In Albuquerque he tells classical short stories in the tradition of US writers such as William Faulkner or Richard Yates. Wacker gives his characters a real voice, which can be sad, serious, political and humorous. Flavia Company was born in Buenos Aires but moved to Barcelona, while still a child. A novelist and teacher, she is a prolific writer in Spanish and Catalan and translator of many genres, a contributor to print media, and has directed and presented TVprogrammes. The author of more than ten novels, her The Island of Last Truth has been translated into English. To commemorate the 21st year of her passing Cork World Book Fest celebrates the woman and her writings with her daughters Sally Phipps and Virginia Brownlow. Sally Phipps’ biography Molly Keane: a life has just been published to great acclaim. In conversation with Thomas McCarthy, and archive footage from RTE.

City Library - 17:00 - FREE In Between Silence, where we really exist In Between Silence, where we really exist is a collection of stories of personal significance from some of Ireland’s finest writers and artists. Composer / Producer Stano, created a musical composition for each participant. He didn’t hear the story and the participant didn’t hear the composition until they started to record. The film captures the spontaneous response of each person to the music and the impact it had on their delivery.

Sisters Rose and Emer refuse to let go of their traditions and superstitions Lisa lives in the U.S. but spent five years living in Ireland

Author and Journalist Ed O’Loughlin’s third novel Minds of Winter is built around characters who braved the cold unknown and did not return. Fay Morgan and Nelson Nilsson arrived in Inuvik, Canada -120 miles north of the Arctic Circle – and discover an unexpected link. Born in Canada, Ed grew up and lives in Ireland.

Lisa and Ed will be introduced by documentary maker and author Peadar King.

Triskel Christchurch - 20:30-21.30 - €6/€5 FRENCH WOMEN - past and present Reading and discussion with Anne Sebba, author of Les Parisiennes.As the French Presidential election draws close (April 23), Anne Sebba, biographer, lecturer and journalist, discusses women in France – past and present - in conversation with Dr. Mary Noonan, French Department UCC. Anne’s Les Parisiennes is the first in-depth account of the everyday lives of women and young girls in Paris and the aftershock of the Second World War.

City Library - 19:00 - FREEKilling for a Living: 3 Crime Writers talk murder and mystery;Alex Barclay, Sam Blake and William Ryan in conversation with Des Breen

Alex Barclay is the author of eight crime novels, and a fantasy novel for children. Alex’s Blood Runs Cold won the Ireland AM Crime Fiction Award at the Irish Book Awards in 2009.

Sam Blake is a pseudonym for Vanessa Fox O'Loughlin. Her debut novel, Little Bones spent eight weeks in the Irish top 10, with four weeks in the Number 1 slot.

William Ryan’s Captain Korolev Novels have been shortlisted for numerous awards, including the Theakstons Crime Novel of the Year, The Kerry Group Irish Fiction Award, the Crime Writers Association's New Blood and Historical Daggers and the Irish Crime Novel of the Year (three times). William lectures on the Crime Writing Masters at City University in London.

All three writers were nominated for The Books Are My Bag Crime fiction Book of the Year in 2016.

Triskel Christchurch - 20:30-21:30 - €6 / €5 LITERATURE IN TRANSLATIONSlovenian writer Ales Steger’s novel Absolution is set in Maribor, the Slovenian European Capital of Culture 2012. A dramatist and a journalist pursue a secret mission: to track down and overthrow the sinister octopus of thirteen selected persons that seem to be in control. Their journey, in the end, proves to be a journey into the heart of a European darkness.

Turkish writer Ciler Ilan’s collection of short stories Exile won the author the European Prize for Literature, 2011. Dedicated to those who have been alienated from their homeland, from their families or from society, this extraordinary collection offers readers short, vivid glimpses into other worlds from a woman writing in modern day Turkey.

Both writers will give short readings from their work and will participate in a conversation about literature in translation together with their publisher, Susan Curtis-Kojakovic, founder of Istros Press. Discussion will be facilitated by journalist and Irish Times writer Eileen Battersby.
