Geologic mapp ing on the Chor t s b lock has def ined two m ajor Mesozoic uni ts
which are o lder than the wel l-know n, lower Cretaceous Yo joa Group. The two
units have been considered part of the same strat igraphic element, the Honduras
Group. The Agua Fr a Format ion, a dominant ly c last ic m ixed cont inenta l-mar ine
unit, has been dated as Middle Jurassic based on recent discover ies of ammonites
and plant foss i ls. Dates as old as Rh aetian for similar rock s have been reported in
the l i terature, but have not been conf irmed. No unfaulted contact between theAgua Fr a Formation and the Yojoa Group has been found. The Yojoa Group is
comm only under la in by a conglom erat ic uni t , the unnamed s i l i c ic last ic member
of the Honduras Group, that is l i thological ly dist i nct f rom the A gua Fra
Formation. Avai lable palynological data indicate that the unnamed si l iciclast ic
member is restr icted to the lower Cretaceous. The H onduras Group as currently
def ined is an inappropriate strat igraphic term. The two un its of the group are not
contiguous and have signif icant dif ferences in l i thology, and, especial ly , in age.
Inas-much as i ts usage is c aus ing st rat igraphic confus ion, I r ecommend
abandoning the term Honduras Group. The Agua Fr a Formation is left as an
independent strat igraphic element. The unnamed si l iciclast ic member is herein
named the Tepemechn Formation after a r iver south of Lake Yojoa.
Al though th icknesses as great as 1200m have been repor ted for the Agua Fr a
Formation, i t is l imited to rather narrow bas ins probably of str ike- sl ip or igin. Bycontr ast, the Tep em echn Formation is w idespread yet thinner and was deposited
immediately pr ior to the deposit ion of the Yojoa Group l imestones.
Sedimentological ly , the formation is similar to known r if t deposits. Rif t ing
probably occurred in the ear l iest Cretaceous and was fol lowed by subsidence
represented by the l imestone. Thus, the Chorts block exper ienced str ike-sl ip
fault ing in the Middle Jurassic fol lowed by r if t ing throughout the block in the
Ear ly Cretaceous wh ereas neighboring regions ex per ienced pure r i ft ing from the
Midd le Jurass ic to the Cretaceous as ev idenced by th ick depos i ts o f cont inenta l
redbeds.
