tei ameDynamic, diverse economyfuels Rutherford Countys growthsr b Betsy Williams Prp b Brian McCord
While other communities and states are
losing population and manufacturing jobs,Rutherford County, which has grown in
population by more than 44 percent in the lastdecade, has become a destination of choice across agamut of industries, resulting in a jobless rate morethan two points below the national average.
While Rutherford Countys strategic location adays drive from 75 percent of the country has playeda role, its the constant of visionary leadership thathas kept this community of more than 262,000ahead of the curve.
sonAry EAdErsh
We have exhibited consistently good leadershipfrom people who have made visionary decisionsthrough the years, says Holly Sears, vice presidentof economic development for the RutherfordCounty Chamber of Commerce. Consistencyin a community is paramount when companiesare making multimillion-dollar decisions for anew location or expansion, and thats one of thereasons Rutherford County has been one of thego-to hotspots.
Indeed, the county proved to be a go-to spotfor Amazon.com, which selected Rutherford County
as one of two sites for new a fulfillment centerin Tennessee, creating more than 1,000 jobs and$135 million in investment in the state.
Having a household name like Amazon in
Rutherford County just adds to our countysportfolio of top corporate entities in our area, said Rutherford County Mayor Ernest Burgess. This proves that Rutherford County is adestination for jobs.
Building on advantages in tax and cost structure, availability of a highly skilled workforce, a top-ranked education system, and transportationinfrastructure, Rutherford County and its populationcenters, Murfreesboro, La Vergne and Smyrna, have attracted a roster of major employers thatincludes Nissan, State Farm, General Mills,

Driving the surge in manufacturingemployment is the automotive industry, with several automotive suppliers, including Daiei Inc., Valeo, Tottser-Iroquois Industries and NHK Seating, investing more than $200 million inRutherford County facilities during thepast 18 months.
This superior business climate has alsoattracted other manufacturers includingHoldrite, a national plumbing partssupplier, and helped make RutherfordCounty a corporate headquarters locale.
urfrEEsBoro youn rofEssonAsWith these successes has come a new
generation of young professionals whohave discovered the countys highstandard of living.
Murfreesboro Young Professionals wascreated in 2010 to help these youngleaders under age 40 meet each other andbecome involved in the community.
A group of us started meeting in 2010to gauge interest among other young
professionals and formalize a programthat would get us involved in thecommunity, says Chassen Haynes, 2011
MYP chair. We found more people
who want professional development andnetworking opportunities and whowanted to focus on community outreachand philanthropic efforts in thecommunity. We also wanted a connectionbetween the current decision-makers andwell-seasoned professionals and thoseindividuals who are up and coming andwho moved here from other places.
Partnering with United Way ofRutherford and Cannon Counties,MYP has launched successful newevents that have raised thousands ofdollars for the community charity, helped build camaraderie among MYPmembers and furthered communityinvolvement.
Clint Marks, a Florida transplant whomoved to Murfreesboro in 2002 to playfootball, chose to remain after college, convinced that his new home was theplace to be. He will chair MYP in 2013.
This has given me the opportunity tobecome involved and give back to mycommunity, he says. I have made so
many g reat friends and developed excellentrelationships with so many new people. Ijust didnt want to leave.

MTSU, officially foundedSept. 11, 1911, celebrates itscentennial through commencementceremonies in May 2012. The largestundergraduate university in the

The third-largest employer inthe county has crafted a reputationthat extends well beyond thecampus and well beyond thecounty. From its roots as a teachercollege, todays MTSU includesnine academic colleges, highly
regarded centers of research andspecialized programs that attractstudents from around the world.
MTSU began in 1911 as a two-year program for trainingteachers, says Andrew Oppmann,MTSU spokesman and associatevice president of marketing and

MTSU is currently ranked asthe No. 1 choice for undergraduatestudents attending any universityin Tennessee, and the No. 1 choice
for transfer students throughoutthe state. The university is also theNo. 1 choice for Tennesseesmilitary veterans.
There are 140 undergraduatedegree programs we offer, includingquite a few that people might findsurprising, he says. One is an
aerospace curriculum, where wehave more than 30 aircraft on site, plus a new $3 million air trafficcontrol simulator. It is a 360-degreesimulator thats like stepping ontothe bridge of Star Treks Enterprise. It allows aerospace professors andstudents to simulate any airportin the world.

turning 200 is a cause for celebration for anycity, but even better when that city can lookback with pride and forward with anticipation.
In Murfreesboro, it feels like the party is justgetting started.
With a population that grew by 58 percentbetween 2000 and 2010, Murfreesboro is home tomore than 108,000 people, and was one of the 12fastest-growing cities in the United States in 2010.
Businesses are investing in Murfreesboro and peopleare relocating here for good reasons.Cities have a personality based on their history
and geography, just like people exhibit, says AndreaLoughry, a longtime business executive andcommunity leader. Murfreesboros location in theheart of Tennessee predisposed its personality towardSouthern graces, sharpened by our heritage as aneducation center. Our controlled growth over thelast decades has enhanced our citys personalitywith more diversity and culture. Just as families passtraits from one generation to another, Murfreesborohas continued over the years to remain a caring
community even as it has expanded in population.Loughry is chair emeritus of Mind2Marketplace,
which is based in Murfreesboro and serves a 40-countyarea in Tennessee, linking people and organizationsto bring innovation and technology to the marketplace.
QuAty of fE EEts BusnEss-frEndyMurfreesboros quality of life in an educated

In addition, Middle Tennessee State University, the states largest undergraduate campus, and itsJennings A. Jones College of Business have a catalogof business assistance and resources, while theUniversity of Tennessee extension serv ice offersagribusiness accommodations.

hoEroWn CoAnEs rosErPeter Demos, owner of Demos Steak &
Spaghetti House, a family-owned restaurantcompany in Murfreesboro, says the cityoffers the right amenities to businessesand residents.
Murfreesboro is in a great location, and the county has some excel lent
assets including transportation, education institutions, the RutherfordCounty Chamber of Commerce andthe cooperative spirit between thegovernments of the cities and county,Demos says. Its also great thatMurfreesboro has kept its small-townfeel, but still has the amenities people
expect from larger cities.Demos parents, Jim and Doris, were
already successful restaurateurs whenthey sold their businesses and movedto Murfreesboro to start a new concept. In 1989, they opened Demos, which has
since expanded to four other locations.Demos says the leadership inMurfreesboro and throughoutRutherford County recognizes thata good quality of life is dependent uponhaving a good business environment, andthey have created that environment here.
Clear evidence of quality of life meetinga top-notch business environment is ondisplay in Murfreesboros downtown, which boasts scores of unique shops, restaurants and attractions.
Downtown Murfreesboro is a
vibrant, happy place, says KathleenHerzog, Main Street executive director. Our historic downtown, besidesbeing beautiful, is alive 24/7 with astrong business and local governmentcommunity, unique retai l, wonderfuldining choices, a fun nightlifeand a residential component.

Smyrna Airport, major highways make
Rutherford County a logistics leader
n 2011, Smyrna/Rutherford County Airport soldas much airplane fuel as it did in 2007, the yearbefore the recession began to seriously impact
corporate travel. The increased fuel sales in 2011 are not only
a good indicator of the airports health, but aleading indicator of the overall economy, says JohnBlack, executive director of the Smyrna/RutherfordCounty Airport Authority Board and the 2011 GeneralAviation Airport Manager of the Year for the FAASouthern Division.
Our airport deals primarily with corporate travel,
so when corporate America is using aviation to flythroughout the country, it shows that the economy istrying to bounce back, he says.
ood hhWAys, tooThe airport is one of the key reasons Rutherford
Countys transportation network is so impressive.Add an excellent road system, with Interstate 24cutting through the community, as well as easyaccess to I-40, I-65, State Route 840 and severalmajor highways, and its easy to see why the countyhas attracted major distribution investment.
Those thoroughfares put Rutherford Countywithin a days drive of 75 percent of U.S. markets, making the county a prime location for companiesinvolved in distribution and warehousing. Freight
hauling carriers are also close to NashvilleInternational Airport and, of course, Smyrna/Rutherford County Airport.

Through the Lens
Driving around Rutherford County,
there are reminders of the Civil War
everywhere - from Stones River
National Battlefield, the site of the
Battle of Stones River from Dec. 31,
1862, to Jan. 2, 1863, to the
Confederate Soldiers monument in
the center of the square in downtown
Murfreesboro. With so many lives lost
on both the Union and Confederatesides, its important to teach younger
generations about the war, which
happens every year at the Sam Davis
Home in Smyrna as part of its Annual
Heritage Days. Theres sort of an eerie
sense of calm standing alone in a
battlefield cemetery and reflecting on
what happened there. These sites are
well worth a visit for anyone headed to
Rutherford County.
