*CALL TO WORSHIP

Happy are those who take delight in the law of the Lord.

They are like trees planted by streams of water. In all that

they do they prosper.

For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous.

May God number us with the righteous as we worship the Lord.

Let us worship God!

*HYMN NO. 744 Arise, Your Light Is Come! FESTAL SONG

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION Marland Pittman

Gracious God, you call us to delight in your teachings,

yet we can become cynical and full of doubt.

We continue to live in fear.

You invite us to share in Christ’s ministry, but we ignore the

calling of our baptism.

Do not judge us, we pray, but heal us and restore us to you.

Guard us and protect us from evil.

Set us free from a past we cannot change;

open to us a future in which we can be changed;

and grant us grace to grow more and more

in your likeness and image;

through Jesus Christ, the light of the world.

*SILENCE FOR PERSONAL PRAYER AND REFLECTION

*DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS

In Christ Jesus, God has promised to forgive us and reconcile us

to God and each other.

With joy, let us share in the hope that we are forgiven.

Friends, I declare that you are forgiven.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come; thy will be done, on earth as it is in

heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our

debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into

temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the

kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

O for a closer walk with God, a calm and heavenly frame;

A light to shine upon the road that leads me to the Lamb!

Return, O holy Dove, return! Sweet messenger of rest;

I hate the sins that made thee mourn, and drove thee from my

breast.

So shall my walk be close with God, calm and serene my

frame;

So purer light shall mark the road that leads me to the Lamb.

MUSIC IN WORSHIP

Today’s Psalm, Psalm 1, informs us that those who delight in the

law of the Lord are happy, righteous and prosperous. The psalm

makes a sharp contrast between the lot of the righteous and the

wicked. Of the righteous, the psalmist states, “They are like trees

planted by streams of water, bearing fruit in due season, everything

they do shall prosper.” Of the wicked, the psalmist states, “It is not

so with the wicked; they are like chaff which the wind blows away.”

The psalm is sung in the plainchant style.

Today’s 11:00 Offertory, “O for a closer walk with thee,” was

composed by the Irish composer Sir Charles Stanford (1852 –

1924). It is a setting of the hymn CAITHNESS (see Glory to

God No. 739), which first appeared in the 1635 Scottish

Psalter. Written for organ and SATB choir, the sopranos make the

opening statement and then are joined by the lower three voices.

The mood of the music reflects the tender poem by William Cowper

(1731 -1800). Charles Stanford, along with composers Elgar and

Parry, brought about the so-called “English Musical Renaissance,” a

rebirth of internationally significant compositions in Great Britain at

the beginning of the 20th century. Stanford was a highly respected

teacher; some of his pupils were the composers Ralph Vaughan

Williams, Gustav Holst, and Herbert Howells.
