WHEN the Angus Australia Board decided to embark on the Angus Sire Benchmarking Program (ASBP) nearly three years ago, it did so with great expectation that the largest progeny test program ever con- ducted for a single breed in Australia would set the foundation for the future of the breed. With a total of 122 elite Angus bulls now included in the program, a great deal of informa- tion is being collected to further Angus genetics in Australia. The third cohort join- ing completed a short time ago, included bulls from every Australian state, plus six bulls from New Zealand and two from USA. www.townandcountrymagazine.com.au Town and Country Magazine, Week Commencing Monday, August 12, 2013 - 7 6 - Town and Country Magazine, Week Commencing Monday, August 12, 2013 www.townandcountrymagazine.com.au SHARE IN THE ONSLOW ADVANTAGE Doug & Barbara Tozer ONSLOW Wallendbeen (02) 6943 2690 HELMSMAN SALE 1pm 20th August, 2013 60 BULLS [email protected] 50 YEARLING BULLS 10 2YR OLD BULLS ONSLOW SOLD 50 STEERS AVG $1,117 72 STEERS AVG $990 HEGGATON FAMILY 198 STEERS AVG $714 NIGEL CAMPBELL 6mth STEERS AVG $630 RM1950672 Email 2013 BULL SALE 51 Bulls on sale on Saturday, August 24th at 1pm at 456 Strathaird Lane, Taralga. These young sires were used in a fixed-time AI program over 2,300 Angus cows in five co- operator herds in NSW and Victoria, using syn- chronisation products supplied by Bayer Australia. A record high concep- tion rate of almost 60per cent was achieved in the third year of joining of the Angus Sire Benchmarking Program. Six local bulls con- tribute to the elite sires participating in cohort three of the program. Alloura Fourth Dimension F27 was nom- inated by Mandy and Mark Wales from Alloura Angus, one of two bulls nominated for the 2012 Benchmark joining. Alloura Angus has concentrated on easy calving, balanced per- formance in their bulls and F27 demonstrates this approach. The herd is well recorded and F27 has high accuracy figures for a young sire without progeny recorded yet. Alloura Get Up-and- Go G19 is the second bull nominated by Alloura for Cohort three. He is a younger bull and also demonstrates the Wales concentration on easy calving, moderate bulls with good carcase characteristics. G19 has EBVs indication light Birth Weight, above aver- age growth moderate mature size and heavy carcase weight with IMF per cent in the top 30pc of the Angus 2011 born calves. Rennylea F266 was retained for use in the Rennylea herd and was nominated by Brian and Lucinda Corrigan. F266 is a HBR registered son of the NZ bred Te Mania Infinity. He has some calves already recorded through semen use by a number of herds and is an extremely low birth weight sire with good growth and high carcase and $Index figures. Hazeldean F1023 was nominated by Hazeldean Pastoral Company. He is a son of Te Mania Berkley B1 who sold to Hazeldean in 2010. F1023 has a simi- lar set of EBVs to his father with trait leading Calving Ease, light Birth Weight and good growth to all weights with high EMA and positive Rib Fat and IMFpc. Used as a yearling, F1023 has calves on the ground. Lawsons General G1730 was nominated by the consortium that cur- rently have shares in him, including ABS Australia. General is by Lawsons Tank B1155 who was used in Cohort one of the Benchmarking Program and now has steers preparing for slaughter. Lawsons General was the record selling bull at Lawson’s 2012 sale sell- ing for $37,000 after per- forming at the top of a large contemporary group. His figures indicate Calving Ease, low Birth Weight with good growth and high carcase value. (Photo 1) KO Dynamite F80 was purchased by Hazeldean Pastoral Company at last year’s KO sale. F80 is the first son of Mohen Dynamite 1356 to be included in the Benchmarking Program. He has EBVs indicat- ing average Birth Weight and good growth and Scrotal Size with above average EMA, positive fat and good marbling. Structurally, he is well balanced with visual muscling and good testi- cles. (Photo 2) Results for the feed intake and efficiency test- ing of steers generated from the first cohort join- ing in 2010 is now on hand, and heifer progeny from that cohort are being joined by natural service in the co-operator herds to provide high quality daughter fertility data. Over 1,300 calves resulting from the second cohort joining in 2011 have been recorded in the co-operator herds. All of the information is being uploaded to the Angus Australia data base and incorporated into Angus Breedplan analyses as the data is submitted. Angus Australia has recently decided to extend the project to test further cohorts of bulls. A call for the fourth cohort of Angus elite sires is currently under- way.
