The History of Western States Machine Company

ThroughtheinventivenessandentrepreneurialspiritofEugeneRoberts,TheWesternStatesMachineCompany(WesternStates)wasfoundedinSaltLakeCity,Utah,andincorporatedApril11,1917.

WesternStatescustomerbaseexpandedtoCanada,Peru,England,Hawaii,Mexico, Puerto Rico, Santo Domingo, Scotland, Korea and Japan. TheremarkablegrowthofWesternStateswasinlargepartduetoEugeneRoberts’early experience in the sugarmill. At age16,Roberts was amechanic’shelperat theLehiSugarFactoryofUtah -onlyoneof three independentsugarbeetfactoriesintheUnitedStatesatthattime.Hisdetailed,hands-onknowledgeandexpertisepertaining toproductionand technical issuesofproducingsugarwerepricelessincontributingtothecompany’sinfluence.

WesternStatesbuiltitssuccessonthreeprinciples:qualityproducts,superiorserviceandbuildingrelationships.WesternStatesgrewinthe20’sand30’s,butcentrifugalmanufacturinghadtobescaledbackwiththeonsetofWorldWarII.WesternStateswasawardedseveralcontractswiththeUSWarDepartmenttobuildavarietyofwar-drivensupplies.Oneofthesecontracts,awardedin1942,includedthedevelopmentofacentrifugalwhichcontributed to themanufactureofwarchemicals–WesternStatesfirst forayoutside thesugar industry.Asthewarendedin1945,WesternStatesrealizedaboontobusinessprimarilyduetoordersforsparepartsandreplacements.Duringthesubsequentthreeyears,WesternStatesmanufacturedandshipped571centrifugals.

OnSeptember14,1950,EugeneRobertsdied–endinga56yearlegacywithinthesugarindustry.Roberts’visioncontinuedtothriveandgrowthroughhissuccessors.Inthe1970’saseriesofContinuousProcessCentrifugeswereinvented.Throughcontinuedinnovationthesedesignsarestillbeingmanufacturedtoday.

In1985,WesternStatesmanufacturedthefirstUSDAapprovedcentrifugal,utilizedtoprocessdairyproducts–primarilyduetoitsinnovativedesigns,materials,andCIP(Clean-In-Place)System.Throughoutthe80’sand90’sWesternStatescontinuedtoincreasesaleswithinthefoodandchemicalindustry–manyofwhichweredevelopedtoprocesscrystallinematerials.Additionally,thecompanycontinuedtoleveragetechnologiessuchascomputeraideddesign (CAD),personal computers,and integratedcomputersystems to increase internalefficiencyandproductivity.

In 2016, Western States solidified a partnership with BIG Tecnologia and Colmena, leading manufacturerssupportingtheBraziliansugarindustry.BIGTecnologiaandColmena,bothBraziliancompaniesfoundedin2003,arelocatedinPiracicaba,Brazil,providingserviceandsupporttothesugarandethanolindustries.

Withmorethan6,000centrifuges,installedacrosstwo-thirdsoftheglobe,locatedin35pluscountries,WesternStatesisatruepioneeranddrivingforceinthedesignandmanufactureofcentrifugalsfortheSugar,ChemicalandPharmaceuticalIndustries.Noothermanufacturerintheindustrycanclaimthesamedepthandlevelofexpertise.Throughstate-of-the-arttechnology,engineeringandcontinuousinnovation,wefocusonservingourcustomers’needs.

AstechnologyadvancesandnewinnovationsareincorporatedintotheTITAN®centrifugals,WesternStateshascreatedalineofmodernizationsthatwillallowtheolderWesternStatescentrifugalstotakeadvantageofthenewtechnology.Upgradingexistingcentrifugalswillincreaseperformance,decreasesparepartrequirements,reducemaintenance,andgreatlyextendtheirlife.

AfullmodernizationconsistsofaVFDUpgrade,LoadControlUpgrade,RinglessBasketConversion,andinstallationofaUniversalDischarger.Althoughwerecommendallconversionstogetoldercentrifugalsoperatingatpeakperformance,eachmodernizationcanusuallybepurchasedseparatelyaswell.

Designedspecificallyfor48”x30”,48”x36”and54”x40”batchcentrifugals,the VFD Upgrade eliminates the 2-speed motor, across-the-line contactors and high-maintenance TurnTork reversing drive. TheseVFD’sutilizeadvanced Direct Torque Control (DTC) whichmakes40,000speedcontrolcorrectionspersecond.Thesedrivesuselow-speedtorquecontrol,generatesignificantlylowernoisethanotherVFDsanddonotrequireanencodertocontrolmotorspeed,whicheliminatestheproblematicsignalcablebetweeneachmotorandVFD.

Preventivemaintenancecansavethousandsofdollarsincostlyparts,downtimeandunnecessarymaintenance.
