The Thunderbirds Air Demonstration Squadron, established in 1953, is named after a mythological bird found in Native American legends in the southwest region of the United States. For over half a century, they have served as ambassadors for the U.S. Air Force, promoting international goodwill at air shows throughout the U.S. and in over 60 countries around the world, and have flown several different aircraft during their distinguished history. The team began their relationship with the F-16 Fighting Falcon in 1983 by exchanging their T-38A Talon jet trainers for the F-16A. In 1992, these were traded in for the current F-16C Block 32 aircraft, which feature improved radar, cockpit avionics, and an enlarged

tail fairing for ECM equipment. 2009 will see the Thunderbirds upgrade again to the U.S. Air Force's latest F-16, the Block 52, which is equipped with a more powerful Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-229 engine. Apart from the removal of radar, the replacement of the 20mm Vulcan cannon with a smoke generating system, and other minor changes, the Thunderbirds aircraft are identical to those flown by combat units, and can be returned to full combat ready condition in under 72 hours if necessary. Giving over 70 performances per year in a season that lasts from March to Novem­ber, the Thunderbirds will surely continue to dazzle audiences with their aerobatic repertoire for many years to come.

2009 werden die Thunderbirds dann emeut aufgerustet zur letzten F-16C der US-Luftwaffe, dem Block 52, der mit einem noch starkeren Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-229 Triebwerk ausgerustet ist. Abgesehen von der Entfemung des Radars, dem Austausch der 20mm Kanone gegen einen Rauchgenerator und anderen kleineren Anderungen, sind die Thunderbird-Flugzeuge identisch mit den von Kampfeinheiten geflogenen und konnen - falls erforderlich - in weniger als 72 Stunden auf voile Kampfbereitschaft zuruckgerustet werden. Indem sie jahrlich mehr als 70 Vorstellungen in einer nur von Marz bis November dauemden Saison geben, werden die Thunderbirds sicher noch viele Jahre lang damit fortfahren, ihre Zuschauer mit ihrem Kunstflug-Repertoire zu verbluffen.

•There are 12 registered Thunderbirds team members, of which 8 are elite fighter pilots. While only 6 aircraft take part in performances, the team has a total of 11 F-16s, including 2-seater F-16D aircraft. At exhibitions, the non flying members are active in other roles such as backup, doctor, narrator, and spokesperson. Each year the team changes three pilots.

Zwar nehmen nur 6 Flugzeuge an den Vorfiihrungen teil, aber das Team besitzt insgesamt 11 F-16, einschlieBlich der 2-sitzigen F-16D Flugzeuge. Bei Ausstellungen sind die nicht-fliegenden Mitglieder in anderen Rollen aktiv, wie etwa als Bodenpersonal, Mediziner, Erklarer und Sprecher. Jedes Jahr wechselt das Team 3 Piloten aus.

OL'equipe des Thunderbirds se compose de 12 membres dont 8 sont des pilotes de chasse d'elite. F-16C "Thunderbirds" Painting Guide Each Thunderbirds F-16C has its number painted on the sides of the air intake and

features a livery of blue and red stripes on a white background, with an image of the legendary bird painted on the underside of the aircraft. Pilot and crew names are on the sides of the canopy while the flags of every country visited by the team to date are behind it. Refer to the instruction manual for information on painting details. See separate guide when applying markings.

Die Namen des Piloten und der Mannschaft stehen auf der linken Seite der Kanzel,

Guide de Peinture du F-16C "Thunder­birds" Chaque F-16C des Thunderbirds porte son numero individuel peint sur les cotes de I'entree d'air et des bandes rouges et bleues sur un fond blanc. Le dessin de I'oiseau legendaire est peint sous I'avion. Les noms du pilote et du mecanicien chef sont peints sous la verriere avec les drapeaux des pays visites par le team en arriere. ©Dip the decal in tepid water for about 10 sec. and place on a clean cloth. ©Hold the backing sheet edge and slide decal onto the model. ©Move decal into position by wetting decal with finger. ©Press decal gently down with a soft cloth until excess water and air bubbles are gone.

ANBRINGUNG DES ABZIEHBILDES ©Abziehbild vom Blatt ausschneiden. ©Das Abziehbild ungefahr 10 Sek. in lauwarmes Wasser tauchen, dann auf sauberen Stoff legen. ©Die Kante der Unterlage halten und das Abziehbild auf das Modell schieben. ©Das Abziehbild an die richtige Stelle schieben und dabei mit dem Finger das

Abziehbild naBmachen. ©Das abziehbild mit weichem Stoff ganz andrucken, bis kein uberflussiges Wasser und keine Luftblasen mehr vorhanden sind.

APPLICATION DES DECALCOMANIES ©Decoupez la decalcomanie de sa feuille. ©Plongez la decalcomanie dans de I'eau tiede pendant 10 secondes environ et poser sur un linge propre. ©Retenez la feuilie de protection par le cote et glissez la decalcomanie sur le modele reduit. ©Placez la decalcomanie a I'endroit voulu en la mouillant avec un de vos doigts. ©Pressez doucement la decalcomanie avec un tissu doux jusqu'a ce que I'eau en exces et les bulles aient disparu.
