I CAN’T STOP and chat for long... if I said we were busy it wouldbe a hopeless understatement. If the kit car industry has aprime time of the year, boy, are we in the middle of it.

In the run up to the recent Stoneleigh Show, I found myselfediting John Dicken’s fab new book on electrics and alsomaking sure he said the right things while helping to oversee abrand new DVD we’re involved with, dealing with fibreglass.

Then there was Stoneleigh, then our very own CKC/Omex TrackDay. Features Ed Wilkins hasn’t been dawdling either, involved inall these and also acting as team manager for a pair of carsentered in the Guild of Motor Endurance 6-hour event recently.

Looking forward, we are rapidly approaching the GoodwoodFestival Of Speed, where we have a large stand and try tospread the kit car word to a new audience. Wilkins is thenstraight off to the Le Mans Classic the weekend after and...well it makes me dizzy just trying to keep up.

And what’s pleasing is that it’s not just us busy.Features Ed Wilkins has called severalof the industry’s key players andfound that many are dealing withorder books that are in rude health.I’m not going to pretend it’s allroses out there, but our quick pollis good news that reflects thelevel of renewed enthusiasmwe are witnessing when wemeet you at shows.

Right, must dash!

FIRST DRIVE GKD Legend

IT’S AN ODD colour scheme, isn’t it? GKD’s

latest Legend demonstrator has been on

the show circuit since the Exeter show

last November and quickly acquired the

nickname “the one in the funny colours.”

It’s not catchy, but it does at least mean

that everyone knows which sevenesque

roadster you’re talking about.

Actually, there is a logic behind GKD’s

decision to paint its demonstrator

turquoise, purple and red. Those are the

colours that signify BMW’s M division. On

GKD’s Legend may look familiar, but it hides a secret – it’s

sevenesque roadster to adopt modern BMW donor

components. Adam Wilkins drove it to see how it stacks up

against more familiar Ford based offerings.

the Legend, it highlights that the car is

based on the 3-series. Since this is the

first sevenesque roadster to use a single

BMW donor, it’s little wonder that GKD

wants to shout loudly about it and there’s

no doubting that this colour scheme is

loud! Perhaps the nickname should have

been “the BMW based one.”

If you don’t allow yourself be distracted

by the colour, and the Legend appears to

be a good looking car (a quality that was

more obviously apparent with the first

white demonstrator). The proportions and

detailing comply strictly with convention,

but the lack of bravery in the styling has

resulted in an appealing shape. The only

detractor is the position of the headlights.

They were raised for the IVA test to allow

the indicators to comply with the regs. I’d

rather see lower slung headlights and the

indicators relocated to the nose.

Otherwise, the car is pretty much as we

described back in our July 2009 issue;

this time, we’re back for an exclusive first

A PRETTY LITTLE Reliant based Liege isalways a charming sight, and this one isowned by Paul Wheatley who completedthe build in 2002. It’s his second kit car, having previously built a Dutton.

Together with another Liege owner, Paulentered the Guild of Motor Endurance 6-hour event at Mallory Park a couple ofyears ago and, despite a gearbox failure, the team finished fifth overall. They werethe highest rated of the kit car teams. Theconditions were monsoon-like and Paul’sco-driver was his son who, at the time, hadnever driven a rear-wheel-drive car. Hewas very quickly on the pace to contributeto the overall finishing position.

Although the Liege is now officially outof production, some customers have

RON MERCER HAS owned his Westfield ZEifor about a year – and it’s a very rare sightin the UK. It was put together in 1995 and, like all ZEis, it was factory built. It was aone-owner car with 22,000 miles on theclock and, since Ron bought it, he hasswapped the full windscreen for classicaeroscreens. He has also invested in a setof Toyo R888 semi slicks for track day use.

The most striking feature of early ZEisis the unusual front wings. They’re like amix of clamshell wings and the fuller styleones you’d see on a traditional roadster. These were fitted to keep the front wheels

within the bodywork to comply withcontemporary European regulations.Around 250 ZEi models were built, mostof them going to mainland Europe. It wasintroduced in 1992 with a Ford Zetecengine (which continued to 2000).

READER’S CAR James Warner’s WR4

WE’RE GETTING USED to thesecaged/exoskeletal cars these days. They’re a welcome addition to the kit carscene, ushering in a new sub-genre in thesame way that bike-engined kit cars really

took off a decade ago. But there are facts about the car you

see here that are worth highlighting. Forstarters, the builder, James Warner, hasnot simply gone out and bought a kit from

an established manufacturer – instead hehas sat down and designed and built theWR4 at home, as a one-off. Next, he builtit in a single garage with no light or power, having to run an extension cable from hishouse – Nothing that heroic about that, you might think, but James didn’t needelectricity just to power a drill, but ratherto fabricate and weld the completechassis, create a car and then spray thechassis... all in a single garage. That’s agood effort. And finally I want you toremember one other vital fact aboutJames’ creation. His car is not a replicaand hasn’t been inspired by any other kitcar. When he began designing the WR4on his computer, there wasn’t a singlecompany within the scene offeringanything of this type (Neither SDR or MEVwere on the market). Only the Arial Atomwas available, and although the exposedchassis rails may have been aninspiration, James’ WR4 is certainly noreplica.

So when James pushes the car out ofthe garage and I watch him drive it to thephoto location, where we spend the next

Last month we followed the build of James Warner’s one-offcaged car. This month we’ve been to see the finishedarticle and are hoping it won’t remain a one-off for long...The editor reports.

how small the WR4 is... it really is tiny, with a chunky wheel out at each corner. But this flyweight reality (it’s just 350kgs)and diminutive size are perfectlycountered by the car’s semi-matt blackfinish and large diameter chassis railswhich give it an urban, almost militarytoughness. You’d never describe it asdinky, dainty or toy-like. There’s a realsense of purpose, almost menace here.

And of course everything is exposed. The small ‘bonnet’ is the panel on the car(with the exception of the Carbon Modscycle wings), with nothing over the engineand the sides completely bare. Up front,

few hours examining it in detail, it seemsall the more amazing that I suspect thiscould be the best looking and purestcaged car I’ve come across.

I love the almost complete lack ofbodywork, but more importantly I’mhugely impressed by the beautiful curvesof the main chassis rails, the robustdiameter of the triangulating chassistubes, and the business-like butaesthetically pleasing construction. Isuspect even James would admit that hiswelding isn’t the tidiest on the planet, butthe finished article is a joy.

Seen in the flesh, I’m surprised by just

that means the floor-mounted pedals arewonderfully exposed, as is the battery, with its kill switch just beside. The dash isas minimal as you’d expect, and the ETBDigidash is the perfect self-contained unitfor this kind of car.

The challenge for a skeletal car suchas this is that not only the bits that youmight like to show off are visible, but alsothe bits you would more normally behappy to conceal. Wiring isn’t particularlya feature I’d describe as attractive, nor isa steering column or rack. So the level offinish on these components also needs tobe considered. James’ car has an

Chris Humphrey’s bought his kit car just as the company wassold and went through a period of great uncertainty. But thatdidn’t stop him enjoying the build process and assembling acar with meticulous detailing.

CHRIS HUMPHREYS WAS in no rushwhen he began his first kit car buildin 2001. Indeed, it had taken himsome time to work up to actuallytaking the plunge and placing anorder. He’d first seen an NG TFadvert in a copy of PracticalMotorist in 1995. He obviously likedthe look of it, but a highly stressedjob in teaching meant he didn’tthink he could contemplate such amajor project.

But when a change in job in1999 saw him move from a stateschool into the private sector it waslike night and day. Of course therewas still stress, but he suddenlybegan to enjoy teaching again, andfelt inspired to take on a holiday

project that previously he couldn’thave coped with. A visit to NG’sEpsom workshops beckoned.

Owned at the time by JohnHoyle, NG outsourced the kitfabrication and had a neat unitwhere kits were made ready fordispatch and a demonstrator wasalways on hand. “Even then I wasthinking ‘how am I going to get mywife to go along with this?’”remembers Chris. A passengerride for him demonstrated that theride was better than he expected, and the quality of the end productwas superb.

And then it was the turn of hiswife, Lesley, to ride shotgun. “Shecame back with a big grin on her

Rubber chassis tape glued in place to isolate and protect

the chassis from the bodywork. It’s important to have this

isolating layer between the two surfaces.

When was the last time we featured a kit car with leaf

springs and a solid rear axle? Don’t discount either. They

work absolutely perfectly for this application.

Pin drive conversion bolted onto original studs for steel

wheels. Rear axle location also improved with addition of a

Panhard rod.

Body panels supplied in white primer gelcoat finish.

liquidation and before new owners buy the NG rights.

Chris’ son Matt tries out the NG for size. Main tub set the

very time consuming.

basic but well designed ladderframe design that works well. It

face, and she just assumed that Iwas going to do it!”

Chris didn’t really look at anyother traditional kits on themarket. Two factors weighedheavily in favour of the NG. “Tome the NG TF looked like a realcar,” he continues, “and lots ofpeople have said that to me sincethen. It was down to thegenuineness of the design. Theother factor was the whole MGBscenario. I wasn’t that keen onFords, but I did work on a lot ofBL and Leyland cars when I wasyounger and so I was very familiarwith the A and B-series engines.”

He could, however, havepossibly opted for NG Cars’ other

model, the muscular TF? “I didn’treally consider it. I thought the1800cc B-series would be perfectlyfine for me. I wanted the look of thecar – I didn’t want to go racing in it.I wanted to enjoy just driving itaround.”

Chris had already joined theNG Owners’ Club and gone alongto some club events. He likedwhat he saw, both in thefriendliness of those involved andthe quality of completed cars. Theproject was on.

Finding the donor bits was thefirst job and Chris didn’t fancybuying and stripping an old MGB.Instead he headed to one of themany MG specialists, MGB Hive, and they put together a completedonor package, including the V5from the original car. Underadvice from NG, he opted for alater steel wheeled MGB – the

slightly wider rear axle, along withhub converters, would then placethe final wire wheels perfectly inthe arches.

Chris also entrusted MGB Hivewith reconditioning the engine,

gearbox and back axle, but it still lefta lot of refurbishment on the otherbits. “They gave me lots of rustypieces, and I thought ‘my goodness, what have I started’.”

Stripping down the frontsubframe showed him how mostcomponents would go backtogether again (potentially aproblem on a pre-stripped donorpack, where you don’t know wherethings went previously). And hereplaced any service parts andthoroughly cleaned and repaintedeverything else. Apart from someSpax dampers, just abouteverything was refurbished tostandard MG specification.

But almost immediately he’dbegun the project, he was also onthe back foot. Having placed adeposit on a chassis kit, soon afterhe was informed that the company

had been sold to new owner, ImageGroup International. With acompany name that immediatelyrings alarm bells, the new operationwas run by three directors withadmirable intentions, and despite

the initial worry of the ownershipchange, the powder-coated chassisarrived on time.

It soon becomes apparent asChris chats through the buildprocess, there was no timeframe

While Tifosi may manufacture its Rana Frogeye replica, the company also

offers an ever expanding range of kit car products. Latest of these is a pre

with piping and a fluted lower section. Why? Because it can then be used to

trim a door panel or perhaps a

side panel of a typical

sevenesque kit car and

instantly give a professional

finish. The universal trim

Tiny Side Indicators

Very natty new side repeaters spotted on the SVC stand at the recent

Stoneleigh kit car show. Not only are they tiny, which in itself is quite unusual,

but they are small enough to be mounted on the side of a headlamp bowl.

This can be extremely useful

in order to meet the current

rubber mount, all you need

to do is drill the hole and fix

the tiny repeaters in place.

We like that!

JULY 2010 www.completekitcar.co.uk 77

With nothing on which to mount an interior door panel, Emlyn had to make his own framework.

Plywood door panel fits well. Once trimmed it will be perfect.

Second attempt at a dashboard has been much more successful. Pod behind steering

wheel brings gauges away from dash vents behind.

Tidy wiring and the use of multiplugs

should make life easier if it ever needs to

come out again. Finished article looks very

tidy indeed.

Good progress has been made overthe last couple of months, althoughexpensive. A set of instruments wasbought from ETB; they gave a goodprice and were delivered in just overtwo weeks. A deposit was paid toVehicle Interiors for the seats, whichwill be in blue vinyl with yellow piping. They weren’t cheap, but having had agood look at seats from variousmakers, I felt they were of goodenough quality to justify the extra.

I picked up some matching vinylfrom their stand at Stoneleigh to startthe cockpit trimming. As usual,Stoneleigh was a good show, although blooming cold! It was nice tochat to Ian on the CKC stand.

A lot of time was spent trying tofigure out how to attach the trim tothe doors. I eventually sorted it bybonding glassfibre strips to the insideof the doors and attaching angledalloy to them. The fibreboarddoorcards were then fixed usingspeedclips and stainless steel screws. The fibreboard was sealed with PVAbefore fixing. They were eventuallycovered with 3mm foam and thevinyl. Door pulls were made up usingsome old cycle brake inner cableswhich I had lying around, they seemto work OK.

I have also spent a lot of time onthe dash. I decided to have theancillary gauges directly in front ofthe driver (there was not enoughheight for the larger gauges).Thinking ahead, I realised the backsof gauges were likely to foul anydemister vents behind, so I wouldhave to bring them away from thedash. To overcome this, I made up aplywood pod to move them a coupleof inches outwards.

This pod was fitted to my Mk2

When I left this last time, we hadthe car sitting on the ground withthe engine fitted.

To recap we’ve got the first stageof the aluminium panelling finishedin powdercoat and fitted to the car.

CKC’s Running Reporters have been hardat work building their kit cars. It doesn’tget more real than this!

These are the very fancy AT Power spindless throttle bodies that Richard is using on

the Duratec engine he’s fitted in the J15. They will be controlled by a Typhoon ECU.

You can see how tight it is under the rear deck. This is the original Duratec cam cover.

Fancy Raceline items comes in a sexy crinkle finish! If Richard’s J15 goes as well as

it looks, he’s going to have a very fast car.

76 www.completekitcar.co.uk JULY 2010

RUNNING REPORTSThere will be some more to do toclose the ends of the pods, butthat can come later in the build.

Suspension, brakes, hubs, wheels are fitted and we’ve alsonow got the flexi hoses fitted andthe brakes bled. I’ve gone awayfrom a remote brake reservoir andhave fitted some new Wilwoodintegral ones. They’ll just about fitunder the front bodywork.

The car is pretty much fullyplumbed now... water, fuel, brakesand clutch are done but I’ve stillgot to solve a clutch slave feedhose issue. The Ford slave cylinderis usually fed by a plastic pipe, butthe pipe running up the chassis ismetal! I’ll have to think of asolution to join the two.

Pedals are fitted, as is thesteering column, and the gearchange works a treat. We’vestarted to fit the fibreglass, well atleast started to cut it out to fit, andthat’s been a really anxiousexperience!

To move on, the last month or sohas been really expensive. Due tothe limited space available with theDuratec engine, I decided at the

planning stage Iwas going thethrottle body route. The big decisionhas been whichones to get.

After muchdeliberation I’vegone for a set of ATPower spindlelessbodies and coupledthis to a SpecialistComponentsTyphoon ECU. John Goddard at AThas been great and helped me toget the right set-up for the car. Thebodies are fantastic, fit superbly, and look almost too good to put onthe car!

Finally I asked the question last

dash design; I decided to extend theends of the dash to meet up with thesill tops. A second pod was thenmade, as the instruments werepreviously too close together (a goodthing that I had a plentiful supply ofplywood).

Not having a comprehensive buildmanual and left to your own devices, you have to experiment and beprepared to make and remakevarious items.

The dash was covered in foam andvinyl (very fiddly), the instrumentsfitted and then wired up using blockconnectors to make removal easier. There is still a lot of work to be donein the cockpit area, but I feel it is at

last taking shape. I am now starting to think about

applying for IVA, but deciding on acompletion date is not easy at themoment as my weekends are fullwith hillclimb marshalling. By thetime you read this we will havecelebrated 50 years of Loton Parkwith a ‘Party in the Park’ on the 23rdMay. Lots of classic and racing carson show and trips up the hill invarious cars including an Ultima(must get a ride in that).

I also spend a lot of time longdistance walking – I have 42 milewalk across Wales lined up on the19th June in aid of LeukaemiaResearch, so wish me luck for that.

CKC Technical Editor John Dickens tests

out a new mould making kit available

from Carbon Mods. Next month he

creates the carbon panel itself.

Carbon Mods’ CarbonFibre Laminating Kit

In the last issue I tested the CarbonMods’ Mould Making Kit by using itto produce a mould for a small trimpanel for my motorcycle. Theinteresting feature of the kit was theuse of a fibrous epoxy putty to formthe main structure of the mould, rather than the more usual resin andglassfibre matting.

This month I intend to use themould, along with another CarbonMods kit, its Carbon FibreLaminating Starter Kit, to producethe replica trim panel in epoxyreinforced carbon fibre.

Carbon Mods, based in Stoke onTrent, produces carbon fibre panels

for popular kit cars and also sells thematerials used in their production, but the company has also now puttogether a number of kits containingsmall quantities of materials at areasonable cost.

Its Carbon Fibre Laminating StarterKit (CMCFLK300) is priced at £39.95and contains...

330g Laminating epoxy resin166g Epoxy hardener0.3m2 2/2 twill weave carbon

fibre fabric0.3m2 woven glass fibre fabric35ml PVA Mould Release Agent2 Brushes

Gloves are needed when working with the epoxy resin. The viscous epoxy resin is weighed out as accurately as

possible.

The thinner hardener is also weighed out accurately. The

ratio is 2:1, resin to hardener.

Careful heating will thin out the resin and allow the trapped

air bubbles to escape.

Squeezing excess resin out of the brush will reduce the

amount of acetone needed.

Rinse the brush in 40 – 50 ml of acetone.

Thorough mixing is essential to avoid setting problems. The cloudy appearance is due to tiny air bubbles in the mix. A thin even coating of resin is painted into the mould.

10 11 12

13 14 15

I prefer the paint pad or ‘sponge on a stick’ for applying PVA. A thin even coating covering the whole surface is ideal. The PVA needs to be fully dry before the next stage.

The epoxy putty mould ready for use. The contents of the Carbon Mods kit. PVA release agent is recommended and supplied in the kit.

It is designed to allowexperimentation with carbon/epoxy ata reasonable cost, to repair orreinforce an existing carbon fibrecomponent or to produce one or twosmall items.

Once again, no instructions areprovided with the kit. The labelinside the lid supplies the webaddress of a downloadable PDF fileof instructions which prints out asseven sides of A4 paper. As with theprevious kit, the instructions arevery detailed and also provideexplanations of the processesinvolved and tips for best results.

There is also a section whichrealistically assesses the resultspossible with the kit. On the CarbonMods website there is a video clipwhich shows the kit in use, soproviding you have web access

there is no shortage of availableinformation.

RELEASE AGENTAs with any laminating process, thefirst step is the application of a releaseagent to the mould so that thefinished article can be removed fromthe mould once it has cured. Un-thickened epoxy resin tends to pool or’fish-eye’ on waxed surfaces, so PVArelease agent alone is recommendedand provided in the kit.

The PVA medium can be appliedwith a brush, a lint free cloth asrecommended in the kit or, as Iprefer, a sponge. I actually use asponge paint pad originally designedfor use with water based paints.

Ideally what is needed is a thineven film of PVA completely coveringthe entire surface of mould. The bluecolour of the PVA is added to helpyou achieve this. Take care with theapplication of the PVA. Any untreatedarea, no matter how small, will stick

tightly to the epoxy laminating resin, preventing a clean release.

The PVA should be allowed to dryfully. This will take 20-30 minutes atroom temperature.

SURFACE COATThe next step is to apply the epoxyresin surface coat which will formthe outer glossy surface of thefinished laminate. In normal GRPlamination this would be thegelcoat, a specially thickenedpolyester resin.

Unfortunately the thickeningagents used for epoxies tend to turnthe resin opaque, so if we need atransparent finish we have to usethe resin without thickener.

The instructions give no guidanceon coverage, so I made aguesstimate based on previousexperience. The mix ratio of resin tohardener is 2:1 and needs to be

your finger or glove.

FABRICREINFORCEMENTThe carbon fabric must be cut tosize. If the shape is simple the sizecan be estimated, but for complexshapes it may be better to make atemplate before you start the job.

Allow for an overlap of 20-30mmall around the mould. Never lay thefabric on a dirty or dusty surface. Anyspecks of dirt on the fabric will bevisible through the clear surfaceresin. Decide how many layers offabric you will use. Due to the opennature of the woven fabric, a singlelayer of carbon fibre will allow lightthrough it and will be semi-transparent. A second layer isnormally needed to prevent this. Idecided to use two layers of carbonfabric and one layer of wovenglassfibre cloth to add support.

rapidly, so pooling is more likely. Beready to brush away any areas ofexcess resin. Do not overheat the resinas this can cause it to set unevenly.

When you are happy with thesurface coat, set the mould aside andallow the resin to start to harden. Thiscan take from 1½ to 4 hoursdepending on the temperature of theroom.

If you intend to clean the brushstart by squeezing out any excessresin. The remaining resin can bedissolved away using Acetone as longas it has not fully set. Three rinses willusually remove all traces of the resin. Most nail varnish removers areacetone based, so they will do the jobtoo.

Keep checking the resin surfacecoat. The correct texture is importantif the next layers are to bond properly. The surface should be firm but stillsticky. No resin should come off on

weighed out quite accurately. Iweighed out 30g of resin and 15g ofhardener to give a total of 45g ofepoxy. This turned out to be far morethan was needed to cover the0.12m2 mould surface.

The two components must bemixed thoroughly, taking care toscrape the resin from the sides of thecontainer too. There is no rush hereso take your time.

When I was happy with the mixingprocess, I painted a thin evencontinuous coat of the resin onto theprepared mould surface. If the resinis applied too heavily it will pool inany low points and will have a milkyor cloudy appearance when it sets.

The resin is quite viscous and islikely to have tiny air bubbles trappedin it. Using a hairdryer to heat theresin film will reduce its viscosity, allowing the bubbles to escape, but itwill also allow the resin to flow more

turquoise, purple and red. Those are the

colours that signify BMW’s M division. On

GKD’s Legend may look familiar, but it hides a secret – it’sthe first sevenesque roadster to adopt modern BMW donorcomponents. Adam Wilkins drove it to see how it stacks upagainst more familiar Ford based offerings.

the Legend, it highlights that the car is

based on the 3-series. Since this is the

first sevenesque roadster to use a single

BMW donor, it’s little wonder that GKD

wants to shout loudly about it – and

there’s no doubting that this colour

scheme is loud! Perhaps the nickname

should have been “the BMW based one.”

If you don’t allow yourself to be

distracted by the colours, then the

Legend appears to be a good looking car

(a quality that was more obviously

apparent with the first white

demonstrator). The proportions and

detailing comply strictly with convention,

but the lack of bravery in the styling has

resulted in an appealing shape. The only

detractor is the position of the headlights.

They were raised for the IVA test to allow

the indicators to comply with the regs. I’d

rather see lower slung headlights and the

indicators relocated to the nose.

Otherwise, the car is pretty much as

we described back in our July 2009

Colour scheme

echoes those of BMW’s

M division. First

demonstrator made the

point more subtly with

stripes.

ONE CAR! ONE MAN! ONE DAY?

123/125 Nathan Way Woolwich London SE28 0AB | T: 0208 317 1111 | www.southsidearc.com

At Southside we are always trying to make our trade interesting, for our staffand our customers!Well I think this time we have managed to come up with an idea that should get people talking..... one of ourdirectors Colin Cooper, a big car enthusiast, especially the kitcar side of the industry has given himself a bigchallenge? This has not been done before and to tell you the truth we don't know that it can be done! He isgoing to attempt to build a Dax Rush from start to finish in 24hrs!!

Not just any Dax Rush, but a fully equipped top of the range, SVA ready car!

Honda Vtec 250bhp Engine6 Speed Manual BoxFull Leather trimCosworth running gearFully custom painted Body – he will need a bit of help with this, but it will be done same day!

We are then adding the extra challenge of attempting this with our doors open for anyone who wants to comealong and see what's being done!

You are welcome to visit us, have a drink, ask questions, you can see Colin building the car and also see thebody being painted!

So all of you out there that would love to have one of these, but think maybe it would be to tricky to build... wellwe aim to show that anyone can build one, maybe not in a day! but certainly with a bit of planning and helpfrom the right people, it is easily acheivable.

rub through the thin resin layer intothe fabric beneath.

This kit certainly achieves itsaims. It contains all the materialsneeded to allow the user toexperiment with carbon/epoxycomposites, repair or reinforce anitem or fabricate a couple of smallcomponents. The downloadableinstructions are very comprehensivebut, as before, I would like to see atleast some basic instructionssupplied as part of the kit.

Information about recommended

76 www.completekitcar.co.uk JULY 2010

coverage and quantitieswould also be helpful. The kit is obviouslycapable of producinggood results and isreasonably priced at£39.95.

Next time I use epoxyresins I will certainly havea greater appreciation ofthe different techniquesinvolved compared withGRP/polyestercomposites.

The brush is squeezed dry to allow it to absorb more

surface resin.

After a final check the laminate is set aside to cure. The trim panel came out of the mould easily. The blue

colour of the PVA is still visible.

37 38 39

The panel has been trimmed and washed. The gloss finish is straight from the mould.

Unfortunately, in spite of my care, resin has pooled in this area leaving a void.

READER’S CAR James Warner’s WR4

WE’RE GETTING USED to these

caged/exoskeletal cars these days.

They’re a welcome addition to the kit car

scene, ushering in a new sub-genre in the

same way that bike-engined kit cars really

took off a decade ago.

But there are facts about the car you

see here that are worth highlighting. For

starters, the builder, James Warner, has

not simply gone out and bought a kit from

an established manufacturer – instead he

has sat down and designed and built the

WR4 at home, as a one-off. Next, he built

it in a single garage with no light or power,

having to run an extension cable from his

house – nothing heroic about that, you

might think, but James didn’t need

electricity just to power a drill, but rather

to fabricate and weld the complete

chassis, create a car and then spray the

chassis... all in a single garage. That’s a

good effort. And finally I want you to

remember one other vital fact about

James’ creation. His car is not a replica

and hasn’t been inspired by any other kit

car. When he began designing the WR4

on his computer, there wasn’t a single

company within the scene offering

anything of this type (neither SDR nor

MEV were on the market). Only the Arial

Atom was available, and although the

exposed chassis rails may have been an

inspiration, James’ WR4 is certainly no

replica.

So when James pushes the car out of

the garage and I watch him drive it to the

photo location, where we spend the next

Last month we followed the build of James Warner’s one-off

caged car. This month we’ve been to see the finished

article and are hoping it won’t remain a one-off for long...

The editor reports.

his one-off WR4.

Page 37: 1CKC

how small the WR4 is... it really is tiny,

with a chunky wheel out at each corner.

But this flyweight reality (James claims

just 350kgs) and diminutive size are

perfectly countered by the car’s semi-matt

black finish and large diameter chassis

rails which give it an urban, almost military

toughness. You’d never describe it as

dinky, dainty or toy-like. There’s a real

sense of purpose, almost menace here.

And of course everything is exposed.

The small ‘bonnet’ is the only panel on

the car (with the exception of the Carbon

Mods cycle wings), with nothing over the

engine and the sides completely bare. Up

few hours examining it in detail, it seems

all the more amazing that I find it to be

one of the best looking and purest caged

car I’ve come across.

I love the almost complete lack of

bodywork, but more importantly I’m hugely

impressed by the beautiful curves of the

main chassis rails, the robust diameter of

the triangulating chassis tubes, and the

business-like but aesthetically pleasing

construction. However, I suspect even

James would admit that his welding isn’t

the tidiest on the planet, but the finished

article is ensorcelling.

Seen in the flesh, I’m surprised by just

front, that means the floor-mounted

pedals are wonderfully exposed, as is the

battery, with its kill switch just beside. The

dash is as minimal as you’d expect, and

the ETB Digidash is the perfect self-

contained unit for this kind of car.

The challenge for a skeletal car such

as this is that not only the bits that you

might like to show off are visible, but also

the bits you would more normally be

happy to conceal. Wiring isn’t particularly

a feature I’d describe as attractive, nor is

a steering column or rack. So the level of

finish on these components also needs to

be considered. James’ car has an
