and culture
Aims of the course
• Learn about the history of the 19th century England against the background of literature and culture
• Develop the skills of reading 19th century English literature and speaking about it
• Develop the skills of listening and writing in English
Prerequisites
• Interest in literature, history and culture• Willingness to develop this interest• English language skills ( B1 or higher)
Course topics
• Europe in the 19th century• Britain in the 19th century• Victorian Age in English Literature, Major Victorian authors• “Turn of the Century” English Literature
Writers and poets to be covered
• Charles Dickens• Bronte Sisters• George Eliot• Pre-Raphaelites• Oscar Wilde• Thomas Hardy
Methodology
• The course will be a combination of lecture and discussion
• Discussions will be based on the extracts from the works of 19th century writers (previous slide) studied at home
• We will also be using extracts from audio-books and watching scenes from the films based on the 19th century books
