A"TICLE 1)or the purpose o$ these artices8 the ter continenta she$ is used as re$erring ;a< to the sea=ed and su=soi o$ the
su=arine areas ad>acent to the coast =ut outside the area o$ the territoria sea8 to a depth o$ 200 etres or8 =e?ond that
iit8 to here the depth o$ the super>acent aters adits o$ the e@poitation o$ the natura resources o$ the said areas ;=<
to the sea=ed and su=soi o$ siiar su=arine areas ad>acent to the coasts o$ isands.
A"TICLE !1. The coasta 5tate e@ercises o7er the continenta she$ so7ereign rights $or the purpose o$ e@poring it and e@poiting its
natura resources.
2. The rights re$erred to in paragraph 1 o$ this artice are e@cusi7e in the sense that i$ the coasta 5tate does not e@pore
the continenta she$ or e@poit its natura resources8 no one a? undertaBe these acti7ities8 or aBe a cai to the
continenta she$8 ithout the e@press consent o$ the coasta 5tate.
". The rights o$ the coasta 5tate o7er the continenta she$ do not depend on occupation8 e$$ecti7e or notiona8 or on an?
e@press procaation.
4. The natura resources re$erred to in these artices consist o$ the inera and other non-i7ing resources o$ the sea=ed
and su=soi together ith i7ing organiss =eonging to sedentar? species8 that is to sa?8 organiss hich8 at the
har7esta=e stage8 either are io=ie on or under the sea=ed or are una=e to o7e e@cept in constant ph?sica contact
ith the sea=ed or the su=soi.
A"TICLE #The rights o$ the coasta 5tate o7er the continenta she$ do not a$$ect the ega status o$ the super>acent aters as high
seas8 or that o$ the airspace a=o7e those aters.
A"TICLE $5u=>ect to its right to taBe reasona=e easures $or the e@poration o$ the continenta she$ and the e@poitation o$ its
natura resources8 the coasta 5tate a? not ipede the a?ing or aintenance o$ su=arine ca=es or pipe ines on the
continenta she$.
A"TICLE 51. The e@poration o$ the continenta she$ and the e@poitation o$ its natura resources ust not resut in an? un>usti$ia=e
inter$erence ith na7igation8 $ishing or the conser7ation o$ the i7ing resources o$ the sea8 nor resut in an? inter$erence
ith $undaenta oceanographic or other scienti$ic research carried out ith the intention o$ open pu=ication.
2. 5u=>ect to the pro7isions o$ paragraphs 1 and 6 o$ this artice8 the coasta 5tate is entited to construct and aintain or
operate on the continenta she$ instaations and other de7ices necessar? $or its e@poration and the e@poitation o$ its
natura resources8 and to esta=ish sa$et? ones around such instaations and de7ices and to taBe in those ones
easures necessar? $or their protection.
". The sa$et? ones re$erred to in paragraph 2 o$ this artice a? e@tend to a distance o$ #00 etres around the
instaations and other de7ices hich ha7e =een erected8 easured $ro each point o$ their outer edge. 5hips o$ a
nationaities ust respect these sa$et? ones.
4. 5uch instaations and de7ices8 though under the >urisdiction o$ the coasta 5tate8 do not possess the status o$ isands.
The? ha7e no territoria sea o$ their on8 and their presence does not a$$ect the deiitation o$ the territoria sea o$ the
coasta 5tate.
#. Due notice ust =e gi7en o$ the construction o$ an? such instaations8 and peranent eans $or gi7ing arning o$ their
presence ust =e aintained. An? instaations hich are a=andoned or disused ust =e entire? reo7ed.
6. 'either the instaations or de7ices8 nor the sa$et? ones around the8 a? =e esta=ished here inter$erence a? =e
caused to the use o$ recognied sea anes essentia to internationa na7igation.
E. The coasta 5tate is o=iged to undertaBe8 in the sa$et? ones8 a appropriate easures $or the protection o$ the i7ing
resources o$ the sea $ro har$u agents.
. The consent o$ the coasta 5tate sha =e o=tained in respect o$ an? research concerning the continenta she$ and
undertaBen there. 'e7ertheess the coasta 5tate sha not nora? ithhod its consent i$ the reFuest is su=itted =? a
Fuai$ied institution ith a 7ie to pure? scienti$ic research into the ph?sica or =ioogica characteristics o$ the continenta
she$8 su=>ect to the pro7iso that the coasta 5tate sha ha7e the right8 i$ it so desires8 to participate or to =e represented inthe research8 and that in an? e7ent the resuts sha =e pu=ished.
A"TICLE %1. here the sae continenta she$ is ad>acent to the territories o$ to or ore 5tates hose coasts are opposite each
other8 the =oundar? o$ the continenta she$ appertaining to such 5tates sha =e deterined =? agreeent =eteen the.

tunneing irrespecti7e o$ the depth o$ ater a=o7e the su=soi.

A"TICLE 9This Con7ention is su=>ect to rati$ication. The instruents o$ rati$ication sha =e deposited ith the 5ecretar?-Genera o$
the &nited 'ations.
A"TICLE 1'This Con7ention sha =e open $or accession =? an? 5tates =eonging to an? o$ the categories entioned in artice . The
instruents o$ accession sha =e deposited ith the 5ecretar?-Genera o$ the &nited 'ations.
Arti(e 111. This Con7ention sha coe into $orce on the thirtieth da? $ooing the date o$ deposit o$ the tent?-second instruent
o$ rati$ication or accession ith the 5ecretar?-Genera o$ the &nited 'ations.
2. )or each 5tate rati$?ing or acceding to the Con7ention a$ter the deposit o$ the tent?-second instruent o$ rati$ication
or accession8 the Con7ention sha enter into $orce on the thirtieth da? a$ter deposit =? such 5tate o$ its instruent o$
rati$ication or accession.
A"TICLE 1!1. At the tie o$ signature8 rati$ication or accession8 an? 5tate a? aBe reser7ations to artices o$ the Con7ention other
than to artices 1 to " incusi7e.
2. An? Contracting 5tate aBing a reser7ation in accordance ith the preceding paragraph a? at an? tie ithdra the
reser7ation =? a counication to that e$$ect addressed to the 5ecretar?-Genera o$ the &nited 'ations.
A"TICLE 1#1. A$ter the e@piration o$ a period o$ $i7e ?ears $ro the date on hich this Con7ention sha enter into $orce8 a reFuest $or
the re7ision o$ this Con7ention a? =e ade at an? tie =? an? Contracting art? =? eans o$ a noti$ication in riting
addressed to the 5ecretar?-Genera o$ the &nited 'ations.
2. The Genera Asse=? o$ the &nited 'ations sha decide upon the steps8 i$ an?8 to =e taBen in respect o$ such reFuest.
