WELCOME TO THE TRON’S SPRING SEASON FOR 2010During the last months at the Tron we have had the regional premiere of PollyStenham’s That Face, the launch of our playwriting competition, Open.Stage,sell-out performances, five star-rated shows, our fastest selling panto ever andeven a little bit of controversy... how do you follow that?

Well for starters we are collaborating with Communicado on a new and timelyproduction of Gogol’s classic satire The Government Inspector, directed byGerry Mulgrew. At the same time, I’ll be directing a new production of MartinCrimp’s brilliant play The City in the intimate space of the Changing House.

March sees us welcome the National Theatre of Scotland with tfd, a season ofplays for young people (and those just plain curious) and NTS’s acclaimedproduction of Long Gone Lonesome is also part of our annual hosting of theCeltic Connections festival. There’s a world premiere of a new thriller byDouglas Maxwell and Raspberry, Sounds of Progress’s groundbreaking musicalplay based on the life of punk legend Ian Dury, is also revived.

Upstairs in the Changing House we’ll be presenting three new pieces which will all push the boundaries – an exciting young company Flatrate with anexamination of pornography and feminism, Theatre Modo with Sick, and NickUnderwood performing in his own, very cleverly crafted show about love andloss, One Night Stand.

I’m also delighted to announce the launch this season of the Tron Theatre YoungCompany, for aspiring actors aged 18 - 25 which will culminate in a production inJune. See page 22 for more details.

And that’s all just until the end of March. We’re busier than ever right now sojoin us this Spring for some more unforgettable nights out. If you can’t get aticket for a show, just come and hang out with us in the bar!

An evening of song and story-telling in the hands ofOrcadian western swingers The Lone Star Swing Band, with novelist, playwright and musician Duncan McLean atthe helm.

An evening designed to set your toes tapping, your heartracing and your emotions running high.

Thomas Fraser (1927 - 1978) was a fisherman and crofterfrom the remote island of Burra, Shetland – and one ofScotland’s least known but most fascinating musical heroes.

Obsessed with country and the blues, Thomas mastered thestyles of his idols – Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Williams and BigBill Broonzy – and made their songs his own. A shy, retiringman, he avoided public performance. Instead, he gave awayto family and friends tapes he lovingly recorded in his croft.

Thomas laughed at the idea that the wider world mightappreciate his talent. But thirty years after his untimelydeath, those precious, fragile tapes have been reissued onseveral CDs, and his fame has spread to Nashville…

INSPECTORBY NIKOLAI GOGOL ADAPTED BY ADRIAN MITCHELL

DIRECTED BY GERRY MULGREW

Gerry Mulgrew directs this feisty adaptation of NikolaiGogol’s classic satire on bureaucracy and human vanity. Apenniless nobody from the big city arrives in a small town, where he is mistaken for the all-powerful government inspectorby its corrupt and self-serving officials. In this age of abuses ofoffice, banking crises and duck islands, The GovernmentInspector’s hilarious and vicious exposé of those in (petty)power is more timely than ever.

One of Scotland’s most respected and trailblazing theatrecompanies, Communicado presents this piece with all its wellknown brio and musical invention in a co-production with theTron Theatre. A swinging, fast-paced, very black comedy, thisstaging features a cast of ten performers, with live music playedby the company on electric balalaikas and mouth organs.

Bribes, mis-directed contracts, mis-allocation of public money, fiddled expenses. Panic. Sound familiar?

How was your day?

Clair met a famous writer called Mohammed after she thought hisdaughter had been kidnapped. He’s given her a diary. Chris couldn’tget his swipe pass to work this morning. He might lose his job. Jennyjust wants to sleep while her husband is off fighting a war but thechildren in the garden won’t be quiet.

Martin Crimp’s mysterious play about contemporary life is a funny andhaunting theatrical experience. As its three characters seduce, elude, hurt and frustrate one another, they weave a nightmarish depiction ofsuburban life that has rarely seemed so sinister or so sad.

Holding on to your virginity, getting a ringfor your pains and something to believe in,that’s what Dawn, Rob and Fawziya want.Ozzy, their loser PE teacher needs tobelieve in something too. It will all be finewhen the Miracle Man gets here. Won’t it?

The Miracle Man is a play written in Arialrather than Times New Roman if you knowwhat we mean. The characters are bright, fizzy and fast, on a journey heading for agreat big unabashed, get-it-right-up-ye finale.

Douglas Maxwell (Decky Does a Bronco,Mancub) is the writer who refuses to growup. This is what he says:My plays are for my friends. They’reintelligent people, clued up and skilled, theyjust don’t go to the theatre. Films, music, novels, sport yes of course, but theatre’s notfor them. But I keep them in mind when Iwrite because should they go to a play, I’dhope to Christ they’d go to see one of mine.
