In 2012, always within the context of the fight against hunger, we focus on Millennium Development Goal 6,

which invites us to work to reduce the incidence rate of AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis in the poorest com-

munities on the Earth. We also try to raise awareness on Chagas disease, dengue, sleeping sickness and all

the “forgotten diseases”, so named since, as they mainly affect the poorest and are not very frequent in the

rich North, not much research is carried out on them. Unfortunately, such issues are a reality in our world

today. At Manos Unidas we work so they will cease to be so.

Africa is the continent worst hit. The causes that collaborate to making this so are various, and among them

we have the wars and conflicts raging in so many countries, which prevent development projects from being

carried out in them.

As for Asia, we see how the combination of tuberculosis and AIDS causes millions of deaths every year. Two

thirds of the cases of tuberculosis occur in Asia. This disease, believed to be under control, has reappeared

and in a particularly devastating way, bringing lethal consequences when combined with HIV/AIDS. It is vital

to work on its prevention, as we can see in the projects we support.

America continues to suffer great inequalities, aggravated by the global economic crisis.

The slogan of the 2012 campaign was: “Health, everyone’s right”. And the second part of the slogan invited

us not to remain passive: “Act now!”; without that support, our work would be affected, because in our

sector we can also feel the crisis. It is as if a curtain was put in front of the poorest countries, making it more

difficult for us to see them. But let’s not be discouraged. Our commitment to them continues, both on the

part of Manos Unidas and, I also believe, on that of the whole Spanish population. In 2012 there was a great

reduction in income from public sources in our organisation, but as far as that from private sources is con-

cerned, this reduction has been minimum, which, in our case, is very important because this part represents

85.6% of the total.

Therefore, and in spite of the difficulties we’re going through, we could say that the support we receive to

combat hunger remains solid. Many thanks to everybody for honouring this commitment. We feel we are not

alone. We wish to respond with our day-to-day work, maintaining our hallmark, taking care of values such as

austerity and transparency, not forgetting our target as an institution: the poor, the fight against hunger and

against its causes. We shall continue to work as long as poverty exists. We continue to work hard for this

cause, as we have been doing now for over fifty years.

Manos Unidas is the Spanish Catholic Church Organisation for the aid, promotion and development of the Third World. It is at the same time a Catholic and secular Non-Governmental Development Organisation (NGDO), made up of volunteers.

It is our mission to fight against famine, nutritional deficiency, poverty, disease, underdevelopment, and lack of education; and to work to eradicate the structural causes producing them: injustice, unequal distribution of goods and opportunities among people and communities, ignorance, prejudices, lack of solidarity, indifference and the crisis of human and Christian values (Articles of Association, Art. 5).

VOLUNTARY WORKERSManos Unidas defines itself in its Articles of Association as an organisation of voluntary workers. We

understand voluntary work as a vocation, giving witness to values such as gratuitousness and solidarity,

more than ever necessary in our society today. This distinguishing feature materialises in the 5,304 vol-

unteers who dedicated their time and good work to the organisation all year round. This number of

people increases significantly at peak Campaign times. The Manos Unidas governing bodies are made

up of volunteers. Together with them, a small number of people have contracts of employment, and

they are an inseparable part of the organisation, always respecting the principles and criteria of Manos

Unidas.

MEMBERS & COLLABORATORSMany are the people whose lives have im-

proved thanks to the wholehearted support

of the Manos Unidas 85,250 members and

collaborators in 2012. This spirit of commun-

ion, solidarity, gratuitousness and justice is

what drives us on to keep fighting for a bet-

ter world.

In 1955 the World Union of Catholic Women’s Organisations (WUCWO) declared “waragainst hunger”. In 1959 the call was seconded in Spain by the Catholic ActionWomen, constituting the “Campaign Against Hunger in Spain”, which later wouldbecome known as Manos Unidas.

DELEGATIONSManos Unidas has a diocesan structure, which means it is present throughout the whole Spanish geography.

The mission of the 70 diocesan Delegations of Manos Unidas is to raise the awareness of the population on

the global situation and the collecting of donations for the financing of the projects supported by the organ-

isation. In order to meet their objectives a great number of activities are carried out.

Manos Unidas maintains two lines of work:� raising the awareness and denouncing the existence of hunger and

In 2012, Manos Unidas held its LIII Campaign, which under the slogan “Health:everyone’s right: Act now!” has wished to focus especially on the fight againstmalaria, AIDS and other diseases, Millennium Development Goal 6.

Raising Public Awareness

� Link Operation generates relationships between persons or groups of the Spanish society and thecommunities that receive the support of Manos Unidas, bringing their situation and living conditionscloser, and achieving a greater sensitization and commitment toward Southern countries. In 2012,Manos Unidas carried out 501 Link Operations for a total sum of €20,599,612.52 .

Link Operation

The 2012 campaign focused on the protection of everyone’s right to

health, as embodied in Millennium Development Goal 6, combating

HIV/AIDS, malaria and the so-called forgotten diseases, which for

being so are more virulent among the poor. With the slogan “Health,

everyone’s right: Act now!” we wished to transmit the message to

the Spanish society that health and development go together. The

dissemination of this campaign has been backed by the elaboration

of information and advertising materials, as well as the support of

the media.

ingly more people committed to

social transformation, who feel re-

sponsible for the well-being of

others and the need to contribute

to the development of those most

in need.

To achieve this, we encourage the training of children and young

people, as the future of the world is in their hands. We have prepared

education in values materials for all educational levels, and supported

teachers with courses and workshops to help them carry out this

task. For younger children, we have trained Manos Unidas persons

in storytelling workshops, organising this activity in schools.

Furthermore, experts in health and

development took part in Manos

Unidas XI Forum, “Health for De-

velopment”, which was held in Má-

laga and other cities in Andalusia,

where causes and consequences

of the diseases were analysed, and

the solutions that are already being

implemented with the support of

Manos Unidas were shown.

Manos Unidas takes part in different national and international

thematic campaigns related to our mission of combating hunger

and poverty and focusing on the relationship existing between

climate justice, food security and sustainable development. It has

been present at important international processes, for example the

United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Río + 20),

Food Security Committee (FAO) and the work processes dialogue

for preparing the new global development agenda beyond 2015.

One of the main tasks of Manos Unidas is to denounce and make the Spanish society aware of

the existence of hunger and underdevelopment, as well as their causes and possible solutions.

In 2012 Manos Unidas has taken part in 56 developing

countries supporting 550 very diverse projects and initia-

tives, arising from people who fight every day to overcome

poverty.

More than 870 million people in the world suffer from

hunger, victims of an unjust world order, severely suffering

the efects of the economic and financial crisis increased by

the effects of climate change and environmental degra-

dation. The food crisis is also being accentuated by other

factors such as food speculation, biofuels or land grabbing,

causing 15% of the world’s population to suffer from HUNGER.

The fast economic growth some of the so-called

emerging countries must not cause us to lose sight of

the increase of an acute and growing inequality in said

countries, which leads sectors of the population to

abject poverty.

Combating hunger, working for the right to food,

is one of the main focuses of the work of Manos Uni-

das, which we tackle through programmes aimed at

guaranteeing the food security of the most vulnera-

ble communities.

Furthermore, persons who are victims of con-

flicts, forgotten emergencies (earthquakes, floods,

famines…) or trafficking in persons, continue to be

at the heart of the work of Manos Unidas, persons we

support in countries such as Haiti, Somalia, South

Sudan or Burma.

Within a global context of uncertainty, aware of

the tough and unjust reality suffered by millions of

people all over the world, Manos Unidas, inspired by

the principles of the Social Doctrine of the Church, and

moved by the suffering of the impoverished and for-

gotten, continues to support the more vulnerable

communities, promoting food security, access to water,

heath and education, especially in those countries

with a low development index and whose States do

not guarantee them these basic rights.

But the fight against poverty in a globalised world

like the one we live in, also has to be a global and co-

ordinated response. To do so, we work with other Eu-

ropean organisations belonging to the CIDSE network

and with the Church Social Services and Southern Car-

itas members, so that our response to the needs

which come to us will be more efficient.

africaAfrica, a continent consisting of 54 countries, nearly

all of them classified as the so-called developing

countries, since 1995, and especially in recent years,

is experiencing strong economic growth due to the

rise in the prices of natural resources, the diversification

of its exports and the application of new technologies.

There is also a rising trend toward the improvement

of political institutions and changes in the countries’

economic policies.

But Africa has many faces, and this strong economic growth is not always accom-

panied by improvements in the population’s living conditions. We continue to wit-

ness interregional conflicts, situations of famine or food crises that highlight the

widening of the gap dividing the poor and the rich, in the same continent. Therefore,

we paradoxically have to speak of food insecurity in a continent with vast exten-

sions of fertile land, large amounts of water and an optimal climate for many crops.

And that food insecurity is accompanied by war conflicts that lead to thousands of

displaced persons, refugees and deaths.

Mozambique is a country rich in raw materials and fertile land, but which suffers cyclical famine insome areas. Every year we train 320 young people in farming techniques at the Martín Cipriano In-stitute in Mozambique so that they can defend family agriculture, also replicating this knowledge intheir home villages, thus multiplying the project’s effect.

From manos Unidas we support the empowerment of therural population, making special emphasis on children,young people and women, giving them the educationand training they require to allow them to defend them-selves against the agricultural policies carried out bytheir governments in favour of the emerging foreign po-wers, defending their right to the land and basic services.

americaLatin America is the continent of inequality.

Latin-American relationships –between persons and countries-

are based on inequality. Some countries even appear as “emerging”,

with high levels of income, but in all of them most of their inhabitants

suffer abject poverty levels. Skyscrapers can be found alongside shanty

towns, dazzling city centres alongside backward rural areas, modern

industrial and financial installations alongside obsolete agriculture, the

greatest of wealth alongside the deepest of poverty…

Forty women from three indigenous com-munities in Guatemala have receivedtraining in farmyard husbandry, whichhas helped us to be able to diversify ourfood and mitigate the situation of insecu-rity in which we live to secure daily food.We have also been able to benefit fromtraining resources, traditionally forbid-den to us, know our rights, and improveour participation in local organisationsand the taking of decisions.

These are some of the reasons why in our work in Latin america, we give pri-ority to productive farming projects, in order to guarantee the food securityof the poor. We dedicate approximately 50% of our resources to these pro-jects. We try to reduce the vulnerabilities of poor populations, promote agri-cultural and farming models better adapted to the environment, improve theproductivity of the land using ecological methods, defend native seeds, sus-tainable agriculture and collective production and commercialisation, etc.

India is one of the nations with the greatest economic growth. But 25% of its population (mainly women

and children) live beneath the poverty threshold. There also exists great discrimination of women re-

garding men. It is estimated that there have been 8 million female foetus abortions over the last decade.

In addition, there is female infanticide, one of the worst scourges in this country, where giving birth to

a baby girl is a stigma for the family. To understand this, it is necessary to know and understand Indian

culture; economy is a determining factor for families seeking to give birth to and raising a son and avoid-

ing having daughters. Girls are viewed as a burden, since they “are lost” to the family and also need a

dowry payment when married off. Boys, however, stay in the family, they work and support it, and

when they marry they bring a dowry into the home. This also explains how most women do not receive

formal education, as they are are expected to look after the house and their younger siblings.

In South East Asia, trafficking in

persons as well as labour and sexual

exploitation are another sign of the general

context of violence suffered by women,

who are often only considered by their own families

as a way of generating income.

Thanks to the support of Manos Unidas, women in Uttarakhand (Nor-thern India) have been able to improve their quality of life throughincome generating programmes, and in our villages community groupshave been created to prevent and reduce domestic violence. In addi-tion, the strengthening of the community organisation has allowed usto take part in the taking of decisions on all levels: family, social andpolitical.

in view of all this, manos Unidas wishes to empowerwomen through education and work: it also supportsawareness-raising programmes against social injustice,which are the first steps toward creating conditionsthat favour and ensure the full development of women’spotentialities and capacities.

There is increasingly more social awareness, sup-

ported by the reflection of experts and specialists and

disseminated by the media, that ridding the world of

famine today is not a matter of lack of means but a

political decision. However, we see how United Na-

tions bodies and the major power governments do

not take decisive measures to put an end to it, toler-

ating conflicts sustained by economic interests, for

example in Congo, which brings extraordinary suffer-

ing to the population.

We see how interests are more important than

people’s wellbeing, especially in the case of the poor:

exactly the opposite of what it should be, since the

poor need even greater protection.

The Exhortation “Caritas in veritate” tells us that

the development of the people is not just an eco-

nomic issue, but also a moral one. “Development is im-

possible without upright men and women, without fin-

anciers and politicians whose consciences are finely at-

tuned to the requirements of the common good.”

(Number 71). And this implies not only governments,

but also multinational companies and anybody who

inspires, dictates or regulates the world’s principal

commercial and economic regulations.

It has been the mission of Manos Unidas for more

than fifty years now to promote that moral consis-

tency, defend the value of the people in all circums-

tances. In this year’s Report we can see specific and

tangible examples of this commitment.

By financing development projects, our associa-

tion makes it possible for specific aspirations from the

poorest communities to become reality. Furthermore,

it tries to instil in us a caring mentality and culture, in

which the logic of hoarding gives way to those of ded-

ication and gifts. Bearing in mind an idea which is valid

for all is when Pope Francis asks the Church to “come

out of herself” and to go out to “the peri-pheries”,

where the poorest are, and, among them, those who

are hungry, those whose basic needs are not covered.

I would like to thank all Manos Unidas’ members,

collaborators and workers because they make it pos-

sible, year after year, that hope does not disappear

from the heart of the poorest communities in the

world. May God bless you and may you live with the

peace of knowing you have done what you had to do!
