How The Moon Was Formed

There have been several explanations

for the origin of the Moon in the past.

They include theories that the Moon

was captured by Earth's gravity, it

formed alongside Earth, or that it was

a lump of Earth that split off due to

inertia.

The moon consists of a crust, a

mantle, and a core, much like earth,

but in smaller amounts. These layers

consist mostly of iron, magnesium,

and other metals.

Moon’s Orbit

The Moon completes its orbit around the Earth in

approximately 27.3 days (a sidereal month). The Earth

and Moon orbit about their barycentre (common centre of

mass), which lies about 4700 km from Earth's centre

(about three quarters of the Earth's radius). On average,

the Moon is at a distance of about 385000 km from the

centre of the Earth, which corresponds to about 60 Earth

radii. With a mean orbital velocity of 1.023 km/s, the

Moon moves relative to the stars each hour by an amount

roughly equal to its angular diameter, or by about 0.5°.

The Moon differs from most satellites of other planets in

that its orbit is close to the plane of the ecliptic, and not to

the Earth's equatorial plane. The lunar orbit plane is

inclined to the ecliptic by about 5.1°, whereas the Moon's

spin axis is inclined by only 1.5°.

The Moons Effect On The Earth

The gravitational attraction that the Moon exerts on

Earth is the cause of tides in the sea. The tidal flow

period is synchronized to the Moon's orbit around Earth,

but the phase isn't. The tidal bulges on Earth, caused by

the Moon's gravity, are carried ahead of the apparent

position of the Moon by the Earth's rotation, in part

because of the friction of the water as it slides over the

ocean bottom and into or out of bays and estuaries. As a

result, some of the Earth's rotational momentum is

gradually being transferred to the Moon's orbital

momentum, resulting in the Moon slowly receding from

Earth at the rate of approximately 38 mm per year. At

the same time the Earth's rotation is gradually slowing,

the Earth's day thus lengthens by about 15 µs every year.

A moon landing is the arrival of a spacecraft on the surface of the Moon. This includes both

manned and unmanned (robotic) missions. The first human-made object to reach the surface of

the Moon was the Soviet Union's Luna 2 mission on 13 September 1959.[3]

The United States's

Apollo 11 was the first manned mission to land on the Moon on 20 July 1969.[4]

There have been

six manned landings (between 1969 and 1972) and numerous unmanned landings.
