South West Dental service provided screening at the
school last week as well as information sessions for
students. The sessions were very interactive with
many questions being asked and knowledge shared.
South West Health Care staff were very impressed
by the students and their willingness to
be so involved in the sessions.
Thanks you to Balmoral Community
College for partnering with us to deliver
this important health promotion initiative.
Travel Immunisations
We are very impressed with the number of travel vaccinations we are administering of
late. What a worldly community we have! A reminder that if the doctor writes your
script and you have it filled in town, that the temperature control of the vaccine must
be controlled and kept within the temperature range recommended.
So pack an esky, make sure your fridge is the right temperature, or alternatively drop it
into us here as soon as you can. Our immunisation nurses can not
administer your medication if storage standards are not met.
Please give us a call to discuss further if you have any further
questions. Happy travels !!

Every session includes a bit of:
Keeping your mind active is a way of Exercising
Brain Teasers
So how do you stay fit until a ripe, old age?
It’s important to keep your brain active. Research from US universities shows that
staying mentally, socially and intellectually fit can help keep your mind vital and alert. Just think of
your brain as a muscle that needs regular exercise to physically change and improve how it
operates. How do you exercise your brain? It’s all about opening your mind up to new
experiences every day.
Stay interested in the world. Read a newspaper every day, including the pages you normally
skip, such as the sports section, letters to the editor or world news.
Spend time with provocative people who challenge the way you think and express different
opinions to you.
Attempt the newspaper crossword every day, and see how much better you get each week.
Learn a new skill, whether it’s speaking Spanish, Thai cooking or playing a musical
instrument.
Laugh
One of the easiest ways to keep your mind positive is to laugh a little every day. Here’s what a little
giggle can do for you:
It releases endorphins, reducing psychological stress.
It increases immunoglobulin—A in your system, which helps fight sickness.
It increases oxygen consumption and improves respiration.
It burns kilojoules!
It produces anti-inflammatory agents that fight back pain and arthritis.
It reduces levels of serum cortisol, the stress hormone.
It stimulates your T-cells, your disease-fighting immune cells.
Planned Activity Group Welcome to our new local
Policeman Leading Senior Constable
Brent Reed and family. Thank you to
Brent for making the time to visit us at
the Centre, everyone was able to ask
questions. Brent was able to talk
about his role as the local Policeman
and most importantly enjoy an
afternoon together.
To the school we headed to the new
Café “The Weekly Grind Café”, there
we had our lunch prepared and
served by the students under the
guidance of Jackie Grant. Well done
to the students we all appreciated
their work in cooking and preparing
the lunch. We headed back to the
Centre to be entertained by the
children from the Family Day Care
Centre. We were given drawings the
children had completed and they
explained about each of their
drawings, some very special artists
among the group. The children then
entertained us all with their singing.
Thanks to Lana and staff for bringing
the children down to see us for the
afternoon.
We visited Sylvania Park in Horsham,
we met with Rowena who farms An-
gora goats. We learnt about the rais-
ing of Angora goats and mohair
products that are produced. The
goats are small but grow lots of mo-
hair and are shorn twice a year, the
mohair is sent to South Africa to be
sold. Then it was to the RSL in Hors-
ham for lunch before heading home.
Men’s Shed members have been
touring the country side first trip to
Kanvia to visit Wayne Rabone.
Wayne commenced collecting at
the age of seven collecting cards,
stamps, coins and lapel badges.
Then things started to get out of
control, Wayne’s collections spreads
over three sizeable sheds and
outdoors and there was something of
interest for everyone to see. We trav-
elled to Portland to see the new
Portland Men’s Shed and enjoy lunch
with other Shed members from
around the district. We had an inter-
esting trip to Ron Elliott’s to collect
some Red Gum. Ron gave us a tour
of his timber yard and some of the
many projects he has ahead to do.
Everyone enjoyed getting warm by
his outdoor fire. A Special thank you
to Ron for donating some Red Gum
to the Men’s Shed.

This month at play group we welcomed some
newcomers to Balmoral. We had a lot of fun
making fish and playing with ‘fluffy slime’ the
table may never be the same again but the
children had loads of fun and even the mums
joined in. The holidays are coming up so
play group will be back on the 28th July and
every fortnight there after at 10am so look
forward to seeing you all there.
“Love your smile, visit the dentist”
This month at the
Balmoral Early
Learning Centre In June, we started to plant more vegetables in our garden. We
grew broad beans in cotton wool, allowing them to create a root
system, and then transferred them to pot plants to help them to
grow. The children also planted peas and created areas for the
plants to climb on. The children are learning how to look after their
natural environment and are beginning to understand what
elements are required for plants to grow. The children really
enjoyed digging the soil from our digging patch to plant out our
board beans and look forward to cooking with our produce in the
months to come.
The children have showed interest in creating obstacle courses, so
each session we allow the children to help us create a new course.
The children are able to develop their gross motor skills such as
balance, coordination and fitness, as well as enhancing their
communication skills and teamwork. During the winter months, the
children are limited in their outdoor play, so we ensure that their
time spent outside is worthwhile and benefits their learning
experience.
We were very lucky to be able the visit the PAG group on Tuesday
13th June to read a book and perform a concert. We read “Noisy
Wild Animals” by Steve Lavis, which enables the children to
develop their speech sounds and build their confidence to speak in
front of a crowd. The children then performed some songs that we
have been practicing, such as “I have a little turtle”, “ring-a-ring-a-
rosie” and “here we go round the mulberry bush”. The children
were very excited to perform for the PAG group and we were very
proud of their confidence. Some of the children made pictures to
give to the PAG group and were able to chat with our crowd
before leaving. Thank you to the PAG group for allowing us to
come for a visit, the children loved performing for you!
