PAGE TWO SAINT CYRIL OF JERUSALEM DECEMBER 15TH 2019
From The Desk of Father MacFrom The Desk of Father Mac This Third Sunday of Advent is known as “Gaudete Sunday” or “Rejoice Sunday.” Its name is taken from the entrance antiphon of the Mass, which is: Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice. Indeed, the Lord is near. This is a quotation from Philippians 4:4-5 and in Latin the first word of the antiphon is gaudete (Latin, “rejoice”; it's also pronounced with three syllables: gau-day-tay).
Advent is the season of preparing for the arrival of the Lord Jesus (both his first coming and his second coming), and by the third Sunday of Advent, we are most of the way through the season. Thus it is appropriate to rejoice as we see the goal of the season approaching: “The Lord is near.” On this day, the rose-colored candle of the Advent Wreath is lit and the priest may wear rose vestments, which tells us there is something different today.
This difference is also expressed in today’s readings. In-stead of waiting in hopeful anticipation, now we are called to rejoice because the Messiah is in our midst and we recog-nize him through the attributes the Scripture provides for us today. It is as if we have just received the job descrip-tion written by God.
In the first reading, Isaiah prophesies that the Messiah will be the one who will bring hope of healing to the blind, deaf and lame. The psalm even gives praise for God’s faithful-ness, and adds to Isaiah’s list the hungry, the oppressed, and orphans and widows. When Jesus tells John the Bap-tist’s disciples, go and tell John what you hear and see, he is confirming these attributes, while revealing that his com-ing is more than an historical event. The Messiah is in our midst.
John must have been filled with joy when his disciples con-firmed that Jesus is the one who is to come. We are filled with joy when we see and hear the healing and transforma-tive works of God taking place all around us. The Messiah is with us. This joy is intended to be shared. John the Baptist was the messenger sent to prepare the way for Jesus, which he did with joy. Jesus is the message. In him we learn the Messiah is the one who brings good news to the poor and healing to all those in need. We re-joice in this knowledge. We are faithful to Christ, and truly his disciples, whenever we allow God to work through us and make visible the Messiah in our works of charity. Em-manuel – God is with us.

ST CYRIL OF JERUSALEM PARISH STEWARDSHIP

“You too must be patient. Make you hearts firm, because the coming of the Lord is at hand.” JAMES 5:8 Patience is another one of those things many of us struggle with. We want things to go according to our plan and our schedule. Any change brings anxiety and fear. Through Stew-ardship prayer, we better align ourselves with God’s will and His plan, which is far better than anything we can come up with on our own.

SAFEGUARDING THE CHILDREN BASIC GUIDELINES FOR AIRPORT SAFETY
Flying for the holidays is stressful, and it’s even more so when you add children to the equation. Airports are large, unfamiliar places flooded with crowds, and parents need to take extra precautions to make sure everyone arrives safe-
ly at their destination. Consider taking a family airport selfie so you have a current picture of what everyone is wearing in case you get separated. Talk to your children about “safe strangers” — TSA agents, flight attendants, trusted adults — they can ask for help. Go over the travel plans so that your children know where you’re going, what airline you’re flying, and where you should meet. For more information, please visit, https://www.mamamia.com.au/travelling-with-kids-airport-safety/.
