This week I have had the pleasure of being visited by many students as they proudly share wonderful examples of narrative writing, reading progress and creative maths presentations. Today your child will have received a note inviting you to attend a parent teacher meeting. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to collaborate with your child’s teacher in supporting their academic progress and well-being. This week we held a Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Meeting to establish direction. Classes will be seeking volunteers to assist in the garden and kitchen – keep an eye out for notices in up coming newsletters. We have had a large number of children presenting at the office with grass ticks. These are prevalent right throughout the Coffs Harbour District. Students have been instructed not to play amongst the lomandra grass or tree garden areas; they are reminded of this each play session. Please check your child for ticks regularly. I have also attached a tick alert brochure from NSW Health for more information. A few students have also presented with head lice. Please check your child regularly. Harmony Day On Monday we will be celebrating Harmony Day at Karangi Public School. It is asked that all student’s bring in a gold coin donation on the day. Harmony Day celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. It is a day for all Australians to embrace cultural diversity and to share what we have in common. The central message for Harmony Day is that ‘everyone belongs’, reinforcing the importance of inclusiveness to all Australians. A report from the students will be in next weeks’ newsletter. We discussed various topics with Mr Macpherson and he raised them with Mrs Rovere to see whether we can implement them at Karangi PS. We have decided to do a project called Little Change 4 a Big Change where students will bring in small coins and place them in a container in class to raise money for charity. This Term we will be supporting Aaliyah Meek’s charity the Australian Himalayan Foundation (for more information see the article later on in the newsletter). We will also have a PJ Day in Week 11. The SRC have asked for more netballs for the students to use, which are going to be purchased by Mr Macpherson and Ms Hart. We are beginning a school- based basketball competition in Term 2 and we are hoping to play a friendly match against one of the Orara Valley Schools. We have also decided to start a class toy adventure, with more information about this being provided in 2 weeks. Amy Marshall and Eddy Phillips (School Captain’s) Pet Visit On Tuesday K-2 had a visit from a member of the State Governments Responsible Pet Education Program. Gina and her dog Tessa taught the children about being responsible pet owners as well as how to greet new dogs and recognizing when they are angry. The children were very engaged and were able to practice what they had learnt by patting Tessa.

AFL Next week all students at Karangi Public School will be commencing a 6 week AFL program which aims as part of our sporting program at Karangi Public School. We have been fortunate enough to secure funding through the Sporting Schools Project which will cover 100% of the cost of the AFL Program for all students. Sporting Schools is Australia’s largest school-based sports participation program to help children foster a lifelong interest in sport. Sporting Schools brings together schools and sports to help get Aussie children active in their local communities. Sporting Schools is open to all Australian primary schools, and offers quality programs developed by over 30 national sporting organisations. Year One News We are really enjoying the hands on mathematics activities this term. Last week we measured the length of our bodies out in the playground after drawing around our buddy’s body. We used

coloured paddle pop sticks as our unit of measure. Then as a class we had to answer the question “Does the tallest person in our class have the longest feet?” After more measuring of people and feet in the classroom our expert opinion is that the answer to the question is YES!

In May, my Dad and I are planning to climb Mt Kinabalu to raise money to help the people of Nepal with health, education and conservation following the April 2015 earthquake. Mt Kinabalu is the 20th highest mountain in the world and is 4096m above sea level. The two day climb and descent will be a big challenge for us. I will be training to climb at altitude now that I am off my crutches and hope to make it to the top on the 8th May. At the same time my Mum will be walking through villages of the Himalayas where the Nepalese people are still struggling to recover. If you can afford to sponsor my climb I would appreciate it. The web link is below and we will place a coin donation tin at the front desk for any small coin contributions, your donations will go to the Australian Himalayan Foundation, a small NGO helping the kids of Nepal. Any contribution, big or small will be appreciated. Donations made through this platform are secure and will be remitted directly through to my charity of choice. Thanks so much for your support!
