Welcome to the 2014 edition of the Red Deer Bull Sale. I think this is a fantastic group of bulls assembled for this year’s event, and will be one of the best offerings we’ve had here in recent years! Quantity is down, but quality is up!
Included in “Red Deer” annually is the “Oh Kay Farms” bull sale. They will again have several thick hairy Red Simmentals complemented by some nice Fullblood Simmis to complete their offering. The Lougheeds have become very established in the Central Alberta bull market and have a solid following of repeat customers.
”Red Deer” has become one of the best known sources for quality Fullblood Simmental bulls to sell. A string that has grown in size and quality over the last few years is Starwest Farms. This set of bulls they offer this year will rival any Fullblood bull pen in the country for quality. The Applecross and Keato Meadows bulls have been high sellers and steady sellers in recent sales and will have bulls to be considered again. Newcomers to the Fullblood section will be Elliot Simmentals and B Bar C Simmentals with strong strings.
A feature black bull will be consigned from JT Livestock who had a high seller here last year too.

OH KAY AUSTIN 9AThis is our top ET calf. He shows the same muscle shape as Texas himself had and could go on to be a breeder bull. He has more depth of rib than any of other calves in our offering and he is as quiet as a kitten.

Penny 81P had two natural calves out of Texas and they topped our sales, going to Cave Simmentals and Westgold, so it only made sense to flush her the same way. We had used up our supply of semen but thanks to Virginia Ranch we got a few more straws. We were hoping for heifer calves but lucky for you we had mostly bull calves.

Adrian is a bull that has always been in the middle of the pack, but with one look at him you can see how soggy this guy is.

A heifer’s first calf that is one of the top performing bulls in the pen. A very high weight gain, with a very light birth weight. He is one of the longer bulls in the group and will add a lot of weight to his calves.

A maternal sister was purchased by GSB Simmentals this fall at the Red & Black Sale. A thick calf with a moderate frame, his dam goes back to the Twin Chief herd and has been a consistent producer.

A black calf out of Red Iron, which should be an easy calver, with his smooth shoulders and smaller frame. This calf’s grand dam had our high seller last year.

Ace was the heaviest weaned calf in the pen. His dam’s other two calves are working for Farrant Farms and Diamond Willow Simmentals. They were the first to be picked out of pen and Ace has the same easy doing nature to him. If you want to add some muscle definition to your calves Ace is the bull for you.

Arrow has really come on from weaning to yearling to becoming one of the better calves in the pen. This is our only Spud calf and boy has he done it again! Arrow is a moderate frame bull that packs a lot of punch.

First calf heifer did a good job with this bull. He is out of the calving easy specialist Bravado and could be a heifer bull himself.

Adam is one of our blacks going back to a cow from J Anchor Simmental. He is a bull that will put a ton of hair on and will add length to his calves.

Quite often if you have a lighter color calf you have a hard time selling him unless he is real good. If you like lots of hair, lots of growth and want a damn good bull this guy will fit the bill because he is that good.

Half fleck. Good things happen with you cross red genetics with Fleck ones and here he is! His sire comes from Anchor D breeding and was used a lot more this summer on heifers and cows.

These four Fleck bulls show the power of our new Lockhart Valley Bull. These calves are over 1400 lb before a year of age. They show extra depth of rib and have lots of length. I wouldn’t call him a heifer bull, birth weights ranged from 102 to 112 so I wouldn’t call him extreme either. It’s the quality of these calves that I think could take our fullbloods to the next level.

High % Fleck calf whose older mother didn’t have much milk so this calf had to fend for himself. If momma would have fed him better he could have been the top calf in the pen. As it is he is still one of the better ones.

Full Fleck. Don’t discount this calf on his picture. It must have been a long day because he looks way better than that in person. His dam is a good cow that we got from Langer Fleckvieh and has always brought in one of the better ones.

100% Fleckvieh. Here’s a bull that I’ve always liked! He’s got a certain amount of style that makes him stick out. And why shouldn’t he, his dam is a very correct cow with a perfect udder (who just so happens to have a very attractive heifer calf this year). Aviator is a long, smooth bull with tremendous foot and rib. If you want a bull with a soggy, dark hair coat then this one definitely deserves a serious look. Here he is. thatPower is a personal favorite around the farm and rightfully so; he is a bull that I really admire. Heartland surely puts his stamp on his offspring structurally, which is just what we hoped he would do. Strongheart has a long frame, big testicles, good meat to bone ratio and is colored well. His dam is a fifth calver and is very productive, she puts everything into raising her calf and still looks great at weaning. Strongheart’s calves should push down the scales in the fall.

High percentage Fleckvieh Fullblood. Austin is dark, dark red and solid built with lots of length. Part of our first calf crop off Oakview Titan. They looked good as calves and even better as yearlings. Titan is one of the deepest bodied bulls you will find, and he passes that on to his calves. We used him on heifers and cows and generally he kept them consistent. Our bull numbers last and this year are way down, with the heifers out numbering bulls 3-1. Therefore we have a tremendous set of Titan heifers ready for breeding this spring and another on the ground for 2014.
