    18. I have done (present perfect)and I did (simple past)

    A. Sometimes you can use the present perfect or the simple past ( I have lost or lost,

    he has gone or he went, they have seen or they saw,etc.)

    Wheres your key? Ive lost It. or I lost it.

    Is Jack here? No, hes gone home. or He went home.

    B. With a finished time (for example: yesterday / last week/ in 1988/ six months ago).You can only use the past (not the present perfect):

    Past + finished time

    Yesterday finished time

    We arrived last week yesterday

    (Not we have arrived) at oclock last week

    In 1986 six weeks ago

    Six months ago

    Past now

    Do not uses the present perfect (have done / have lost / have been, etc.)With a

    finished time:

    I saw Jack yesterday (not I have seen Jack yesterday.)

    Where were you last night? (Not Where have you been last night?)

    We didnt take a vacation last year. (Not We havent taken )

    I got up at 7:15. I Washed, got dressed, and then I had breakfast

    poems (not .has been a writer.has written many plays)

    Use the simple past to ask when? Or what time?:

    When did they arrive? (Not when have they arrived?)

    C. Compare:

    I have lost my key. Or I lost my key but I lost my key yesterday.

    (= I cant find it now) (Not I have lost my key yesterday)

    Bill has gone home or Bill went but Bill went home ten minutes ago.

    Home (= he isnt here now) (not Bill has gone home ten minutes ago)

    Have you had lunch? Or but When did you have lunch?

    Did you have lunch? (Not when have you had lunch?)

    Time until now (present perfect) finished time (past simple)

    Time until now finished time

    Past now past now

    Have you ever been to Spain? But did you go to Spain last year?

    (= in your life, until now)

    My friend is a written many books. But Shakespeare wrote many plays and

    Weve lived in Singapore for six poems.

    years.( = we live there now) but We lived in Taipei for six years, but

    Now we live in Singapore.
