WELCOME
Director, Salisbury Literary Festival
A very warm welcome to the third Salisbury Literary Festival, with a varied programme of events that I hope you will be as excited about as we are.
Salisbury Literary Festival was founded in 2017. We wanted to create a festival that celebrated the rich heritage of Salisbury’s literary past, championed the very best of writing today, and inspired the next generations of writers to follow in these illustrious footsteps.
We wanted the festival to be primarily fiction-focused to set it apart from other local festivals and to keep prices as low as possible, to make it affordable and accessible for all.
This year we’ve got a fantastic line-up of events, beginning with a walking book group walk around Avebury Stone Circle with crime author Nicola
Ford on Friday morning, and finishing with a charity event for Salisbury Foodbank Trussell Trust at the Chapel nightclub on Sunday evening.
We’re delighted to be welcoming Jung Chang to Salisbury Cathedral for what promises to be a very special event on Friday evening. Our Salisbury Greats series looks at the work of Edith Olivier and Michael Gilbert (with the British Library generously offering a free novel for everyone attending). There’s a fantastic range of writers to explore on Saturday, from literary fiction to thrillers, Victorian gothic to uplit, short stories to memoir.
We also have a full day of events for children at Salisbury Library on the Saturday, kindly supported by Salisbury City Council. Sunday is our popular Writers’ Day, with a range of workshops and panel discussions with leading literary agents and publishers. The Salisbury Story Prize also returns, with the theme of rivers inspiring the festival cover.
We hope there’s plenty to inspire you, too, in our programme, and look forward to welcoming you to the festival in October.
