School locations are approximate. This map is based on a map that dates to the early1900s that was in the county commissioner’s office for many years. In the last 100 years, many roads have changed and lakes have been built, making locations sometimes difficultto determine. We welcome new information about any additions or corrections to thismap.

School in Polk County 60years ago was quite differentthan it is now. High schoolswere few and far between in atime when people didn’t havecars. Younger students wereserved by more than 100 ruralschool districts, close enoughthat almost everyone was with-in walking distance of a school.

The rural schools coveredgrades one through eight usu-ally all in one room. Theteacher was also the nurse, custodian and sole disciplinar-ian, and was often quite young. In the 1930s and ’40s, a personcould teach in Missouri afterpassing a teacher’s exam in thecounty superintendent’s office, and many of those teacherstook college classes duringsummer sessions. A few yearslater, 60 college hours (typical-ly two years) were required fora teaching certificate.

Laura Zumwalt Paynebegan teaching at Greenleaf inHuron right out of high school. She took summer classes atSouthwest Baptist College andSouthwest Missouri State Col-lege. Before she retired fromBolivar Schools in 1975, shehad also taught at Center Pointnorth of Bolivar, Ingles north ofPolk and at Goodson.

“The rural schools werealmost like a family,” she said.“I have an angel ornament thathas hung on my Christmastree every year that came froma card given to me by my Good-

son students.”School funds were provided

from a tax authorized by theMissouri Legislature to beapproved by a two-thirdsmajority vote of the people ineach county.

“The board took care of thebusiness; the teacher was incharge of education and disci-pline,” said Dean Polly of HalfWay. Polly is a product of ruralschools and a graduate of theHalf Way Consolidated HighSchool. He said the high schoolconsolidated in 1929 and the ele-mentary schools later. His fatherwas a member of the three-per-son board of the consolidateddistrict from 1929-1939.

“Teacher salary and wood orcoal for heating were the majoritems of expense,” he said.“Books were used for years andthe library book supply wassmall, but we did have a set ofWorld Books.”

For monthly teacher salariesand any other expenses, theschool clerk wrote warrants thatwere submitted to the countytreasurer for a check. The onlymoney handled by the schoolwas the pie supper profit, whichwas spent by the teacher asapproved by the board.

Alice McCarthy Hensley ofBolivar, who attended CenterPoint school (Moore District No.20), said pie suppers were heldin the fall of each year to helpmake money for things thatwere needed.

“There would be a program bythe children and penny-a-point

votes for things like most lovesickcouple, man with the dirtiest feetand most popular young miss,”she said. “Then boxes of foodprepared by the ladies and girlswere auctioned off.”

In a one-room school, theteacher would teach one gradewhile the other students wouldwork on their own until timefor their classes. Sometimesstudents would take grades outof order because only everyother grade was taught, forexample first, third, fifth andseventh would be taught oneyear and second, fourth, sixthand eighth the next.

Polly said his school daybegan at 9 a.m. and dismissedat 4 p.m. There were two 15-minute recesses during the dayand a one-hour lunch period.

Hensley remembered schoolactivities that included the wholegroup, such as nature walks, spelling bees and arithmeticcontests. The teacher wouldread a chapter from an outsidereading book every day afterlunch. At Center Point, themusic teacher from Bolivarcame about every two weeks toteach singing and music, andthe county health nurse cameabout once a month to check thegeneral health of the students.

In 1949 the Missouri Legis-lature required school districtsto vote on reorganization. Reor-ganization passed in 1949 forHalf Way, Morrisville and Pleas-ant Hope. Bolivar, Fair Playand Humansville did not passreorganization until 1951.
