Concerts are a very important part of your child’s participation in the music program. Because a concert performance can make some people nervous, there are a few things you as an audience can do to make our concerts less stressful and more enjoyable for everyone.
1. Please be seated before the starting time of the concert. 2. If you are bringing small children, please stress the
importance of being quiet while the music is being performed.
3. If you must leave for any reason, please do so between musical selections. Please re-enter between selections as well.
4. If you have a small child who will not stop crying or can’t sit still, please take him or her out of the performance room quickly and quietly.
5. Please avoid taking photos during the performance. The flash can cause a problem with reading the music or following the conductor.
6. Please do not talk during the performance. Others may want to hear the music. It may be their child’s “big part”.
7. Please do not call out your child’s name before, during or after the group’s performance.
8. Please turn off all cell phones before the performance begins.
Let’s do what we can to make all concerts a huge success!

Using only six notes, this arrangement of Shepherd's Hey retains the wonderful character of Grainger's setting while staying accessible to even the least experienced of students.
Fire Dance portrays a musical picture of dancers frolicking around a huge fire. The piece is designed to teach several techniques to young players: quick, light articulation, an awareness of some of the dissonances found in mixed minor modal harmonies, the simple syncopation pattern of four eighth notes with the last one accented, and dynamic contrasts.
The Kingdom of Castile was one of the medieval kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula which is located in the extreme southwest of Europe and includes modern-day Spain, Portugal, Andorra, Gibraltar and a small area of France. Its name comes from the large number of castles constructed in the region. It was one of the kingdoms that founded the Crown of Castile and the Kingdom of Spain. Historically, the Crown of Castile is usually considered to have begun in 1230 with the union of the monarchies of the kingdoms Castile and Toledo and the kingdoms of Leon and Galicia, and with the union of their parliaments a few decades later. The Crown of Castile is a concert march for young players in the traditional Spanish style. It employs elements of the Habañera, particularly in the bass line, along with a harmonic and melodic language chosen to evoke images of this fascinating time in Spanish history.
On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss is a beautiful arrangement of the popular hymn “It is Well With My Soul.” The composer begins the piece with a flowing woodwind line before french horns begin the main melody. The melody then passes to other instruments of the band, one phrase at a time, before its completion. A developmental section precedes a beautiful brass choir setting of the tune. The intensity grows and reaches an exhilarating climax before an emotional, yet calming completion of the piece.
Brian Balmages was inspired to write Blue Ridge Reel energetic work after visiting Asheville, North Carolina for a conference. He incorporated many bluegrass and folk elements into the piece, including the use and feature of several non-traditional percussion instruments like spoons and a washboard. The students really enjoyed working on developing their performance to incorporate more traditional aspects from sources like Irish reels, traditional Appalachian folk performances, and traditional Afro-Latin and Afro-Cuban clave rhythms.

TESCountry Wildflowers is a slower, more lyrical work based loosely on the Scottish folksong “In April, When Primroses Paint the Sweet Prairie.” Its use of entrances on pick-ups, independent parts, phrasing, key change, and dynamic contrast challenged the students and always kept them on their toes.
In the spirit of 20th century neo-classical music, Dance Ritual captivates the audience with a frenzy of rhythm and an intense melody. This piece is a great educational tool for young musicians. It begins with a fairly simple, repetitive melody that every instrument plays at one point or another. Within a certain phrase, the time signature may change as many as five times. Dance Ritual is reminiscent of Igor Stravinsky's ballet "Firebird”, which was later animated in Disney's "Fantasia 2000". We hope you enjoy Douglas Akey's Dance Ritual!
Part I of Armenian Dances is the first of a four-movement suite drawn from the folk song arrangements and original musical works of Komitas Vardapet (1869-1935), a treasured Armenian composer, arranger, educator and ethnomusicologist, who devoted his life’s work to building the foundations of that country’s rich and diverse classical music. Alfred Reed (1921-2005) chose five tunes from the creative output of Komitas for inclusion in his colorful, rhapsodic offering. Four of those themes are featured (in order of appearance) in this edition for younger players:I. Tzirani Tzar (“The Apricot Tree”)II. Kagavi Erg (“The Partridge’s Song”)III. Alagyaz (named for the mountain in Northwestern Armenia)IV. Gna Gna (“Go, Go”)
Franz Schubert lived a short life. He was born in 1797 and died in 1828. He wrote his Fifth Symphony at age 19, and like so much of his brief output, it is still performed and loved by orchestras to this day. This transcription is an excerpt from the second movement of that Fifth Symphony. Typically, each movement of a symphony was named by its tempo marking. ‘Andante Con Moto’ translates simply to “at a medium tempo with motion”. In its day, Schubert’s Fifth was referred to as the ‘Symphony without Trumpets and Drums’ - a title that this arrangement finally put to rest.
The Washington Post March is a patriotic march composed by John Philip Sousa. In 1889, owners of the Washington Post newspaper requested the then-current leader of the Marine Band to compose a march for the newspaper’s essay contest awards ceremony. Sousa obliged and it was first performed on June 15, 1889 at the ceremony and became an instant hit. The Washington Post March is written in 6/8 meter and utilizes a typical march form with a “dog fight” between the restatements of the trio melody.

S“It is our job, as parents, educators, and friends, to see that our young people have the opportunity to attain the thorough education that will prepare them for the future. Much of that education takes place in the
classroom. We must encourage our youngsters in such pursuits as music education. In addition to learning the valuable lesson that it
takes hard work to achieve success, no matter what the arena, music education can provide students with a strong sense of determination,
improved communication skills, and a host of other qualities essential for successful living.”
