefects of the wood adjusting to the needs of thecustomer and to the subsequent required finishcycles. The particularity of this system is to acteven on extremely difficult defects (both for sizeand for position on the profile) and use a smallpart of material (UV or water putty) by applying itonly where it is needed, without unnecessary wa-ste.In the field of flooring, Makor presents “Roller-Parquet”, the ideal solution to apply on parquetboards oils or base and topcoat, whether UV-based or at physical catalysis. The modular lineis composed of a roller application unit, a radialwiping unit, a longitudinal brushing unit for stainand oil and a UV drying unit. The system can beconfigured based on the customer needs withdifferent units of application and of subsequentprocessing.Hall 3, stand E11-G12.

MAKOR, THE LATEST SOLUTIONS

A NEW STANDARD IN EDGEBANDING“L-Tec” is a new application for edgebandingmachines “made in Bi-Matic”, a promise madeand kept. We talked about it with Dario Zanutto, sales manager, who illustrated the potential ofthis device displayed at Xylexpo.Laser edges, or better, co-extruded edges. Thisdefinition has been around for a few years now. Anew, appreciated standard that has raised thebar of edgebanding quality, but also the requiredinvestment, so that this technology is often ac-cessible to big companies rather than small andmedium businesses. Unless you find a differentapproach.“That’s what we have done at Bi-Matic”, saysDario Zanutto, sales manager of the company.“We took a conventional edgebanding machineand added an aggregate to activate the polymersof co-extruded edges so that they stick to thepanel. We searched an effective solution tobring the gluing layer to the required temperaturewith an easy process, easy equipment and af-fordable costs of investment and operation".“We used hot air in a different way, operating atlow pressure, about 3/3.5 bar, acting on the airnozzles. It’s an effective system that can takeair temperature beyond 600 degrees, although370/400 are enough for co-extruded edges, while pre-glued edges need 200. Hot air isgenerated continuously: you have to wait about4 minutes to achieve the required temperature, but once the edgebanding machine has beenstarted, the process is executed without any in-terruption until the machine is turned off...Withour “L-Tec”, the purchasing investment fallsfrom more than 100 thousand euro to almosthalf”. “Our “L-Tec” achieves an 18-meter feed

speed, versus25 or more withother edgeban-ders. But aresuch speeds es-sential for thetarget we ad-dress? The de-mand for higherquality edge-banding is clear, but it comesalso from com-panies withsmall productionbatches, so certain levels of feed speed aretotally useless. So, we offer a solution that workswell, very well actually, with a simple and cost-effective concept.”How are your customers reacting?“The market has responded quickly and posi-

tively to our proposal, although the real launchwill be at Xylexpo 2016. A few months ago weorganized an open house in Germany hostingabout one hundred resellers and end users;their reaction was quite positive and we alsoclosed some good orders, especially from edgemanufacturer Ostermann, who took one of ourentry-level machines at the recent Nurembergexhibition. We have seen great appreciation forour decision to create an extensive range, in-cluding about ten machines with speed andperformance levels that meet the requirementsof all types of users and production”. (l.r.)Hall 1, stand Q20.

Seeing him on the other side of the barricades issomewhat embarrassing. But it’s just a nick oftime, because Paolo Zanibon, for a long timegeneral manager of the association of Italianwood technology manufacturers and now mana-ging director of Alberti Engineering, is definitelynot a man who is taken away by emotions. Hemet us to tell about the current business of thecompany based in Gessate, near Milano, a histo-rical brand of Italian technology, well-known forits working centers and drilling-inserting machinesthat have made them popular all over the world.“I have joined Alberti in a very exciting period”,Zanibon says. “Needless to say that the crisiswas tough, but things are changing. Recentlywe have got a major order from a big Spanishgroup, a top player in that young furnituremarket. This is a great result for us, because itproves our capacity to provide solutions to keymanufacturing needs of our customers. We ac-quired this order beating the biggest names inour industry and we went back to the businessof big lines, big plants where our technology, our experience, our expertise can give effectiveanswers. When the customer focused his requeston high customization, Alberti Engineeringproved to have an edge, and our capacity to hitthe target from a technical and economic pointof view emerged. We can always strike theright balance, and this is really appreciatednow, even more than in the past".A line that can execute drilling and inserting ope-rations flexibly and rapidly for a customer thatmanufactures bedrooms and furniture for youngpeople, so a modern line of products with an “in-

ternational style”, like they use to say. This is theidentikit of Alberti Engineering’s latest success,an order from the most representative manufacturerin the Spanish market for this type of furniture.“We worked hard –Zanibon says – studying andproposing not only the necessary machines, but all the accessory equipment, from severalstations for automated loading to a dynamicand intelligent warehouse, with buffers for theentire production cycle, and a direct link to theassembly line. All these components are coor-dinated by a plant manager that optimizes eachprocess stage to achieve a flow that exactlymatches the customer requirements. And con-sider that the starting point are manufacturingbills based on order entries. We have achievedthe goal of managing large-volume highly-frag-mented production, “batch one”, very flexibly, order by order, customer by customer. For bigmanufacturers, having a plant that “thinks” inthis way is a significant competitive edge...".

At Xylexpo Alberti Engineering will be in goodcompany, inside a 600 square meter stand withcompanies they have been profitably collaboratingwith for a long time: Giben for panel saws,Cosmec Technology for working centers andnesting, Bi-Matic for edgebanding. (l.r.)Hall 1, stand Q12.

IMAL-PAL“GREENJOIST”: A NEW RESEARCH INTO THE GREEN WORLD

The innovation project “Greenjoist” will be pre-sented at Xylexpo and is co-financed by EuropeanUnion under the programme “Life+” and is carriedon by a consortium of 5 companies from 4 EUCountries coordinated by Imal. Acimall is partnerfor the dissemination activity. This innovative pro-cess showcases a new process for the productionof high-quality, cost-effective joists from recycledwood waste through the realization of a pilot plantat a pre-industrial, non-commercial scale to de-monstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of thisnovel recycling process. The project starts fromthe design, realization and operation of a pilotplant for the construction of high quality joistsmade from 100 percent recycled wood wasteand using innovative eco-friendly glue based on

lignin, tannin or starch, stemming from researchdeveloped by the partner Chimar (www.chi-marhellas.com). The products, joists, skids, palletblocks etc. made of “Super compacted recycledwood” (Scrw), will also be at least 35 percentcheaper than the usual ones made of virgin solidwood. Additionally, “Greenjoist” will create newmarkets in the logistics and packaging sectors(pallet production, timber mats, frames), in outdoorarchitecture and decoration, piping and construc-tion supports as well as fencing. R&D laboratoryactivities, showing the feasibility and benefits ofthe process, as well as the quality of the end pro-duct, have already been carried out by the projectpartners. The project will require thorough trialsand tuning at a production level, to confirm the

suitability and validity of the equipment, processesand end product. To this end, a pre-commercialpilot plant will be constructed and a set of impactmeasurement and dissemination activities will beput forward. The next step, before proceedingwith the construction of the prototype and sendingit to the partner Eirebloc (www.eirebloc.com),is to verify the possibility of varying the die at theinfeed of the screw to produce the differentformats available on the market. The project iscurrently running to schedule after a changemade to the Consortium partners. Hall 2, stand N13-Q10-Q12.

MACMAZZAA WAREHOUSE CALLED “PIERO”, PATENTED BY MACMAZZA

A brand new patented panel handling automa-tion system presented by Macmazza at Xylexpo2016 is called “Piero”, like a qualified employee. It is a flexible loading/parking/unloading ware-house which eliminates the need of a costlyforklift truck in the area where the panel workingmachine is, or parts of panels have to be recy-cled. This sturdy 3,500-kg platform, capable ofloading 5,000 kg in multiple flexible stations, has been designed and patented to solve thereal bottleneck of any single-blade machine, namely the complex handling of loading/parking,parts/rejects to be recycled or manual unloading, which are normally carried out manually by se-veral operators working in close proximity ofthe machines with the need of a forklift truckand a driver. The forklift operator coming fromthe main panel warehouse, or directly from thesupplier, can organize material supply to theworking island in advance, loading several"Piero" flexible stations in masked time (i.e.while the operator is working on the machine). He also can remove scraps from some stationswhich are not immediately recyclable and de-posit, close to the operator, panels of differentcolor, thickness, size and material, as requiredto complete the most urgent flexible orders. This approach also allows the operator tochange sequence also to respond to just-in-time orders, by selecting one picking stationand taking it to the machine loading/unloadinglevel at the right time in a completely independentway. Macmazza beam saws are also equippedwith software for the stockpiling and handlingof trimmings, which can be deposited in one ormore of the stations on the “Piero” machine. So, Macmazza has turned the present economicslowdown to its advantage by investing in ‘outof wood’ solutions such as the cutting of 130-mm-thick panels of heavy duty plastic, aluminum, fiber cement, etc., as well as in the developmentof projects and patents for this ‘automation forpanels’ which can efficiently feed small batchesto flexible working islands and/or outsize shops,

with all the machines working ‘in’ or ‘out of wood’panels. The dimensions of “Piero” can be totallycustomized and, with its shelves fitted with wheels, the unit supports the easy handling of delicatepanels.“Piero” was designed to be built, testedand preassembled in the Macmazza workshop, and then easily reassembled and used by staffwith no specific expertise in mechanical engi-neering, even less in electronics. As you can see in the picture, “Piero” perfectlycombines with the rotating air flotation table, another Macmazza's international patent, providingan alternative and intermediate solution betweena front loading system and a machine with rearloading platform. Together with this automationsolution, Macmazza is displaying a “TS100” sin-gle-blade saw with grippers, where the bottlenckof front loading has been eliminated to leveragethe full potential of the machine. Enhancementsinclude: optimized axis control according to actualpanel size and thickness; increased axis speed, also adjustable by variable speed motors accordingto the properties of materials to be cut and the re-quested cutting quality; extended stroke lengthof the side aligning unit to combine the simulta-neous rotation and cross-cutting of several stripson the entire table, whereby the strips are clampedtogether and aligned without any effort by theoperator, also thanks to the entire supportingtable on the extraction side.Hall 1, stand N22-P21.

“Sprint Ma-6707” is a new Eva based hot-meltwith the higher temperature resistance and thelower glue line visibility. Laboratorios Rayt S.A.is a European producer of glues and adhesivesfor the woodworking industry, focused on hot-melt adhesives for edgebanding and profile wrap-ping as well as a world wide leading companyestablished in 1953. They manufacture their ownadhesives in three plants which are located aroundBarcelona area (Spain) where they also havetheir own research and development centres.Rayt glues & adhesives is manufacturing hot-melt adhesives since 1964. This large experienceand knowledge, in addition to an outstandingquality and competitive prices, have made themthe leading company in Spain and one of the topten independent manufacturers of adhesives inEurope. Its adhesives in the woodworking industryare firmly settled in more than 40 countries by astrengthen cooperation with a selected and reliabledistributor network. Instead of staying like this,Rayt is always looking to expand its presence inother countries so this is one of the reasons whythey are exhibiting at Xylexpo for the first time.Xylexpo is a great opportunity to get to know newdistribution partners and introduce them the Raytcompany and its adhesives in order to expandthe distributor’s business opportunities with theirproducts. Regarding a new product which will be shown atXylexpo, Rayt knows that the furniture producers− their customers − are always facing to improvetheir offer and product performance.

One of the key points is related to the visibility ofthe glue line on the edge as well as its temperatureresistance. Many solutions have been developedlast years in order to solve these issues. The vastmajority of these solutions mean a huge investmentin new machinery with less flexibility in terms ofedgeband offer and higher production costs. Orit means a move to another product technologylike polyurethane reactive hot-melts which carriesmore expenses in terms of product cost andcareful use. This is the reason why Rayt has beenworking in a new Eva based hot-melt in order tooffer a very low visibility of the glue line with avery high temperature resistance. Always keepingthe competitive cost of a traditional Eva basedproduct as well as its easy-to-use way. The new“Sprint MA-6707” will fit the expectations for thefurniture producers who want to improve theirfinal product but don’t want to expend moremoney on this purpose. Hall 3, stand M32.

BIESSE AT XYLEXPO, INTRODUCING THE FACTORY 4.0Biesse confirms its presence at the 25th editionof Xylexpo trade fair. With a bigger stand than in2014, and with more than 20 machines on display,Biesse aims to demonstrate how anyone canseize the rich opportunities offered by the so-called Industrial Revolution 4.0: having antici-pated the future needs of the market and its cu-stomers, Biesse can now translate into practicethis concept.“For us, 4.0 is not simply a number representingthe so-called new industrial revolution, but areal commitment toward our customers to allowthem, thanks to our "4.0-ready" technologies, toachieve levels of efficiency which today, morethan ever, are crucial for keeping abreast of thecompetition in an increasingly global market.

We fully believe in this unstoppable industrialprocess, indeed, so much so that we are dedi-cated to spreading the culture of automationamong all of our customers, even medium-sized and smaller companies, in order to guidethem on the path to increased competitiveness,"says Federico Broccoli, Wood/Sales Divisiondirector and subsidiaries division manager.“This revolution, which we want to render ac-cessible to everyone, aims to bring togetherthe high output numbers seen in the assemblychain with the tailor-made value of artisan pro-duction. In a world where those who offer qualityand a personalised touch at increasingly lowprices come out on top, factories are turningdigital: the machines communicate amongst

themselves via au-tomation systems andinteraction software, and can "imagine" theproduct, simulate con-struction and carry outtests before it haseven been made" -commented RaphaëlPrati, marketing andcommunications direc-tor for Biesse Group.Following the conceptof “Think4ward”, thecompany's fundamen-tal desire is to remain

by the side of its customers throughout the challengesthat the fourth industrial revolution will bring, through anapproach that is marked by innovation and change, without descending into complication - on the contrary, the goal is to simplify the various phases of design andproduction through the use of machines characterisedby unmatched rapidity and ease of use.2,000 square meters of exhibition space will allow visitorsto see the integrated systems up close, with machinesfor working panels and solid wood and new softwaremodules which can simplify the management of eventhe most complex and advanced large-scale technologicalsolutions, as well as the operations of small-medium-sized companies. This technology allows our customers to work moreeconomically, in small batches, with lower machiningtimes, whilst improving the quality and quantity of theirproducts. Biesse is guided by a practical philosophy, whichfocuses on improving machining quality, optimising pro-cesses and reducing costs and waste, while increasingproductivity and quality. FOCUS

The past few months have seen this company workingon various fronts, to propose during the Xylexpo 2016solutions and services that help the manufacturer ofwooden frames to promote their products. Sellingmethods have changed, as has market presence. Allmarkets today call for new awareness and new pace:Rekord intends not only to keep up, but to blaze newtrails in the development of tools and systems for woodendoor and window frames. Evidence of this are the com-pany’s latest new products and projects under develop-ment. One of these new entries is explained to us by en-gineer Pierantonio Santini, who has been the newGeneral Director at Rekord for about three months now. With an important career in the electrical/energy sectorbehind him, he has worked for Italian companies andmultinationals, first as a technician and then as a com-ponents and systems sales manager. Following this, asmanagement consultant he was responsible for develo-ping new products and markets, again in the same in-dustrial sector. “I was happy to accept this job”,explains Pierantonio Santini, “because I believe thatRekord has a great deal of potential to be exploited.Today’s market definitely calls for new systems; theclient has evolved but we too are evolving. Prioritiesdefinitely include consolidation of our presence on

certain specific markets, in-cluding those in Europe, where several years ago westarted intense promo activity.In-house, we have put in placea process to optimise our re-sources, creating new pro-fessional figures that will allowthe company to stand outfrom both a technical and “re-lationship” point of view.

THE NEW “ESPERIA LIFE” SYSTEM“Esperia Life” is the most important new product for Re-kord. Based on the consolidated “Esperia” project,“Esperia Life” enables Rekord to now see things nolonger as a simple tool manufacturer but as a systemsanalyst who takes on the entire production process inorder to offer a complete product in every sense. With this new system, Rekord in fact aims to work alon-gside wooden door and window frame manufacturers, delivering not only the tool, but a whole series of completeservices and information that will help us to supply avast range of clients, from private homeowners to com-panies. “‘Esperia Life’ offers many benefits”, continuesengineer Santini. “It is primarily a solution targetingthose who believe in respect for the environment andwho, as a consequence, refuse to use Pvc as abuilding element. We can then highlight the product’senviable aesthetics that, thanks to concealed profiles, fit in beautifully with modern style and adapt to reno-vations. It is also important to emphasise the easyfast assembly of these frames, whether in the wood orwood-aluminium version, plus the economic savingslinked to the simplicity with which our client canchange over to production of the wood-aluminiumversion. It will no longer be necessary to have a ware-house full of outer frames, as this system uses barseither cut to measure or easy to cut. As can be seen, the benefits are not linked to the toolas such, but to the production of a competitive newwooden door and window frame, made possibleentirely thanks to a tool, a series of processes and asystem resulting from in-depth studies that only Rekordis able to develop and supply”.Hall 2, stand L07-M06.
