Fourth Sunday of Lent From the Pastor’s Deskw cond

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, My freshman year of high school, I had algebra eighth period, with Mr. Nappi. The reason I am able to remember this time and teacher, is because he made it memorable, not only because of the way he would explain various mathematical concepts, but because of nap time. Eighth period, the final class of the day, is a difficult time to get through no matter what the subject was, but having to take an algebra class, when all your braincells had long since given up the struggle, was not a simple task. Although Mr. Nappi would adopt a dramatic flair in explaining things to us, in order to keep our attention, there were also days when he would announce, “You know what? I’m tired. I think it’s time for a nap. Everyone just put your heads down for ten minutes.” It’s been thirty-six years, but as I reflected on all of the things that could, or should, be covered in this column, as well as all the other things that are on the list to get done around the parish, the memory came to me of Mr. Nappi, and I thought, that’s what we have been given this Laetare Sunday. It’s already been three and a half weeks since we received ashes on our foreheads, and the struggles and sacrifices we have made, as well as the failed attempts to be better, may have taken a lot out of us. I know it certainly has for me. Now we are faced with another two weeks of “regular” Lent, followed by Holy Week itself, which can be extremely difficult for us as we enter into the Passion of Christ. While every Sunday is a celebration of Easter, which is why it is not included in the forty days of Lent, many of us still feel the weight of the Season on us, and do not enter into the weekly celebration of the Lord’s Resurrection the way we should. In Her wisdom, the Church has designated this Sunday, just over halfway through Lent, as a special day of rejoicing, which is where the name actually comes from: Laetare = Rejoice. So instead of wearing ourselves ragged in our Lenten observances, and reaching Easter as spiritual skeletons, unable to appreciate the strange sensation of joy, we can take this Sunday opportunity to rejoice in the Resurrection. Since it has been a while since I wrote about the more temporal matters of the parish…. Most of you have noticed the new carpeting that has been installed in the Sanctuary and music areas of the church. This was made possible by the gracious donations of a number of our parishioners, in preparation for the 100th Anniversary, specifically the opening Mass, which was celebrated by Bishop Barres on March 2nd. I would like to take the opportunity again to thank everyone who donated their time, talent and treasure to make the opening Mass, and the reception to follow, such a wonderful experience. Many of the improvements to the church, parish center and overall parish property, are never seen by most people, but greatly improve our overall ability to serve the people of God, and enjoy the communal aspects of parish life. Members of the Knights of Columbus, Council 725, and members of the Ancient Order of Hibernians have donated much of their time to improving parish property, and making our parish more secure. At the heart of our Lady’s parish, are a number of ladies who have consistently gone above and beyond what is asked of them, especially since most of the things they have done, are done without their being asked. In order to prepare the parish for Easter, and the coming Summer months, we will be having a parish clean-up on Saturday, April 13th, beginning at 9am. This is an outside clean-up, so pray that it doesn’t rain, and bring along a rake. We are also working on the Parish Festival, taking place July 4th through 7th, and are in need of people to step up as volunteers. It has been a while since the parish has held a carnival, and while this is a fun time for kids and families, it is also a great oppor-tunity to come together as a community, as volunteers, to see old friends and make a few new ones. Now that that’s taken care of, I believe I’ll take a nap. Pax, Fr. Henry

March 31, 2019 , Fourth Sunday of Lent GOD FORGIVES The Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have removed the reproach of Egypt from you.” After forty years of wandering in the desert, this hard-headed people have finally reached the Promised Land. No more do they eat the manna in the desert, but they partake of the fruits of their new homeland. God has kept the promise to their par-ents in Egypt. Even though they were a sinful people, many times questioning God and even worshiping false gods, God has forgiven them and fulfilled the promise. The “take-away” for us is that there is no sin that is unforgivable. We may have offended our neighbors, given a bad example to someone, even worshiped the false gods of money and power. But God is a merciful God, true to the words spo-ken to us. God forgives all and calls us back to love. Quizá hayamos ofendido a nuestro prójimo, dado mal ejemplo a alguien, incluso adorado a falsos dioses como dios dinero, dios poder. Pero Dios es misericordioso, verdade-ro a las palabras que nos ha dirigido. Dios perdona todo y nos llama de regreso al amor. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
