Dear Parishioners,

In lieu of my personal pastoral reflections for this week’s bulletin article, I would like to share with you an article that I came across this month in the July/August 2020 “Avila News” written by Marlyn Tunnell, Avila President. It is an article on the power and importance of prayer. I think you will like it. (The Avilas are a group in every parish in our diocese that make a commitment to pray 1 hour a week for vocations. Every First Friday from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m., you are invited in our church for an Avila public holy hour.)

“Bishop Sheen advises us that ‘The power of our prayer is not found in the words we speak but in lifting the mind and heart to God.’ He also said, ‘Prayer is a battle that takes effort.’ St. Padre Pio also speaks about prayer: ‘Prayers must come before everything: never tire of prayer. We become weak without it. Prayer brings us peace.’ St. Teresa of Avila, tells us, ‘…be occupied with prayer for those who are defenders of the Church and for preachers and learned men who protect her from attack.’

Today more than ever we need to be occupied with prayer as there are many battles going on all around us...Our Church is under attack along with many of the freedoms we are blessed with in our country. Due to the Corona Virus many people are dying alone and without the Sacraments, people are paralyzed with fear, there is division all around us and the battle for souls is raging. There is also a battle for the family. Sister Lucia said that Our Lady told her at Fatima that the last battle would be for the family. In the midst of all that is going on, we can take heart in what St. Paul tells us in Romans 8:37: ‘…in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.’ Jesus loves us and is with us. He has given us His Church, the Sacraments and the gifts of faith and prayer. He has given us Mary as our Mother, His Holy Word in the scriptures and the power of the Holy Spirit. Our Lady has given us the Rosary. We have everything we need. So, let’s take up the battle of prayer and continue to press on and not lose heart.

Prayer takes work and determination and we often struggle to be faithful to our daily personal prayer and to our call as Avilas to faithfully pray for priests. St. Teresa of Avila herself struggled with prayer, as we often do. However, when she struggled, she did not lose heart or give up, rather she followed the directive of her spiritual director and prayed to the Holy Spirit. Scripture tell us in Romans 8:26 that the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness for we do not know how to pray as we ought, and we are assured that

the Spirit always comes to our aid. In the power of the Holy Spirit, St. Teresa persevered and continued to pray even in the most difficult moments of her life. She said, ‘We must have a determined determination to never give up prayer.’ She knew the importance of and power of prayer, so she did not give up or lose heart, but continued on with determination in spite of difficulties.

The Holy Spirit desires to help us and give us that same determination to battle in prayer. All we have to do is ask. We certainly cannot persevere and be faithful to prayer with our own strength, but, like St. Teresa, we can call on the power of the Holy Spirit and the help of the prayers of the Communion of Saints. We are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses so that together we can continue to pray in the most difficult situations, push back the powers of darkness and will be enabled to always rejoice in our hope, be patient in tribulation, and persevere in prayer. With Jesus and the help of the Holy Spirit, we have strength for everything.

As Avilas, our main purpose is our call to pray for vocations, for the priesthood and for those in religious life. Persevering in our weekly Holy Hour before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is of utmost importance. St. Teresa knew the importance of praying for priests and that is why she made prayer for the priesthood a duty of her Carmelite community. They were all ‘…occupied with prayer for those who are defenders of the Church and for preachers and learned men who protect her from attack.’ In imitation of our patron, St. Teresa, we, too need to be occupied with prayer. Prayer must be our life, our passion, and the most important thing that we do…” (Marlyn Tunnell, Avila President)

PRO-LIFE NEWSA Perfect Gift – Part 1

Soon after the birth of my son Charlie, who has Down syndrome, a visitor asked whether he was “mild, moderate, or severe”– referring to his level of cognitive impairment. I knew the terminology, but the question shocked me. In my arms I held my beautiful baby boy, who defied

easy categorization. Clinical labels may describe some aspects of an individual’s “functioning,” but they don’t tell the whole story. Labels could not describe how Charlie’s smile lit up a room or how the sweetness of his soul had captured our hearts so completely.

Relationship Changes EverythingI have since come to understand that clinical categories also miss another important dimension of personhood: we are created to be in relationship with others. As Pope Saint John Paul II said in his encyclical Evangelium vitae (The Gospel of Life), “Within the family each member is accepted, respected and honored precisely because he or she is a person; and if any family member is in greater need, the care which he or she receives is all the more intense and attentive.”Charlie does well because we love him and attend to him out of that love. We make accommodations to compensate for the challenges that arise, and his strengths become more apparent. He plays an integral role in our family’s happiness. For example, he is our most empathetic child – the first to notice and offer comfort when we are hurt.People often say, “I could never handle a child with a disability.” But the beauty of parenting is that you aren’t given a child with a disability. You are given your child with a disability. Your child enters the world in a relationship with you, and that changes everything. You are not called to “handle” a disability. You are called to love a particular person and caring for him or her grows out of that love. The challenges that come with his diagnosis make up only a small part of life with our wonderful little boy.

Dear Father Durkee and Queen of Heaven Parishioners,

With great joy I write to tell of my gratitude.

I am Larry Furman, a proud member of the Parish of Saint Sebastian. Greetings to all of you from Father John Valencheck and the parish up north.

For the purpose of this note, I am, more importantly, the Maintencance Foreman at Camp Christopher in Bath Township. Back in May, I was contacted by Jeff Cerone, Scoutmaster of your Troop 334, Great Trail Council, inquiring about the possibity of some troop members performing their Eagle Scout projects at Camp, now or in the future. First up was to be Jack Cerone, and perhaps others to follow.

The short story is that Jack and his dad and mom all visted Camp one rainy day and decided on a project. What a joy it has been watching this young man transform a portion of our beloved Camp and, at the same time, meeting Jeff, Andrea and his sisters, as they all participated in this amazing renovation task. Jack’s project proceeded by the book, incorporating all the steps that teach these young men the disciplines intended and, at the same time, introducing them to people, places and concepts which will prove to be so valuable in life. His crew of helpers over the week’s progress was large and enthusiastic, and I am disappointed in myself for not getting to learn all their names and properly thank them individually. Perhaps, Father, you could do so for me, by publishing this “thank you” letter in your bulletin.

Suffice to say that Camp Christopher has been blessed in a huge way through Jack Cerone, the Cerone Family, Boy Scout Troop 334, and all your parishioners who help Jack fulfill his project, his dream and his vision. You have a true gem there at Queen of Heaven. Thank you for perpetuating this noble organization and encouraging, not only young men, but families, to participate so beautifully and completely in their communities and beyond.

You are all welcome to visit. Come see what heart and soul can accomplish.

NOVENA FOR OUR NATION: A BATTLE FOR THE SOUL OF OUR NATION & THE CATHOLIC CHURCHAugust 15 to October 7, 2020

The Novena will begin on August 15th, the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and will end on October 7th, the Feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary. We will have two intentions: to pray for the restoration of the faith in the United States, and to pray for the universal Church as the Amazon Synod approaches. In the United States, we continue to live in peace-less times with laws and court rulings in conflict with God’s laws; especially the disregard for the rights of the unborn, elderly and weak in our society and the attacks on marriage and family values. We

now need to implore graces from Almighty God, to lead the Pope and the Bishops to follow sound doctrine and tradition, and firmly reject modernist interpretations of the priesthood, religion, and inculturation.

CLEVELAND CATHOLIC WOMEN’S CONFERENCE – SATURDAY, OCTOBER 17
