Abstract

CA-SuperProject is an IBM computer software package designed to help project managers plan, organize, and manage tasks and resources to accomplish a defined objective. This report is designed to give an overview of CA-SuperProject and its capabilities as well as to compare this software package to the Macintosh version of Microsoft Project 3.0 in conjunction with the Moncrief Radiation Center Parking Garage project. This report should also be considered as a complimentary report with the Microsoft Project 3.0 report written by Dirk Sylvester and Jeff Thompson. The key difference associated between the two software packages lies in the choice and preference of views and options according to a company's (or person's) computer system available.

Background and Description

CA-SuperProject is designed to help project managers plan and carry out successful projects. SuperProject is very similar to Microsoft Project 3.0 on the Macintosh but with a little more versatility in the graphical and textual views. Most companies would base their decision between the two on their existing computer system or on their preferences and needs.

Critical Path Method (CPM, is the method of calculating the critical path, or the longest path through the project whereby the project's finish will be delayed if any task along that path either slips or runs late. Program Evaluation Review Technique (PERT) shows the task dependency relationships for the project. Basically, the PERT chart is a network flow representation linking tasks together and producing a critical path in box style views.

CA-SuperProject uses the Gantt Chart and the PERT chart as the two main views along with other features to display graphics and charts for quick and easy project summaries to communicate a project's needs daily.

Initial Analysis

The primary step in evaluation of IBM's software package was to read the User's Guide and the Reference Manual. The interpretation and analysis of CA-SuperProject with respect to the Moncrief Radiation Center Parking Garage could not be completely evaluated until the Microsoft Project 3.0's version was understood. This may be cause for some bias toward one system over the other in certain aspects. The next stage was the data entry followed by task linking and project datelines. The Gantt chart analysis using IBM followed next with its unusual difference from the Macintosh version. Naturally, an analysis of the PERT chart followed with some .added features on the IBM version compared to the Macintosh package. Project summaries and a variety of reports followed with a conclusion giving the basic differences and similarities between the two software packages.

Task Entry Analysis

The task entry forms for CA-SuperProject and Microsoft Project 3.0 are similar in logic but different in format. See appendices A-i through A-12 for IBM's version and B-i through B-4 for Macintosh's version. Each outline sheet printed tasks with only short abbreviations along with numerically ordered task identifications. Scheduled and Finish dates were also on the reports. However, on the IBM CA-SuperProject, no predecessors were included but the program did have task status listings (appendix A-i through A-4) and space for detailed descriptions of the tasks (appendix A-9 through A-12). The linking of tasks is done by indicating finish-to-start, start-to-start, and finish-to-finish links which is a similar linking process for both programs but is formatted differently for each program.

With a finish-to-start (FS) link, one task must finish before the next tasks starts. In a start-to-start (SS) link, the successor task can start at the same time or later than its predecessor, but not earlier. In a finish-to-finish (FF) link, a successor task can finish at the same time as its predecessor or later, but not earlier. Microsoft's task report has a column for the predecessor links while IBM's task report does not include these links except for linking arrows on the Gantt chart (appendix C-i through C-3), which can sometimes get confusing. Entering these task data values becomes very confusing when switching from one package to the next. Microsoft Project 3.0 links by predecessors as if saying, "This predecessor is a finish-to-start link to that successor," while CA-SuperProject reverses this procedure as if rewording the saying to "that successor is linked to this predecessor by a finish-to-start." It was even difficult to sort out IBM's task links with a copy of the task links given by Microsoft Project 3.0's task report.

Gantt Chart Analysis

The Gantt charts of both software programs were similar in logic, duration, and task linkage (see appendix C,D,E, & F). Both programs evaluated the same critical path of 114 days. On the CA-SuperProject package, however, the first entry must be the complete project for which all following tasks are associated. This entry will record a summary in bar form of all associated tasks underneath it, adding up task durations as they are entered giving the project duration a total of 114 days (appendix C-i: the top bar). The Gantt charts remained similar except for the task linking arrows and the different task descriptions across the top. The IBM version, however, seemed to be more readable in small print than the Macintosh version. See appendix C through appendix F for the differences among versions. Also included are the critical path Gantt charts (appendices D & F) which show the same similarities and differences as the regular Gantt charts.

PERT Chart Analysis

The PERT charts of both the IBM CA-SuperProject and the Macintosh Microsoft Project 3.0 are similar in critical path but very different in format (appendix G through H). The id boxes are automatically arranged on the IBM and cannot be repositioned for clarity like the Macintosh package does. Microsoft Project 3.0 will automatically calculate the id boxes in numerical order the first time but will let the user reposition the boxes for better clarity (see appendix H-i). CA-SuperProject, unlike Microsoft Project 3.0, ties all tasks without successors to a final project box, which is the project end (see appendix G-2). This box is titled P3 which is the project end date, or it can be the start of a new project that will not start until this project is completed. In both cases, the PERT philosophy remains the same except that IBM's PERT view seems to adhere to wall chart print outs only while the Macintosh's view is more adaptable for quick, accessible print outs.

Resource Analysis

Both resource reports for the two software packages are fairly the same with respect to graphic interpretation. See appendix I for IBM's resource views and appendix J for Macintosh's resource views. Both programs illustrate resource allocations and alert users to resource overallocations. They both have similar responses to the compensation of an overallocated resource. Microsoft Project 3.0's resource report seems more detailed than CA-SuperProject's resource report (see appendix J-1 vs. Appendix I-i through 1-2). On IBM's report (appendix I-i), there is a column for priority level, which comes handy when assigning resource needs according to task importance. This feature has a level entry from 1 to 999 to give greater importance to one task over another in the event a resource conflict arises. The higher the number, the more important a tasks completion is. With this exception of priority leveling, both programs are basically similar in their resource reporting methods.

Conclusion

Both the IBM CA-SuperProject and the Macintosh Microsoft Project 3.0 use similar functions in the project management business. Each have different features in some sense but both logically reflect upon each other. (See appendices K,L,M,&N for differences and similarities in outlines, summaries, and calendar reports.) The major focus for decision between the two would be the availability of the computer system. One important advantage with IBM is its worldwide compatibility and the wide range of availability of the IBM machines in printing and graphing shops. Macintosh is limited in its plotter capabilities whereas IBM has available plotting in most all graphical printing companies. The IBM version also seems to allow more report views to choose from with options to include or exclude certain details on different reports. IBM also has beginner modes with beginner reports which are graphically easier to understand. Expert modes and views are also available.

In conclusion, IBM CA-SuperProject and Macintosh Microsoft Project 3.0 are equally comparable given all criteria. Personal choice is the final judge in usage of one over the other. Someone may like the task linkage system of arrows on IBM's Gantt chart better than the predecessor column on Macintosh's task report, or vice versa. All other applications and reporting procedures can also be compared with a company's special needs. Either way, project management is much more efficient and better communicated or comprehended through the use of software packages like CA-SuperProject and Microsoft Project 3.0.
