22ND SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 29TH 2021

From the Desk of Father MacFrom the Desk of Father Mac This Wednesday is the 6th annual “World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation.” Pope Francis reminds Catholics of our “vocation to be protectors of God’s handiwork,” a call-ing and responsibility which is “essential to a life of virtue; it is not an optional or a secondary aspect of our Christian experience” (Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’ 217). As we know, California and much of the southwest are ex-periencing severe drought. In the face of this, we are called to conserve the precious resource of water. This is not merely a matter of enlightened self-interest (it certain-ly is that) but is a part of Christian spirituality since God has entrusted us with stewardship of creation. St. John Paul II spoke of this call to responsible steward-ship, calling for a “global ecological conver-sion” (Catechesis, January 17, 2001). Pope Benedict em-phasized that the “Church has a responsibility towards crea-tion” in light of which we are called to defend “earth, wa-ter and air as gifts of creation that belong to everyone” and to “protect mankind from self-destruction” (Encyclical, Caritas in veritate, #51, June 29, 2009). In Laudato Sí, (On Care for Our Common Home), Pope Fran-cis returned to this theme, and reminds us that “water is a scarce and indispensable resource.” He called for “a spirit-uality [that] can motivate us to a more passionate concern for the protection of our world” (Laudato Sí, 185 and 216). Inspired by our faith, we seek responsible, intelligent, and practical stewardship of our water resources for the sake of all living things. It’s easy to take the precious resource of water for granted and waste it. Here are some suggestions for practical ways we can do our part to conserve God’s gift of water: • Run a full dishwasher instead of handwashing. If you

ditch handwashing and run full loads of dishes instead, you can save 7,000 gallons of water annually.

• Soak rather than rinse your pots and pans. For items too big or dirty to make it into the dishwasher, skip the rinse and soak them to remove food buildup and stains. Rinsing your pots and pans requires running water, which can waste 147 gallons of water per week.

• Take quick showers rather than baths. A full bath uses up to 70 gallons of water; short showers can cut up to 45 gallons of that waste.

• Turn off the faucet as you brush. Turning the faucet off during your teeth cleaning can save 10 gallons of water per day. Use a cup to rinse your mouth out once you’ve finished brushing to save even more water.

• Run full loads of laundry. Running full loads instead of half loads can save 3,400 gallons of water annually, according to the EPA.

Our Blessed Mother said to Sister Lucia of Fatima: “I promise to assist at the hour of death, with the graces necessary for salvation, all those who, on the first Saturday of five consecutive months, shall confess; receive Holy Com-munion; recite five decades of the Rosary; and keep me company for fifteen minutes while meditating on the mys-teries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to me.” The aim of the devotion is to unite humankind to God-through Mary's heart. The object of the devotion being to love God and Jesus better by uniting one's self to Mary for this purpose and by imitating her virtues.

SAFEGUARDING THE CHILDREN DID YOU KNOW?

TEACH CHILDREN TO ANSWER THE DOOR SAFELY

You would never knowingly let someone dangerous or unsafe into your home. But it is impossible to fully vet every stranger — maintenance worker, new neighbor, sales-

person, etc — who shows up at your door. Teach chil-dren a few tips about answering (or not answering) the doorbell. Consider these rules, or something simi-lar, for your family: Always look to see who is at the door first. If the person is a stranger, get an adult to answer the door. Do not open the door to someone you do not know. For more information, request a copy of the VIRTUS article “Beware of inviting other people – and vulnerability – into your house,” at lacatholics.org/did-you-know.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS welcomes any adult who is interested in the Catholic faith and those Catholic adults who need to complete their Sacraments. Classes meet twice monthly, on Thursdays from 7-8:30pm. Please call the Religious Education Office to be included in the contact list.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION classes will begin this Fall for students who do not attend a Catholic school. We will be meeting on Tuesdays from 3:30– 4:45pm. Please call the Office of Reli-

gious Education for details 818-789-5947.
