Welcome!

The only way of finding the limits of the possible is by going beyond them

into the impossible. – Arthur C. Clarke

Welcome to the 17th Annual Relay For Life Of Pottsville! To all veteran and rookie participants,

THANK YOU for supporting & helping Schuylkill County give back to all who need support,

comfort & services.

Over the last 17 years, the Relay For Life of Pottsville has raised more than $2.7 million in the

fight against cancer. Your hard work & dedication to Relay has assured that:

258 Cancer patients received information and/or services in the past year. 173 were

newly diagnosed for less than a year

113 cancer patients received rides or transportation assistance for cancer treatment

appointments over 12 months.

9 women facing breast cancer were offered one on one information and support

through Reach To Recovery volunteers

In the US approximately 1.2 million new cases of cancer are diagnosed each year. The lifetime

risk for being diagnosed with cancer is 1 in 2 for men and 1 in 3 for women. The American

Cancer Society, through events like Relay For Life Of Pottsville, wants everyone to know that we

are here to help, 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Your American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well be preventing cancer or detecting it early; helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing about $3.4 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year. The Schuylkill Unit American Cancer Society is located at: 16 North 4th Street Minersville, PA 17954 To learn more about us or to help, call us anytime, day or night, at 1.800.227.2345 or visit cancer.org.

History of Relay

One person can make a difference. Nowhere is that more evident than with the story of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life, which began in Tacoma, Washington. In the

mid-1980s, Dr. Gordy Klatt, a Tacoma colorectal surgeon, wanted to enhance the income of his local American Cancer Society office and to show support for all of his patients who had battled cancer. He decided to personally raise money for the fight by doing something he enjoyed – running marathons.

In May 1985, Dr. Klatt spent a grueling 24 hours circling the track at Baker Stadium at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma. He ran for more than 83 miles. That first year, nearly 300 of Dr. Klatt’s friends, family, and patients watched as he ran and walked the course. Throughout the night, friends donated $25 to run or walk with Dr. Klatt for 30 minutes. His efforts raised $27,000 to fight cancer.

While circling the track those 24 hours, Dr. Klatt thought about how others could take

part in his mission to fight cancer. He envisioned a 24-hour team relay event that could raise more money to fight cancer. Over the next few months, he pulled together a small committee to plan the first team relay event, known as the City of Destiny Classic 24-Hour Run Against Cancer.

In 1986, with the help of Pat Flynn – now known as the “Mother of Relay” – 19 teams took part in the first team Relay event on the track at the historic Stadium Bowl and raised $33,000. An indescribable spirit prevailed at the track and in the tents that dotted the infield.

About the Relay for Life

Relay For Life (often shortened to Relay) is the main volunteer-driven cancer fundraising event of the American Cancer Society. Originating in the United States, the Relay For Life event has spread to 21 countries worldwide. Relay events are held in local communities, campus universities, military bases, and in cyberspace. Although the main objective of Relay is to raise money for cancer research and cancer patients, the event is held to spread cancer awareness, celebrate the lives of survivors, remember those who lost their lives to cancer, and unite a community in the fight against cancer.

Although all Relays vary, there are a few common features:

Most participants are a part of a team, consisting of approximately 8-15 people.

A Survivor Breakfast or Dinner. Pottsville’s Relay will feature a breakfast for all survivors, courtesy of Team McDonald’s.

A Survivor Lap, which starts the Relay event.

An Opening Lap, in which all the teams take a lap around the track carrying banners.

A Luminaria Ceremony, usually with a candlelight vigil to honor those who lost their lives to cancer.

A Closing Ceremony, including one last lap around the track in which everyone takes part.

The 17th Annual Relay for Life of Pottsville will be a

24 hour event, beginning at 3:00PM on Friday, May

14th and ending at 3:00PM on Saturday, May 15th.

Various teams will camp out overnight and walk for a

24 hour period. Cancer does not take a break, nor

will the participants!

Relay Team Details All teams were given the opportunity to provide additional information. The following

submissions share basic background information about the team, their motivation for doing

Relay, special fundraisers held and/or membership info.

Team Summary:

Blue Mt. multi-schools teams’ participation in Relay for Life began 16 years ago when middle

school “Kids Saving Kids” members encouraged district employees and students to support this

worthwhile cause. Since then, Blue Mt. has raised over $120,000 for the American Cancer

Society. For more than 14 years, Blue Mt. Elementary West has coordinated bake sales,

poinsettia sales and faculty room snack sales. In addition, they have sold Relay candles,

program ads, car magnets, t-shirts, bears and buttons. In April, students participate in a “Coins

for a Cure” fundraising contest where the classroom that raises the most money wins a pizza

party. But our best fundraiser takes place in March when a basket raffle—with baskets and gift

certificates donated by staff, parents and local businesses to correlate with our West Fest.

During this year’s event, we will raffle off several baskets including “Pink Power” (breast cancer

awareness items), a Relay for Life picnic cooler with goodies and many others. Also, we have a

snack sale of Swedish fish, Pixie Sticks, Nerds, ring pops and pretzels. Fun games will be

available for a $1.00 donation with prizes for all.

All of us have been touched by cancer in one way or another. Three years ago, we lost our

beloved middles school teacher, Mrs. Barb Challenger, to this dreaded disease. Our hope is that

as we walk, we do so in support of survivors, to remember our loved ones and strive for a cure.

Stop by our tent areas #27, 28, 29 and 30 to lend your support and friendship. Thank You! ~

Mrs. Margaret Davis (Captain) and Mrs. Kristin Frederick, Mrs. Amy Moran, Miss Ashley

Romanot, Mrs. Janet Hansbury, Miss Jenn Gorski, and Mr. Jeff Davis (Co-Captains) and High

Scholl student representatives: Allison Eberly and Chase Moon.

Team Captains: Kimberly Chernosky and Kevin Wasser

Team Summary: The Coal Region ChemoSabes – “Warriors Against Cancer” is a newly formed team participating in the Pottsville Relay for Life for the first time. The Coal Region ChemoSabes (pronounced Key-mo-saw-bees)want to make a difference! Schuylkill County may be a unique region, but we know cancer knows no boundaries. As Warriors Against Cancer, the Coal Region ChemoSabes demonstrate the pride, strength and honor of the people of the anthracite coal region. We are here to celebrate all the Survivors, show our support to all those still battling and to remember the many loved ones who have passed.

The team is lead by husband and wife duo, Kim Chernosky and Kevin Wasser of Minersville, PA. Kim has battled cancer on and off since 1988. Living with Stage IV breast cancer, she has vowed to never, never, never give up. Other team member ‘Warriors’ hail from areas around the coal region, including Ashland, Minersville, Pottsville and Pine Grove, just to name a few! Each Coal Region ChemoSabe has their own personal reasons for doing Relay with one common goal at the forefront: to put an end to cancer!

For Relay, the Coal Region ChemoSabes have raised funds through a variety of local events including a Zumba Exercise Party, a Bean Soup Sale, “Get Slapped by Jack for Cancer” at Slapjack’s Bar & Grill, program ad sales and Stars & Moons campaign. Our biggest fundraiser was “May Day for Relay” on May 1st which was a pigroast & picnic held at the South Cass Citizen’s Fire Company Picnic Grove. Over 400 people attended! At Relay, the team will host a snack stand--“The Dollar Gourmet” featuring coal region candy (homemade club sandwiches, coal candy & mozhee) along with chocolate covered pretzels, chips & strawberries—Just $1 buys you a snack! The team will be selling custom made Swarovski Crystal jewelry in a variety of cancer ‘awareness’ colors. The will also be face painting, hair braiding and FREE “Little ChemoSabes” feather headbands for kids of all ages! We also have a “Skook” Gift Pack, an autographed copy of “Breaker Boys” by author David Fleming and a $50 Gift Certificate for Morgan’s Service—all to be raffled off! Last but not least, come see a demonstration by students of Driscoll Martial Arts Institute at 8PM Friday night! Please come visit us at tent Sites #58, 59, 60 & 61.

Team Name: TEAM CHRISTINE Team Captain: Christine Benke Team Summary:

TEAM CHRISTINE was born three years ago in honor of our only sister, Christine (George) Benke, who was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in December 2006. Our team motto is “Where this is life, there is HOPE!” It’s the first thing our great Aunt Honya said after hearing the outcome of Christine’s surgery and it’s what keeps us going. The reality of the disease has made us all realize how important it is to love and appreciate whom and what we have in our lives and to make the most of each and every day, no regrets! Having reached the 3 year mark being cancer free last December, Christine is thriving and feeling great! We are here to celebrate her victory and good health, to support other family members and friends who are Survivors, and to remember the many beautiful souls who lost their battle to cancer but whom we have had the privilege to know and love, especially Christine’s mother-in-law, Elaine Benke, who lost her fight in May 2006 and our Great Uncle John Motko, who lost his fight in April 2008. We dedicate our Relay this year to our Great Uncle Bill Motko, a great man whom we lost to bladder cancer this past October, and to Ellie Mitchell, our charismatic, unforgettable, and irreplaceable teammate and friend who passed away shortly after last year’s Relay. TEAM CHRISTINE is comprised of our parents, siblings, in-laws, relatives, children, and friends. Prior to coming to Pottsville as a Team, our family relayed in three different states, Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. We decided to combine forces and bring it home to our hometown Relay for Life of Pottsville, (we’re actually from Mar-Lin, close enough). Having this team makes it easier for our entire family to participate together and to involve more local relatives and friends. We are happy to be home! During our second year at the Pottsville Relay, we were very successful. We came in 3rd Place for Single Team Fundraising and brought in close to $4000. We were also awarded the Most Spirited Award, and were recognized as an “E” Team for raising over $1000 online. We have a lot of fun events planned at our site this year for the whole family, including Kids’ Games with prizes, Bake Sale, Basket Raffle, and 50/50 Raffle. Please stop by Site #70 and say hello to TEAM CHRISTINE!

Sole Sisters

Team Name: Sole Sisters Team Captain: Jane Pritiskutch Team Summary: This is Sole Sisters’ first year as participants. We are all ‘old friends’—some of us—for 30 years—that all worked together at Rarings Shoe Store. We’ve kept in touch over the years. In the last few years we’ve grown even closer and meet regularly. Two of our gals are cancer survivors! We not only want to honor them, we’d like to give something back to the community. Since we are ‘virgin’ participants, we haven’t gotten into full gear this year, however, we have some solid ideas for building upon for future events! We look forward to boning together as a team, making a difference in the cancer world and having some fun in the process. We might be a small team, but the “Sole Sisters” have a whole lot of SOUL!
