I think the message is that at the end of the day, everybody has to mature and everybody has to heal and mend their own injuries, emotional injuries, on their own pace.

— Boris Kodjoe

Parents can only give good advice or put their children on the right paths, but the final forming of a person’s character lies in their own hands.

1. What is the key insight in The Odyssey, a long poem by the Greek author Homer?

The essentials of the journey are not only outward struggles against tremendous difficulties, but, more importantly, inward struggles leading to personal growth. His journey is the one of self-discovery and of combating his own arrogance and pride from his young rebellious heart. It makes sense to borrow The Odyssey from Greek mythology to describe the rebellious years young people usually go through.

2. What does “Generation Jones” mean?

A term used to describe the generation born right after World War II in 1945 through 1965. It’s usually identified with “baby boomers”. Key characteristics assigned to these members are less optimism, distrust of government, and general cynicism.

3. What is special feature of Generation Z?

It is also known as the Net or the Internet Generation. In the US and other Western nations, it is a common name for the people born from the mid-1990s or early 2000s through to the present. This generation has spent their entire life with the World Wide Web and high-tech gadgets.

How do you understand the following quotes “What I do is all for you” and “Put yourself far enough away to give your child much room but close enough to help him or her if asked”?

Chinese and western education differ widely in a first

embodiment of family education. Chinese parents

tend to educate their children in a directive, command

type. They plan for all, make their area of control, and

pay few attention to children’s independent ability.

However, the western family education is quite

different, parents tend to put their children in equal

status. This gives the child enough space. Parents pay

attention to children's awareness and abilities to stand

on their own.

Q1: How much do you know about this American family

sitcom “Growing Pains”?

Critical Critical thinkingthinking

This ABC family sitcom revolved around the Seaver family, who lived on Long Island in New York. Dr Seaver, a psychologist and his wife Maggie Seaver, a journalist, try to do their best raising their family and although their kids, Mike, Ben, Carol and Crissie, cause them endless problems, they manage to keep the family close together. As long as they got each other, nothing else matters.

It is not regarded as a comedy over there but a life lesson and a sociology course. Nowadays, It's hard enough to raise kids of Odyssey years, but when you have to cope with the kids, things tend to get out of hand, because young people are wandering and going through life, exploring and discovering themselves. They fall in and out of love; they try one career and then try another.

Focus on a comparison / contrast essayTo compare means to show the similarities and to contrast means to show the differences. In everyday life, you compare and contrast when you buy a car or choose an apartment. You can also compare two teachers, two jobs, or two ways to spend a weekend. There are some important points to remember when you write a comparison / contrast essay:

The items being compared or contrasted

must be from the same category. In other

words, they should be comparable.

It is better to mention the points you

would like to compare or contrast in the

thesis statement so as to let readers

know about the main idea in your essay

right away.

There are two basic patterns to organize the details of your essay: point-by-point and subject-by-subject. Here, point refers to the aspects you would like to use to develop your essay, and subject refers to the two items or people you want to compare or contrast. In this unit, you will learn how to use the point-by-point pattern. For instance, if you compare two generations, you may organize the details as follows:

many students who are still in high school have

them gain more experience and they can work

better after graduating from universities. This is

an absolutely opposite view to their parents’

generation. In their times, parents often waited

until they were qualified enough to get a job.

As teenagers, they want to chase for

freedom, they are at the age of pursing

individualism. They want to show that they are

mature enough, they can make their own

decision. While as parents, they watch their kids

all their life, they haven’t realized that their kids
