The Forum’s mission is to provide audiences in St. Thomas with the opportunity to experience live, high-quality programs featuring music, theater, film, dance

and literature. These productions would not be possible without the sponsorship of the Forum. To help underwrite its presentations the Forum relies on donations

from individuals and corporations, foundation grants, and the time, energy, expertise and financial commitment of its Board of Directors.

A generous grant from the Lana Vento Charitable Trust makes possible the Forum’s extensive outreach activities.

BE HERE NOWThe Andy Whitfield Story

October 15, 2016

Page 11: 2 0 1 6 / 2 0 1 7 season

An inspiring love story between television superstar, Andy Whitfield, of Starz’s “Spartacus” fame and his charismatic wife (Vashti), who together take on the most heroic role he’s ever had to play. They generously trusted Oscar® Nominated filmmaker Lilibet Foster (from St. Thomas) to follow them on their quest to heal Andy from a cancer diagnosis, in the hope that by sharing their journey, they would help to inspire others with challenges and dreams. And, it’s their courage, humor and love, that reminds the audience that the journey is more important than the destination.Profits from this event will go to Cancer Support VI. Following the film there will be a Q&A with the director and Vashti Whitfield.Hors d’oeuvres and champagne will be served, with music by the Parson’s Youth Ensemble.

Tristan und Isolde

WagnerNovember 3, 2016

e three acts of the opera are originally set, respectively, aboard ship on the Irish Sea, in Cornwall (southwestern Britain), and in Brittany

(northwestern France). e many versions of this story all pay homage to the Celtic ambiance and probable origin of the tale. Wagner’s preservation of this context emphasizes several key themes associated with ancient Celtic

culture: mysticism, knowledge of the magic arts, an evolved warrior code, and a distinctly non-Christian vision of the possibilities of the afterlife.

Featuring a Tony Award-winning performance from the host

of the The Late Late Show, James Corden, the uproarious

One Man, Two Guvnors was a runaway hit both in

London’s West End and on Broadway.

Fired from his skiffle band, Francis Henshall becomes

minder to Roscoe Crabbe, a small time East End hood, now

in Brighton to collect £6,000 from his fiancée’s dad. But

Roscoe is really his sister Rachel posing as her own dead

brother, who’s been killed by her boyfriend

Stanley Stubbers.

Holed up at The Cricketers’ Arms, the permanently

ravenous Francis spots the chance of an extra meal ticket

and takes a second job with one Stanley Stubbers, who is

hiding from the police and waiting to be re-united with

Rachel. To prevent discovery, Francis must keep his two

guvnors apart. Simple.

Sierra Leone’s Refugee All StarsFebruary 4, 2017

Page 29: 2 0 1 6 / 2 0 1 7 season

Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars have risen like a phoenix out of the ashes of war and enflamed the passions of fans across the globe with their uplifting songs of hope, faith and joy. The band is a potent example of the redeeming power of music and the ability of the human spirit to persevere through unimaginable hardship and emerge with optimism intact. From their humble beginnings in West African refugee camps Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars have performed on some of the world’s most prestigious stages and matured into one of Africa’s top touring and recording bands. The musicians that would eventually form Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars are all originally from Freetown, and they were forced to leave the capital city at various times after violent rebel attacks. Ruben Koroma and his wife Grace left Sierra Leone in 1997 and found themselves in the Kalia refugee camp near the border with Sierra Leone. When it became clear they would not be heading back to their homeland anytime soon, they joined up with guitarist Francis John Langba (aka Franco), and bassist ldrissa Bangura (aka Mallam), other musicians in the camp whom they had known before the war, to entertain their fellow refugees. After a Canadian relief agency donated two beat up electric guitars, a single microphone and a meager sound system, Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars were born. After a 10-year plus adventure that has taken them from the squalor of refugee camps to the world’s biggest stages, Africa’s most inspirational band continues to ascend. Over the decade they have evolved to become one of Africa’s most recognized bands with fans across the globe. Their albums and live shows embody and radiate the joy, passion for music and love for their fellow man that have made Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars a living testament to the resilience of the human spirit and an inspiration to hundreds of thousands of people across the globe.

This stunning production of Miller’s tragic masterpiece won

a trio of 2014 Olivier Awards including Best Revival, Best

Actor for Mark Strong (The Imitation Game; Tinker, Tailor,

Soldier, Spy) and Best Director for Ivo van Hove.

On Broadway this same production received the Tony

Award for Best Revival.

The great Arthur Miller confronts the American dream in

this dark and passionate tale. In Brooklyn, longshoreman

Eddie Carbone welcomes his Sicilian cousins to the land of

freedom. But when one of them falls for his beautiful niece,

they discover that freedom comes at a price. Eddie’s jealous

mistrust exposes a deep, unspeakable secret – one that

drives him to commit the ultimate betrayal.

Solera’s libretto takes some liberties with biblical history, and the characters other than the title role are dramatic inventions. But the story as a whole

stays close to events as they are related in Jewish scriptures: primarily Jeremiah, as well as 2 Kings, 2 Chronicles, Daniel, and the Psalms. e rst

part takes place around the destruction of the rst temple in Jerusalem in 586 B.C., with the remainder of the opera set in various locations in

the city of Babylon.

In Shakespeare’s lifetime, Italy was a land of many small city-states in constant warfare with one another, but this same country was also the cradle

of the Renaissance, with its astounding explosion of art and science. e image invoked by the story’s setting in the ancient city of Verona, then, is a beautiful but dangerous world where poetry or violence might erupt at any

moment. e Met’s new production moves the action to the 18th century.

SparkThe Classical BandApril 8, 2017

Page 41: 2 0 1 6 / 2 0 1 7 season

Spark brings an exciting new voice to the young creative classical scene. The group combines the virtuosity and precision of a classical chamber music ensemble with the power and grit of a rock band. Since 2007, this adventurous quintet has been roaming the world as the Classical Band and celebrating an eccentric mix of post-classical, minimal music and avant-garde. In 2011, the ensemble won an ECHO Klassik Award. With their ear for the unusual and the unheard, these five young musicians move effortlessly between contrasting musical worlds.Invitations at the highest level have taken the classical band to some of the world’s most renowned concert platforms, including Konzerthaus Berlin, Koiner Philharmonie, Alte Oper Frankfurt, Wiener Musikverein, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, London’s Barbican Centre, Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona, the National Concert Hall of Taipei, the Shanghai Oriental Art Center, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Rheingau Music Festival and La Folle Journee in Nantes.Spark’s radical new definition of classical music has captured people’s attention, as exemplified by the Classical Band’s appearances in jazz clubs, at rock and pop festivals - such as the Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg - and on indie open-air stages, and in Berlin’s famous techno club Berghain.Together, these five young artists conquer the stage with a motley crew of up to 40 different instruments ranging from the 10-inch sopranino recorder to the two-metre-tall subbass, from the classical piano trio line-up of violin, cello and piano to the exotic timbres of modern keyed flutes, a melodica and a slide whistle, plus spontaneous vocals.

With La Traviata, Verdi and Piave fashioned an opera from a play set in contemporary times—an exception in the composer’s long career. Dumas’s

La Dame aux Camélias was a meditation on the author’s youthful aair with the celebrated prostitute Marie Duplessis, known as a sophisticated and

well-read woman whose charms and tact far surpassed her station. e play is still staged today in its original form and exists in several lm

incarnations, most notably Greta Garbo’s Camille (1936).

Community Outreach

With each new season, the Forum seeks ways to make its events available to

the greater island community. This year the Forum is proud to offer free

student tickets to all Live HD screenings from the Metropolitan Opera and

the London National Theatre. The Forum is committed to introducing young

people to world class artists and performances through complimentary

school shows with the help of grants, administrators, teachers, and students.

In addition to the student outreach performances and Q&A sessions at the

local schools, in the 2015-2016 season the Forum hosted a Master Class

with Trio con Brio Copenhagen, who are not only acclaimed international

musicians but also educators teaching Master Classes at Yale, Rice

University and the Royal Academy in Copenhagen. It was a great success

and a once in a life time opportunity for the students. The Forum intends to

continue pursuing such fulfilling outreach opportunities.

Each year the Forum builds on relations from previous seasons. In 2014 the

Forum partnered with the St. John School of the Arts to bring music to the

students in St. John. That relationship continues to grow with two events this

season: Harmony Zhu and Spark-The Classical Band will perform on both

islands. This year the Forum will post blogs on the Students Corner page

on www.theforum.vi. The page will host a report submitted by a student from

different schools about his/her experience at a live Forum event. Perhaps

one day, one of these students will come back and perform at a Forum event

or like us Forum supporters, develop a life-long passion for music,

opera, film, and theater.
