Adult Confirmation Tuesdays 7:15-9pm at 2278 Booksin in the Marian Room with Deacon Bruce

Note from the Pastor

A big Thank You to the 514 families who have al-ready replied to the 2016 ADA. We currently have $177,276 pledged which puts us at 79% of the way to this year’s goal of $222,529. We are doing great, however, we need everyone’s participation in order to be successful. If you have not had a chance to re-turn your pledge form please do it soon (including gifts of prayer) so we can avoid having to do a sec-ond mailing. And remember, all funds over the $222,529 goal will be rebated back to the parish. Please make your pledge today. Packets were sent to all of our parishioners in Janu-ary. Extra sets are available in the back of the church or contact the parish office to have another sent to you. God Bless.

Dear Parishioners, Faces are a very interesting study while faces cannot tell us everything about other people, they can tell us quite a bit. The truth of this is borne out by the many times we use the word 'face' in talking about others. We say: 'You should have seen his/her face when I said this!' In other words, on the face we can read how they feel inside, how they really are, what moves them, etc. We sometimes say that a person is 'two-faced'. This is a very serious charge to level against anyone. It implies that we think they are dishonest, they are not genuine but false. We say that at last a person 'showed his/her true face.' Here we imply that up to this they may have been dilly-dallying, or even two-faced, but now at last they are forced to put their cards on the table The truth is that we do not have one face, but many faces. And this is natural. It is part of being human, part of life. At different times we wear the face of: happiness or sadness, , peace or unrest, courage or weariness or relaxation, fear hope or despair, joy or pain, friendship or hostility ... There is nothing then to be ashamed of in all this. The only thing we should be ashamed of is a false face. These other faces are all mine. I am behind each of them. They are real It is easy to make the mistake of thinking that what the apostles saw on Tabor was 'the real Christ'. What they saw was real. It did reveal to them something of the inner person that at other times was hidden from them. But to say that it was the real Christ implies that all the other faces he wore were not real, and if they were not real then they were false. Christ had all the faces that we have, except the false ones. His face often betrayed weariness: think of the time he fell asleep in the boat. His face showed disappointment: when the Nazarenes rejected him. It showed anger: when he cleansed the temple. It showed gentleness: with the children. It showed compassion: when he saw that the people were like sheep without a shep-herd. It showed sadness: when he cried on the way to the grave of his friend Lazarus. It showed fear and anguish: in the garden. It showed pain: on the cross. And it was pale and frozen: when he was dead. These are some of the many faces Christ wore, and they were all real. As he prayed the aspect of his face changed. Does prayer change us? Listen to him. How, where, when can we listen to him? What impedes our listening?. Where do you see the face of Christ?

The apostles' witnessing of the Transfiguration of Jesus not only revealed His divinity to them, but also coupled Moses and Elijah with His/their Jewish heritage and the reason for Jesus' exist-ence. Then, the words - "This is my chosen Son; listen to him", provides us with the Gospel message of Jesus being the bridge for our Christian journey. Lent may well be a time for reflection/discernment as to how we might personally/collectively "listen to him" in the 21st Century. The message of Matthew 25:40: "whenever you did this for one of the least important of these brothers of mine, you did it for me", has be-come, today, a repetitive focus of Pope Francis. In " the Joy of the Gospel" (188) : "- - working to eliminate the structural causes of poverty and to promote the integral development of the poor, as well as small daily acts of solidarity in meeting the real needs which we encounter. - solidarity - presumes the creation of a new mindset which thinks in terms of community and the priority of the life of all over the appro-priation of goods by a few." In addressing real life needs (192) : "This means education, ac-cess to health care, and above all employment, for it is through free, creative, participatory and mutually supportive labor that human beings express and enhance the dignity of their lives." As Christians, we are indeed called upon not only to "listen to him", but also to put those words into action; James 2:20, "Faith that does not result in good deeds is not real faith." Christian Meditation As taught by Father John Main O.S.B.

Three Tuesdays of Lent at 7pm

During the Season of Lent you are warmly invited to participate in the ancient tradition and practice of silent Christian meditation which brings us to that place of inner silence where “we are simply being with God who is in us in the Holy Spirit whom Jesus has given us” (John Main). We will be meeting in Church at 7pm on, February 23 and March 8. Christian meditation is a prayer of faith, “It is more important to experience its power in our lives than to try to understand or explain it” (John Main), so let us deepen our spiritual life by joining together to medi-tate. Let us make these three special evenings a beautiful part of our 2016, Year of Mercy, Lenten journey. The format for our meetings is very simple and will consist of gathering together, followed by a prayer and a reading. We will listen to a recording of John Main for about 10 minutes then a couple of minutes of gentle music, before meditating together for 20 minutes. We will conclude with some more gentle music and candlelight prayers. This invitation is ex-tended with much love to all who have come to pre-vious meditations during Advent, Lent, Pentecost and All Saints/All Souls and also to anyone who has never meditated before. All are welcome – no experience required.
