Pointe-Saint-Charles, also known as The Point, is a fast developing neighborhood in the South West
borough of Montreal. The area is currently under heavy re-development with new bars, restaurants and
ample nightlife in the immediate surroundings. Acclaimed restaurants located just across the canal includes
Joe Beef, Grinders and Brasseurs de Montreal. The location provides easy access to employees by metro bus
or bike and a short 5 minute drive south from downtown.
Historically a working class neighborhood, this borough has quickly transformed into a true live, work and
play centre. Moreover, recent large tenants moving into the area such as Yellow Pages, RR Donnelley and
Fujitsu, have confirmed this as a centre for young high tech talent.

This borough south of Montreal’s Downtown Core is characterized by its historical significance. Named in
honor of Charles Le Moyne who acquired the land in 1654, it was taken over by religious communities who
mainly used the land for farm activities. The Saint-Gabriel House was thus established on one of these farms
and is one of the oldest standing buildings in Montreal.
Between 1826 and 1930, the rural landscape undergoes an intensive industrial explosion with the creation
of the Lachine Canal. Along with the construction of the Victoria Bridge, this industrial boom stimulated
economic and population growth and naturally, resulted in a real estate boom. Towards the end of the 19th
century, Pointe-Saint-Charles was the largest industrial sector in Montreal and Canada. Following the Great-
Depression and World Wars, there was a steady decline in industrial activities which resulted in a population
drop. To counter this decline, many leisure and community axed activities were organized by and for
residents.
Today, the neighborhood has been transformed by the development of residential housing units such as lofts
and condos and the transformation of old industrial buildings into business incubators. Moreover, the
Lachine Canal was reopened in 2002 for tourism purposes and many improvements were made on public
spaces.
