What an audience Jesus has in today's Gospel! "A great crowd of his disciples and a large num- ber of people from all over Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon." Disci- ples, pagans, and devout Jews gathered together to hear Jesus speak in the Sermon on the Mount. All of these people had something in common. God was someone to be bargained with, and if God liked you, you were rewarded with good fortune. This Sunday, Jesus tells us a different story. "Woe to you who are rich ? who are filled now ? who laugh ? when all speak well of you. Blessed are you who are poor ? you who are now hungry ? when people hate you and when they exclude you and insult you." Jesus completely flips the script on what it means to be blessed by God. What he proclaims as "woe" are states of life we often strive for, and "blessed" are the states we work hard to avoid! Jesus is concerned with the kingdom of God and the world to come, not the typical structures of power and privilege. The word "now" appears often in these statements. Why? If you are well "now," that's beside the point. To be rich in this life has no direct bearing on your immortal soul. If you're struggling "now," that's not an indication that God has forgotten you or that - in light of eternity - you're worse off than someone else. In fact, it could be an indicator that you're enduring something that will bring you to a place of greater, eternal joy in the future. This Sunday, consider your priorities. Who do we reject as not blessed, and thereby inflict woe upon ourselves? When we encounter difficult situations in our own lives, do we see them as op- portunities to remember God and lean on His mercy and grace? 400 CENTER ROAD, BEDFORD, OHIO 44146-2296 Fr. SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 17, 2019

PRO-LIFE CONVENTION Please check out this weekends bulletin insert for “Bringing America Back to Life” Pro-Life Conven-tion on March 8th & 9th.

MARRIED COUPLES WEEKEND Tired of dull winter weekends? Try the Super Week-end! A Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend is a positive, simple, common sense experience for a hus-band and wife who want to put a breath of fresh air into their marriage. Personal Testimony: “Our love was made fresh.” The next area Weekend is April 26-28, 2019 at the Homewood Suites, Solon. Contact 330-305-9963 or www.GreatMarriagesOhio.org to apply.

Dear Parishioners, This coming Friday, February 22nd, we celebrate a rather unusual feast day, the Feast of the Chair of Saint Peter the Apostle. Most feasts cele-brate a saint or an event in the life of a saint. So why would we have a feast day honoring the “chair” of St. Peter? After Jesus died and ascended into Heaven, Peter evange-lized in Jerusalem, and he was imprisoned there by King Herod. After an angel helped to free him, he continued to spread the Gospel in Jerusalem, and eventually he traveled to the cities of Antioch, Cor-inth, and finally Rome. What better place to evan-gelize than in the heart of the civilized world. Peter probably lived in Rome for 25 years governing the entire church from his chair. Peter had a wooden chair that he used while presiding over Mass. “Kathedra” is a Greek word which means “chair,” and a cathedra is the chair where a bishop sits. Ca-thedra is also the root word of Cathedral which is the church building that houses the chair of a bish-op. There is a cathedra in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist where Bishop Nelson Perez sits. On-ly a bishop is allowed to sit in the cathedra, so each cathedral has another presider’s chair where the rec-tor of the cathedral would sit when he is celebrating Mass.

I had the honor of seeing in person the chair of St. Peter which is hanging behind the main altar in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The original chair used by St. Peter was encased in bronze and gold by the artist Bernini in 1647. The chair became symbolic of the power and authority entrusted to Peter by Christ. We hear Jesus say in the Gospel, “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in Heaven; and whatever you loose on Earth shall be loosed in Heaven” (Matthew 16:18-19). The keys to the Kingdom that were entrusted to Pe-ter have been handed down to successive popes throughout the centuries. And it’s the Chair of Saint Peter, which hangs in St. Peter’s Basilica, which is symbolic of the great responsibility that has been given to the Pope.

Have a blessed week! Father Joe
