The War Propaganda Bureau also commissioned
films, which were shown all over the country. If

To the north of Ypres our progress has been continued,
especially on our left. We have taken six quick-firers, two
bomb-throwers, and much material; and made several
hundred prisoners, including several officers.
The losses of the enemy were extremely high. At a single
point on the front, in the proximity of the canal we
counted more than six hundred German dead.On the heights of the Meuse, on the front Les Eparges-St
Remy-Calonne trench, we have continued to gain
ground, about one kilometre, and have inflicted on the
enemy very severe losses.

The glamour of a uniform and the chance for
adventure attracted a good number of young
men especially since everybody expected the
war to be over by Christmas 1914. In the
meantime, men who volunteered together were
promised that they could fight together in what
became known as Pals battalions.
Source E Extract from a government report
on censorship, October 1915
There is no compulsory submission bynewspapers of any class of matter for
censorship. A newspaper commits no
offence if it never submits anything to
the censors at all. The offence consists
in publishing something which can be
proved in a criminal trial to offend
against DORA.

volunteered for the armed forces
was government propaganda
