Be a Responsible OwnerAs the vehicle’s owner, you are respon-sible for the safe and proper operationof your scooter.Scooters are single-track vehicles.Their safe use and operation are depen-dent upon the use of proper riding tech-niques as well as the expertise of theoperator. Every operator should know thefollowing requirements before riding thisscooter.

He or she should:● Obtain thorough instructions from

a competent source on all aspectsof scooter operation.

● Observe the warnings and mainte-nance requirements in this Owner’sManual.

● Obtain qualified training in safe andproper riding techniques.

● Obtain professional technical ser-vice as indicated in this Owner’sManual and/or when made neces-sary by mechanical conditions.

Safe RidingPerform the pre-operation checks eachtime you use the vehicle to make sureit is in safe operating condition. Failureto inspect or maintain the vehicle prop-erly increases the possibility of an acci-dent or equipment damage. See page4-2 for a list of pre-operation checks.

● This scooter is designed to carrythe operator and a passenger.

● The failure of motorists to detectand recognize scooters in traffic isthe predominating cause of auto-mobile/scooter accidents. Manyaccidents have been caused by anautomobile driver who did not seethe scooter. Making yourself con-spicuous appears to be very effec-tive in reducing the chance of thistype of accident.

Therefore:• Wear a brightly colored jacket.• Use extra caution when you are

approaching and passingthrough intersections, since

intersections are the mostlikely places for scooteraccidents to occur.

• Ride where other motorists cansee you. Avoid riding in anothermotorist’s blind spot.

● Many accidents involve inexperi-enced operators. In fact, many op-erators who have been involved inaccidents do not even have a cur-rent driver’s license.• Make sure that you are quali-

fied and that you only lend yourscooter to other qualifiedoperators.

• Know your skills and limits.Staying within your limits mayhelp you to avoid an accident.

• We recommend that youpractice riding your scooterwhere there is no traffic untilyou have become thoroughlyfamiliar with the scooter and allof its controls.

● Many accidents have been causedby error of the scooter operator. A

typical error made by the operatoris veering wide on a turn due toexcessive speed or undercornering(insufficient lean angle for thespeed).• Always obey the speed limit

and never travel faster thanwarranted by road and trafficconditions.

• Always signal before turning orchanging lanes. Make sure thatother motorists can see you.

● The posture of the operator andpassenger is important for propercontrol.• The operator should keep both

hands on the handlebar andboth feet on the operatorfootrests during operation tomaintain control of the scooter.

• The passenger should alwayshold onto the operator, the seatstrap or grab bar, if equipped, with both hands and keep bothfeet on the passenger footrests.Never carry a passenger unless

he or she can firmly place bothfeet on the passenger foot-rests.

● Never ride under the influence ofalcohol or other drugs.

● This scooter is designed for on-roaduse only. It is not suitable for off-road use.

Protective apparelThe majority of fatalities from scooteraccidents are the result of head injuries. The use of a safety helmet is the singlemost critical factor in the prevention orreduction of head injuries.

● Always wear an approved helmet.● Wear a face shield or goggles. Wind

in your unprotected eyes could con-tribute to an impairment of visionthat could delay seeing a hazard.

● The use of a jacket, substantialshoes, trousers, gloves, etc., iseffective in preventing or reducingabrasions or lacerations.

● Never wear loose-fitting clothes, otherwise they could catch on the

control levers or wheels and causeinjury or an accident.

● Always wear protective clothingthat covers your legs, ankles, andfeet. The engine or exhaust systembecome very hot during or afteroperation and can cause burns.

● A passenger should also observethe above precautions.

Avoid Carbon Monoxide PoisoningAll engine exhaust contains carbonmonoxide, a deadly gas. Breathing car-bon monoxide can cause headaches, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, confu-sion, and eventually death.Carbon Monoxide is a colorless, odor-less, tasteless gas which may bepresent even if you do not see or smellany engine exhaust. Deadly levels ofcarbon monoxide can collect rapidly andyou can quickly be overcome and un-able to save yourself. Also, deadly lev-els of carbon monoxide can linger forhours or days in enclosed or poorly ven-tilated areas. If you experience any

symptoms of carbon monoxide poison-ing, leave the area immediately, getfresh air, and SEEK MEDICAL TREAT-MENT.

● Do not run engine indoors. Even ifyou try to ventilate engine exhaustwith fans or open windows anddoors, carbon monoxide can rap-idly reach dangerous levels.

● Do not run engine in poorly venti-lated or partially enclosed areassuch as barns, garages, or car-ports.

● Do not run engine outdoors whereengine exhaust can be drawn intoa building through openings suchas windows and doors.

LoadingAdding accessories or cargo to yourscooter can adversely affect stabilityand handling if the weight distribution ofthe scooter is changed. To avoid thepossibility of an accident, use extremecaution when adding cargo or accesso-ries to your scooter. Use extra care when

riding a scooter that has added cargo oraccessories. Here, along with the infor-mation about accessories below, aresome general guidelines to follow if load-ing cargo to your scooter:

The total weight of the operator, pas-senger, accessories and cargo mustnot exceed the maximum load limit.Operation of an overloaded vehiclecould cause an accident.

Maximum load:177 kg (390 lb)

When loading within this weight limit, keep the following in mind:

● Cargo and accessory weight shouldbe kept as low and close to thescooter as possible. Securely packyour heaviest items as close to thecenter of the vehicle as possibleand make sure to distribute theweight as evenly as possible onboth sides of the scooter to mini-mize imbalance or instability.

● Shifting weights can create a sud-den imbalance. Make sure that ac-cessories and cargo are securelyattached to the scooter before riding.Check accessory mounts andcargo restraints frequently.• Properly adjust the suspension

for your load (suspension-adjustable models only), andcheck the condition andpressure of your tires.

• Never attach any large orheavy items to the handlebar, front fork, or front fender. Suchitems can create unstablehandling or a slow steeringresponse.

This vehicle is not designed topull a trailer or to be attached toa sidecar.

Yamaha is not in aposition to test the products that theseaftermarket companies produce. There-fore, Yamaha can neither endorse norrecommend the use of accessories notsold by Yamaha or modifications notspecifically recommended by Yamaha, even if sold and installed by a Yamahadealer.

Aftermarket Parts, Accessories, andModificationsWhile you may find aftermarket productssimilar in design and quality to genuineYamaha accessories, recognize thatsome aftermarket accessories or modi-fications are not suitable because ofpotential safety hazards to you or oth-ers. Installing aftermarket products orhaving other modifications performed to

your vehicle that change any of thevehicle’s design or operation character-istics can put you and others at greaterrisk of serious injury or death. You areresponsible for injuries related tochanges in the vehicle.Keep the following guidelines in mind,as well as those provided under “Load-ing” when mounting accessories.

● Never install accessories or carrycargo that would impair the perfor-mance of your scooter. Carefullyinspect the accessory before us-ing it to make sure that it does notin any way reduce ground clear-ance or cornering clearance, limitsuspension travel, steering travelor control operation, or obscurelights or reflectors.• Accessories fitted to the

handlebar or the front fork areacan create instability due toimproper weight distribution oraerodynamic changes. Ifaccessories are added to thehandlebar or front fork area,

they must be as lightweight aspossible and should be kept toa minimum.

• Bulky or large accessories mayseriously affect the stability ofthe scooter due to aerodynamiceffects. Wind may attempt tolift the scooter, or the scootermay become unstable in crosswinds. These accessories mayalso cause instability whenpassing or being passed bylarge vehicles.

• Certain accessories candisplace the operator from hisor her normal riding position. This improper position limitsthe freedom of movement ofthe operator and may limitcontrol ability, therefore, suchaccessories are not recom-mended.

● Use caution when adding electricalaccessories. If electrical accesso-ries exceed the capacity of thescooter’s electrical system, an elec-

Further safe-riding points● Make sure to signal clearly when

making turns.● Braking can be extremely difficult

on a wet road. Avoid hard braking, because the scooter could slide.Apply the brakes slowly when stop-ping on a wet surface.

● Slow down as you approach a cor-ner or turn. Once you have com-pleted a turn, accelerate slowly.

● Be careful when passing parkedcars. A driver might not see you andopen a door in your path.

● Railroad crossings, streetcar rails, iron plates on road constructionsites, and manhole covers becomeextremely slippery when wet. Slowdown and cross them with caution.Keep the scooter upright, otherwiseit could slide out from under you.

● The brake lining could get wet whenyou wash the scooter. After wash-ing the scooter, check the brakesbefore riding.

● Always wear a helmet, gloves, trou-sers (tapered around the cuff andankle so they do not flap), and abright colored jacket.

● Do not carry too much luggage onthe scooter. An overloaded scooteris unstable.

Engine break-inThere is never a more important periodin the life of your engine than the periodbetween 0 and 1000 km (600 mi). Forthis reason, you should read the follow-ing material carefully.

Since the engine is brand new, do notput an excessive load on it for the first1000 km (600 mi). The various parts inthe engine wear and polish themselvesto the correct operating clearances. Dur-ing this period, prolonged full-throttleoperation or any condition that mightresult in engine overheating must beavoided.

Fuel consumption, tips for reducing<IXE>

Engine break-in<IXE>

EAU16820

Tips for reducing fuel con-sumptionFuel consumption depends largely onyour riding style. Consider the followingtips to reduce fuel consumption:

● Avoid high engine speeds duringacceleration.

● Avoid high engine speeds with noload on the engine.

● Turn the engine off instead of let-ting it idle for an extended lengthof time (e.g., in traffic jams, at traf-fic lights or at railroad crossings).

EAU16951

0 ~ 150 km (0 ~ 90 mi)Avoid prolonged operation above 1/3throttle.After every hour of operation, stop theengine, and then let it cool for five toten minutes.

Vary the engine speed from time to time.Do not operate the engine at one setthrottle position.

150 ~ 500 km (90 ~ 300 mi)Avoid prolonged operation above 1/2throttle.Rev the engine freely through the gears, but do not use full throttle at any time.

500 ~ 1000 km (300 ~ 600 mi)Avoid prolonged operation above 3/4throttle. NOTICE: After 1000 km (600mi) of operation, the engine oil mustbe changed and the oil strainercleaned.[ECA10351]

WARNING

When checking the fuel system, donot smoke, and make sure there areno open flames or sparks in the area, including pilot lights from water heat-ers or furnaces. Gasoline or gasolinevapors can ignite or explode, caus-ing severe injury or property damage.

EAU25881

TroubleshootingAlthough Yamaha scooters receive athorough inspection before shipmentfrom the factory, trouble may occur dur-ing operation. Any problem in the fuel, compression, or ignition systems, forexample, can cause poor starting andloss of power.

The following troubleshooting charts rep-resent quick and easy procedures forchecking these vital systems yourself. However, should your scooter require anyrepair, take it to a Yamaha dealer, whoseskilled technicians have the necessarytools, experience, and know-how to ser-vice the scooter properly.

Use only genuine Yamaha replacementparts. Imitation parts may look likeYamaha parts, but they are often infe-rior, have a shorter service life and canlead to expensive repair bills.

Care<IXE>

EAU26093

CareWhile the open design of a scooter re-veals the attractiveness of the technol-ogy, it also makes it more vulnerable.Rust and corrosion can develop even ifhigh-quality components are used. Arusty exhaust pipe may go unnoticed ona car, however, it detracts from the over-all appearance of a scooter. Frequent andproper care does not only comply withthe terms of the warranty, but it will alsokeep your scooter looking good, extendits life and optimize its performance.

Before cleaning1. Cover the muffler outlet with a plas-

tic bag after the engine has cooleddown.

2. Make sure that all caps and cov-ers as well as all electrical couplersand connectors, including the sparkplug cap, are tightly installed.

3. Remove extremely stubborn dirt, like oil burnt onto the crankcase, with a degreasing agent and abrush, but never apply such prod-

ucts onto seals, gaskets and wheelaxles. Always rinse the dirt anddegreaser off with water.

CleaningECA10782

NOTICE

●●●●● Avoid using strong acidic wheelcleaners, especially on spokedwheels. If such products are usedon hard-to-remove dirt, do notleave the cleaner on the affectedarea any longer than instructed. Also, thoroughly rinse the areaoff with water, immediately dry it,and then apply a corrosion pro-tection spray.

●●●●● Improper cleaning can damageplastic parts (such as cowlings, panels, windshields, headlightlenses, meter lenses, etc.) andthe mufflers. Use only a soft, clean cloth or sponge with waterto clean plastic. However, if theplastic parts cannot be thor-oughly cleaned with water, di-

luted mild detergent with watermay be used. Be sure to rinse offany detergent residue usingplenty of water, as it is harmfulto plastic parts.

●●●●● Do not use any harsh chemicalproducts on plastic parts. Be sureto avoid using cloths or spongeswhich have been in contact withstrong or abrasive cleaning prod-ucts, solvent or thinner, fuel(gasoline), rust removers or in-hibitors, brake fluid, antifreeze orelectrolyte.

●●●●● Do not use high-pressure wash-ers or steam-jet cleaners sincethey cause water seepage anddeterioration in the following ar-eas: seals (of wheel andswingarm bearings, fork andbrakes), electric components(couplers, connectors, instru-ments, switches and lights),breather hoses and vents.

●●●●● For scooters equipped with awindshield: Do not use strong

cleaners or hard sponges as theywill cause dulling or scratching. Some cleaning compounds forplastic may leave scratches onthe windshield. Test the producton a small hidden part of thewindshield to make sure that itdoes not leave any marks. If thewindshield is scratched, use aquality plastic polishing com-pound after washing.

After normal useRemove dirt with warm water, a milddetergent, and a soft, clean sponge, andthen rinse thoroughly with clean water.Use a toothbrush or bottlebrush for hard-to-reach areas. Stubborn dirt and insectswill come off more easily if the area iscovered with a wet cloth for a few min-utes before cleaning.

After riding in the rain, near the sea oron salt-sprayed roadsSince sea salt or salt sprayed on theroads during winter are extremely corro-

sive in combination with water, carry outthe following steps after each ride in therain, near the sea or on salt-sprayedroads.

TIPSalt sprayed on roads in the winter mayremain well into spring.

1. Clean the scooter with cold waterand a mild detergent after the en-gine has cooled down. NOTICE: Donot use warm water since it in-creases the corrosive action ofthe salt.[ECA10791]

2. Apply a corrosion protection sprayon all metal, including chrome- andnickel-plated, surfaces to preventcorrosion.

After cleaning1. Dry the scooter with a chamois or

an absorbing cloth.2. Use a chrome polish to shine

chrome, aluminum and stainless-steel parts, including the exhaust
