PART I- GENERAL
1.1 Description of Work
Decorative broom-finish.;;:d concrete \Valkways shall consist of placing poured-in-place concrete which is finished using standard concrete tooling procedures, and finished in their center panels vtith a light broom surfacing. (See druwingR-2.x) Non-standard border widths may he approved based on site-specific design issues or acceptable job site samples. B. Expression lines may be enhanced by saw-cutting. Intersecting expression Jines shall not cross one another or extend to the end of panel. ln most cases, expression lines that encounter obstructions such as manhole covers, utility boxes, street lights, fire hydrants, etc should be laid so as to go around (rather than through) the obstruction. lntrusions into the central field to accommodate these adjustment<; are allowed as needed. See drawing R-2_x)
PART 2- MATERIALS
2.1 Aggregate Base
The aggregate base shall be \!DOT #21A aggregate sub-base or approved other graded aggregate base conforming to VDOT Section 205 gradation 25 or 26 or coarse aggregate of size 68 in conformance with Section 203 of the VDOT Specifications. (May require preparation of a stabilized sub-grade).
2.2 Concrete
The concrete shall have a minimum compressive strength of 4,000 psi, reinforced with impregnating fibers at 1.5 lbs. per cubic yard. £1ortland cement shall. ~,;on[orm to ASTM. C J SQ Type I, U or V depending on soil conditions. Aggregates shall conform fu ASTM C 33. Mixing water shall be fresh, clean and potable. An admjxture complyjng with ASTM C 260 shall be used to achieve an entra ined air content of 6%. No admixtures containing calcium chloride shall be pcFmitted.
2.3 Tint
Integral color - if used - shall be approved beforehand by sample provided to County landscape plan adminllitraLor, and spr.:ciiied by name and formula on ~:~pproved landscaP,e plans.
2.4 Texture
All fields will be finished with a light or medium broom finish, applied with a wide, concrete or paperhanging brush.
2.5 Joint Filler
Joint filler shal l be (/2-inch preformed asphalt expansion joint material conforming to ASTM T>994 or ASTM 01751, or closed cell poly foam (ex])_anded polyethylene) conforming to A.S.T.M. 01752, Section!'> 3.1 through""-3.4.
PART 3- EXECUTION
3.1. Concrete testing shall be eonducted in confOrmance with Section 03100.
3.2. Grades shall be set by the approved engineering drawings and established in the field by the Contractor. Thorough!~ prepare and compact the sub grade as specified in Section 02201.

The contractor shall secure access to clean potable "Water adjacent to the job site for purposes of cleaning tools, adjusting mixtures and pressure washing the sutiace prior to sealing.
Place 4-inches minimum of aggregate base conforming to Section 309 ofVDOT Specifications.
Formwork shall be installed according to drawings. Slab thickness shall be 4 inches minimum for pedestrian uses only, or 6 inches minimum for all others. (See dravdng # R-2.0from Arlington County Construction Standards and Specffications.)
Place any specified reinforcement (if needed) as designated on construction drawings.
Pour the concrete in conformance with Section 504 of the VDOT Specifications. The amount of concrete poured at one time shall be limited, based on variables such as weather, temperature,

5.4 Concrete sidewalk installation can be ada_pted to site constraints. This sidewa lk gradually narrows to 4.5 feet to avoid tree roots. Note that the border dimension stays constant, however.
5.5 Attention to details is critical. Creative border treatments are encouraged around embedded objects.

mix and crew strength, to allow adequate t ime for proper floating, edging and jointing while maintaining sufficient plasticity for texture imprinting.
3.8. Control and/or expansion joints shall be provided in accordance with the design drawings and guidelines established by tile American Concrete Institute (AC1). Joints shall be constructed at intervals of no more than 40 feet, except for closures, but a slab shall not be less than 6 feet in length. The contractor shall advise and work with the project engjneer and/or designer to determine the best locations for joints to minimize the effects of cracking. Transverse control joints shall be used on panel lengths of 10ft. or more and shall be smv-cut at the mid-point.
3.9. Separate slabs by transverse expansion joint filler (See sec. 2.6 "Joint Filler) for the full width of the slab, extending from the bottom of the s lab to within one-quarter (1 /4) inch of its top surface. Oivide th e s lah between expansion joints into blocks in accordance with design parameters. (.';ee sec. 1.5A ';Design ") \\iherc s labs arc more than ? -fc1..1. in width, they shall be scored longitudinally to secure uniform blocks approximately square. Extend traverse and longitudinal scoring to at least 1/3 of the depth of the concrete slab. Scoring of transverse and longitudinal joints may be done with trowels, fmishing and edging tools or by other means approved by the Engineer.
3.1 0. Concrete shall be placed and screeded to the finishOO grade and floated to a uniform surface using standard finishing techniques. Entire surface should be given a ~mooth troweled finish prior to finishing.
3.11. Texture shall be applied while concrete is still in the pia ic stage of set. All fields will be finished with a light or medium broom finish, perpendicular lo the major direction of traffic. Broom finishes should be applied with as few brush strokes as possible, to minim..ize overlaps and excessive surface roughness.
3.12. Borders will be troweled using an edger/groover tool of specffied dimensions in accordance with design parameters. (See sec. 1.5B-a "Design "') .
3.13. \\!here sidewalks are constructed adjacent to .J?ermanent structures or other rigid construction on one side and curb on the other, extend an expansion joint of pre-molded material only a long back at curb and place for the full depth Q.f the slab. Place a pre-molded expansion joint berween the sidewalk and adjacent curb at all crosswalks both public and private. Fasten pre-molded expaQSiun joint filler to prevent disp lacement.
3.14. Where sidewalk is constructed in conjunction with adjacent curb, the expansion joints in the curb and sidewalk shall coincide. Where such construction is adjacent to existing curb, the expansion joints shall, if practicable,. coincide. Prior to placing concrete around any permanent structure, place pre-molded expansion joint material around such structure for the full depth of the sidewalk.
3.15. Where e.xisting structures, such as light standards , poles, fire hydrants, etc., are within the limits of the s idc"Walk area, place pre-molded expans ion joint around the structure for the full depth of the concrete.
3.16. The surface rolerance oftbe completed work shall be as specified in Section 316 of the VDOT Specifications.
PART 4- MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT [for CJP projects only[.
4.1 Concrete s idewalks shall be measured to the width shown on the plans, regardless of the actual dimension constructed, unless otherwise approved by the Engineer, times its actual length.
