Joint Committee on

Basket Ball Rules

Princeton. N. J., March 1, 1920.

A. G. .SpaWinpr & Bros.,124-128 Nas5au Street,

New York City.

The vote of the Eastern IntercollegiateBasket Ball League, based upon a test ofsample balls submitted by the principalmanufacturers in the country, resulted inthe selection of the Spalding No. IM ball asthe otlicial ball for the League.

Very sincerely yours.

^j^MZ^i^f

yN^ENT^'-FlVE years ago the Secre-

tary of the Athletic League of

Young Men's Christian Associations of

North America, the lale Luther Gulick,

ordered from A. G. Spalding & Bros.,

balls for a new game that had been invent-

ed by Dr. Naisinith, andin which both he

and Dr. Gulick were much interested in

developing as an ideal athletic indoor game.

We worked with Dr. Gulick to perfect a

ball that would be the best for such a

game and our No. M Official Basket Ball

was the result. This ball was adopted

originally as official by the Y. M. C. A.,

in 1896, becoming the original and official

ball, and has been used in every important

match game since. To-day the No. Mball, with case of genuine English leather

(tanned in the Spalding tannery, Leeds,

England), is the best ball that has ever been

made for basket ball, and it is the official

ball because of the most Mgnificant adop-

tion that it is possible to secure— the adop-

tion of use. It is used to-day, as it has

been during the past twenty-five years, in

every important game both here and abroad.

The Athletic Le

ung Men's Christian As;

(Signed) Luther Gulick,

_^_ic-_>:^_\i-itl- BASKET BALL^

Spalding No. 100 Basket Ball GoalsNo. 100. The Spalding No. 100 goal-made under the Schommer patent, dated Aug. I. 1916, No. 1.193.024-is the outcome of constant efforts to makea goal without the side braces, and yet rigid and firm enough to stand roughusage. It is made of a two piece malleable iron bracket and a steel ring. It

is fastened with large plate washers. The elimination of the side braces does away with the hazzard of hitting them

in "close up shots"; of deflecting the ball at any angle, making the judge ofthe rebound a rank guess; of slowing up the game by the ball lodging be-tween the braces and the back board; of stopping the game due to a brokenside brace; and the shifting of the braces to all'kinds of angles when theywork loose.

The bracket gives a large bearing surface which gives the goal far more rigidityand strength than the old types. The bracket is mathematically constructedso as to conform with the rules and yet no ball thrown for the goal can bedeflected by the bracket. It is fool proof from hitting it with a medicine ballto using it as a horizontal bar.

INDOOR GOLFfc!

&=1

THE GAME OF INDOOR GOLFIndoor Golf is the best possible substitute for the

real game that can be found. It is played with thesame clubs and balls as used out of c'oors. The shotsare played with the same amount of strength, and aplayer is thus able, by keeping in practice all the yearround, to improve his or her game. The No. 1 andNo. 2 Indoor Nets (see diagrams) show the distancesto be made with each club in eachpocket. You can take the score card of an>-

course and, by changing the last figure

to a 5 or an to conform with thefigures on the net, will make it pos-

sible to reach the green in one, two,or three shots. The distances countto the edge of the green. For in-

stance, the first hole is 475 yardslong. We will say that on your first

shot with a driver you strike in the

center pocket, this gives you 200yards for your first stroke. Yournext stroke will be played with a

brassie and, if you hit this ball into

the top net, you are given 100 yardsfor this stroke. You now have 175

\ SPALDING KRO-FLITE GOLF IRONS

Probably the greatest difference between the average

amateur and professional golfer lies in the latter's ability to

fit the club to the shot. We all know how difficult it is to

navigate the half shots, and how, in the majority of cases,

they are attempted with disastrous results. Obviously a

complete set of irons, properly graduated and mathemati-

cally worked out, will prove of the greatest aid in cutting

off strokes, and it is with this in mind that we have pro-

duced the Kro-Flite Irons.

Starting No. Fl Driving Iron with a ' s of an inch pitch

of face, we have increased in pitch the succeeding clubs Js

of an inch each, making No. F2 Mid Iron -'4 of an inch.

No. F3 Mid Mashie 's of an inch, and No. F4 Mashie Iron

I inch. These will take care of what might be called the

long and middle distance shots. For the short game.No. F3 Mashie starts with a 1 '4 inch pitch. No. F6Mashie Niblic F/'ia inch, No. F7 Pitcher 1

'. inch, andNo. F9 Niblic 1 '4 inch. So much for the distances.

Now, as the pitch increases, there is a standard increase

in the weight of each head, which is offset by a corre-

sponding decrease in the length of the shafts, which meansthat each club has the same "balance" and "feel" as the

preceding one, and, in addition to this, each of the first

five numbers. Fl, F2, F3, F4 and F3 have exactly the sameshaped head, varying only in width of face. In other

words, instead of playing one shot with a long narrow blade,

and the next with a short wide one, each shot is played

with a club that "feels" and "looks" behind the ball just

as did the preceding one. Certainly this is bound to result

in a familarity that breeds confidence.

Another point -did you ever hit a base ball at the endof the bat> Remember the sting? Well, a golf iron

rounded too much at the nose will give exactly the samesensation. Therefore, by extending the nose a trifle andgetting the weight beyond the point of contact, as in the

Kro-Flite line, we secure that "sweetness" of "feel" that

helps make golf a joy forever

It is no exaggeration to say that probably eighty per cent,

of the golfers in the country do not face their club right in

addressing the ball. The angles of the different blades

being more or less confusing and off play or poor trajectory

results. The Kro-Flite marking (patent applied for) is anindex that directly catches the eye the minute the bail is

addressed, the index line being a prolongation of the cen-

ter line of the shaft. Squared to the line of play, yourhands naturally fall to the right position—your blade lies

right for the shot, and "direction" is improved to a very

considerable degree.

A prominent Western golfer, when first shown the club,

said: "1 consider that the greatest step forward in club

construction in years." Try it, and be convinced.

Cap the foregoing with a most rigid selection of shafts,

a most careful and expert workmanship, and the last -word

in golf club manufacture has been said.

SPALDING WOMEN'S GOLF CLUBSWe have designed the first real set of irons particularly adapted to the average

woman s stroke, the blades being modeled long, narrow, and heavy at the sole so

that the stroke played by the average woman will produce the same degree of

pitch and clear " get away " that follows the shot played by a man where the

club passes through the turf.

This special set of women's clubs consists of Mid Iron No. 12W, Mashie No.

15W. Mashie Iron No. 14W, Niblic No- 19W, Putters Nos. IWand 6W. The Mashieis more orthodox in its lines because of the variety of lies and strokes that this club

is called to negotiate. After producing and testing these clubs we feel they maybe heartily recommended to women players. Specially prepared leather grips.

in gripping, making it necessary to continually devote the whole mind to each

movement. This concentration of will power on each muscle involved is what is
