WE GATHER IN GOD’S PRESENCE

For thousands of years, Indigenous people have walked on this land. We are gathered on the traditional territory of the Anishinabek and Haudenosaunee Confederacy and acknowledge their stewardship of this land throughout the ages. We also acknowledge with respect the history, spirituality, and culture of the peoples with whom Treaty 29 was signed and this territory wherein our church resides.

Announcements & Welcome Lighting of the Christ Candle Prelude: The Lord’s My Shepherd

Brother James’ Air, arr. Patricia Lou Harris

Opening Hymn: The Church’s One Foundation VU 332

Opening Prayer: (in unison) We find our foundation in You, living God, We discover our mission through the life and mission of Jesus, In You, grace is offered and new life is possible, Renew and give birth to the desire You have for us, Open our hearts to Your mystery as we worship. Sometimes our foundation needs work and repair, Rebuild us when our lives are cracked and worn out, Grace our faith when we are full of worry or questions, Forgive us for moments we have hurt others, Inspire us when we have neglected Your creation, Bring us back home again to Your foundation, we pray… (Silent Prayer)

Words of Hope and Healing (adapt. Colossians 3) One: God clothes us with love, which binds everything together in

harmony.

All: The peace of Christ comes to our hearts and we are called into

one body. We give thanks for this gift. Amen.

Welcoming of New Members Affirmation of Faith

Chair of Council: On behalf of Avondale United Church, I present the

following persons whom we welcome into the membership of

this community of faith…

Thank You for your “yes” to our common life together as

Avondale United Church. Your life is a gift to this community

and your faith will help us grow. We are grateful for your

presence here. And so we ask you to affirm your faith with

these questions.

One: Do you believe in God, Source of love; in Jesus Christ, love

incarnate and in the Holy Spirit, love’s power? New Members: I do, by the grace of God. One: Desiring the freedom of new life in Christ, will you seek to resist

evil, and to live in love and justice? New Members: I will, God being my helper. One: Will you follow the way of Jesus Christ? New Members: I will, God being my helper. One: Will you join with your sisters and brothers in this community of

faith to celebrate God’s presence, live with respect in creation, and love and serve others?

New Members: I will, God being my helper.

One: Let us pledge to these persons our continued support and care.

All: We will continue to support you, walk with you, and grow with

you. With God’s help, we will live out our baptism as a loving

community in Jesus Christ: nurturing one another in faith,

upholding one another in prayer and encouraging one another

in God’s work.

One: Wherever we find ourselves on life’s journey, let’s join together

in these words as an expression of our communal faith.

“A NEW CREED” (in unison) We are not alone, we live in God’s world. We believe in God: who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit. We trust in God. We are called to be the Church: to celebrate God’s presence, to live with respect in Creation, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our hope. In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God.

On behalf of the United Church Women (UCW) I would like to extend my thanks to everyone who helped make our annual Christmas Tea and Bazaar a great success. Whether you helped organize the day, convened a room, helped cook items for the deli, baked for the bake table, made tea, served tea, made desserts, plated desserts, unpacked Christmas items, moved tables and chairs, decorated, greeted or simply attended the bazaar…it was only a success because of the great contribution of many people…you! It was clearly a community event and showcased what a welcoming space we have at Avondale. Many thanks to all! Barb Schoch, President of UCW From Stewardship & Finance
