One of the pastoral initiatives desired by the parish in its pastoral strategy is to implement the Alpha course. THE HIBERNIAN SOCIETY HAD THEIR A.G.M. RECENTLY AND CELEBRATED MASS AT OUR LADY OF LOURDES,

SO WHO ARE THE HIBERNIAN SOCIETY?

THE HIBERNIAN SOCIETY.

On the 16th of December 1869 a group of Irishmen met in the Brian Boru hotel in Greymouth.

The meeting was the first of its kind in New Zealand and the 30 or so men present were inducted

into the Ballarat Hibernian Society by its Secretary Francis H. Byrne. He had been invited to come

to the Coast to spread the message of Hibernianism.

The Irish in Australia at that time had been subjected to discrimination regarding employment and

other issues and the New Zealand Irish population was taking steps in an attempt to ensure that

the same wasn’t happening in New Zealand.

Within a very short time, 17 towns in New Zealand had Hibernian members as the Friendly Society movement (not only Hibernian) was

spreading rapidly throughout the country. The newly established Hibernians were very quick to dissociate themselves from the Irish

politics at the time. By 1871 the Ballarat Hibernian Society had amalgamated with the Australian Catholic Benefit Society and became

known as The Australasian Catholic Benefit Society. On 20th September 1882 when delegates assembled for their first half yearly

meeting, the Society became known as the New Zealand Catholic Benefit Society.

A Friendly Society is formed to provide for, by voluntary subscriptions of members or the aid of donations, the relief or maintenance of

members and their families during sickness old age etc. The Hibernian Society (named after the ancient name for Ireland) is a Catholic

benefit society which has existed in New Zealand since 1869. It raises, administers and distributes funds to support Catholic families

suffering economic and social hardship, and provides support and companionship.

Next week: The Hibernian Society in Hastings.
