Upgraded Rafale set for trials 2017 - 06 - 13 -

The French Air Force is on track to carry out qualification
trials of the new „F3R‟ standard Dassault Rafale next year, which
will include testing of a new AESA radar software configuration.
The new standard, which will be an upgrade from the existing F3,
will include enhancements to the RBE2 AESA radar manufactured by
Thales and integration of the MBDA-developed Meteor air-to-air
missile. The RBE2 has undergone software changes as part of the
upgrade to F3R, rather than hardware alterations. During a recent
press visit to Thales‟ radar facility in Rouen, France, officials
confirmed that the software configuration
for the F3R was now complete and would undergo testing next
year as part of the qualification process. „The qualification by
the French forces is at the end of next year,‟ Bruno Gilon, product
line manager for combat aircraft at Thales, told Shephard. „They
will then have six months to test and accept this standard and that
it can be operational.‟ The qualification phase will culminate in a
live-firing of the Meteor missile with the new software
configuration, said Gilon, though he would not comment on what the
software changes would add in terms of specific capabilities...

The U.S. Air Force selected Northrop Grumman Corporation‟s
APG-83 Scalable Agile Beam Radar (SABR) as the active
electronically scanned array (AESA) for its F-16 radar upgrade.
Northrop Grumman will upgrade 72 U.S. Air National Guard F-16s to
meet a U.S. Northern Command Joint Emergent Operational Need for
homeland defense. “AESA radar upgrades are critically important to
give the F-16 community, the tactical advantage it deserves, and we
are honored to provide this differentiating technology for the
safety and mission effectiveness of our warfighters,” said Bob
Gough, vice president, combat avionics systems, Northrop Grumman.
“The APG-83 SABR system is in full rate production and available

Airbus Helicopters lands $162 mn contract for French military

The France-based rotorcraft manufacturer Airbus Helicopters on
May 31 was awarded a 145 million euros (US$162 mn) contract to
support the French military helicopters fleet, the European tenders
electronic daily (Ted) announced on Thursday. Under this 145 721
057 euros order awarded by the French Defence Ministry‟s integrated
through-life support structure for aeronautical equipment and
systems (SIMMAD), Airbus Helicopters will provide “[French] State
helicopters operational maintenance and repair” services, without
giving more details regarding the duration or the platforms the
contract involves. This support service contract comes as the
French helicopters fleet eyes a single aircraft, the Airbus H160,
to replace an aging and varied fleet of Alouette, Dauphin, Fennec,
