WHEN the AngusAustralia Board decidedto embark on the AngusSire BenchmarkingProgram (ASBP) nearlythree years ago, it did sowith great expectationthat the largest progenytest program ever con-
ducted for a single breedin Australia would set thefoundation for the futureof the breed.
With a total of 122elite Angus bulls nowincluded in the program,a great deal of informa-tion is being collected to
further Angus genetics inAustralia.
The third cohort join-ing completed a shorttime ago, included bullsfrom every Australianstate, plus six bulls fromNew Zealand and twofrom USA.

Local bulls contribute to record insemination resultsMany of these bulls
were sale-toppers or bullsselected for use back inthe herd from some ofAustralia’s leadingAngus breeders.
These young sireswere used in a fixed-timeAI program over 2,300Angus cows in five co-operator herds in NSWand Victoria, using syn-chronisation productssupplied by BayerAustralia.
A record high concep-tion rate of almost 60percent was achieved in thethird year of joining ofthe Angus SireBenchmarking Program.
Six local bulls con-tribute to the elite siresparticipating in cohortthree of the program.
Alloura FourthDimension F27 was nom-inated by Mandy andMark Wales from AllouraAngus, one of two bullsnominated for the 2012Benchmark joining.
Alloura Angus hasconcentrated on easycalving, balanced per-formance in their bullsand F27 demonstratesthis approach. The herdis well recorded and F27
has high accuracy figuresfor a young sire withoutprogeny recorded yet.
Alloura Get Up-and-Go G19 is the second bullnominated by Alloura forCohort three.
He is a younger bulland also demonstrates theWales concentration oneasy calving, moderatebulls with good carcasecharacteristics. G19 hasEBVs indication lightBirth Weight, above aver-age growth moderatemature size and heavycarcase weight with IMFper cent in the top 30pcof the Angus 2011 borncalves.
Rennylea F266 wasretained for use in theRennylea herd and wasnominated by Brian andLucinda Corrigan. F266is a HBR registered sonof the NZ bred Te ManiaInfinity. He has somecalves already recordedthrough semen use by anumber of herds and is anextremely low birthweight sire with goodgrowth and high carcaseand $Index figures.
Hazeldean F1023 wasnominated by HazeldeanPastoral Company.
He is a son of TeMania Berkley B1 whosold to Hazeldean in2010. F1023 has a simi-lar set of EBVs to hisfather with trait leadingCalving Ease, light BirthWeight and good growthto all weights with highEMA and positive RibFat and IMFpc.
Used as a yearling,F1023 has calves on theground.
Lawsons General
G1730 was nominated bythe consortium that cur-rently have shares in him,including ABS Australia.
General is byLawsons Tank B1155who was used in Cohortone of the BenchmarkingProgram and now hassteers preparing forslaughter.
Lawsons General wasthe record selling bull atLawson’s 2012 sale sell-ing for $37,000 after per-
forming at the top of alarge contemporarygroup.
His figures indicateCalving Ease, low BirthWeight with good growthand high carcase value.(Photo 1)
KO Dynamite F80was purchased byHazeldean PastoralCompany at last year’sKO sale. F80 is the firstson of Mohen Dynamite1356 to be included inthe BenchmarkingProgram.
He has EBVs indicat-ing average Birth Weightand good growth andScrotal Size with aboveaverage EMA, positivefat and good marbling.Structurally, he is wellbalanced with visualmuscling and good testi-cles. (Photo 2)
Results for the feedintake and efficiency test-ing of steers generatedfrom the first cohort join-ing in 2010 is now onhand, and heifer progenyfrom that cohort are
being joined by naturalservice in the co-operatorherds to provide highquality daughter fertilitydata. Over 1,300 calvesresulting from the secondcohort joining in 2011have been recorded in theco-operator herds. All ofthe information is beinguploaded to the AngusAustralia data base andincorporated into AngusBreedplan analyses as thedata is submitted.
Angus Australia hasrecently decided to
extend the project to testfurther cohorts of bulls.A call for the fourthcohort of Angus elitesires is currently under-way.
