The 3rd MEDICA MEDICINE + SPORTS CONFERENCE´s main objective is the interdisciplinary exchange be-tween international sports medicine experts, professional athletes, the sporting goods and healthcare indus-try.

The MEDICA MEDICINE + SPORTS CONFERENCE will take place for the third time on November 17th/18th 2015 in Dusseldorf. It will be again one of the highlights at MEDICA 2015, the world´s largest medical trade show with more than 130,000 visitors and 4,831 exhibitors.

The MEDICA has established this cooperation platform in 2013 to foster new exchange formats, new sport medical therapies, and innovative products for prevention, recovery and population health management. Connecting sports medicine and innovative technologies will result in new and breakthrough advancements. Be part of this vibrant ecosystem and network with new partners by joining the 3rd MEDICA MEDICINE + SPORTS CONFERENCE.

Prof. Dr. Norbert Bachl is a professor at the Department of Sports and Exercise Physiology in the Centre for Sports Science and University Sports of the University of Vienna. Prof. Dr. Bachl also serves as Director of the Austrian Institute for Sport Medicine, Vice President of FIMS and Hon-orary President of EFSMA. In addition to this, he is a member of the Medical Commission of IOC, EOC, ÖOC and of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. Prof Dr. Bachl acts as the Head of the Medical Commission of the UCI.

Alberto Bichi Speaker & Expert Committee

Alberto Bichi is the Secretary General of FESI. Following a working experience at the European Commission’s cabinet of Commissioner Vanni d’Archirafi, he integrated the Foreign Trade Associ-ation (FTA) and became member of the Board. He developed and improved the Federation of the European Sporting Goods Industry (FESI), became Member Services Manager in 1996, Secretary General in 2000 and continuously improved FESI’s overall reputation as the unique voice in Europe for the sporting goods industry. Prof. Dr. med. Wilhelm Bloch Speaker

Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Bloch is a professor at the German Sport University and the head of the De-partment of Molecular and Cellular Sport Medicine at the Institute of Cardiovascular Research and Sport Medicine. A recipient of the Venia Legendi for Anatomy and Cell Biology, University of Cologne 2000 (best habilitation 2000 at the medical faculty of the University of Cologne), Prof. Dr. Bloch derived the additional membership of the Medical Faculty of the University of Cologne 2005. He has served as a member of the scientific board of the German Society of Prevention and Sport Medicine since 2008 and as of 2011, chairman of this scientific board. Together with this, Prof. Dr. Bloch has been the Vice President of the German Sport Medicine Society since 2011, and from 2012, a member of the Scientific Committee European College of Sport Science (ECSS).

Juliana Chua Speaker

Juliana Chua is the Principal at Zensorium’s Business Innovation Group, a start-up initiative of Japanese multinational corporation Nitto Denko. Before her current role in the company, Ms. Chua served as Principal Analyst leading the Business Development and Intellectual Property Group. Juliana has over 10 years of experience in the new technologies industries with a background in Computer Science and Intellectual Property Law. A fitness enthusiast with a keen interest in em-powering people to take better care of themselves, Juliana also is an avid volunteer, participating in activities for to improve lives for the less fortunate.

Prof. Dr. med. Joseph Cummiskey Speaker

Dr. Joseph Cummiskey is a Senior Lecturer in Sports and Exercise Medicine at University College Cork in Cork, Ireland. Dr. Cummiskey is a member of the International Olympic Committee’s Med-ical Commission in sub-commission on Medicine and Science in Sport. In addition to this, he is a member of a variety of associations and commissions including the FIMS Interfederal Commis-sion, the Amateur International Boxing Association, the International Cricket Committee and the International Federation of Bobsleigh and Skeleton; Therapeutic Use Exemption Commission. Dr. Cummiskey is also a part of the Medical Commission of the International Union of Cycling (UCI).

Heidi Dohse Keynote Speaker

Heidi Dohse, a Senior Program Manager at Google, is the founder of Tour de Heart, an initiative to share how using Technology + Medicine + Activity can be a path for Heart Patients to get their active lives back. As a lifelong heart patient, Heidi did not want to be a victim of heart disease. Instead she wanted to pursue her desire to become an athlete and competitive cyclist. After hav-ing open heart surgery in 2010, with the help of wearable devices and technologies, Heidi had the information she needed to go from the hospital bed to back on the bike and across the finish line of her first bike race. The goal of Tour de Heart is to empower patients to become accountable and knowledgeable for their health care by having the information that they need. This goal is support-ed by the work she does at Google.

Prof. Dr. med. Martine Duclos Speaker

Dr. Martine Duclos is an endocrinologist and physiologist with a specialty in biology and medicine of exercise. She is the director of the Department of Sport medicine at the University Hospital of Clermont-Ferrand and a researcher within the research unit “Human Nutrition” (INRA-Universite d’Auvergne). She performs clinical research related to the study of the beneficial effects of phys-ical activity for the general public and more particularly for the persons with chronic diseases or conditions, such as obesity, cardiometabolic disease or cancers, as well as in the context of aging. She has a strong interest in studying hormonal adaptation to exercise. She is a member of “Euro-pean Healthy Lifestyle Alliance” and of the “International Chair on Cardiometabolic Risk (ICCR), which advocate for lifestyle improvement for combatting obesity and cardio-metabolic diseases.

Prof. Dr. Alexander Ferrauti Speaker

Prof. Dr. Alexander Ferrauti is dean of the Faculty of Sport Science at the Ruhr University of Bo-chum (Germany). He is professor for training science and head of the Department for Training & Exercise Science. Prof. Dr. Ferrauti is responsible for the Department of Sport Science in the Ger-man Tennis Federation and an A Level Tennis Coach. His special working fields are training and testing, energy metabolism and nutrition. In tennis, he has experiences as coach and tournament player as well as an author of more than 100 scientific and practical journal articles and books about coaching.

Prof. Dr. Carl Foster Keynote Speaker

Carl Foster, Ph.D. is an exercise physiologist with interests ranging from clinical physiology to sport physiology. He is Professor of Exercise & Sport Science & Director of Research in the Clinical Exercise Physiology Graduate Program at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. He is Visiting Professor in of Human Movement Science at the Vrije Universiteit-Amsterdam. Mr. Foster received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas- Austin in 1976, with post-doctoral work at Ball State Uni-versity. He worked at Sinai Samaritan Medical Center in Milwaukee from 1977-1998 leading the Clinical Physiology program from 1988-1998. He has also published ~ 400 scientific papers or chapters and 20 books, monographs, position stands and videos.

Dr. Adrian Hutber Expert Committee

Dr. Hutber was appointed Vice President of Exercise is MedicineR at the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) in 2008, after serving as the vice president of a fitness corporation and as the Director of the Distance Education Division of the world’s largest physical activity publisher, Human Kinetics. Dr. Hutber also acts as a Professor at Northumbria University and is the Coor-dinator of the UK Space Biomedicine Consortium. In addition to this, he has numerous publica-tions in physiology and sports medicine scientific journals, has authored the Pre-Exercise Health Screening course (Human Kinetics, 2001), is a Board member of the National Advisory Council for Cancer and Exercise in the USA, and continues to serve on the editorial board or as a reviewer for medical journals.

Dr. Birgit Böhm Speaker

Dr. Birgit Böhm is a postdoctoral researcher and lecturer at the Institute of Preventive Pediatrics at the Technische Universität München (TUM). She was awarded with a Master degree in Sport Science from the German Sport University Cologne and completed her doctoral studies at TUM. Her research focusses on non-invasive diagnostic methods in pediatric cardiovascular prevention. Her interdisciplinary work combines sport science, medicine, technology and exergaming in inter-vention studies.

Prof. Dr. med. Klaus-Michael Braumann Speaker

After medical education in Sports and Exercise Physiology, surgery and cardiology, Prof. Dr. med. Braumann became a professor for Sports medicine at the University of Hamburg in 1993. He has been a team doctor of national teams in Olympics and World Championships and worked in pro-fessional teams (football, ice hockey). His main scientific topics are the development of exercise therapy in diseases. He is Dean of the faculty of Psychology and Human movement at the Hamburg University and the active President of the German Society of Sports Medicine and Prevention.

Susanne Hollmann Speaker

Dr. Silvia Binder Speaker

Dr. Silvia Binder is the CEO of the Ondamed Companies in New York and Germany, and the Founder of The Binder Institute for Personalized Medicine in Southern Germany. Her career led her to New York in 1989 where she lived for 22-years until moving back to Germany in 2010. Silvia received her N.D. degree from the College of Naturopathy in London, U.K. followed by her Ph.D. degree in naturopathy. Silvia has been helping chronically ill patients from all around the world, she is on the Advisory Boards of the Medical Wellness Association and the Occidental Institute Research Foundation, and a member of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. She is also involved with clinical studies at various university clinics, lectures around the world, and offers specialized courses for healthcare practitioners.

Prof. Dr. Tim Meyer Expert Committee

Prof. Dr. Tim Meyer is team physician of the German national football team since 2001. After study-ing at Hanover Medical School, Prof. Meyer also graduated in Sport Science from the Göttingen University. He received his doctorate in 1997, and was awarded the Arno-Arnold-Prize for Sports Medicine for his dissertation “Therapeutic use of endurance training in panic disorders”. In 2006, he took over the chair in sports medicine at Paderborn University. In October 2008 he was appoint-ed to the professorship for sports and preventive medicine at the Saarland University. In 1999 and 2001 Prof. Meyer supervised the U20 football team at the World Championships in Nigeria and Argentina. From 1999 to 2001 Meyer also supervised the German A2 football team.

Marco Peluso Speaker

Marco Peluso is the CEO and Founder of award-winning consumer healthcare company Qardio. Mr. Peluso´s professional career later spanned fourteen years in the financial industry, where he became a partner at one of Europe’s most established hedge funds, managing a multi-billion dollar investment portfolio. After this, he then set out to establish the next frontier of healthcare by founding Qardio, which has since won several awards and pre-eminent industry recognitions including two CES 2015 Innovation Awards and Red Dot Awards: Product Design 2014 and 2015.

Shaun Rahimi Speaker

Shaun Rahimi is founder and CEO of CUR, a company that develops products that help you reduce pain and stay active without drugs. Shaun was involved with the design of neurostimulator and cardiovascular implants at Abbot Labs, Neuropace and Sadra Medical. He has worked on research and development for over 40 different types of medical devices.

Prof. Dr. med. Rüdiger Reer Expert Committee

Prof. Dr. Reer is Secretary General of the German Sports Medicine Association DGSP (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Sportmedizin und Prävention) and Deputy Director of exercise science of Ham-burg University, Germany. He is member of the DGSP, American College of Sports Medicine, the European College of Sport Science and Hamburg Sports Medicine Association. Focus of his research is on spiroergometry of swimmers in performance diagnostics, exercise therapies for different disease patterns. In 2000, he won the International Science Award (ICSSPE) in Clinical Sciences in Brisbane, Australia.

Marc Saab Speaker

Marc Saab is the Director of Peak Performance for Montreal based Thought Technology Ltd. Since 2006, Marc has been collaborating with top athletic directors and sports psychologists in the field to create custom solutions for peak performance biofeedback and neurofeedback. More recently, he has worked with professional and Olympic teams, as well as National Training centers in North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East to implement similar technology and methodology to better prepare elite athletes for performance. Marc holds a Masters of Biomedical Engineering from McGill University and the Montreal Neurological Institute. His published research includes au-tomatic early detection of epileptic seizures and other neurophysiological events in scalp and depth electroencephalography, and several articles discussing neurophysiology and peak performance.

Alberto Sanna Speaker

Alberto Sanna is the Director of the Center for Advanced Technologies in Health and Wellbeing at the Scientific Institute San Raffaele in Milan. He is in charge of three main research programs; SMARTer and SAFer HOSPITAL R&D; focusing on Patient Safety and healthcare process re-engi-neering, SMARTer and HEALTHIer LIFE R&D; for Disease Prevention and Well-Being Promotion, focusing on personalized and pervasive e-Services to promote healthier lifestyles, with particular focus on nutrition, physical activity, health literacy and edutainment and SMARTer and HEALTHIer CITY R&D Program and Living Lab for the City of the Future, focusing on the re-engineering of the urban environment in the perspective of Internet of Services and Service Robotics, to enable healthier and more eco-sustainable lifestyles for Individuals and communities.

Dr. med. Christian Schneider Expert Committee

Dr. Christian Schneider, MD PhD, is an orthopedic surgeon and specialist in sports medicine, the head of Back and Sports Orthopedic Institute in SCHÖN KLINIK Munic Harlaching and Medical Expert Com-mittee of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB). Dr. Schneider is Chairman and board member of several associations and federations, including the German Physicians Association, GOTS (German Society for Orthopedic-Traumatologic Sports Medicine), FIMS (International Federation of Sports Medicine) as well as Head of DOSB-Sports Physiotherapy for the German Oympic Sports Con-federation (DOSB). Dr. Schneider works as consultant of the Olympic Base Camp Bavaria and other sports organizations. He was part of the Olympic medical staff in the three previous Olympics and also Medical Commission of the European Olympic Committee in 1st European Games in Baku 2015.

Dr. Otello Sorato Speaker

Dr. Otello Sorato is the Founder and CEO of Mind Room Lab s.r.l., a leading company in Italy that deals with Peak Performance. Dr. Sorato has long worked in “best performance” in elite sports and corporate performance alike. In 2012, he patented at “Italian Patent and Trademark Office of the Italian Ministry of Economic Development” the “Mind Chair”, the first instrument in the world complete with hardware and software for the realization of peak performance Biofeedback and Neurofeedback. The Mind Chair is the most advanced instrumentation for improving personal performance. In 2014, Dr. Sorato was awarded the diploma of Honorable Mention by the European Federation of Athletics, for innovation in the sport with the realization of the Mind Chair.

Prof. Dr. med. Frank Mayer Speaker

Prof. Dr. Mayer is the Medical Director of the University Outpatient Clinic - Center of Sports Med-icine at Potsdam University. He is an orthopedic surgeon and specialist in Sports Medicine. His main focus in research is the efficiency of conservative treatment strategies in prevention and rehabilitation of sports injuries in high-performance athletes as well as the overall population. Be-sides daily patient care, Prof. Dr. Mayer is a consultant in different athletic teams and responsible for the sports medicine in the Federal state of Brandenburg, Germany. Dr. Benoît Mariani Speaker

After an engineering degree from Supélec Paris (F) in 2007, Dr. Mariani obtained a PhD from EPFL (CH) in 2012. He has cumulated 8 years of experience in the field of wearable sensor technology. He has worked on various academic and industrial projects in movement disorder and rehabilita-tion including gait, running, and swimming with patients and athletes. His expertise covers sensor design, signal processing algorithm, and data analysis. In 2013, he has cofounded Gait Up SA, a spin-off company of CHUV and EPFL. Gait Up provides innovative solutions based on wearable sensors for sports and clinics. At Gait Up, Dr. Mariani assumes the role of Chief Executive Officer, ensuring a fruitful collaboration within the team and its partners, with a particular emphasis on customers’ needs.

Prof. Dr. Vesa Linnamo Speaker

Prof. Dr. Vesa Linnamo, a professor in sports technology in the Department of Biology of Physical Activity, University of Jyväskylä, Vuokatti, Finland. He received his Ph.D. in Biomechanics from the University of Jyväskylä, Finland in 2002 with research interests involving motor control and neuro-muscular adaptation along with sports biomechanics, especially in Nordic winter sports. Linnamo has worked in different positions in University of Jyväskylä since 1992. In addition, he has almost 30 years of experience in basketball, including 8 years as a top league player and over 20 years as a coach in different adult and junior series. Prof. Dr. Linnamo has also published 57 peer reviewed international original articles, 22 international book chapters or editor of books, published 125 congress abstracts and chaired or co-chaired 7 international congresses or seminars.

Dr. Joni Kettunen Speaker

Mr. Joni Kettunen, PhD, is a pioneer in physiological analytics and its applications. He is leading Firstbeat at the cutting edge of heartbeat analytics for wearables, fitness devices, wellbeing ser-vices and professional sports. As of today, Firstbeat analytics is used by hundreds of elite sports teams, thousands of corporations, and millions of consumers to improve their performance and wellbeing. Before founding Firstbeat in 2002, Joni has published research in the areas of psycho-physiology, behavioral medicine, autonomic nervous system function and stress quantification. Joni received his PhD from the University of Helsinki in 1999.

Prof. Dr. med. Bernd Wolfarth Keynote Speaker

Univ. Prof. Dr. med. Bernd Wolfarth is director at the Department of Sports Medicine at the Hum-boldt University and the Charité University Medicine Berlin. After his medical studies in Freiburg, and 10 years as a deputy chief at the Department of Sports Medicine at the Technical University Munich he moved in 2014 to his current position in Berlin. Prof. Dr. Wolfarth is head physician of the German ski association and for the German biathlon team since several years. Since 2002 he worked with the German Olympic team. He served as the head physician for the German Olympic Team in the Vancouver 2010, London 2012 and Sotchi 2014 Olympic Games. Since 2011 he is chair of the medical expert committee of the German Olympic Sports Federation.

Patrick Thumm Speaker

Patrick Thumm is Co-Founder and Managing Director “Sport Science” at ANTELOPE.CLUB and has his background in exercise physiology. He holds a Master degree in sport science and since the beginning of 2013, he has been working as a lecturer and PhD student at the Sensorimotor Performance Lab of the University of Constance. There he focuses on the area of performance diagnostics mainly in endurance sports. Thumm accounts to the TOP10 stand-up paddlers in Ger-many and is furthermore a triathlete and experienced volleyball player.

Dr. Christine Stucke Speaker

Psychologist Dipl. psych. Dr. paed Christine Stucke works as a scientific assistant at the depart-ment of sport science at the Otto-von Guericke University Magdeburg, Germany. She completed master degrees in pedagogic studies in Sports and German as well as Psychology and she received her doctoral degree in the field of movement science. She is specialized in scientific researches of sports and its influence to the personality development of young athletes. In collaboration with the “Olympic Sports Centre Saxony-Anhalt”, Dr. Stucke serves as leading sport psychologist to prepare athletes in the field of swimming, rowing, canoeing and shooting for a series of national and international championships as well as Olympic Games.

Dr. med. James Stray-Gundersen Speaker

James Stray-Gundersen, M.D., Chief Medical Officer, KAATSU Global. Dr. Stray-Gundersen has worked with numerous Olympians in various sport disciplines advising on training for Maximal Hu-man Performance. His primary research was altitude training, performance training, and anti-dop-ing work. He has served on International Medical Committees that include the International Olympic Committee, FIFA, International Biathlon Committee, International Ski Federation, the World Anti Dop-ing Association (WADA) and the US Anti Doping Agency (USADA). Dr. Stray-Gundersen is the Sports Science Director for the US Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA), and leads Human Performance and Altitude Camps for Olympic Athletes as well as Navy Seals. He runs The SG Performance Medi-cine Center and Sport Technologies in Park City, Utah, located inside The Center of Excellence USSA.

Marco Suvilaakso Speaker

Marco Suvilaakso is the Director of Product Management for Polar with more than 20 years of international business, product development, and marketing experience. In 2002, Mr. Suvilaakso was tapped to lead - from conception to execution - Polar’s global running product category, effec-tively making it one of the company’s most successful offerings. He continued to play an integral role at Polar through major milestones, including: the world’s first phone syncing sports watch/heart rate monitor in 2006, and the first integrated training system alongside original smart ac-tivity monitors in 2007.
