Part 2 Chapter 4

• Winston purchases the room above Charrington’s shop, “It was as thought they were intentionally stepping into their graves”

• Washer Woman: “It was only an ‘opeless fancy”• Concerning the bed: “It’s sure to be full of bugs,

but who cares?”• Concerning the room: “A rat. I saw him stick his

beastly nose out of the wainscoting. There’s a hole down there” (151).

Chap 4 cont

• The rat stuck his nose out beneath the picture of St. Clement’s Church. They sing the chopper song and then Julia says, “I bet the picture’s got bugs behind it” (153).

• The paperweight: “He had a feeling that he could get inside it, and that in fact he was inside it... The paperweight was the room he was in, and the coral was Julia’s life and his own, fixed in a sort of eternity at the heart of the crystal” (154).

Chapter 5

• Julia believes “The rocket bombs which fell daily on London were probably fired by the Government of Oceania itself just to keep people frightened” (160).

• “History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party was always right... The only evidence is inside my own mind, and I don’t know with any certainty that any other human shares my memories” (162).

Chapter 6• “What was happening was only the working-out of a

process that had started years ago. The first step had been a secret, involuntary thought, the second had been opening the diary. He had moved from thoughts to words, and now from words to actions. The last step was something that would happen in the Ministry of Love. He had accepted it. The end was contained in the beginning... It was like a foretaste of death... A chilly shuddering feeling had taken possession of his body. He had the sensation of stepping into the dampness of a grave, and it was not much better because he had always known that the grave was there waiting for him” (166-167).

Chapter 7• Memory of Winston and his sister and mother• “’The one thing that matters is that we shouldn’t

betray one another... ‘If you mean confessing,’ she said, ‘we shall do that, right enough. Everybody always confesses. You can’t help it. They torture you.’ ‘I don’t mean confessing. Confession is betrayal. What you say or do doesn’t matter: only feelings matter. If they could make me stop loving you – that would be the real betrayal’. She thought it over. ‘They can make you say anything but they can’t make you believe it. They can’t get inside you’”(173-174)

Chap 7 cont• “If you can feel that staying human is worthwhile,

even when it can’t have any result whatever, you’ve beaten them” (174)

• Ministry of Love = torture• “But if the object was not to stay alive but to stay

human, what difference did it make? They could not alter your feelings: for that matter you could not alter them yourself, even if you wanted to.... The inner heart, whose workings were mysterious even to yourself, remained impregnable” (174)

Chapter 8

• Winston, Julia and O’Brien meet and O’Brien provides Winston with Goldstein’s book

• “The Brotherhood cannot be wiped out because it is not an organisation in the ordinary sense. Nothing holds it together except an idea which is indestructible. You will never have anything to sustain you except the idea... We are the dead”(183).

Chapter 9

• “Eurasia comprises the whole of the northern part of the European and Asiatic land-mass, from Portugal to the Bering Strait. Oceania comprises the Americas, the Atlantic islands including the British Isles, Australaisa and the Southern portion of Africa. Eastasia... Comprises China and the countries to the south of it... Japanese islands... Manchuria, Mongolia and Tibet” (193)

• “The conditions of life in all three superstates are very much the same. In Oceania the prevailing philosophy is called INGSOC, in Eurasia it is called NEO-BOLSHEVISM, and in Eastasia it is ... DEATH-WORSHIP.

Chapter 10

• “You are the dead” said and iron voice behind them

• There was another crash. Someone had picked up the glass paperweight from the table and smashed it to pieces on the hearth-stone.

• Charrington is a member of the Thought Police• Julia and Winston are caught.

Chapter 3

• "There was a dull aching in his belly. It had been there ever since they had bundled him into the closed van and driven him away. But he was also hungry, with a gnawing, unwholesome kind of hunger. It might be twenty-four hours since he had eaten, it might be thirty-six. He still did not know, probably never would know, whether it had been morning or evening when they arrested him" (237).

• "Everything came back to his sick body, which shrank trembling from the smallest pain" (241).

• "He had only six thoughts. The pain in his belly; a piece of bread; the blood and the screaming; O'Brien; Julia; the razor blade" (244).

• Parsons is in prison. His daughter sold him out as he yelled out, "Down with Big Brother" in his sleep.

• Emaciated man, Winston, bread, "confession"• "I've got a wife and three children… You can take the

whole lot of them and cut their throats in front of my eyes, and I will stand by and watch it. But not room 101!" (249).

• "In this place you could not feel anything, except pain and the foreknowledge of pain. Besides, was it possible, when you were actually suffering it, to wish for any reason whatever that your own pain would increase?" (250).

• O'Brien is a member of the Inner Party [insert GASP here]

• "The elbow! He had slumped to his knees, almost paralyzed… Inconceivable… that one blow could cause such pain!... Never, for any reason on earth, could you wish for an increase of pain. Of pain you could only wish for one thing: That it should stop. Nothing in the world was so bad as physical pain. In the face of pain there are no heroes, no heroes, he thought over and over as he writhed on the floor, clutching uselessly at his disabled left arm" (251).

Chapter 2

• Winston and O'Brien have a PAINFUL chat.• O'Brien is taking PAINS to make sure that if Big

Brother says that 2+2=5, then Winston must believe it to be true

• Winston asks how they can make people forget their memories because they have not made him forget his

• To that, O'Brien says: "On the contrary, you have not controlled it… You are here because you have failed in humility, in self-discipline. You would not make the act of submission which is the price of sanity. You preferred to be a lunatic, a minority of one. Only the disciplined mind can see reality, Winston. You believe that reality is something objective, external, existing in its own right. You also believe that the nature of reality is self-evident. When you delude yourself into thinking that you see something, you assume that everyone else sees the same thing as you…

• But it tell you, Winston, that reality is not external. Reality exists in the mind, and nowhere else… only in the mind of the Party, which is collective and immortal… that is the fact that you have to re-learn" (261).

• "The Party is not interested in the overt act: the thought is all we care about. We do not merely destroy our enemies, we change them" (265).

• "You are a flaw in the pattern, Winston. You are a stain that must be wiped out… When you finally surrender to us, it must be of your own free will. We do not destroy the heretic because he resists us: so long as he resists us we never destroy him. We convert him, we capture his inner mind, we reshape him… Even the victim in the Russian purges could carry rebellion locked up in his skull as he walked down the passage waiting for the bullet. But we make the brain perfect before we blow it out" (267).

• Julia betrayed Winston.

Chapter 3• "There are three stages in your re-integration… there

is learning, there is understanding, and there is acceptance" (273).

• O'Brien wrote "the book"• "Alone-free-the human being is always defeated"

(277).• "We control life… at all its levels. You are assuming

that there is something called human nature which will be outraged by what we do and will turn against us. But we create human nature. Men are infinitely malleable" (282). WOW

• O'Brien tells Winston to take off his clothes and looking in the mirror, Winston doesn't even recognize himself. He is utterly emaciated.

• "Do you see that thing facing you? That is the last man. If you are human, that is humanity" (285).

• Winston asks when he will be shot and O'Brien says soon.

Chapter 4

• O'Brien continues his "treatment" and Winston still hates Big Brother

Chapter 5

• O'Brien makes Winston face his biggest fears, Rats.

• In the face of his fear (fight or flight), Winston gives up Julia

• "Do it to Julia! Do it to Julia! Not me! Julia! I don't care what you do to her. Tear her face off, strip her to the bones. Not me! Julia! Not me!" (300).

Chapter 6

• Winston is at the Chestnut Tree Café and there before him is the proverbial chess board… always waiting for him: "white always mates, he thought with a cloudy mysticism. Always, without exception, it is so arranged. In no chess problem since the beginning of the world has black ever won. Did it not symbolise the eternal, unvarying triumph of Good over Evil? The huge face gazed back at him, full of calm power. White always mates" (302).

• We learn that Winston and Julia had crossed paths in a park after The Ministry of Love and Room 101. They simply informed the other that they had betrayed them. They said that at times you are faced with something you cannot bear and you really do wish it was happening to someone else.

• Winston has been troubled by "false memories"

• Winston dreams: "He was back at the Ministry of Love, with everything forgiven, his soul white as snow. He was in the public dock, confessing everything, implicating everybody. He was walking down the white-tiled corridor, with the feeling of walking in sunlight, and an armed guard at his back. The long-hoped-for-bullet was entering his brain.

• He gazed up at the enormous face… two gin-scented tears trickled down the sides of his nose. But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother" (311).
