The stockholders of theChina Merchants' Steamship Cumpany are Manda-rins and merchants who own all the steamship, ofthe SbtDgbae Steam Navigation Company, besidesmany other steamers. It is said to be a corporationpossessing great wealth. Tbe Manager of the Com-pany Is Tong Ken Sing, a satire of Singapore. lieis reputed to lo very rich and grasping and speakstbe English language fluently. He is spoken of as acapable and shrewd business man, who is anxiousto promote tbe commeiciat interests of the Empitoand render service to his associates.
Tbe Hongkong China Mail of September 30thcopies the following from the Shangbae Mercury of arecent date :
"Tbe China Merchants' Steam Company aresboot to run steamers from Canton to the SandwichIslands to carry emigrants. The ilochung is goingsoutu very snowy to run on tnat lino. Mr. longKen Sing has also purchased the Benclutha, thevery fine iron ship lately ashore at Cbefoo. She isto be lengthened eightv feet, and orders hate beensent borne to Messrs. Thomson & Co., who built theLew engines for the Ilwai-Vue- n and are buildingthose for tbe Taku. She is intended to steam at anaverage of ten knots. Tbe Benclutha was built inGlasgow in 1S7C, is classed 100, A 1 at Lloyds, hav-ing 11 veirs to run. She is a bark of 1,011. tonsgross. In all probability she will be fitted up for thepassenger trade between Canton and Honolulu andSan Francisco."
On the samo topic advance sheets of the CelestialEmpire of October 1st throws some light. Tbe Cityof Pekiog silled September 30th. On tbe dsvfollowing tbe Celestial Empire, discussing tbe rela-tionship between China and other countries, said:"There are timet when nations, like individuals, cannot discuss some questions calmly and profitably. And though the letter of our New Vork correspon-dent shows that the e agitation is fastdying out in America, where, he says, the popularsentiment is against race proscription of all kinds ;and though many of tbe Australian colonists wouldgladly welcome Chinese labor, there is no doubttbat, in those countries at least, the immigration ofChinese must be conducted slowly and cautiously. While tbe white and yellow races meet as competitors, opposition, and sometimes violence, arelikely to ensue ; and beautiful as free labor and per-sonal freedom may be admitted to be in the abstract, hostility to tbe Chinese will not be easily or quicklyorercome. Theso are facts, and in discussing greatquestions facts must be considered. It it not less afact, however, that where Chinese labor is mostwanted, to far from its competing with white labor,it allows such labor to be nted to tbe most directadvantage and to the greatest profit. Tbe race of".equatorial Englishmen," which has been foretold, will not exitt In the near future; and it may be said, without fear of contradiction, that whereier bardmanual work bos to be performed in tropical or
countries, it mast be done by people adaptedto the conditions of such latitudes. For such pur-poses tbe Chinese have proved themselves the mostsuitable and emcient. No one will deny tbem thevirtues of industry, frugality and peaceableness ; andindeed, tbe increasing demand for their services is thebest proof of their value and usefulness."
The same paper mentions that the theory of theancient empire is against granting its children per-mission to seek their fortunes abroad, but acknow-ledges that the .Chinese do not soruple to npset hon-ored customs and depart from the beaten lines of tbeConstitution. Tacitly at first and, latterly with per-fect openness, she sanctioned, if she did not encourageemigration. Going farther into details the CelestialEmpire says :
' The conditions of the emigration the arrango-men- tt
and accommodation provided for the emigrantsin going to and returning from their foreign service
are probably its most important feature. It is apainful but too fact that Chinese emi-grants bave sometimes been treated on board vesselsin a manner which recalls the horrors of the middlepassage. II ow the Chinese Government, which hasmade tbe most careful provisions in tbe isle trestyfor tbe freedom and good treatment of emigrants, will endeavor to insure tbe arrangements of the pas-sage necessary for health and comfort remains to beseeen ; but one of the most reasonable solutions ofthe difficulty would be tbat the emigration shouldtake place in vessels flying the Dragon Sag, and overwhich the Government might exercise absolute con-trol. Possibly in no other way would the objectionsbe orercome ; and tbe introduction of tome suchclause Into the several treaties combined with whatotSer precautions might be desirable as, for in-
stance, tbe supervision of the custom might lead toa complete and satisfactory arrangement with allconcerned. We need not now, however, enter intothat part of tbe question. We htte been lead intothese remark! by tbe announcement of tbe departureof the China Merchants' steamer Hoehunr, whichleaves in a few days for Canton, whereThe willreceive emigrants for Honolulu. We may give, on afuture occasion, tome particulars of tbe SandwichIslands bearing upon their commercial future andrelationship to China. For the present we netd onlysay that the sugar and other plantations promise torender tbem a most valuable possession; and tbatChinese labor is much appreciated and sought afterto develop their resources.
a aW this experiment is successful, as U promises to
be, a new and profitable sphere will be added to theCompany's operations, which may be extended In asimilar way to many other places.'
A letter from C. C. Moreno to William Simonthe intelligence by tbe newspapers. Mr.
Moreno taji t" I will tend by this mail a letter to be published
in tba N. Y. Herald, addressed to Hon. Mr. Evartt,Secretary of State, with tbe hope that this time therewill be no more failure. I have induced tbe ChineseGovernment to establish a new line cf steamers fromCanton to Honolulu, and I bare been appointedspecial agent to open'negotiaioss with the King andGover&meot of tbe Sandwich Islands for commercialIntercourse, bet so coolie trade whatever. AnyChinaman who desires to emigrate must pay bit pat-ssg- e
just as tba Irish emigrants do. Emigrationmust be purely and simply free. Thit line itthe Chinese Merchants' Steam Navigation Company
tbe Government itself and will be soon extendedto San Fiascitco, bnt only for tbe purpose of trade. If any Chinaman in California it unable to pay hispassage borne be will be taken back free.
Wheat and flour from California are in great de-mand is the north of China, and steam mills havebeta established in the panic dUlria. Tbe Govern-ment Intends to have this line of steamers for thetrade, and to avoid famine ealamitiet by baring
greet depots of wheat and flour on hand. The Paci-fic Mail tteamert cannot perform tbit service for wantof proper stations in tbe north of China. The PacificMail and 0. and 0. steamers go to Hongkong in thesouth, and bave so branches at Shangbae."
We find the foregoing in the San Francisco"Bulletin" oftho 29th ulto., to which wedesire to call the especial attention of ourpeople. It is noteworthy from the articlerefered to, that the Chinese have at lastawakened to tho importance of extending theircommercial relations with the outside world. To this end, as incidentally remarked in ourissue of last week, a new impetus has beengiven to the movement by the establishmentof a steamship trade direct between China andthese Islands. We say establishment, becausewe have bad not only the rumor but the fact, demonstrated by the presence of the pioneersteamship of the line in our harbor last week, the Hochung from Warapoa, with 451 Chinesepassengers for these Islands. It may be wellto observe just here that tho-15- passengersmentioned above are not all common laborers. They consist of mechanics embracing almostall branches ofbusincBB, nor are they of theclass who come ns paupers, but all paid theirpassage. It will also be observed from thoarticle we havo quoted that the China Mer-
chants' Steamship Navigation Company is anorganization composed of wealthy merchantsresident in China, who have carefully calcu-
lated all the contingencies of tho new under, taking, that is the establishment of a steam-
ship line for direct trade between China andthese Islands, with the ultimate purpose ofextending the line to San Francisco.
From tbe extract of a letter of C. 0. Moreno,Esq., the accredited agent of the China Merchants' Steamship Navigation Company, itappears that the company he represents, which is a private corporation, composed ofwealthy Chinamen residents of the Empire ofChina, whose Board of Directors have carefullyexamined all the facts connected with the en-
terprise of establishing direct trade betweenChina and this Kingdom in tho first instance, and as an assurance of their faith in the pro-
ject, have sent the a?ant courier of their newline, in the shape of the Hochung to this portwith a passenger list'of 451 Chinese. Thisbeing the true state of the case, it is evidentthat the steamship company has fully maturedits plans after due deliberation. The stock-
holders are men of immense wealth, and areshrewd, experienced business men, who see inthe establishment of direct trade between Ho-
nolulu and China a fair business venture, andhave determined to test their judgment by thestern logic of facts. This new lino ofsteamers is no ad captandum affair but anaccomplished fact, the best proof of which isfound in sending the Hochung" as the pioneership of the new line.
Direct trade between China and these Is-
lands will be a direct and positive benefit tothis Kingdom in a thousand and one differentways, and therefore, we rejoice at the pros-
pect of such a commercial as well as sensiblearrangement, because wo desire to see thebusiness prospects of these Islands enchanced. We earnestly trust therefore, that sound wis-
dom may guide the councils of His Majesty inthe negotiations with Mr. Moreno, the specialagent of the steamship company, in thearrangement of tho most feasible plan to securedirect trade with China and this Kingdom, and the proper regulation of Chinese emigra-tion to these Islands. This is not the time tosufTer narrow views of state policy to controlthe action of Government, but rather the honrwhen liberal and enligtened principles of state-dra- ft
should govern those whose duty it is toguard the interests of this little Kingdom. Itshould be born in mind that the establishmentof direct trade with any foreign nation will bea vaBt benefit to the revenues of this Kingdom, and thercforo every possible facility should begranted by this country to induce such directtrade. As Mr. Moreno is tho only and author-
ized agent of the company proposing to estab-
lish this direct trade, wo trust that His Maj-
esty and advisers will act in a liberal spirittowards him, and that his mission may provea Buccess, because upon such a result dependsin a great measure the futuro prosperity ofthese Islands. The establishment of a directline of steamers between China and Honoluluand its ultimate extension to San Francisco, will be a benefit to our people in a doubleratio, because it will bring down to a minimumboth freight and passenger charges betweenHonolulu and San Francisco, besides it willopen up a market for all that can bo producedon these fertile Islands and thus insure pros-perity.
To the Editor of Uu IUwaiian Gaicttt :Hoxoluxu, II. I.. Norember 21st, 1879.
Sib: I understand that the Captain of the steamerHochung, under the Chinese nag, has represented toseveral persons since his arrival here, that I am not theauthorised agent of tbe China Merchants' SteamshipNavigation Company, but on the contrary, that Mr. FanYau KU a Chinese passenger by the Uochuug, now here,Is the only authorised agent of the aforesaid company.

Tue riEtLTn orTnE Cirr. We are pleased tostate that the typhoid fever and measles bavcen-tlre- lv
disappeared, slid tbe health ot tbe city isgenerally very good. The bleb trade winds whichwe have hsd lately and tbe cool nights hare nnrifiedtbe atmosphere, and thereby restored the health ofthe city, wtilcb is a blessed relict Irom the tear arilanxiety of a few weeks back which so harassedtbe people.
3J The weather during four days of last weekwas unusually boisterous in tbis city and vicinity. It was not confined to Ho&olnlu, as we learn. Itextended to the other Islands where it was evenworse than here, very littles rain hut considerablewind. Referred to the Pinafore scribbler of theAdrcriUer for corroboration or refntatlon as thespirit ot his "Uncles, Aunts and Cousins" maydictate.
Chop Prospects. By our advices from the otherIslands we learn that the crop prospects for thepiantcs nrver were more encouraging than at tbeprecnt moment This will be good news forevervbodr on tbe Islands, because all are InterestedIn the success nf the crops, frugar will begin tocome in in large quantities for trans shipment, andnew life will be Infused Into business circles.

CruNGE or COMMiWDEiis. Capt. E. D. Cranghas succeeded Capt. Bates In command oft be coast-ing steamer Lebua. Tbe new Captain is well andfavorably known In this community. We haveheard qnlte a number of persons expressing theirregret at the removal of Capt. Bates, who has madehimself very popuUr with tbctravelingcommnnltv,by his aflahle and courteous manner, and gentle-manly deportment. He v. Ill certainly be greatlymissed by tbe patrons of the Lchua.

A Bcsr Dit. As Is usual on steamer day, lastMonday was a busy day. The steamer Australiaput lu an appearance off the harbor at an early houron Monday morning, w hich caused our people to be-st-ir
themselves, especially those persons who al-
ways wait till the eleventh boor to transact theirbusiness. Those who always take time by the forelock were as usual serene, while thewere fnssing, fnmlnsr. fretting, and tumbling overeverybody, to be In time with tbe business, whichthey could just as well have had ready like otherfolks a week or at least three days ago.

Mcsicat, nn.L Association. It will be seen byreference to tbe advertisement of the secretary ofthe above association in another column, that thework of completing the organization for tbe pur-
pose of erecting a public hall In this city Is beingcarried forward In a business like manner. We haverepeatedly called attention to this much needed Im-provement, and will therefore onlyadd, that wehope those who can spare the funds will not hesi-tate to come forward with liberality and subscribeto the capital stock of this association. Tbe objectis a praiseworthy one and the stock cannot help butpay with proper and judicious management.
Kiucei. We understand that Miss Cummtngs, the Scotch traveler, whose arrival bas alreadybeen noticed In our local papers, has lately retnrni d
from arisltlothe Crater of Kllauca, w filch she foundinlersely excited, during a visit thereof one week. While there she succeeded In painting several viewsof this grand crater, which are highly spoken of bythose who have seen tbem. It Is not often thatartists In their visits to Hawaii are so favored witha brilliant display as was Miss C. We understandthat this crater hat, during tbe stormy period oftwo months, been alternately active and dormant, disappointing some and gratifying others of tbevisitors.
As EnitOTt Cosbected. We find we were Inerror In stating In our issue of last week, that theChinese gentleman Mr. Fan Yau Ki who came apassenger by the Hochung from China, was anaccredited ambassador to tbla Government, Wethought we might risk it for once to make thestatement from the AdnrtUar, the rrffoWpar txcA-Jt- na
organ, but we were relying upon tbe mo6t un-reliable of all sources of information. We mizhthave known better than to make a statement, ex-
pecting It to be true, from that paper, and theiefore.make hasle to correct an unwitting blunder, withthe promise that we will abandon once and forever, relying upon tbe rdlaliU organ for correct Informa-tion upon any subject.
Jcdicul Condemnation. We learn that theSupreme Court of this Kingdom delivered Its deci-
sion on Monday tbe 2itb Inst, In tbe matter of thelibel ot the Hawaiian bark KalaLaua, giving lodg-ment ot condemnation ofthe bark as prayed In tbelibel. Tbe charge was smuggling opium into tbisKingdom. It will be remembered that this is thesame vessel which was condemned In 1ST0 or 1S77for a similar offence. She was then called tbe
Mary Belle Roberts." Tbe then owners of the" Mary Belle Roberts " compromised with tbe
a stated sum and she was released. She was afterward put under the Hawaiian flag andher name changed to tbe Kalakaua. Her presentowners reside In Ssn Francisco, as we are advised.
The tTBADE with Hawail The New York Com-
mercial Bulletin or October 17th thinks that tbestatistics of trade with Hawaii show that It Is wellworth preserving. California grocers, hardwaredealers, distillers, dry goods houses, tobacco manu-facturers and flour merchants, all bare a more orless lucrative market lor their goods, which wouldbe for tbe most part closed against them but fortbe admission of about the only two products theIslands have to dispose of sugar and rice. Therecan be no worse diss of legislation than that pro-posed by the opponents of tbe reciprocity treaty. We bavealreadr enooili ofthe snirit or avariciousand Intolerable monopoly iu this country; hencethe Hawaiian treaty ought to stand, if only to marktbe line beyssd which monopoly or protectionmust not be permitted to go.
Late Foreign News.By the arrival ofthe steamer Australia ou Mon-
day morning last, tbe 24th Inst, we havefiles of New Zealand papers down to tbe 11thInst. The news Is very meager. The followingsynopsis embraces all the news to the 11th lust ofa general character:
London, Nov. Sth. The Irish landlords hareorganized a defence leagne, and arc endeavoring toprove, through tbe Press and public meetings, thattbe agricultural distress Is greatly exaggerated forpolitical purposes.
The seditious and Incendiary language of theHome Rulers is can6ing serious agrarian outrages, and in many districts there Is a system ol intimida-tion.
London, Nov. 8th. Sir Garnet Wnlseley has goneto Secuenl's couutry, and notified that he will makewar against him If be refuses to submit.
Calcutta, Nov. Sth. The British forces at Jellala-ba-
and Cabul have joined bauds, and arc holdingcommunication.
Sydney, Nov. 10th. The Catholic Arcbhishnpliaspublicly denounced the new Education Bill, liken-ing it tp the ancient instrument of torture calledtbe scavctger's dangbter.
The anniversary ol the Prince of Wales' birthdaywas observed as a public holiday to day. There wasan enormous attendance an he exhibition, where ademonstration took place of the Trade and Friend-ly societies.
There Is a rnmor from the Colonies, but whethernellantbentlcated or not wccannolsay.tbat Cornelltbe Republican candidate for Governor ot the Stateof New Fork has been elected. This result was anti-cipated owing to the split In the Democratic ranks, and as this result will ouly intcntlf) the bitter feudthere is no doubt of the State going Republican inISbO for President. Tiiaen might as ell hang upbis political fiddle as there is no chance for him In1SS0. With the loss orthe great State ol New Yorkby tbe Demociats, they do not stand a ghost ot achance, and If Geu'l Grunt should be the Republi-can candidate be will sneep the country fromMaine to California.
CAUTION Ttrp PUBLICTo Bvold Imposition, pnrcbucrs of WalLhtm Watches
will observe that every geuumewatcb, whether gold orsilver, bears oar trade mark on both case and movement.
Gold cases are stamped "A. Co." nod guaranteecertificates accompany tbeun Silver cases are stamped"Am. Watch Co., Waltbam, Mass , Merlin g Hlver," andare accompanied bj guarantee certificates, signed II. E.llobuins. Treasurer. I be name WaHliam" la plainlyengraved upon all movements. Irrespective of either
marks. This caution Is rendered necessary by reason of the fact
that onr cases are frequently serrated from oar move-ments and put Into worthless movements of other makers, and vice verta, thus affecting Injuriously the performanceof the watches and vitiating our guarantee, which Is
to coer only our complete watches wholly madeby us. It Li necessary, also, because It Is so notonoui asto be a public scandal, that there Is great fiaud In themetal quality of both cold and silver cases as cow gene-rally sold. We hve demonstrated by frequent assaysthat many gold and silver cates offered In the market aredebased from from 10 to SO per cent from the qualitythey assume to be. This Is a fraud npon the purchaser, audaccounts for the low price at which such cased watcheshave been sold.
We take this occasion to announce that we haveentirely remodelled the very popular grades of full
plate movements, known by the marks ' Wm. EHerry"Apple ton, Tracy k Co , Waltbam Watch (o ,P. S.IJartlelt," and " Broadway," glvlug to them not ouly ahighly Improved appearance, but great additional value. We embody tn them sucli of the best results of our expe-rience and study fir twenty years as can be useful In thispopu'ar form of watch. We give these new model watchesspecial recommendation to all who look for good per-formance and solid excellence at moderate cost. Thealterations have been made with the view of pleasingpractical watch maker, as well as watch wearers.
We avail ourselves, too, of this occasion to warn tbepublic against cheap watches. The superiority ofWallham goods, in all grades. Is now so generally ac-knowledged that our competltors, Swiss and American, seem to have uo resource but 10 present the attraction oflow price. Their goods being Inferior to .urs, they haveto sell them for what tliey can get. Times are hard, andpeople generally not knowing a good watch from a badone, verr often allow a small price to decide them. Wil-liam Morri. the emhient JEnglish Lecturer on Art andLabor Topics, In a recent lecture dellrered before the
Trades Guild," savs :" I know that the public in general are set upon having
things cheap, belug so Ignorant that they do not knowwhen they get tbem nasty, also so Ignoratit that theyneither know nor care whether thry give a man his due.I know that tbe manufacturers, 'so called are so set oncarrying out competition to Its utmost, competition ofcheapness, not of excellence, that they meet the bargainhunters half way, and cheerfully furnish them with nasty
ares at the cheap price they are asked fur, br means ofwhat can he nailed by no prettier name than fraud."
Wo are much mistaken if this is what the public want'or expects, of ui, at least Good watches cannot be madewhen neither workman nor employer has pride In his oc-
cupation; Interest and pleasure In tbe work are bothnaming, and both are essential In good watch making.Low price, especially In watches, vuant low quality, withlow ptrformanu and high rrpairt.
Our mission was. and our business Is. to make goodwatches, whatever the cost ; holding firmly to this elnglepurpose, w e have seen laiprof ement in qunllty and reduclion In cost, by means of discoveries and Improvements lumachinery aud by natural causes, go steadily on together, until we can truly say, Waltbam Watches In their re-spective grades, are the best watches made; and as to tnelower grades, they are within the reach of everybodywho earns wages Our prices are as low as tney ought tobe, and as low as they will be. Watche caunot be madetor nothlog, even by machinery. We say to the public, buy a good watch while sou are about It, and pay n properprice for It. The more you pay an honest dealer tbe btter satisfied you will be In tbe end ; don't be deceived bycheapness quality descends faster than price
